Brush won't work on Layer Mask ?

Everything has been working fine for years up until now, not sure what I've done, because I didn't do anything, but here it is ...
Can't use brush on a layer mask. Is there a way to enable / disable this feature ?
Thanks.

Thanks for the reply ...
There really is no need for a screen shot, everything is normal. Any layer I create with a layer mask (not quick mask mode) with any blending mode plus no locks on. As one normally would to blank part of a layer out, when I brush (black on white) it doesn't work. However even stranger, it will work inverted (white on black).
I can't see an option for this and never have so I don't know why it would all of a sudden not work. Maybe an option key ?

  • Brush Tool is not working with Layer Mask

    Working with Windows platform, using Photoshop CS4, Brush Tool is not working with Layer Mask, how can I resolve this challenge?

    Also, do you have any Selections active - maybe hidden?
    When you have your Layer Mask's Channel active, do your Colors change to black and white?
    Good luck,

  • Gradient tool to show hide not work in layer masks

    I have a PS CC (201410204.r.310X640 subscription.   When I used CS5 I could use the gradient tool (black and white) to show hide content in a layer mask.  This achieved the correct smoothness I want to achieve.  In CC the tool does not work in layer masks -it removes too much or the reverse, etc.  I have no control at all over what is removed and not.   Is there a fix for this please.   The lack of the gradient tool for this effect is making CC not worth using at the mo to be honest and I am just about to give up on it.
    Many thanks for any help you can offer.

    Thank you for the replies and I apologise for havingn taken so long but have been busy with one thing and another for a few days.
    How to explain?   What I mean is that if I have an image and I, say, then, for example, add a texture image, I could then add a layer mask to the texture lay and working in the lay mark remove or replace the texture mask as I wished... in CS5 I usually used the diamond gradient in little tiny strokes, if necessary, and this removed the texture in with a nice smooth gradient - or replaced it, depending on whether I was using black or white
    Now it does not matter how I use the gradient tool, each 'stroke' just moves the exposed part to a different place in the image
    and no matter whether the colur is set to black or white, each 'stroke' moves the exposed part to another place in the image.
    In order to replace the texture, I have to use the paint brush tool.
    I hope all this makes sense to you clever folks.   I have not reset preferences and tools but it has made no difference.
    Also, I apparently have PS versiib 2014. 2.2 Release   20141204.r30 x 64   - I have updated several times but do not know if this is the correct version.   Any ideas gratefully received.
    Many thanks.  Susan

  • Clipping mask with white brush won't work

    Hi, im using photoshop cs6 on a mac and when I do a clipping mask and click and try to use a white brush to show more of the mask it doesn't work, however when I use the black brush it does work

    Clipping masks are a little different from, say, vector masks. They simply take into account the content in the base layer they're clipped to, whether they're black, white or any other color.
    To reveal with white, you'd have to insert a vector mask on the base layer and work from there.
    ON EDIT: This assumes you have more content in the base layer to work with, so scratch that. You're probably better off just using a vector mask and concealing/revealing that way.

  • Paint brush not working on layer mask

    This is a totally novice question, but...
    When working with a layer mask, my paintbrush isn't showing up on the image. I can see the brush strokes on the layer mark in the layers sidebar, but no brush strokes on the image itself.
    I know it's just me doing something wrong...can anyone tell me what it is?

    I think you are not understanding how layers and layer masks work.
    Look at the following illustration.  The layers panel shows that the left of the image (The right is simply to make room for the layers panel and should be ignored) has solid blocks of red, green and blue.  The layer mask in the top layer (red) has a black rectangle which conceals that area of the layer, revealing the underlying layer.
    The mnomic we use is 'Black conceals and White Reveals'  So where the layer mask is white, the corresponding area in the layer can be seen, and where black, it is like a window looking through to the layers below.
    The Green layer also has a (smaller) black rectangle, so we can see the blue layer below that.
    The blue layer has an even smaller rectangle so we can see the checker board background which indicates transparency.

