Browsing photos with Spotlight?

Hello everybody!
When I search some photos with spotlight is there any way to browse with the spotlight "slideshow" those folders spotlight find?
I mean, I have photos of cars in a folder named "cars". When I search for car photos I have the searchword "cars" and I find that folder (cars), is there now any way to see those photos inside that cars-folder with the spotlight? Or should all the files be somehow named "cars"... I hope you got my point.
Thanks in advance!

I have quite a few things that show up with the search term "flowers"--some image files (which you can see in slideshow by pressing the play button in the Spotlight window view), and a couple of folders. The easiest way to view a slideshow of the items in one of the folders is to double click the the folder in the Spotlight window, which opens that folder. Then select all the items, and control-click on one, and select "Slideshow" from the contextual menu.

Unless you have the source files that were on the TC or Windows machine you will have to start over with a new library as follows:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1.  Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.  Your original library will remain intact for further attempts at fixes is so desired.

  • How can i see photos with apple tv from my time capsule files?

I have photos in my time capsule and i want to display them on my apple tv without a computer. Some sort of browsing in my time capsule from apple tv. Both are in the same wifi net, which uses time capsule as basis,

Unfortunately, you cannot do that. In order to share photos with your Apple TV, you need to select them through the advanced menu of iTunes on your computer.

  • Unable to search for photos in Spotlight.

Some weeks ago, I inadvertently dragged my 'Pictures' folder into the desktop, and managed to replace it, but after that, (and after temporarily renaming it 'Images') I can no longer search for photos in Spotlight.
Spotlight Preferences now recognises 'Images' and I'm unable to change it back to 'Pictures'.
Any advice or solution would be greatly appreciated.

Spotlight Preferences now recognises 'Images' and I'm unable to change it back to 'Pictures'.
As I said before there is no "photo" file type, just a bunch of other kinds (tiff, jpeg, GIF, and maybe 20 other possible extensions) that are used for photos. I don't think Spotlight uses the term "Pictures", just "images". I have a "Pictures" folder but in Spotlight I just see "Images" in the search results, and "Images" is what is uses in the preferences.
this doesn't explain why I'm unable to search for photo files using Spotlight.
Make sure that the area containing your photos is not excluded from search by the privacy feature in Spotlight's preferences.
Spotlight searches for text information. For example, I have lots of photos, but spotlight only find a single one since I don't use the word "photo" in any of my file names or folder names. The one file it finds has "Created by Adobe Photoshop" in the metadata - Spotlight is keying in on the word "photo". If I type in the word "Picture" it finds the Pictures folder, but doesn't list the contents since none of those have the word "Picture" in their names or text within the file.
What exact search term are you entering into Spotlight? Are you sure that a file exists with that term in its name, or perhaps in text included within the file?

  • Organize and browse photos Chronologically

I recently moved from PSE 5 through PSE 7 (2 months using version that came with my Epson Scanner), and then to PSE9. Now I'm coming accross some of fhe idosyncronisities of the Organizer that are discussed in other threads. I'm also seeing where many posters are saying that Folder Location View is very broken and that PSE9 is not intended to be a folder view organizer. There are so many quirks in this version I wish I wasn't so invested in PSE.
Since I like to keep my photos mainly organized by Chronological order and by event or location, I would like to hear how others out there are doing it. I'm finding that the views other than Folder View are no better, and in many ways worse. For example, There are only two ways to view the files in Thumbnail view, Olderst first and Newest First..Well, the photo are all jumbled together without a delineation on date or event. Even if I had the witherall to go through my entire collection and tag them, I don't think the display would seperate them. And the tag isn't readily readable in the display like a folder path would be. Maybe I'm wrong, so if other have accomplished this, I'd love to hear about it.
Another problem in Thumbnail View is the ways that PSE decides the order. I'm gessing here but...  If a photo was from a camera, I then it picks up the Metadata in the file, but if it was scanned in, it uses the scan date or the date the file was created. I'm in the process of scanning a huge number of slides and negatives from times past so these are classified as 'Newer' when in fact I want them to be 'Older'. I think I saw ways to alter the dates, but that means more steps in the process and I still don't get the event organization.
Even if I tagged everything (which is a big effort) I'd still need a  similar organization of the tags. It would be impossible to find things  in Explorer or say another photo browser if I were to use that to  publish my photos online say in Picasa albums.
And the import batch view is totally useless. Who really cares about that? And there seems to be othe quirks there, like the way TimeLine window works.
Well, unless I get an inspiration from some place, I'll continue to limp along with Folder View where I create the folder structure which does give me control of how the files are ordered.
    FYI: My main scheme is:
    My Pictures
      <year>
          <Year-month Event>
<Sets, if this was created from sets of slides or film.>
Also sometimes I have other Folders under this because I have a camera that creates subfolders that I maintain when I use the Panarama assist mode where I can stitch together multiple images into a panarama.
Anyway, I'd like to hear how others are dealing with these issues.
    Thanks,
    DoctorBrown

