Brush Cursor - Art Pen Rotation

Hi !
Today I downloaded the trial of PS CS5.
I think its a really great step for digital painting and I love
the new bristle and mixer brushes-
But one thing really disappointed me. I´m using a Wacom Art Pen to control
the angle of the brushes by the rotation of the pen.
When I first tried a Bristle Brush, I was really happy that i was able to rotate
the brush cursor with my pen.. but when i started painting, the brush stopped rotating
and stayed in the initial direction.
Even worse: The normal brushes are still as static as in the previous Photoshop versions.
By not showing the rotation of the brush, it is really hard to set an precise brush stroke
with the right angle.
Am i missing something, it is a bug or is Adobe still planing not to change this disadvantage ?
Best regards,
Florian

I think the question about the CPU was directed at another poster, but mine is a new Dell with a fast processor and fast card. It works great with the bristle brushes.
I'll give you an example of what I need to do. If I were to make a new brush out of the words "AIR MAIL" and want to rubber stamp those words around on my image at specific places and at specific angles, I need the ghost outline of the AIR MAIL brush to rotate on the fly as I rotate the barrel of the pen. When I click once on the screen, I want the lettering to rubber stamp the image in the color of choice and relative to the amout of pressure I apply, but I want to be in control of the angle the rubber stamp is applied.
So, I can't use the brushes "randomizer" feature because I want to know and control exactly where and how the imprint will be applied.
The AIR MAIL stamp is only a visual example of what I am needing to do. In reality, I have some spatter brushes that are essentially different on all sides. I am using that kind of brush to paint in a layer mask around the edges on an image layer to reveal the white background layer underneath. I need to be able to see exactly what part of the brush is being painted in with black and rotate it regularly to keep from getting too many repetitive strokes. I don't need these brushes to tilt, only rotate as I rotate the pen in my fingers, but I definitely need the ghost preview of the brush on the screen before I apply it.
Currently, I am only seeing the rotation behavior I need when using one of the eight or nine special bristle brushes.
I am using Windows 7 Ultimate with Adobe Photoshop CS5
Memory - 12GB Tri-Channel DDR3  SDRAM at 1066MHz - 6 DIMMs
Processor - Studio XPS 9000, Intel Core i7-920  processor (8MB L3 Cache 2.66GHz)
Video: NVIDIA GeForce GTX260
Tablet: Intuos4 Medium with Art Pen
Thanks again,

  • CS2 - 6D art pen brushes rotate the wrong way

I'm wondering if this is the normal behaviour of the 6d art pen brushes that come with Illustrator CS2. When I use them with my 6d art pen, they rotate in the opposite direction as I rotate my pen. Does anyone know a way around this? The pen works fine in Painter and Photoshop.
My setup is Macbook Santa Rosa 2.2 Ghz, 4 gb ram, windows xp home sp2 (up to date), Cintiq 12 WX with the 6D art pen (art marker).

Dear CS3 and CS4 photoshop users,
I hope I can straighten out the whole confusion with the 6D art pen ROTATION feature not working. (not a solution but clarify)
Although we appreciate all forms of opinions, I have a message for people saying that rotation feature will work when you set the brush settings correctly. WE_ARE_NOT_NEW at this. Many of us have been using the rotation feature with CS3 perfectly fine, and yes, we know how to set it up. Thank you for your tips but IT IS NOT working as it should. I don't know whether it is defendant with: x64 or x32 syst on our part, driver problem with wacom, or in fact with the CS4. I will tell you what I did and what I got however.
X64 Vista Ult. 6G RAM, Quad core, both Intuos 3 and Cintiq 20wsx.(Cintiq is my primary and the only one I use now a days and I don't have both plugged at the same time. However, I have tried with Intuos3 separately, and it won't work) I uninstalled old wacom driver and updated to the latest (5days old), remade brush settings fresh with rotation setting (not just using my own saved preset from CS3) and it still WON"T WORK... so there it is. Hope this clarifies the issue so that the TECH can help us (please) and not think that we are all confused.

  • Brush Cursor Rotation - Preview available?

    The problem is well known:
If you are using a tablet that can detect rotation of the pen you can rotate the angle of your brush along with it. This is very useful in inking and painting. In CS5 you get a preview of the way the brush is rotated - but only with the bristle tip brushes. Normal brushes are completely static in preview. When starting the stroke the preview freezes completely however.
Is there any way to fix this? What reason is there it is not already happening?
This is annoying me no end, as I bought the a wacom art pan to that particular end and now I cannot properly use it. Please fix this, if possible.

