Brush (cursor) lag making Photoshop unrealistic option for use?

Hello forum,
I am making the move from traditional media to using the computer for generating art.  I purchased CS4 because my first machine didn't have 64 bit support.  One of the behaviors in the Photoshop application that had me suspend any further study with it was the nasty brush lag as I moved either my mouse OR my pen (I have a Wacom Cintiq) while 'painting'.
I've search diligently online for answers, read the forum posts, even called support.  The best they could offer was deleting the application cache data on my Windows XP machine.  I suppose that helped a bit, but it still proved quite laggy.
Understanding a bit about how computers work, I know processor power, GPU power and memory, and system memory can have big effects on improvement.  So I purchased the Toshiba Qosmio with an i7 quad core processor, 4 GB of fast system RAM, and a great nVidia graphic card with 1GB of memory.  This new machine is Windows 7, so I was delighted I could use the CS4 64 Bit version of Photoshop!
Surely this machine would tear it up, right?  Nope, same issue.  For example, if I take my pen (or mouse) and test the painting of a stroke diagonally across the screen, I will see anything from a fraction of a second delay to nearly 2 seconds of delay, after which the brush stroke 'appears' along the expected path, depending on how fast I drag my brush and how long the path is.
So now when I paint my brush strokes have to be short, slow strokes because the behavior of the application is requiring it if I want to see my strokes right away.
Now I'm not an digital artist, not yet, so I don't have an expectation on whether this is expected behavior or not.  I can't imagine it is, could it?  When I used GIMP for a few months, I don't remember ever seeing this kind of lag on the mouse cursor.
I want to stay in the world of Photoshop for my digital art study; nearly all of my study materials make use of it for tutorials and examples.  But I have to find out what's going on with this first.  Right?

The performance you're seeing is not normal, and certainly not acceptable.
The thing that seems to be constant across your different systems is the Wacom tablet.  I have no tablet myself, as my uses of Photoshop are serviced fine by the mouse, and everything is instantaneous.
I have been reading posts in this forum on and off about the 64 bit drivers for the Wacom not being solid...  Maybe someone else more knowledgeable in tablet operations can volunteer more info on the status of that.
Also, I have read that having the "Adobe AIR" panel open can cause lag and slowness.
Just some things to think about.
Best of luck.

Is your phone the LG Cosmos, as it says by your profile?   This phone won't work as a phone in the UK (which is GSM, and the Cosmos is CDMA-only).  Don't think is has Wifi either, so Skype is out.
So choices are to get a "loaner" phone from Verizon's Occasional Global traveller program, http://b2b.vzw.com/international/Global_Travel/index.html
or buy a cheap GSM phone in the UK.   There are some great deals, e.g. from CarphoneWarehouse, which are everywhere...

This phone costs 3GBP, around $5, you need a 10 pound top up.  And there are many others.  Just make sure it is unlocked, and then  it's easy to find SIMs which cost around 10c per min to the US.

  • How do I set Tbird 31.5 to show options for using italics, boldface, etc. in composing and replying to email? Have been using Tbird for years and can't get it.

I really have been using Tbird for years and I can't get the options for italics etc to show when composing or replying. I'm an editor looking for job so this is relevant. Please save me from Outlook. Thanks.

I believe you can specify italics by putting a slash before and after the text, bold is done using asterisks before and after text, and underline is done using the underline character before and after text.

  • Laptop options for use with PrE 11 (£500 ish)

    Hello,
I'm currently looking to buy a laptop that will allow me to edit various video projects on the move using Premiere Elements 11 (may upgrade at some point). This will serve as my main editing device until I upgrade my desktop, then serve as a portable editing station as I will be at uni next year as well as traveling a lot this year. I do a mix of animation and live action short film work using 1080p footage from my Canon 600D. I am currently looking at the £500 mark, I know it's tough to get a good editing laptop at that price, but I'd rather not spend much more. Currently I have found 3 options, and was wondering if anyone had any advice. The aspects of each laptop I am concerned about are highlighted in red

  • Options for using iPhone 3G and Hotmail Outlook Connector to sync contacts?

I reviewed some posts on this topic and searched other forums, but still have yet to see a real solution to this problem.
I am using Win XP and Outlook 2003 with the Hotmail Outlook Connector to manage my Hotmail account. My default calendar and contacts DB in Outlook is located in the same mailstore as the Hotmail data. This is not POP or IMAP as unfortunately Hotmail requires it's own protocol (Outlook Connector) to manage the email account.
Also Hotmail will NOT allow any creation of a .pst or data file to store data that may be synced with a 3rd party device.
Can someone please assist me with finding a solution so that I can continue to use my Hotmail account, with Outlook 2003 and simply synch my default calenday and contacts data with my iPhone.
Note: I had a client with a similar issue using an HTTP/RPC Exchange mailbox and also an IMAP GMail connection in the same Outlook client. We simply made the Exchange account default and stored all contacts/calendar data there. The iphone synchs this data perfectly and the client and iPhone utilize both mailboxes perfectly.
Outlook Express is not an options for me. Thanks for helping.

    Nothing? Anyone?

  • Options for using canonical interfaces in XI 2.0?

