Brush Tool Options

In the Product Help section of Photoshop Elements 4.0 it mentions using the More Options menu in the Options Bar to change the brush dynamics such as spacing, hue jitter, etc. When I'm using a brush, More Options does not appear in the Options Bar, only Tablet Options appears. Is it possible to change the brush dynamics in PSE 4 and if so, where do I find the More Options option? Sorry if this makes no sense.

Two and a half years later, Trish, your answer's still good. With my new MacBook Pro I finally stepped up to PSE 6 (after several years on a G3 iBook with PSE 2, in which I probably never used the spacing feature, or at least I didn't remember it -- if PSE2 even had it). I had this brush spacing problem, which I'd never seen in PSE2. Adobe's Help docs didn't help much, because first, they don't say WHERE to find the Options menu (which I found eventually by poking around), and second, my Spacing showed no control adjustment. Finally, with more searching, your point here -- reset the tool -- solved my problem. I'll keep that in mind next time something gets inexplicably screwy. Thanks!

There shold be two sliders in the dialogue box: Fidelity and Smoothness. I have fidelity but not smoothness. I have no idea why.

    adam,
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • Quick Selection Brush Tool

I have been trying to follow a fascinating earlier thread about changing the
background of an image. In news:[email protected] , Bob
Warren wrote, "I refined that somewhat again with the selection brush." I
looked this up in Help, where I was confronted with
    Quick Selection Brush tool options
    A. Quick Selection tool
    B. Selection Brush tool
In the Editor, select the Quick Selection Brush tool...
    and on the next page,
In the Editor, select the Selection Brush tool from the toolbox. You may
need to click the Quick Selection Brush tool in the toolbox and select the
Selection Brush from the list of hidden tools that appears.
What is the difference between a Selection Brush, a Selection Brush tool, a
Quick Selection tool and a Quick Selection Brush tool? And which one should
I be using to "refine" a selection?
    Noel

The quick selection tool and the selection brush are grouped together as a subset of the same tool in the toolbox. By default it shows the Quick selection tool. The sentence means that you will see the quick selection tool in the toolbox. To get to the (non-quick) selection brush, you must click the quick selection tool and choose the regular selection brush from the flyout menu.

  • Blod Brush Tool Pressure Option is Dissabled, why?

Hey, when I try to apply the pressure option for the blod brush tool it appears as dissbaled, watermarked; as well as the further options. I can only use the fixed and random option for each size, angle, and roundness. Can anyone help me through, please? Thanks!! Mexico

Scot's answer is correct and actually I would appreciate it if you marked it as such as it is often a mistake a new user makes it would be nice if other new users could find this thread and Scott's answer by having it marked answrd.
Now what is not apparent is that Adobe went out of its way to give support for hardware they do not manufacture because many of their user use the tablet. However since they do not make the product you have to buy it from the manufacturer.
Adobe also offers as an option twain acquire plug ins but Adobe does not manufactures scanners so you have to buy the scanner and if Adobe did make scanners you would still have to buy the scanner as the people that work to design and build the scanners have to get paid.
The same thing goes for Camera raw which gives you a way to edit photographs as does Photoshop but without the camera nd image files it is pretty useless for editing images.
The same goes for Premiere without the footage, for which you need a camcorder to capture, there is not much you can do with non existing footage.
So you have to buy a camera…
and it goes on and on and on.
BTW get yourself a tablet and life will much easier then what you can do with a mouse.

  • SURVEY: Blend mode options in Brush tool?

This is a survey question for users of all versions of Fireworks. In Fireworks 8, I've noticed a difference in the Brush tool properties depending on whether the selection is an object or a mask—in particular, the Blend mode options do NOT appear in the Properties inspector when a bitmap mask is selected, *unless* the object was selected first, as well as the Brush tool.
Please try the following, and let me know the results:
Starting with the Pointer tool, select a bitmap mask (by selecting its thumbnail in the Layers panel) and then choose the Brush tool.
Does the Blend mode menu appear in the Properties inspector?
Now, with the Brush tool still active, select the thumbnail of the object being masked.
Does the Blend mode menu appear in the Properties inspector?
Now select the Pointer tool, and then re-select the Brush tool.
Does the Blend mode menu appear in the Properties inspector?
Finally, re-select the mask, with the Brush tool still active.
Does the Blend mode menu appear in the Properties inspector?
In Fireworks 8 (on Mac OS 10.6.8), the answers to the above questions are, "No, no, yes, yes." So it is possible to use Blend mode options with the Brush tool when working with a bitmap mask, but it's a convoluted process to get those options to appear. I'm interested in whether later versions of Fireworks exhibit the same behavior. Anyone with a different version, please chime in.
UPDATE: I'd still like to hear from users of Fireworks CS3, CS4, CS5, and CS5.5 on this question! Please take a moment to help. All it takes is a Fireworks document with a bitmap object and a (non-vector) mask. Be sure to indicate what version of Fireworks you're using.

