Brush & photoshop preferences

Hey, so my cat enjoys jumping on my computer while I'm photoshopping and he often hits shortcuts and resets my workspaces. The most recent and annoying change is that when I paint in layer masks with the brush tool I don't see things change as I work, they only update if I turn the overall layer invisible and then visible. The healing brush and stamp tool work normally with instant feedback. I've tried deleting the preferences files to see if this would fix the problem, but it did not. And, since I deleted my preference files, I can no longer just click on the object that I want to move or adjust, I have to click on the actual layer in the layer panel, can someone remind me how to change this back as well?

The first problem is really strange. Not sure what could be causing that.

For your second problem, it's likely that "Auto Select" needs to be enabled for the Move Tool on the tool options bar:

How to delete/reset Photoshop preferences

Background: Sometimes Photoshop can exhibit odd/erratic/weird behaviour.
The first step is to make sure that you are running the latest version of Photoshop, by applying the relevant updates for your version of Photoshop listed on this page:

Photoshop versions after 6.0 (including 7.0, CS, CS2 ...CS6):
A:If a tool is behaving erratically, first try resetting just that tools preferences, via the method outlined by Len Hewitt in the post below this one.
If you have larger troubles, hold down Alt, Ctrl, and Shift keys (Mac: Command, Option, Shift) while starting up Photoshop. A dialog box will appear asking if you wish to delete the preferences/settings file.
A2: You can also simply search your hard drive for a *.psp file and delete it. It will be called something along the lines of "Adobe Photoshop X Prefs.psp".
Under Vista or 7, look here:

Under Win 2k/XP the preference file will be found at:

Photoshop Versions 5.5 and earlier:
Search for photos*.ini and delete (the file will be called photos followed by the version number - i.e photos55.ini for Photoshop 5.5, photos40.ini for Photoshop 4.0)
Resetting the preferences will restore Photoshop settings to factory defaults.
If removing the preferences files does not resolve the problem you should check the Photoshop Support pages for further guidance.

Note that it is possible to keep a 'healthy' copy of the Preferences file, so that you simply overwrite the preferences file if needed. That way you won´t have to re-adjust your preferences in Photoshop after a Reset.

Is one of your tools behaving strangely — or not the way you expect — in Photoshop?
For every tool in Photoshop's Tool Box, the user may choose to fully reset JUST that tool to its default settings. To do this, look up to the Options Bar. On the far left side you will see a button which displays an icon of the currently selected tool. This is the Tool Preset picker. Right-click on this button, and you will see two entries:
Reset Tool
Reset All Tools
The first thing to try when a tool is not acting like you expect it should is to apply the command "Reset Tool" from this menu. Often this will cure a problem, and by starting your Photoshop troubleshooting with this procedure you aren't resetting Photoshop's entire behavior and environment to factory default in a wholesale manner. Instead, you're just getting that particular tool back to its default settings, leaving the rest of Photoshop's settings alone.
The second option would be more appropriate in a classroom setting, to get a "fresh version of Photoshop", rather than for troubleshooting Photoshop issues.
If this doesn't cure the problem you're having, then you may need to move on to deleting/resetting all of your Photoshop preferences to factory default.

Why are my photoshop preferences reverting?

Sometimes when I start up Photoshop CS6, I discover that all my preferences have reverted to defaults. I can go back and make them the way I want them but it's pretty annoying. I haven't figured out a pattern for when this happens. Any ideas?

While JJMack's method of saving a copy of (some of) your preferences files has solid merit, what I prefer to do when upgrading to a new version of Photoshop is to record an action while I go about setting all my Photoshop preferences to my liking.
If I'm forced to trash or reset my preferences at any point in time, a one click plays back the action and leaves everything exactly the way I want it.
Noel is correct in that Photoshop only saves its preferences only on an orderly exit (quit) of the program.

Reset Photoshop Preferences

Hello,
I try to reset Photoshop CS6 preferences on Mac OS X 10.6.8 with shortcut key and remove preference file but nothing change. I want to uncheck the check mark on scratch disk setting. I have only one disk on Mac. It has no scratch disk setting originally. May I have your suggestion to restore it.

If you only have one disk (non partitioned), then you can't uncheck the
scratch disk in the photoshop preferences.
You need to have a scratch disk enabled in photoshop or photoshop wouldn't
work very well, if at all.

Photoshop preferences - cursors

I am running Photoshop CS3 on Windows XP
Sometimes when I use photoshop the cursors are 'Normal brush tip' and 'standard' as I have set them up in the preferences and sometimes they revert back to what I assume must be the default settings. The only way I can get back to the settings I have set is to close Photoshop, close windows and start again. This is most annoying!
Any ideas anyone please.
By the way I'm not the only one with this problem.

It's usually caused by pressing the Caps Lock and can be undone the same way.
If it is really happening with no action from the keyboard, try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.