  • White paint will not work in Layer Mask

    I just installed PS CS6 and when I apply a layer mask to a layer I can paint black to hide the layer, but when painting white to restore the layer there is no effect.  White paint will not restore the layer or modify the mask at all.  The black paint works as usual to hide the layer, but how do I restore an area in a layer mask if not painting white?
    Thanks for any help with this.
    Troy

    That was it.  The blending mode for the brush was set to Darken which doesn't affect black, but obviously does affect white.
    Thanks alot!

  • Why I can't see my Brush Tool effects on my layer mask until I click on the Photoshop window one more time

    I really donut why my Photoshop works like I said on title.
    I cannot see see the Brush effects on my layer mask nor in my history panel until I click on somewhere else in Photoshop.
    This problem really slow down my workflow.
    Does any one know the reason and the solution of my problem here? Please let me know, thanks a lot.

    Update your graphics driver/ turn off GPU usage in the performance prefs. You have an issue with hardware-based transparency handling most likely. Otherwise you could have an issue with your input device, but since you have not provided any system info, we can't really know anything.

  • My brushes won't work with actions in Photoshop such as Save the Dress, Ying-Yang, or Foundation

    When I try to use my brushes with actions in Photoshop, such as Save the Dress, Ying-Yang, or Foundation, they won't work.  I've tried resetting the brushes, changing the opacity, restarting the program, and unlocking the layers.  It was working perfectly, but suddenly just stopped.  When I click on the image, it doesn't do anything.  There is also a small black box next to the action the I am using in the history box.  When my brushes were working, that box would show in white where I used the brushes on my pictures, but now it doesn't register anything that I try to do.

    Have u gotten an answer from anyone on ur situation with the brushes? I am unable to use my brushes as well and I can't figure it out also...
    You would do better starting a new thread, rather than bump a thread from 2012.  Some of those posters might not have used this forum for years, and a lot has changed regards both Photoshop and operating systems since 2012
    You need to give specific information about _your_ problem.
    What version of Photoshop?
    What operating system?
    Which brushes, and if not standard, where did you get them from, or did you make them?
    What is happening, and what have you tried so far to fix it?

  • History Brush won't work

    It's an 8-bit PSD file.  One layer (current, preferred edits) needs some pixels from the original (layer 0).  I make sure to get just layer0 showing, make new snapshot, mark that for the Hx brush.  Target the top layer/visible and go to where I want to repair the pixels.  Paint with the Hx brush.  NOTHING!
    It was occasionally flakey in CS3 and CS5, but this is CS6 and should be rock-solid because I just upgraded.
    Nope.
    Any advice from history brush gurus?
    Win7, maxed on RAM, huge HD, Quad core running at 3GHz each, graphics card enabled etc.

  • My Black brush won't work, I updated my CC to the 2014 version and it worked for awhile but it went back to not working.

    Please help!  All other colors work when I'm using them but nothing happens when I switch to black.

    Check the brush mode in the Options bar.
    Check the layer mode.
    Does this happen i a new document, or only a particular document?
    If still stuck:
    Photoshop version?
    Operating system?

  • Adobe CS5 Eraser tool won't work

    My eraser tool won't work on any adjustment layers I add. It will erase on a background copy but not on a curves or black and white layer. It's strange because my brush tools are working and the eraser tool has been working up until now. It's not even showing up on the thumbnail image and my opacity is set to 100 % and I have tried pencil, block and brush tool. The burn and doge tools won't work either.
    I have tried resetting my tools under the drop down menu awa resetting tool preferences, preferences and restarting the program whilst holding down ctrl, alt, shift. I am working on a Microsoft Windows 7 (OS). Everything else seems to be working okay.
    Any help or suggestions would greatly be appreciated
    Tamzyn

    If you paint Black on the Layer Mask, it will mask the effect of the adjustment in the Adjustment Layer.  Likewise if you paint White on the Layer Mask it will cause the adjustment to take full effect.  Grays in between will cause the adjustment to be only partially applied in that area.
    If you happen to have Black selected for the background color, the Eraser tool will act like a brush painting black (and thus hiding the adjustment) when you use it on the Layer Mask.  That's probably what you did to see the Eraser tool work on an Adjustment Layer in the past.
    As stated above, most folks use the brush tool for working on Layer Masks.

