Brush Cursor rotation while painting?

I am using a Wacom Cintiq with Wacom's Art Pen (Art Pen allows PS bushes to read full rotation). When I hover over and rotate my pen I can see the Brush Cursor rotate and move but when I place a stroke down the cursor does not move or rotate with the stroke. Is there an option that allows your Brush Cursor to stay active while you paint? If not, will this option be available?
Mac OS X 10.7.3
2.5 GHz Intel Core i7
16gb 1333 MHz DDR3
AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB

"This is expected behavior. Unfortunately it would be too big of a performance hit to update the cursor during painting."
So I can only assume by that statement that this feature has actually been created but not implemented into CS6 do to performance issues? I honestly believe that the minds of Adobe can write this feature without having performance issues if Corel Painter can do it. Also looking at the new features and gpu enhancements, why would performance be an issue? This is a beta, at least have the option be available to use or not use for users .
" Is there an option that allows your Brush Cursor to stay active while you paint? If not, will this option be available?"
The first question was answered but not the second question.

  • Brush Cursor Rotation - Preview available?

    The problem is well known:
If you are using a tablet that can detect rotation of the pen you can rotate the angle of your brush along with it. This is very useful in inking and painting. In CS5 you get a preview of the way the brush is rotated - but only with the bristle tip brushes. Normal brushes are completely static in preview. When starting the stroke the preview freezes completely however.
Is there any way to fix this? What reason is there it is not already happening?
This is annoying me no end, as I bought the a wacom art pan to that particular end and now I cannot properly use it. Please fix this, if possible.

  • Brush Cursor Disappears while Enlarging It

The brush cursor is visible while the brush size is small, but upon enlarging it, it gradually disappears, section by section, until it completely disappears and i cannot tell what i am painting or cloning. I have messed around with the preferences, but  to no avail. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Phil

This sounds like an old problem, fixed a while ago, by nVidia.
Visit the nVidia web site and download the latest drivers for your video card.  Hopefully it's modern enough that they'll have new drivers for it that will solve your problem.

  • Regular (not art) brush "ghost" cursor rotation

This feature has actually been requested and discussed elsewhere in the Photoshop forums, but it's worth mentioning again, one, and two, I don't think it's utility has been fully explained.
Chris Cox, who works for Adobe, explained that OS mouse cursor limitations make this feature dififcult to impliment properly. I don't understand the issue well enough to comment, but I can't see why the OPTION shouldn't exist (even if it slows the cursor dramatically).
I frequently use custom brushes for texture and collage work (say, ink splatter brushes or leaves or whatever). You can get a lot more life out of a brush if it can be rotated, so that the textures don't look repetitive.
But here's the key thing -- it's VERY important that you can see the angle of the brush -- a leaf, say, may have a rounded bottom and pointy tips. If you're using it as an eraser to create a jagged edge, for example, you need to know that the pointy tip is facing the correct side. Doing this blind is obviously a chore. What's more, the cursor doesn't need to be especially responsive as I'm basically just stamping with the brush, rather than fluidly painting with it.
I have to imagine that the already existing OpenGL support could help greatly here. I mean, if realtime canvas rotation is possible, rotation a cursor ghost shouldn't be THAT hard, right?
P.S. Corel Painter doesn't exactly do this well either (with custom "capture dabs"), so the feature would be an way for Photoshop to jump further ahead.

Thanks for the response -- I agree that in general responsiveness does matter. What I was saying is that if cursor lag is an insurmountable problem, leaving it as an option would still be helpful as there are many times when even a sluggish (but accurate) cursor ghost would be of immense help.
You could also come up with a hybrid solution. Create a static brush cursor outline (as exists now), but create an option to superimpose an arrow over it that indicates rotation direction. While not perfect, I imagine my brain would grow used to it pretty quickly.
I realize that these features are harder to impliment than they sound, and that Photoshop's primary audience is Photographers, not painters, so I appreciate Adobe's willingness to at least consider the feature.