Using Fireworks CS5 on Win 7 same results:
    1. No
    2. No
    3. Yes
    4. Yes, it even seems to work as expected with the Multiply blendmode
Maybe blendmodes are simply disabled because they aren't that useful on a mask bitmap?

  • Sampling color using "Option" key while Brush tool is selected (CS6)

I am used to "Option" clicking on a color, while using the Brush tool, to set the foreground color. In CS6, it is updating the background color instead, even though the "Info" panel clearly says "Click to choose new foreground color" when I hold down the Option key. What setting am I missing?
The foreground color is the active color in the color swatches.
Manually selecting the Eyedropper tool and option-clicking, updates the foreground color. Simply clicking, updates the background color

I think that Conroy has given you the solution, but one can also toggle the Foreground and Background Colors with the X key. I assume that is the same (unless one has remapped it) on the Mac.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Why does option+click when on the brush tool set a background color?

    Hello,
First question posted at Adobe so I hope this is in the right place.  I am using CS5 and am finding that when I option+click when using the brush tool to select a color to brush with, it sets that color as my background color.  I want it to set it to the foreground (obviously) so that I can immediately use the color I've just selected without having to swap the back to front.
I can not seem to find a setting to change this occurrence.  Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hello, this is not the help forum for Photoshop, select your platform on :
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop/
Your issue is due to the fact that you have the background color targeted on the Color panel. Click on the Foreground color, and you will be good to go!

  • Blob brush tool not showing pressure option...?

I am using Illustrator CS4, and I want to use the blob brush tool in conjunction with my Wacom tablet specifically so that I can use the pressure-sensitivity option.
However, when I double-click the blob brush tool to edit the settings, the only settings I have available to me are "fixed" and "random". "Pressure" is dimmed out.
The tablet I am using is a Wacom Graphire2, which does support pressure-sensitivity just fine, and I use it in Photoshop CS4 using the brush tool with pressure-sensitivty turned on, to adjust the size dynamically.
So why is it dimmed out in Illustrator?

Updating the Wacom driver sorted it, thanks!

  • How do I use the brush tool on a video in cs6? It only stays on one frame?

How do I get what I create with the brush tool to stay on every frame in my video? I've got some footage of a car trip and I'm trying to use the brush tool to make a super 8 looking border, but it vanishes when I play the video because its only on one frame.

When Photoshop just won't work properly, try replacing the Preferences file by using this procedure:
Open Photoshop and save your custom goodies. Choose Edit→Presets→Preset Manager to save sets of styles, brushes, and other such bits and pieces you created. Use the Save Actions command in the Actions palette menu to save any sets of custom Actions.
Review your Preferences. Open Photoshop's Preferences and go through each pane, noting your preferred settings so that you can restore your work environment later.
Quit Photoshop. You can close the program like this:
On a Mac: Hold down Command+Shift+Option and restart Photoshop. When prompted, release the modifier keys and confirm, that yes, you do want to replace the Photoshop settings.
On a PC: Restart Photoshop; immediately press and hold down Ctrl+Shift+Alt. When prompted, release the modifier keys and confirm, that yes, you do want to replace the Photoshop settings.

  • New to the Adjustment Brush Tool...HELP!

Hello!  I am fairly new to Lightroom, and the Adjustment Brush tool specifically, and I am having some problems with it!  I have watched tons of tutorials on using it, and it seems relatively easy...although when I go into my program and attempt to use it, nothing happens to my photo...say if I wanted to adjust the exposure on the face of an individual, I will go in and select the tool, decrease the exposure, make the brush and feather the size I want it, and when I go to "paint" the area I want altered, nothing happens?  The pins appear as if to show me that's where I started, but then no change happens to the area I attempted to paint.  Do I need to select something somewhere to be able to actually use the brush to paint?  Any help is appreciated!!  Thank you!!

First, verify that you have painted something. At the bottom is an option that says "Show Selected Mask Overlay", enable this. It will show the area you have painted so far.
If you see pink appear, this is where you have painted so far. Try changing your adjustments more drastically (i.e. move sliders all the way one direction or another). If you see the effect appear, dial things back until you have what you want.
If you do not see pink appear, make sure your Flow and Density sliders are up. This act like opacity, so if they are too low, you aren't laying down much "paint" with your brush.