I'm working on an enterprise EAI architecture for XI 2.0, and would like to define a business interface standard using RosettaNet.  An example of how this works:
Oracle Financials (yuk!) sends a message to XI using
      a proprietary XML format.
XI does a mapping to convert it to a RosettaNet format.
XI does a mapping to convert RosettaNet to an IDOC.
XI sends the IDOC to an SAP instance.
I can see that this is possible by sticking the SOAP adapter between the 2 mappings -- essentially, the RosettaNet interface is exposed by XI as a Web service.  XI performs the 1st mapping, then calls that Web service.
However, there are a couple of drawbacks:
    1. Performance -- the adapter engine is processing the RosettaNet XML twice (the message type stays the same).
    2. Tracing -- you lose the history from the SAP headers when you go through the SOAP adapter.
Are there other options in XI 2.0 for this kind of approach?  For example, can the integration engine route it directly back to the integration engine's URL, or will there be problems from the fact that the outbound and inbound interface types are different (even though message types are the same)?
    --Dan King
    Capgemini

The mention of Oracle Financials was just an example -- we have a number of systems that we're planning to connect using this type of integration architecture (and Oracle isn't actually one of them).  To answer your question, though, it would depend on the version of Oracle Financials -- 11i vs. 10.x, because 11i introduced new interfce mechanisms.  I haven't investigated the JDBC adapter to know if it could fill that need, although I've used JDBC adapters from other middleware platforms to integrate to Oracle Apps 10.7 in the past.  The WebMethods XI adapter for Oracle Apps might also be appropriate, again, depending on which interface mechanisms it supports (10.x vs 11i).
We are looking at RosettaNet (with enhancement) as a canonical form because it's a reasonable fit for our needs.  At the moment, it doesn't make business sense to maintain our own integration data architecture.  SAP's standards (BAPI/IDOC), while much better than other vendor-specific standards, are still too tied to R/3's internal data models to serve as a canonical interface between other systems.

  • Best option for using iPhoto on holiday

I Practise a lot of photography and have a OCD about all my pictures being organised in iPhoto, with keywords, geotags, face recognition etc. I currently do this on my iMac to which my  iPhoto library is stored on a Seagate external 2tb hard drive via FireWire. The problem I find it's a lot of work when I get back and I'm stuck in the office for days organising, the solution I'm looking for is some how doing this on the go.
THe first thing I thought is to get a Macbook pro or a MacBook Air, and just take my hard drive with with me, but I'm not sure if it will need to do a library rebuild every time I unplug from iMac to another device or is it just plug and  play, or could there be an option to do some thing with a mini mac or mini mac server as these appear a cheaper option to buy. Must places I go have a HD TV so could connect the mini mac to a TV or I imagine there's and option these days of using your mini mac on a iPad screen.
Thanks in Advance, any advice appreciated

    >> I'm not sure what the term "remote image" means exactly... I find the perfect image ... paste that photo into my post, would that be using a "remote image?"
    Yes
3GB will go some way, so I'd upload your own, which avoids missing images when some other site changes. Layout/appearance should be the same for remote or uploaded.

  • On A Budget - Options for Using a File Server.

Hi - I have this relatively old 2008R2 file server (8GB memory and 25TB disk) I'd like to use as file storage for a SQL Server VM.  The network is a 1GB switched configuration.  The VM resides on relatively new hardware (Server 2012, SAS) but doesn't
have a lot of disk.  I'd like to make a bunch of the file server space available for SQL Server Data (2008R2) - its a small network (10 users) that we want to load a bunch of glob data indexed by a few keywords as reference.  Kind of like a
GIS database.  My first thought is to create fixed vhdx file on the file server via Hyper-V manager, but this takes days to initialize for the size I'm thinking of (10TB).  I created an expanding disk and it was pretty quick to create.  I copied
a 4GB file over the net to the mounted (from the Hyper-V Host) vhdx file and it went pretty fast.  I thought about using the iSCSI trick to attach it to the SQL VM (turning the file server into a SAN sort of?), but I'm wondering if this is overkill.
I'm just looking for a few suggestions.  There is a lot of stuff out there, some of it conflicting, about storage configuration.
    Thanks

    Yes, upgrading....
I need to emphasize the budget thing.  I will look into the iSCSI option.  The VM is Server 2012.
We might be able to convert the 2008 server to Windows 8.  It doesn't really do anything besides file shares and security is not a concern as we are not connected.  Is that an option?  Win8 supports SMB 3 I understand.
Yes you can do that. But... Older desktop versions of Windows were limited on amount of TCP connections they could handle obviously affecting usability and performance as a server. Not sure what's accurate for Windows 8 as MSFT has been changing this policy
back and forth all the time )) Check within MSFT licensing specialists before you do that.
P.S. I'd spawn FreeBSD or openSUSE with a Samba instead of a desktop version of Windows OS being used as a file server. IMHO.

    data: wa type ...
    Example:
data: itab type (standard, sorted, hashed) table of mara.

  • Question about creating a watermark in Photoshop Windows, but for use in iMovie 11 16:9 aspect ratio

I am looking to get this logo (the whole thing, not cut off  on the top and bottom as is all I can currently manage to get working) to use as a semi-transparent watermark for a video I made to highlight the company the logo represents. Anyone have any ideas or might be able to edit it and send it back? No matter what I do the top and bottom are always cut off in iMovie 11. A link to the logo I need to use is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:AGC_Logo.png
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to email me at [email protected] with any suggestions.
From all the research I did last night I found that iMovie 11 requires the watermarks themselves to be in either 4:3 or 16:9 aspect. I tried using GIMP on my wifes macbook to crop to these aspects but some part of the logo is always cut off, ie: the top and bottom or the left and right sides.
    Thank you again in advance!

Thank you. I'll try it as soon as I get home from work. Unfortunately we
have a filter that blocks direct image links. However I forwarded this to
    my personal email.
I tried stretching the canvas last night but no matter the size of the
canvas, GIMP still would only allow me to crop based off the size of the
logo itself. I could crop part of the canvas, as well as the logo, but I
could not crop a perfect square. When I did crop the square...(after two
hours of trying) iMovie 11 still viewed the logo as too large and cut off
the top and bottom of the circle.
Hopefully when I get home what you sent will work.