  • After considerable, my copy of PSCS6 seems to "stop". brush cursor moves but no paint

    I use iMac i7 with lion 10.7.5
After a "considerable" amount of editing, photoshop just stops responding. For example, the paint brush cursor will move but no paint can be applied. Have about 10-12 layers, guessing abour 70 history steps.
Must exit the app and restart, at which time it will behave normally. I use latest, almost, OS and have 8GB ram..
    any ideas?
    thanks,
    vince

Is it just the brush tool that is acting up? And when you say 'must exit the app', are you able to normally close the app or do you have to Force Quit it? In other words, is the Photoshop failing to respond after sometime/ crashing?
And while you have 8GB of RAM on your iMac, we need to know how much RAM is allocated to Photoshop itself. Go to (Title Bar) Photoshop > Preferences > Performance and take a screenshot of that dialog box and post it here. It will look like this:
With this, we can see how much RAM you're letting Photoshop use.

  • Brush Cursor - Art Pen Rotation

    Hi !
Today I downloaded the trial of PS CS5.
I think its a really great step for digital painting and I love
the new bristle and mixer brushes-
But one thing really disappointed me. I´m using a Wacom Art Pen to control
the angle of the brushes by the rotation of the pen.
When I first tried a Bristle Brush, I was really happy that i was able to rotate
the brush cursor with my pen.. but when i started painting, the brush stopped rotating
and stayed in the initial direction.
Even worse: The normal brushes are still as static as in the previous Photoshop versions.
By not showing the rotation of the brush, it is really hard to set an precise brush stroke
    with the right angle.
Am i missing something, it is a bug or is Adobe still planing not to change this disadvantage ?
    Best regards,
    Florian

I think the question about the CPU was directed at another poster, but mine is a new Dell with a fast processor and fast card. It works great with the bristle brushes.
I'll give you an example of what I need to do. If I were to make a new brush out of the words "AIR MAIL" and want to rubber stamp those words around on my image at specific places and at specific angles, I need the ghost outline of the AIR MAIL brush to rotate on the fly as I rotate the barrel of the pen. When I click once on the screen, I want the lettering to rubber stamp the image in the color of choice and relative to the amout of pressure I apply, but I want to be in control of the angle the rubber stamp is applied.
So, I can't use the brushes "randomizer" feature because I want to know and control exactly where and how the imprint will be applied.
The AIR MAIL stamp is only a visual example of what I am needing to do. In reality, I have some spatter brushes that are essentially different on all sides. I am using that kind of brush to paint in a layer mask around the edges on an image layer to reveal the white background layer underneath. I need to be able to see exactly what part of the brush is being painted in with black and rotate it regularly to keep from getting too many repetitive strokes. I don't need these brushes to tilt, only rotate as I rotate the pen in my fingers, but I definitely need the ghost preview of the brush on the screen before I apply it.
Currently, I am only seeing the rotation behavior I need when using one of the eight or nine special bristle brushes.
I am using Windows 7 Ultimate with Adobe Photoshop CS5
    Memory - 12GB Tri-Channel DDR3  SDRAM at 1066MHz - 6 DIMMs
    Processor - Studio XPS 9000, Intel Core i7-920  processor (8MB L3 Cache 2.66GHz)
    Video: NVIDIA GeForce GTX260
Tablet: Intuos4 Medium with Art Pen
    Thanks again,
    M. Jackson

  • Brush (cursor) lag making Photoshop unrealistic option for use?

    Hello forum,
I am making the move from traditional media to using the computer for generating art.  I purchased CS4 because my first machine didn't have 64 bit support.  One of the behaviors in the Photoshop application that had me suspend any further study with it was the nasty brush lag as I moved either my mouse OR my pen (I have a Wacom Cintiq) while 'painting'.
I've search diligently online for answers, read the forum posts, even called support.  The best they could offer was deleting the application cache data on my Windows XP machine.  I suppose that helped a bit, but it still proved quite laggy.
Understanding a bit about how computers work, I know processor power, GPU power and memory, and system memory can have big effects on improvement.  So I purchased the Toshiba Qosmio with an i7 quad core processor, 4 GB of fast system RAM, and a great nVidia graphic card with 1GB of memory.  This new machine is Windows 7, so I was delighted I could use the CS4 64 Bit version of Photoshop!
Surely this machine would tear it up, right?  Nope, same issue.  For example, if I take my pen (or mouse) and test the painting of a stroke diagonally across the screen, I will see anything from a fraction of a second delay to nearly 2 seconds of delay, after which the brush stroke 'appears' along the expected path, depending on how fast I drag my brush and how long the path is.
So now when I paint my brush strokes have to be short, slow strokes because the behavior of the application is requiring it if I want to see my strokes right away.
Now I'm not an digital artist, not yet, so I don't have an expectation on whether this is expected behavior or not.  I can't imagine it is, could it?  When I used GIMP for a few months, I don't remember ever seeing this kind of lag on the mouse cursor.
I want to stay in the world of Photoshop for my digital art study; nearly all of my study materials make use of it for tutorials and examples.  But I have to find out what's going on with this first.  Right?