"This is expected behavior. Unfortunately it would be too big of a performance hit to update the cursor during painting."
So I can only assume by that statement that this feature has actually been created but not implemented into CS6 do to performance issues? I honestly believe that the minds of Adobe can write this feature without having performance issues if Corel Painter can do it. Also looking at the new features and gpu enhancements, why would performance be an issue? This is a beta, at least have the option be available to use or not use for users .
" Is there an option that allows your Brush Cursor to stay active while you paint? If not, will this option be available?"
The first question was answered but not the second question.

  • Brush Cursor rotation while painting?

I am using a Wacom Cintiq with Wacom's Art Pen (Art Pen allows PS bushes to read full rotation). When I hover over and rotate my pen I can see the Brush Cursor rotate and move but when I place a stroke down the cursor does not move or rotate with the stroke. Is there an option that allows your Brush Cursor to stay active while you paint? If not, will this option be available?

  • Pen tool, Rounded ractangle and Brush cursor.

    Hi, Good Day.
There are things that I want to say about using CS4.
    1.   Pen tool.
In Photoshop 5.0, I found that it is faster to <stroke path> compared to the newer version of PS. In PS 5.0, I never need to exit pen tool mode whenever I wanted to select the brush sizes. The Brush size Selection 'tray' tab is always available even when I’ve exit the brush mode. Thus make the stroke works become faster, simpler and easier.
And this is not happen in CS4. What I see is when every time I want to stroke the paths, to choose the brush size I must exit the pen tool mode ; and when I’m back the pen tool mode again, the brush option tray will gone. This slows me every time when I want to choose brush or when I want to re-correct or to re-stroke in order for looking the right brush size and style; it's really complicates me.
So, can Adobe do something about the Brush Selection tab so it always availed like other tabs, like PS5.0 do? Which like swatches tab, color tab, etc.. So it wouldn’t go off next time when we exit the brush mode; thus saves time.
    2.   Rounded rectangle.
Problem: I want to modify my rounded rectangle shape by adjusting the all the four rounded edges evenly without ruining the square shape. The problem is the shape is too free, the points are working individually and paths are “flabby”.
Can someone tell me know how to lock the shape?
It’s like what in Microsoft Word do. The rounded rectangle lines can be locked so I can adjust the edges to be rounder and rounder, whether partly or simultaneously.
    3.     Brush cursor.
I found that the brush cursor seem to be ‘unstable’; which is that the PS will change the Normal brush cursor to the Precise brush cursor when I’m using the Text tool, and I can’t change the cursor back to Normal cursor again after exiting the text tool and I'm also not on the text layer. And sometimes this problem happens even when I’m not using the Text tool; for example when I’m doing some copy and paste job.
The only solution is to close PS and restart my computer. What I should do?
    Thanks for your concern.

    Hi Bion_s,
In the course of playing around in Illustrator to find a solution, I found that if you open your appearance panel (Window > Appearance), select the fly-out menu and deselect New Art has Basic Appearance.
I found that with this option unselected, you can select your stroke width and profile and draw multiple times without it reverting to the default stroke!
Please let me know if this works for you. I'm not sure how this might affect your workflow on other projects, but it did result in the behavior you seemed to want.
    Cheers,
    Michael

  • Disappearing brush cursor

    Hi All,
I've just installed Aperture 3 bought in the App Store on my MacBook Pro and I've got rather annoying problem with it. When I want to use a brush to edit a picture the brush cursor (the two circles) disappears after a split of a second leaving me with the arrow cursor only. It's not there when I want to adjust the brush size or its softness either.
I tried installing it again but nothing changed.
If anyone could possibly help me to solve this problem I would really appreciate it.

    What happens if you:
    • Repair Permissions (Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility/First Aid)
    • Bring the OS and Aperture to their current versions
    • Repair Permissions again
    • Set the Mac to 32-bit operation
    • Restart the Mac and run only Aperture

  • Brush Cursor don't work correctly in Adobe Photoshop CS 5

I'am using Adobe Photoshop CS 5.1 on my brand new MacMini Server (Mid 2011). Everytime I change the diameter of my brush below 500-600px the brush cursor disapperar. It show the reagular Cursor. The Position of the Brush is also wrong because it has a vertical and horizontal offset, which makes it unpossible for me to use it. This worked correctly of years now with Photoshop CS3 and CS 4 in Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard also with Photoshop CS 5. For me it seems to be a Problem of the Intel HD 3000 Graphicsdriver and Adobe says that too. No Way to fix it for Adobe. Other People have the same Problem on their MacBook Airs (Mid 2011). The Problem is also well know at the Adobe Photoshop Support Forum.
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/brushes_not_working_on_201 1_macbook_air
Same Problem with Brushes in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.4.
Hope the Apple will fix that soon, because I'am a Photographer and bought the new mac to improve Speed in Photoshop.