    >I'm not sure I see any benefit to a tag that says Set-01 and Set-02 as I think I will forget what these mean as the years go by. I would use a descriptive tag, such as "Cruise", "Mountains", "Anchorage" etc.
Again, I am creating my primary order to be by Year-Month and order they were taken. Captions, Tags and Albums will be used to fill in the description, location and make groupings for selected shots. Or if useful, Tags can help with this primary order.
These Sets are older rolls of film or slides (I could call it Roll-001, etc, But the slides are no longer in a roll. ) that I've scanned in and have physically labeled as such (with detailed location) and organized in the order they were taken and grouped by the trip I was on. Therefore I can know exactly where to find the slide if I want to go to it. All the rolls from a given trip are located in a folder that is labled with the trip identifier, with each roll in a subfolder. When I went on these trips I'd use like 25 rolls of film. As like many photographers, I take many more shots than I will ever present in a slide show, print, etc. I probably should delete many more than I do, but I keep them. I do plan to further caption them to add this location info.
I am very aware of ability for multiple heirachial tags. I'm also aware that you can attach multiple tags to each image. I'm spending a lot of time getting these onto my system and debating how much time to spend tagging all these older shots. I'm trying to work with the capabilities of PSE so I can use them the way I want.
    > I'm not 100% sure I understand what you mean, but if I understand you properly, tags give you this capability.
In the past, you could set the option so that you see the photos in all the folders and then you could scroll through all your photos. The full path of each folder was displayed in a banner line that separated the folders. Similar to how the Batch View does now. I would click on a folder to get quickly to the starting point and then page up/down review what's near that point to select ones for further use. I found that very useful. Also, I really like keyboard operations (Page up, page down, etc) and want a way to page through multiple tags (or folders as used to be the case). The current implimentation of PSE does neither in a way that's useful.  If I could do the same with the Tag heirachy then the tags would be much more useful.
The Batch view has scroll/page capability but the order is nothing like I want to see them. Thumbnail View displays strictly by date and has no concept of the groupings that I want and I can't configure it to do so. In addition, these scanned images are getting dated as of the scan  date but I want them to be in the order by the year-month and order they  were taken. If I have a specific tag on images in multiple folders, I can only see all the photo with that tag in Thumbnail or Batch View.
I also have a whole host of reasons why the TimeLine window doesn't work for me. (but that's for another thread.)
I do realize that not everyone wants to see their photos these ways. But the product should have sufficient flexibility to accomodate a wide range of preferences. I've spent a great deal of time in earlier PSE versions getting things the way I want and changing to a new organizer would entail huge amount of time. So I'm really not relishing the thought of changing organizers. And I still think the editor is one of the best, if not the best, around.

Forget what? Just want to browse photos? Use the Finder with Quicklook. Use Preview use any of the 100 or image viewers that you’ll find on MacUpdate.
is it IMpossible in iPhoto and iTunes???
Well, it’s impossible in iTunes because that’s for music. (The hint is in the “Tunes” part of the name.

Nothing crazy about it. IPhoto is not a Image Viewer. How crazy of you think it is! It’s Photo Organiser.

  • Browsing directory with RAW files

Is there any way to browse directory with RAW files? I can use dcraw, ufraw or rawstudio to work on single file, but how to find the file I want in directory with more than 100 RAWs?