The performance you're seeing is not normal, and certainly not acceptable.
The thing that seems to be constant across your different systems is the Wacom tablet.  I have no tablet myself, as my uses of Photoshop are serviced fine by the mouse, and everything is instantaneous.
I have been reading posts in this forum on and off about the 64 bit drivers for the Wacom not being solid...  Maybe someone else more knowledgeable in tablet operations can volunteer more info on the status of that.
Also, I have read that having the "Adobe AIR" panel open can cause lag and slowness.
Just some things to think about.
    Best of luck.

  • Photoshop CS4 brush cursor bug on Thinkpad T61p

I've got a Thinkpad T61p with a Nvidia Quadro FX 570M onboard (driver version: 6.14.11.7471). There seems to be a bug with the graphics driver in conjunction with the new Adobe Photoshop CS4. Photoshop now uses GPU-optimization with more brush capabilities. Unfortunately the cursor clips when using brush-sizes larger than 64px. One can see the bug on the nvidia cs4 promotion "brush resizing" at http://www.nvidia.com/object/adobe_photoshop.html. Nvidia corrects this bug in newer driver versions, but lenovo only offers a WinXP-display-driver from 2008-04-28.
Does anyone know any workround? I've tested somo older forceware drivers (178.24) with partial success. The display bug in Photoshop is fixed, but e.g. After Effects CS4 crashes while detecting the GPU.
Message Edited by mikey on 10-23-2008 03:20 AM

Today I've installed the latest Forceware Drivers 180.60 from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ to test the bug behaviour.
The brush cursor now seems to be able to handle big brush sizes but the performance is reduced noticable. When painting inside a new document the rendering of the brush path is done after painting over the area, even when using small brush sizes.
So let's wait until Nvidia/Lenovo roll out a new driver.

  • No Brush Cursor & It's Not Caps Lock!

I've been trying to get my cursor to display Brush size in Illustrator CS 5.1 and I only get the Paintbrush icon, or if I hit Caps Lock the Precision crosshair. I'm at a loss, in Photoshop I can set up cursor options with no problem, but the only setting I can find in the preferences in Illustrator is to "Use precise cursors" which does not display brush size. I have googled this topic and everyone only mentions the Cap Lock issue.
Believe me, I am well aware of what caps lock does to brush display and that is NOT the issue here. I just simply cannot get my cursor to display the brush size. Any suggestions that you can throw my way would be greatly appreciated. BTW, I do not have this problem with displaying Brush sizes on my cursor in Photoshop.

    cant be done:
brush in AI is COMPLETLY different to a brush in PS (Obv).
let me try explain: you dont use a brush in Illy to paint, you use it to "decorate" a stroke. Now: The brush setting may be a round brush at 10 pt, and your default stoke at 1 pt. What "size" circle must show? Or a calligraphy brush... as illy must calculate the appearence of the brushed sroke? Then what about decorative brusher with floral designs which will be so different through the stroke. Then there are scatter brushes, pattern brushes... how big must the "circle" be then...
I cant see what you want EVER happening or featuring in illustrator.
    hope that clarifies things,
    G

  • Aperture 3.6: Disappearing Brush Cursor

I experience the following issue with brushes in Aperture:
In full-screen mode the brush only gets bigger to a certain amount, than does not visibly get bigger any more. If I try to paint with it, I can only see the standard mouse-pointer. The brush though, paints in the selected size. This is of course out of control, cause I can't really see what I am doing there. The brush works fine to a rather small brush size.
    My config:
    iMac 5K, AMD Radeon R9 M295X, OS X Yosemite 10.10, Aperture 3.6
    Any help is appreciated.
    Rainer

