Brush Tool Cursor (Quick Question)

Normally, the shape of the selected brush appears as the cursor. Occasionally, brush tool cursor is only a crosshair that doesn't reflect the current brush. I'm assuming the answer is a simple shortcut key. How does one force the cursor to be the brush shape?

Are you using the Photoshop SDK?

  • Quick Selection Brush Tool

I have been trying to follow a fascinating earlier thread about changing the
background of an image. In news:[email protected] , Bob
Warren wrote, "I refined that somewhat again with the selection brush." I
looked this up in Help, where I was confronted with
    Quick Selection Brush tool options
    A. Quick Selection tool
    B. Selection Brush tool
In the Editor, select the Quick Selection Brush tool...
    and on the next page,
In the Editor, select the Selection Brush tool from the toolbox. You may
need to click the Quick Selection Brush tool in the toolbox and select the
Selection Brush from the list of hidden tools that appears.
What is the difference between a Selection Brush, a Selection Brush tool, a
Quick Selection tool and a Quick Selection Brush tool? And which one should
I be using to "refine" a selection?
    Noel

The quick selection tool and the selection brush are grouped together as a subset of the same tool in the toolbox. By default it shows the Quick selection tool. The sentence means that you will see the quick selection tool in the toolbox. To get to the (non-quick) selection brush, you must click the quick selection tool and choose the regular selection brush from the flyout menu.

  • Brush tool appears as a brush not a circle!!!

The title says it all. My brush tool cursor is a brush not the circle.
HELP, i have heard of color select(Alt) and crosshairs(CAPSLOCK) brush cursors but have not heard of a picture of a brush as my cursor!!!!
    Thanks anyway

What do you have set in Edit - Preferences - Cursors?  Standard, I'll bet.
Change it to Normal Brush Tip.

  • Brush Tool and Viewing the Feathering Outline in the Cursor

    Hello,
I am finding that when I use the brush tool, for example when modifying a mask, that the cursor is NOT showing me the feathering outline of the brush. This is starkly different than the view of brushes in ACR and in Lightroom where I can see  the dotted outline of where the feathering begins. I don't know how long this has been the case; maybe always & I am just now noticing.
My question: shouldn't the feathering outline of the brushes show up in the cursor when I am working on a layer or a mask; or is this not possible? If it is possible, how does one alter preferences or whatever so that the feathering outline WILL show up when working directly on a layer or mask??
I am using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom in the Adobe CC Photography plan.
Also, if you have good tutorials to on brushes to recommend, I am interested in trying out some that might help me with brushes overall. I understand the basics but I have difficulty controlling brush parameters.
    Regards,
    Randy

    Benjamin,
Thanks. I was just trying that out & it is helpful to hear that I am choosing the best option for my purposes. I would like it better if it looked the same as the brushes and feathering in ACR and Lightroom. At least with this 'full brush size' option in the preferences I can now better predict the full area that the brush will affect, even the feathering. Without it, I find I am always hitting non-target areas with feathered modifications that I don't want.

  • How do I select a square brush for the brush tool in CS6?  Sorry if this is a simple question, but nothing has ever been simple for me in Photoshop.

How do I select a square brush for the brush tool in CS6?  Sorry if this is a simple question, but nothing has ever been simple for me in Photoshop.

I don't believe there is a square brush among the sets that ship with Photoshop, but there are plenty to download, and it is super easy to make one.
Just drag with the rectangular Marquee tool, fill with black on a new layer, and go Edit > Define brush preset

  • Photoshop CC flashing window while using quick selection or brush tools.

Whenever I am using the quick selctions tool or brush tools, basically anything that involves movement, part of my work space begins to flash. Any way I can fix it? I originally thought it was my exernal display, but then noticed it only happens in PSD.

Chris - I am running 10.9.1 as of now and unfortuneately I am running Intel drivers. Updating the Photoshop CC Application helped, but every now and then I am getting a few flashes. It is way better than before though, it was getting untolerable.

  • Quick selection & smart brush tools are freezing

Hello!  As of the past couple days I have had issues using my quick selection and smart brush tools.  Every time I try to use either as soon as I start lassoing part of my image it freezes.  I can't click Command+D, I can't click anything else in my toolbar, I can't open up a new picture.  The only thing I can do is to Force Quit.  I recently downloaded Yosemite for my MacBook Pro and wonder if the issue could somehow correlate with that.  Any ideas?  Thank you!

    Sure does:

For the sake of clarity and to save people time, Todd is asking about the behaviour of the Patch tool when using it to repair the area next to the young lad's head.  Todd gets a blurred dark tone pretty much regardless of the options he uses.
IMO that's what I would expect to happen because of the close proximity of the other image elements i.e. the lad's neck and the strong lines of his shirt.  I would not choose to use the Patch tool in this situation.  Content Aware Fill makes a better stab at it.

  • Easy Question: Brush tool overlaps dark?

    Hi all,
I'm having an issue with my brush tool - this is probably an easy question to most of you.
Here is an example of my issue, when brush strokes overlap, a darker color is created:
I'm trying to brush with one flat color, with no overlaping effect. Here is a photo of what I'm trying to do, but this example was done with the pencil tool. I want to do this with the brush:
I'd like to be able to switch from the top style to the bottom style when needed.
Thanks for any help with this - the usual way I go about this doesn't seem to work unless I'm doing something wrong, open to options, is this a preferences issue?

If your brush is supposed to be opaque then check Opacity and Flow are 100% in the Options bar when Brush Tool is active.