You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.

Export/Import Photoshop preferences, plugins, etc.?

I need to wipe my computer clean and reinstall windows.
re-installing Photoshop is not a big deal, but I have several preferences, plugins, saved layer styles, actions, etc. That I do not want to loose and will not be retained.
Is there a way I can back all this up, and so when i reinstall photoshop its the same as it is now?
I also will want to do this with Dreamweaver, After Effects, and Illustrator.

1: Give Them A Home:
First, decide where you’ll be backing up your settings. Be it a folder on your hard drive, a CD/DVD or an offsite storage service. Wherever it is find a consistent place that will be separate up from your main computer should you have a total crash.
2: Archive your actions:
Photoshop is not a place to store actions. When you download a new action don’t just load it in the actions palette and expect it to stay there. PS will retain the actions so long as the preference to keep it loaded remains. Also deleting an action in PS does not actually delete the file, it just removes it from the action palette. As long as you have your action files safely stored you’re good. But, if you load an action, and then delete the file expecting PS to retain it forever, your doom is sealed.
I like to make a “favorite actions” set that I store with my other actions. This way all my commonly used actions are in one set that I can load fast. I keep it in PS all the time, but it’s backed up should I have a crash. My other actions are nearby as well, but I load them only occasionally since all my favorites are in one set. You can do this by making a new action set (folder) within PS, then drag your favorite actions into it from other sets, then save your favorites set in a safe place.
2: Saving Brushes & More With Preset Manger.
In PS go to Edit/Preset Manager. A window will pop up that contains a dropdown to select your brushes, swatches, gradients, styles, contours, patterns, custom shapes or tools. If you have any custom settings for any of these it’s as simple as going to the manger, selecting what you want to manage and saving the set to your backup location.

3: Backing Up Keyboard Shortcuts:
Keyboard shortcuts can save a ton of time, and once you set up custom ones you’ll want them to be there. I for example set CMD+F to flatten since I use it so often. If I get on a machine that does not have the setting, I quickly miss it. All you need do is go to up to the menu and choose Edit/Keyboard Shortcuts. Slick the save icon, and save the current shortcuts in a file. Now you can easily load it on any machine by simply loading the saved file.
Power User Tricks:
There’s more you can backup than what’s on the surface of PS. Workspaces for example control the location of your palette’s and menus. Most know that you can save workspace by simply going to Window/Worskpaces. Thing is, there’s not really a built in method of exporting those workspaces for backup. To do this we have to talk about the Power User method.
Outside of Photoshop, go to your application (programs) folder and find Photoshop. We’re using CS3 for this, but it should be similar with other versions. Inside the PS folder look for the Presets folder, and inside that you’ll find stuff like Workspaces, and all kinds of other settings. You can just copy and paste things from here, to your backup and be good to go.
Photoshop CS4 Notes: (UPDATE)
Most locations are the same in CS4. At the moment it looks like the only differnce if the Workspaces location. Rather than being inside the folder that contains Photoshop it’s found in these locations. Loaction information for other settings in CS4 can be found here.

Can't find my Photoshop preferences file

I KNOW this is stupid, but on Windows 7, 64-bit, with all the stuff turned on to show me hidden files and system files and everything, Photoshop CS6 (13.0.1?), and Lightroom 4.3
I'm trying to follow the advice that everything I do in Photoshop should be backed up somewhere other than as part of Photoshop, I periodically move all the stuff in
the Users/<me>/AppData/Roaming/Adobe... folders to a backup drive... And, by and large, I can find and figure out what stuff is.
But, I can't find my preferences file. I went to the Adobe help, and it says:
General settings
Adobe Photoshop CS6 Prefs.psp (32-bit version)
Adobe Photoshop X64 CS6 Prefs.psp (64-bit version)
Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS6/Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings
I don't have ANYTHING called "Prefs.psp" in the Users stuff. As near as I can tell, I don't have anything called Prefs.psp ANYWHERE on the disk..
Do I get to pick where this file gets put? Could I have put it somewhere ELSE? Or, is it actually named something else?
I wouldn't be much concerned about his, but my latest stupid human trick (we won't go into that please) has convinced me I should do a better job of making sure I can restore Photoshop and Lightroom in the event of a "small error in judgement"

As far as backups, I've got a good setup, EXCEPT for the system backup... I'm using Syncback to back up everything but the O/S, and I've recently added a backup that takes everything from the system except the Windows folder tree... So, every night at 1 a.m. everything gets backed up to internal backup drives and a large external backup drive.
What I'll do is add an (hopefully) automated Windows Backup to the other backups. Given the appallingly stupid things I periodically do I figure I need suspenders and a belt.