    Hi,
the problem is solved - or maybe it disappeared just so. I made two changes to my machine:
First I got rid of x-rite profiling software and the running services wich came w/ the calibration software. I just did this, because the services caused lots of dumps and console messages.
Then I changed the preview size in Aperture preferences to "don't limit"; I had them limited to "half-size". I just guessed that using my library from a machine with a much bigger resolution (imac 5K) could have anything to do w/ my problem.
I did NOT generate new previews or had my originals newly developed. At least I did not tell Aperture to do so.
I do not know if all of the above has anything todo with the brush-cursor in Aperture, but it simply works now. Brushes size from zero to 200 and back flawlessly.
    Cheers,
    Rainer

  • My brush cursor disappear when i zoom in

    Hi,
My Photoshop has been upgraded to CS5.5 now.
When I used my circle brush tool before, I can see the size of my brush in a circle so
I know where to paint. Now this circle is disappearing when I use my brush tool when zooming in the picture.
I did change the Cursors in Perferences, I set it to Normal Brush Tip and Full Size Brush Tip.
Same thing again. I could only see the whole circle brush when looking at my image at 100%.
When I zoom in more than 100%, circle brush is gone and is replaced with a quarter circle.
    See the image before.
Do anyone know what I'm missing and what setup I need to make in order to bring back
    the normal brush cursor?
    Thanks.

Most likely, like other people posting this exact same problem in this forum, you have an older NVidia video card driver that you haven't updated in the past year or two.
Go update the driver from NVidia's web site.

  • Brush cursor turns to arrow cursor.

I'm using a wacom bamboo pen and touch, running windows 7 OS, and photoshop cs5 64bit.
This happens randomly, but when it does, it makes photoshop useless.
When I use a brush and start to paint, the cursor changes into an arrow. With this, precision is lost.
    Any help and suggestions?

I'm seeing the same issue on the Mac, under 10.6.4 and Photoshop CS5 in 64-bit.
CS4 was fine, and it seems to happen with my mouse as well so not sure if it's the Wacom driver. Will see if there's an update.

  • Mouse cursor will not change to brush cursor in photoshop cs6

Hello can I ask for your help please.
My mouse cursor will not change to a paint brush cursor.  I have tried the preferences/cursor selection but it still does nothing, I have also tried resetting the brush tool and still nothing.
I am also using a wacom but I don't think its my tablet, I am using a IMac.
    Thank you.

    Is the Caps Lock on?

  • Disappearing brush cursor

    Hi All,
I've just installed Aperture 3 bought in the App Store on my MacBook Pro and I've got rather annoying problem with it. When I want to use a brush to edit a picture the brush cursor (the two circles) disappears after a split of a second leaving me with the arrow cursor only. It's not there when I want to adjust the brush size or its softness either.
I tried installing it again but nothing changed.
If anyone could possibly help me to solve this problem I would really appreciate it.

    What happens if you:
    • Repair Permissions (Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility/First Aid)
    • Bring the OS and Aperture to their current versions
    • Repair Permissions again
    • Set the Mac to 32-bit operation
    • Restart the Mac and run only Aperture

  • Brush Cursor don't work correctly in Adobe Photoshop CS 5

I'am using Adobe Photoshop CS 5.1 on my brand new MacMini Server (Mid 2011). Everytime I change the diameter of my brush below 500-600px the brush cursor disapperar. It show the reagular Cursor. The Position of the Brush is also wrong because it has a vertical and horizontal offset, which makes it unpossible for me to use it. This worked correctly of years now with Photoshop CS3 and CS 4 in Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard also with Photoshop CS 5. For me it seems to be a Problem of the Intel HD 3000 Graphicsdriver and Adobe says that too. No Way to fix it for Adobe. Other People have the same Problem on their MacBook Airs (Mid 2011). The Problem is also well know at the Adobe Photoshop Support Forum.
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/brushes_not_working_on_201 1_macbook_air
Same Problem with Brushes in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.4.
Hope the Apple will fix that soon, because I'am a Photographer and bought the new mac to improve Speed in Photoshop.

FOUND A WORKAROUND:   . .  at least it works in my configuration (for two days in a row now).
If I have my external screen (Eizo CG223W) turned on, in standby mode, when i boot-up my mac, and the mini wakes up the screen from it's standby mode: the Photoshop brush issue is there.
If i have the external screen powered off during boot up, and power the screen on manually afterwards, the brush issue is not there
I have no explanation for this but it is a workaround (though not for Macbook Pro users).
There's one issue though: my mouse preferences are changed with this boot-up procedure, the speed is lowered to half speed and i have to change that manually in System preferences every time.
Does this work for others who have this issue too?