FOUND A WORKAROUND:   . .  at least it works in my configuration (for two days in a row now).
If I have my external screen (Eizo CG223W) turned on, in standby mode, when i boot-up my mac, and the mini wakes up the screen from it's standby mode: the Photoshop brush issue is there.
If i have the external screen powered off during boot up, and power the screen on manually afterwards, the brush issue is not there
I have no explanation for this but it is a workaround (though not for Macbook Pro users).
There's one issue though: my mouse preferences are changed with this boot-up procedure, the speed is lowered to half speed and i have to change that manually in System preferences every time.
Does this work for others who have this issue too?

  • Double brush cursor

I am seeing a double brush cursor in CS5; why? and how do I get rid of it?
It's not the clone tool, it's the brush.
When I resize my brush to a certain size (different sizes for different images) a duplicate brush suddenly appears in the top left corner of my screen and resizes with the brush as I resize it up and down.
Also, if I zoom into my image, suddenly the duplicate brush will appear in the top left of my screen with the same behaviour.
Different images behave differently but it appears to be once I get to a certain size on any image this duplicate brush cursor appears top left of screen and makes it very difficult for me to access menu and tool options.

  • Aperture 3.6: Disappearing Brush Cursor

I experience the following issue with brushes in Aperture:
In full-screen mode the brush only gets bigger to a certain amount, than does not visibly get bigger any more. If I try to paint with it, I can only see the standard mouse-pointer. The brush though, paints in the selected size. This is of course out of control, cause I can't really see what I am doing there. The brush works fine to a rather small brush size.
    My config:
    iMac 5K, AMD Radeon R9 M295X, OS X Yosemite 10.10, Aperture 3.6
    Any help is appreciated.
    Rainer

    Hi,
the problem is solved - or maybe it disappeared just so. I made two changes to my machine:
First I got rid of x-rite profiling software and the running services wich came w/ the calibration software. I just did this, because the services caused lots of dumps and console messages.
Then I changed the preview size in Aperture preferences to "don't limit"; I had them limited to "half-size". I just guessed that using my library from a machine with a much bigger resolution (imac 5K) could have anything to do w/ my problem.
I did NOT generate new previews or had my originals newly developed. At least I did not tell Aperture to do so.
I do not know if all of the above has anything todo with the brush-cursor in Aperture, but it simply works now. Brushes size from zero to 200 and back flawlessly.
    Cheers,
    Rainer

  • Photoshop CS4 brush cursor bug on Thinkpad T61p

I've got a Thinkpad T61p with a Nvidia Quadro FX 570M onboard (driver version: 6.14.11.7471). There seems to be a bug with the graphics driver in conjunction with the new Adobe Photoshop CS4. Photoshop now uses GPU-optimization with more brush capabilities. Unfortunately the cursor clips when using brush-sizes larger than 64px. One can see the bug on the nvidia cs4 promotion "brush resizing" at http://www.nvidia.com/object/adobe_photoshop.html. Nvidia corrects this bug in newer driver versions, but lenovo only offers a WinXP-display-driver from 2008-04-28.
Does anyone know any workround? I've tested somo older forceware drivers (178.24) with partial success. The display bug in Photoshop is fixed, but e.g. After Effects CS4 crashes while detecting the GPU.
Message Edited by mikey on 10-23-2008 03:20 AM

Today I've installed the latest Forceware Drivers 180.60 from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ to test the bug behaviour.
The brush cursor now seems to be able to handle big brush sizes but the performance is reduced noticable. When painting inside a new document the rendering of the brush path is done after painting over the area, even when using small brush sizes.
So let's wait until Nvidia/Lenovo roll out a new driver.

  • My brush cursor disappear when i zoom in

    Hi,
My Photoshop has been upgraded to CS5.5 now.
When I used my circle brush tool before, I can see the size of my brush in a circle so
I know where to paint. Now this circle is disappearing when I use my brush tool when zooming in the picture.
I did change the Cursors in Perferences, I set it to Normal Brush Tip and Full Size Brush Tip.
Same thing again. I could only see the whole circle brush when looking at my image at 100%.
When I zoom in more than 100%, circle brush is gone and is replaced with a quarter circle.
    See the image before.
Do anyone know what I'm missing and what setup I need to make in order to bring back
    the normal brush cursor?
    Thanks.