I use rawtherapee for most of my photo editing needs.  (Not that I have an especially high skill level.)  It provides, among other things, a browser interface for moving through your files.  It looks like AUR still has version 2.3 -- I suggest the beta instead, which is available for x86_64 or x86 right from www.rawtherapee.com -- IME it's been very stable, and it contains many, many bugfixes and interface/workflow improvements over the current "release" version.
I haven't broadly sampled a bunch of different apps, but I've been very happy with it.
No installation is required, just extract to the directory of your choice and execute "rt" to run it.
To get it working on Arch, I did have to do this step first, as noted in the comments in AUR:
As root run "gtk-update-icon-cache -f /usr/share/icons/THEME" for the Icon-THEME you are using and rawtherapee starts nicely.
If you try running it without first doing that, and it fails to start up, check to see whether you need to kill the "rt" process before trying again.
I've been using it since 2.3 was first released (IIRC) and have used it under Ubuntu and openSUSE successfully, in addition to Arch, both x86 and x86_64.

  • I can't access edited photos with iphoto

I am new to iphoto 08.
I have preferences set up to edit iphoto images with photoshop CS3. After editing a photo, I use the option save in same folder but iPhoto does not show the edited photo, just the unedited photos. I can see the location of the new photo using spotlight (the path indicates that the photo is in the same folder as the unedited photos in iPhoto) but am unable to see the photo in iPhoto.
    Any ideas? Thanks, David

    David:
    Maybe this will help:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • "Alias not found" when opening a non-alias folder with Spotlight

    Good morning everyone,
I'm noticing a strange behaviour when browsing through the finder. When I go to a folder (for example, /Users/AeroCross/Dropbox) I have various subfolders. I press CmdShiftF (find by filename) to search for a folder (for example Dropbox/Work/Informs). When the folder "Today" appears in the serach results, I double-click it to enter, then this message appears: http://cl.ly/4wXm - notice that the folder "Informs" is NOT an alias (and there are no aliases around, neither, I don't use them).
It happens with any subfolder folder I search with Spotlight. Can anyone reproduce this problem? Anyone has a solition or something?
P.S: Fix alias does nothing. It just closes the dialog window and that's it. Either way, the error won't reproduce until a later time.

Yeah, there were some problems with this earlier, pre-Snow, but now it is a constant problem, and a very strange one. As I recall, the earlier problem happened with all sorts of things, not just folders. AFAIK the easiest work-around is to select the folder, then at the bottom of the search window you'll see the path to the selected item. Double click the folder there and it should open just fine. Also, very weirdly indeed, if you double click the folder it actually DOES open, but the error box appears on top of it, and when you dismiss it the Finder window returns to its previous state, however if you go to the Finder Go menu item, and select "Recent Folders" the folder you just opened but couldn't access is listed! You can access it just fine from there.
It happens with any subfolder folder I search with Spotlight.
I have not been able to determine what "rule" determines which folders won't open. Some folders returned in a search window will open just fine, others in the same search results window don't. Also, once you have opened the folder thru other means (using the path at the bottom of the window, or the Recent Folders menu), it will then open directly from the search window with a double click.