  • Brush tool paints lower than where the cursor appears

I just upgraded my computer from an imac PPC, Tiger OS to a MacPro, Intel, Leopard OS. I am using PS CS4. Since upgrading my computer, when I use the brush tool, the painting with the brush appears LOWER than the actual brush tool (by a few millimeters). This is driving me crazy, as I cannot accurately use the brush on anything. I have to guess where the brush will paint. This happens with both my Kensington Mouse and Wacom Tablet. I just updated my Wacom Driver (Intuos 2), again, with no luck. I did not uninstall the previous driver, however...and not sure if I should. Thank you for any help! Regina

Just picture the little bug running around making figures of 8.  That's what I see here on Firefox 3.0.10 Mac running in Tiger 10.4.11 on my Mac.

  • Whiten Teeth Problem with Perfect Portrait Tool or Smart Brush Tool

The "whiten teeth" tool does not work ... while using either the "Perfect Portrait With Guided Edit" mode or the "Smart Brush - Quick Fix" mode.  When I select the toothbrush and drag the curser across the teeth (as the on-line instructor did on the Adobe TV video), I get the following message "Could not use the Smart Brush Tool because no adjustment was selected".  Is something wrong with my Photoshop software?  I'm using a MacBook Pro (OS 10.7.1) and Photoshop Elements 9 (updated Oct 1, 2011).  I "unistalled" Photoshop Elements 9 and reinstalled it and I'm still having the same issue.

You could also try using the dodge tool (keep pressing the letter O on your keyboard) until you see the blue dodge tool. No selection is necessary; you simply brush. A lot of people find this much easier but don’t overdo it.
Enlarge your image to about 200% and use the square bracket keys to increase or decrease the cursor size to fit the area to be whitened. Set exposure in the options bar to about 50% or lower. Gently brush over the teeth area until you get them as you like.

  • Apple Trackpad freeze when using brush tools

Apple MacBook Pro Retina, OS X 10.10 Yosemite Beta 1
I've just downloaded Photoshop CC 2014 Trial. I don't use mouse or tablet, but I use Apple Trackpad. When I start using Brush, Clone Stamp, Quick Selection Tool, etc cursor freezes between movements. In previous version of PS (14.2.1) everything is fine. I've made a video to show you this problem.
    Video: PSfreeze.mp4
What should I do to solve this problem?
    P.S. Sorry for my English.

I've just reverted back to the previous build of Photoshop CC and the problem is fixed, so I'm gonna wait till the next release of Photoshop or the final version of Yosemite and give it another shot. My friend tested the same Ps version on his iMac running Mavericks and it worked fine with the Magic Mouse, so it's definitely some kind of incompatibility issue between the current Ps CC build and Yosemite.

  • PSE would freeze every time I use the brush tool !

Hello guys, my name is Abdulrahman and this is the first time I post so please, take it easy on me. I used photoshop elements and premier 12 for about a year now and everything has been working fine. I haven't actually used PSE for a long time (probably since April) and I opened it 3 days ago trying to use the brush tool, but it would freeze. The cursor would stay as the brush icon no matter where I point it and it would not click anything, I have to force quite the application as it says '(application not responding)" next to it. I looked for help online, I updated PSE as well as my operating system (I work on a Mac by the way), I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the application, and I also tried re-creating the preferences file, however nothing worked. Every other tool works fine, it is probably just the brush tool it has problems working with.

    Hi,
We sincerely apologize for the problem that you have been facing while using a trackpad with Photoshop Elements 11 & 12 on Mac OSX 10.10 (Yosemite).
We have been actively working with Apple to resolve this problem as quickly as possible. We're hopeful this will get completely resolved in an upcoming update of Yosemite(MAC 10.10).
In the meanwhile, you have two options to work around this problem:
    1. Option1: Use a mouse instead of the trackpad
    2. Option2: Install a plug-in which should workaround the problem
    Plug-in installation instructions:
    1. Close Photoshop Elements
    2. Download this zip file to a location you can easily find (e.g. your desktop)
    3. Unzip the file, WhiteWindowWorkaround.plugin, and move it to the Plug-In folder:
    • For Elements 12 – //Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 12/Support Files/Plug-Ins/
    • For Elements 11 - //Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 11/Support Files/Plug-Ins/
You can verify the plug-in is installed by launching the Photoshop Elements Editor and choosing Help > System Info... Scroll to the bottom of the text in the dialog and look for the plug-in name "WhiteWindowWorkaround.plugin".
Note: This plugin is a temporary workaround and should be used until this issue is addressed in Mac OSX 10.10 (Yosemite). Please remove this plugin once the issue is officially resolved by Apple.
If you are using a stylus in conjunction with a trackpad, you might see issues with your trackpad. Workaround in this particular case is to use mouse instead of the trackpad.
    Hope this helps!

  • Wacom Cintiq Right Click Brush Tool Problem in CS5

    Hello Everyone,
So I've been trying out the new CS5 and was excited to try out the new brush menu on my cintiq. When I tried it out it was awesome but when I right clicked using either the mouse or pen, the quick access brush menu invokes on the laptop monitor rather than near the cursor like with other tools or other versions of photoshop. It is really annoying to have to drop the pen in order to adjust the brush. Totally slows you down. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?
I've searched around a bit and have yet to hear anyone complain about this. I suspect it might be the same for dual monitor setups? Thus far just CS5 has this glitch with the brush tool.
Any help with this is much appreciated.
    Thanks!
    ~Carlos

I'm having the same issues as you describe.  CS5 (64-bit) and my Cintiq seem to be working well, except for the annyance of the brush window location... I'd like it to "pop up" on the Cintique where I'm doing all of my active work.  Unfortunately, the pop-up window will only open on the main (non-Cintique) monitor.
I've searched the web, the Adobe forums, and the Wacom forums, but very little information is available on this topic.  I would think that there would be a lot more activity on this subject, but perhaps there's a work-around that we haven't found?
    Any help is definitely appreciated!