  • Layer mask brush not working

    Brush won't work in Photoshop Elements 12 on layer mask.  Have it set to normal, white and black brush and at 100%.  It was working fine then nothing.

    Best thing is to reset it and it will start working again.  To reset it, click on the small down-arrow as shown in this picture:
    Hope this helps.

  • Can't use the erase tool inside a Layer Mask

    Recently after updating Photoshop CC I noticed that I can no longer use the erase tool inside of a Layer Mask to add or remove areas from/to the mask. The paint brush tool still works inside the mask but the erase tool does not. Any ideas why?

    Make sure your foreground/background colors are set to BW. And, make sure your foreground color is set to the same color you want to erase from the Layer Mask: Black if you want to erase (turn white) the black part of the mask, White if you want to erase (turn black) the white part of the mask.

  • Copy Layer Mask

    As the subject suggests; I'm trying to find a way to copy a layer mask from one group to another.  I've looked around the web, but all I seem to find is a bunch of listener script that makes no sense, making it nearly impossible to get it to work for what I need.  I messed around with a layer script I have to copy layers between documents, but it doesn't seem to work the way I'd expect when trying to set it up for layer masks.  Anyway, the code I use for the layers is below.
                            var theCopyLayer = copyDoc.layers.getByName("Background");
                            var theCopiedLayer = theCopyLayer.duplicate(originalDoc.layerSets.getByName("stone").layers.getByName("mask"), ElementPlacement.PLACEBEFORE);
    The layer mask I need is in the same document on a group; so the document switch isn't necessary.  Does anyone know of a way similar to this that would work for layer masks?  Or is the listener script the only option currently available?  Thanks!

    but all I seem to find is a bunch of listener script that makes no sense
    It may seem like it makes no sense, but that may not be easy to judge.
    This function should work if you enter the (unique) name of the group the Layer Mask of which you want to duplicate onto the app.activeDocument.activeLayer.
    function duplicateLayerMask (originLayerName) {
    // =======================================================
    var idMk = charIDToTypeID( "Mk  " );
        var desc2 = new ActionDescriptor();
        var idNw = charIDToTypeID( "Nw  " );
        var idChnl = charIDToTypeID( "Chnl" );
        desc2.putClass( idNw, idChnl );
        var idAt = charIDToTypeID( "At  " );
            var ref1 = new ActionReference();
            var idChnl = charIDToTypeID( "Chnl" );
            var idChnl = charIDToTypeID( "Chnl" );
            var idMsk = charIDToTypeID( "Msk " );
            ref1.putEnumerated( idChnl, idChnl, idMsk );
            var idLyr = charIDToTypeID( "Lyr " );
            var idOrdn = charIDToTypeID( "Ordn" );
            var idTrgt = charIDToTypeID( "Trgt" );

        desc2.putReference( idAt, ref1 );
        var idUsng = charIDToTypeID( "Usng" );
            var ref2 = new ActionReference();
            var idChnl = charIDToTypeID( "Chnl" );
            var idChnl = charIDToTypeID( "Chnl" );
            var idMsk = charIDToTypeID( "Msk " );
            ref2.putEnumerated( idChnl, idChnl, idMsk );
            var idLyr = charIDToTypeID( "Lyr " );
            ref2.putName( idLyr, originLayerName );
        desc2.putReference( idUsng, ref2 );
        var idDplc = charIDToTypeID( "Dplc" );
        desc2.putBoolean( idDplc, true );
    executeAction( idMk, desc2, DialogModes.NO );