Edit In Photoshop & Preferences

I must have done something to mangle my preferences because in my Preferences it shows Edit in Photoshop not found. Under additional external photo editor it shows Photoshop.exe.
Yes, Lightroom goes to Photoshop CS2 when I click it "Edit in Photoshop.exe" under the Photo edit pull down. But under that pull down, the "Edit in Photoshop" is not recognized. My issue is that I cannot get my RAW files directly from Lightroom into Photoshop CS2. It only opens files as PSD.
Can someone tell me what I have done and how I can reverse this. I am running 1.4.1

Adobe has a tech note that describes a fix for it ; it proposes 2 solutions, but I would try Solution 2 first - i.e the one to generate a registry key. The link to the article is:

Any change to my Photoshop Preferences refuses to be saved.

I just got a new Macbook Pro, with Mavericks installed, and my Photoshop CS5 is experiencing issues. Changes to Preferences cannot be saved due to the file being locked or a permissions error.
But when I go into the 'Get Info' panel in Finder:
It says I have "custom access", and Read & Write. I am the only user on this laptop so I assume I am an administrator. Also the option for it to be "locked" is unchecked and greyed out with no indication on how to access it.
I had no issues before I began using this new computer, on my previous Macbook Pro the program worked fine in this regard.
So what is happening? How can I get my Photoshop to save my Preferences changes?
I am using Photoshop CS5 Extended Version 12.0 x64
My computer is specifically a Macbook Pro 13 inches, (mid 2012), with OSX 10.9.1 (it says all updates are installed as well)
The processor is a 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7
The memory is 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
And the installed Graphics Card is Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
I'd really appreciate your help on this matter as it relates to another issue I'm dealing with involving the OpenGL and Video Card graphics accelerators preventing me from using the rotate tool. I suspect I can't do anything about that problem unless I'm able to save changes to my Preferences first.

Hey, I've got the same issue - get the same message.
And I've gone to my Preferences folder - and gave myself Read & Write Access to the folder but I still get that same message above when I quite CS5 Photoshop. And when I look in the Preferences folder - there is not Photoshop. Is there something I'm missing?

I have Photoshop CS3 and I just recently downloaded it to my new computer. My red eye tool is not under the spot healing brush like it is suppose to be. where could it have gone? any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

What happens if you use Shift+J to cycle through the 4 tools in that slot in the toolbox?

Photoshop preferences....

.I'm trying to figure out if I have my preferences set up in Photoshop set up correctly...I have 18 GB of RAM and my smudge tool isnt responding fast enough, its laggin and sluggish. Any suggstions???? Here's my system:
Dell Precision 690
Xenon Quad Core 8GHrtz
Geforce 560 Ti 1GB card
18GB RAM..
plenty of HD space in the TBs...
I am particularly trying to find out what settings I can best set for my system to move fast enough in Photoshop CS6 Extended....Prefs>Performace>

Hey thanks for responding. Yes I do have the sizes pretty high, and I do hv a pretty high spec system,..thing, is, I keep thinking it should move things like smudge and liquify at specs such as these:
a comic book page piece of art @ 400 Rez and 4440W x 6800H pixels, basically a 11.1 x 17 inches document. I thought it would move faster on these sizes, no? Since you mentioned it, should I get another processor? Bc that was something Iwas gonna do.
The liquify worked real fast in the liquify editor and it took a few seconds to process it after I hit OK.....

Brush tip preference

using mac OS 10.6.8 with CS5 Xtnd: I don't get it! When I first began using this app (and I've spent much time swearing at it with no result) and until recently and in either normal or full size mode showing xhairs and whether I use as paint or erase the effect is always considerably less than the diameter of the tip. What is with this? I require a tip that goes right to the edge of what is supposed to be the tip....as it is there is abolutely nothing precise about this. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Much thanks to R_Kelly. This fixed the problem. It was really driving us crazy!!!
The cursor was not set to normal causing this issue.
Simply it is in System Preferences / Universal access then the mouse or mouse/trackpad tab. Set cursor to normal.

How do I get Camera RAW 8.2 to show up in Bridge?

The latest ACR for CS6 is ARC 8.7.1 and ist get installed into a common folder that both Photoshop and Bridge use. CS6 perpetual Windows should be at level 13.0.1.3 and Mac at level 13.0.6 where subscription CS6 version should be at version 13.1.2. You may have installed ACR 8.2 into Photoshop CS6 Plug-in folder that is not the correct location.. Where it goes depends on your OS Platform and level.

Brush/pencil not working in Photoshop

My brush/pencil tool isn't working in Photoshop CS5...when I try and use it it just makes a dot and doesn't allow me to draw a continuous line...

I got called away, so excuse me for not getting back sooner.
I did not know you were using a tablet. If you disconnect the tablet does the mousepad or trackpad give the same results?
If so, you may try resetting prefs. I do not know if you are using a Mac or PC