Most likely, like other people posting this exact same problem in this forum, you have an older NVidia video card driver that you haven't updated in the past year or two.
Go update the driver from NVidia's web site.

Additional Info - after working on this problem for 4 hours, I shut my laptop in frustration and took a break.  1 hour later I opened my mac and the cursor had magically returned.  No restart, no power on/off - nothing.  Frustration.  If anyone else has had this happen and has actually fixed the problem let me know. I'm sure it will reoccur.

  • CS4 + CS5 Brush CURSOR outline disappear when increase the brush size

    Hi
In Photoshop CS4 and CS5, the outline of the brush cursor starts to disappear when you increase the brush size.
It's OK under 65px in diameter and it's start to disappear over 66px. In 438px the outline is a single dot and over 439px the cursor outline is completely gone!
I read that it's caused by the old drivers for the video card. I'm using GeForce 8800GT and I updated the driver with the latest version form the nVidia web site. The problem is still here!
    HELP?

I'm seeing a bit of a pattern of multiple people reporting problems with nVidia 8800 cards.  I'm thinking nVidia isn't testing new drivers against this particular model very intensively.  See my comments on video cards and drivers in this thread:

  • Brush Cursor Problem

Hello, I've been experiencing a weird brush cursor issue and I haven't been able to find anything online to fix it.
This cursor problem is different from the "chunk of cursor missing upon resizing" issue that so many people have had.
In Photoshop, when I resize my brush using the "[" and "]" keys, I will  often see my cursor get distorted. It will very briefly appear to the  right of where the cursor should be and it will look kind of oblong.  Another distortion that occurs is the cursor very briefly becomes a half  circle that is a bit larger than the cursor should be. This usually  happens between 150px and 250px size and occurs with all brushes.
I'm also experiencing a distortion when I move the brush cursor over to  the panels section. This distortion appears (again, very briefly) as a  broken up horizontal line just above the brush cursor. Also, within this  line, I can see the regular pointer arrow cursor. Sometimes I see two  arrow cursors within the line and other times just one. This happens  with all brushes of size 500px or less.
I have updated my video card drivers to the latest version and I have updated my Photoshop with the latest patch.
I use Photoshop CS5 64-bit, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, and a Toshiba  Satellite L655-S5157 with an Intel(r) HD Graphics video card.
I heard about someone with a problem somewhat similar to mine and he  said he fixed it by manually deleting his preference files. He had tried  doing the shift+alt+ctrl on startup to delete his preference files, but  it didn't fix the bug (I tried it too and it didn't work for me  either).
I would like to try manually deleting my preference files, but I just don't know where they are.
    Thanks for any help.

For you (or anyone reading this thread), try to get a machine with an embedded ATI or nVidia display interface.
Intel seems to be coming out pretty strong in the laptop market because they offer embedded GPUs in their chipsets, but Intel has a LONG way to go to get their OpenGL implementations up to par.  What I don't understand is that they've been known for having relatively poor OpenGL implementations for years now.  It's not like they're a small company who can't afford to fund a good development staff.
To this day I'm still fighting Intel-specific problems seen by people running my own OpenGL software, where ATI and nVidia implementations are rock solid.  Stuff that's documented - such as handing off an OpenGL context between threads - just fails utterly with an Intel driver/GPU.

  • After considerable, my copy of PSCS6 seems to "stop". brush cursor moves but no paint

    I use iMac i7 with lion 10.7.5
After a "considerable" amount of editing, photoshop just stops responding. For example, the paint brush cursor will move but no paint can be applied. Have about 10-12 layers, guessing abour 70 history steps.
Must exit the app and restart, at which time it will behave normally. I use latest, almost, OS and have 8GB ram..
    any ideas?
    thanks,
    vince

Is it just the brush tool that is acting up? And when you say 'must exit the app', are you able to normally close the app or do you have to Force Quit it? In other words, is the Photoshop failing to respond after sometime/ crashing?
And while you have 8GB of RAM on your iMac, we need to know how much RAM is allocated to Photoshop itself. Go to (Title Bar) Photoshop > Preferences > Performance and take a screenshot of that dialog box and post it here. It will look like this:
With this, we can see how much RAM you're letting Photoshop use.