  • IMovie Crashing when importing photo with Ken Burns Effect

iMovie is crashing all the time when I am trying to import a photo with Ken burns effect using media browser and hitting "apply". Is this a known problem ? If I dont apply Ken Buruns effect then it imports it fine.
I am trying to put Photo at the begining of my project ( and then put title on that photo). If I have any clip in the begining and then try importing photo with ken burn's effect then it is not crashing, but it still does not import it. I click "apply" and it does soemthing , I can see the clip in timeline for a sec and then it disappears. So either way, cant use any photos anywhere with Ken Burn's effect. Whats going on?
I have more than enough space available on my HDD and I do not think there is any conflicting QT plugins I have ( It's all default Install). This is so consistent that it seems like a Bug but can't find this exact case mentioned anywhere in discussions.
    Powerbook G4 12.1" 1.5Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Welcome to the forum! And thanks for such an insightful post.
    I have two guesses here:
o The Ken Burns code of iMovie has a problem with partitions
o The Ken Burns code of iMovie has a problem with access rights
I've never seen a Ken Burns problem with partitions (I've used multiple partitions for years with no problems). I suspect that's not the cause.
But I think you've hit the nail on the head that iMovie may have a problem with permissions/access rights. I don't know exactly what the problem is — or whether it's caused by iMovie or OSX — but there is behavior that suggests something isn't right.
I suspect the issue, whatever it is, causes a failure to save the rendered Ken Burns clip inside the project package. The red bar runs, but the rendered clip isn't saved to disk. My guess is OSX refuses to allow iMovie to save the file for OSX doesn't believe YOU have permission.
One would think that using the Finder to set the permissions of the project package would solve the problem, but it doesn't seem to.
    There are two possible solutions:
    1. Set the partition to ignore permissions. In the Finder, click on the partition and Get Info. Turn ON the checkbox "Ignore permissions on this volume";
    2. Use Disk Utility to reformat (erase) the partition. Somehow that seems to fix the problem.
Here's some history which may suggest another solution: In an earlier version of iMovie a similar problem occurred, where iMovie would refuse to open a project. It had somehow decided you didn't have permission to edit the project.
The only solution was to use the Finder to create a new set of project folders — a folder and all the folders it normally contains — then Option-drag the FILES of the original project folder to the appropriate folders. (Option-dragging COPIED the files instead of moving them.) The new project folder would now open normally.
If you are adept at working with packages, you might try creating your own package (which contains all the normal folders) then Option-drag the files of the problem project to your package.
Once I saw an error -52 announcement, but it was not reproducible.
Error -52 is a "Get file position error", which (may) suggest a disk directory error. That may be a disk issue unrelated to iMovie. You might want to consider using Disk Utility to Verify/Repair that partition.
I have a separate partition for the movies and made a
link from my home account to the directory with the
movies on that partition. iMovie works correctly
except for the Ken Burns photo rendering.
I'm never sure whether creating such a link is a good idea or not, especially for the iLife apps. Some apps don't resolve the alias as they should, which creates other problems. A "Movies" alias sends iDVD a million miles beyond Jupiter, for example, where the iDVD project joins the space dust.
For iMovie projects saved on partitions and external drives, I just save them inside a "iMovie 6 Projects" folder on that drive. (Every new version of iMovie gets a new folder.) For convenience, I may create aliases to help navigate there, but do nothing else. Everything just works.
If you figure out something new, please say.

  • Cannot see photos with iphoto

I tried to backup my photos with a new drive.  I had them all on an external lacie drive that was full.  I moved the photos and now iphoto cannot see them.  I made a copy on my hard drive but iphoto still cannot seem them.  I opened the package and all the photos are there, thank god.  However, I cannot get them into iphoto for browsing.  Any ideas?  I am running iphoto 08 and 10.6.8.
    Bill

If you don't have a Preferences option under the iPhoto menu then you have a damaged iPhoto preferecne file or a damaged applicaiton.  First make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a viable backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
If that doesn't help you'll need to reinstall iPhoto. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
Then install iPhoto from the disk it came on originally.

  • I just order 8 calendars from iPhoto and they came to me fine. Now I need to order two more but when I go thru the process I get a message  saying:unable to assemble calendar. There is a probleme with the photo with the file name"(Null)"   more........ .

Would someone be able to explain to me the following issue with Iphoto?
I ordered 8 same calendars for my soccer team and received them fine. Although a couple of pictures on it are a little off (out of focus). I need to order two more of the same calendars but when I go thru the process ireceive an error message saying:
"Unable to to assemble  calendar" There is a problem with the photo with the file name "(Null)" The full resolution version of this photo either cannot be located or is corrupt. Please replace this photo or delete it from your calendar.
How can  I fine this "corrupt" photo? How did it go thru with the first batch of calendars but won't go thru now?
    Thank you for your help.

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start
with Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • IPhoto imports photos with wrong dates even if the dates are fine on the camera

    Hi!
When I import photos with iPhoto, sometimes it imports them with wrong dates, even the dates are fine on the camera. It puts dates such as 2032. Does anyone know how can I fix that. As far as I know there is no way to change dates of the photos.
    Thanks!

well that is very confusing since if the date is correct on the camera it will be correct in iPhoto
    and as to
As far as I know there is no way to change dates of the photos.
Try looking through your iPhto menus - two commands - adjust time and date and batch change time and date - asjust is used to correct incorrect dates like a comera setting -   Batch change for missing dates like with scans