  • Problem with Wacom Tablet and Brush Tool

When using the brush tool with an Intuos 5 tablet (mostly to edit layer masks), PS will become unresponsive to pen input - that is, I can't draw. The cursor moves, and I can switch tools with the keyboard, but pressing with the pen to tablet does not register. If I click with the mouse, it will register. If I use the spacebar to get the grabber hand then click and drag, the pen will again become responsive. If I click on a palette with the pen, I can draw again.
I have been in touch with Wacom, and at their suggestion, I have:
    1. Downgraded the driver to the previous version.
    2. Reinstalled the driver.
    3. Connected the tablet directly to the computer rather than using a hub or wireless kit
This problem also occurred on my previous computer (mac pro 8x2.8ghz, os 10.8)
When using the same tablet with my laptop, the problem does not occur, nor does it occur when using a Bamboo tablet on the Mac Pro.
I don't see the problem occurring with other tools, but I don't use them as frequently.
One other thing I should mention is that I'm working on very large files (2-6G) but do have 64G of memory installed.
    Currently using:
    Mac Pro 8x2.93ghz
    Mac OS 10.9.1
    PS 13.0.6
I've been back and forth with Wacom via email for about a mothh, and I suspect they are out of troubleshooting options. They suggest the problem is with PS, but I'm not really sure.

    Hi CoGordo4,
Make certain you have "New Art Has Basic Appearance" checked in the Appearance Panel menu.
Also realize that the "Basic" brush, isn't really a brush at all. It simply removes all brush appearances from a stroke.

  • Photoshop CS5 Clone Stamp Tool option-click just stopped working, why?

I've been using clone stamp tool option-click (healing brush  option-click also) on Photoshop CS5 on my Mac 10.6.5 and it stopped  working suddenly on Monday.  Had just used it on Sunday.  So, I've tried  to isolate the problem.
    1. Went to Apple store and my keyboard and  mouse work fine on their inhouse systems running Photosochop CS5.   Problem still exists on home system.
    2. Adobe photoshop suggested I go back to Mac 10.6.3.  I did and problem still exits.
    3. Reset all presets in CS5.  Problem still exists.
    4.  Spent several hours with Adobe Photoshop tech on phone -- he couldn't  make it work remotely either using his keyboard.  Reloaded Photoshop  from scratch.  Problem still exists.
    Question:
Could this be a hardware problem?  Graphic board problem?
Or is this a software problem aside from Mac OS and CS5?

    Hi Joan
It sounds like you are not having fun at all : )
    >I talked with a for fee Mac guru today who says I need to wipe slate clean and install operating system from scratch since I did not use time machine.
.....you ever notice how easy it is for a consultant to tell you what to do when they don't have to do it?
..... I wonder why the guru thought your system was gone if your new user account was working?
If your new user account is working.... why not use it?  The system seems fine but something went screwy with the settings in your original account.
hopefully someone else will chime in here with more insight before you start from scratch.

  • Adobe Flash CS6 Brush Tool Not Smooth

On my Flash CS6, my brush tool has been difficult lately. When I use my Wacom pen tablet and even my mouse, the strokes I draw "correct" too much and it causes an uneven flow. I have the pressure option on, and I draw with the pressure I want it still causes an the uneven flow, especially when I draw curves.
Even when I turn the pressure option off, it still does the same thing: too much "correction", even when the smoothing isn't even that high.
This person's Youtube videos have the same settings as my brush tool; smoothing 50, pressure on. And when he draws his lines are smooth and correct the amount I would like to see.
    My flash is doing this:
The smoothing is labeled at the top of each stroke, and even when I keep the pressure I want, it causes an uneven flow at the smoothing of 50.
I have tried resetting to all defaults, I am updated to the latest version, and I know my tablet is not the issue because my mouse does the same kind of strokes. I try using different smoothing levels, and each level has this really uneven pen flow.
Does anyone know why my lines are so out of control?
    Please help!!! Thank you!!

  • Step backward hotkey not working while using brush tool? - Photoshop CC 2014

    Hi,
I'm using Photoshop CC 2014 in Mavericks. I've tried using the step backward hotkey (command+option+z) and it seems to work fine. Then I use the brush tool and it stops working until I switch to another tool. I'm a digital artist, so I move very quickly while painting, and switching out of the brush tool to step backward on something slows me down terribly. I'll switch and the hotkey works as intended. I've tried changing it to a different set of keys (for example command+z) with the same results. Is this a bug or a feature?

Usually it turns out for tablets that aren't mainstream that they just haven't updated their drivers to work with photoshop cc.
For example, most people don't have problems with wacom tablets in photoshop cc.
One other thing that could possibly be the cause besides the tablet driver is your graphics card driver.
If in photoshop cc you go to Edit>Preferences>Performance and turn off Use Graphics Processor and then restart photoshop cc, does that make a difference?
If it does then perhaps your graphics card driver needs to be updated from the maker of the card.
    (not through windows updates)

  • Problem using Brush tool with layer mask in Photoshop CC.

Using Photoshop CC, working on a layer mask.  Using the Brush tool to paint white to show the effect works like normal.  Painting black has no effect.  Just started doing this in the last two days.

Check you Brush blending mode setting in the tools option bar.
