Brushed Metal Effect

Hey guys,
I need to create a brushed metal effect like this header for this website: http://www.championsheetmetal.com/
The only tutorials I have been able to find are for different metal effects. I would also like to be able to create the shine/light effect that is on the letter H,P, and N of the website header. Any ideas on how to do this? Any tutorials that will help me achieve this effect?
Thanks

The first thing I would look at doing to get the brushed metal effect would be to scan or photograph actual brushed steel then using it as a pattern to overlay on the text.  Other ways include using the motion blur filter to streak different shades of gray, black and white onto a gray background.  When attempting to produce the lighting effect I would look at the render section of the filter effects.  Render the light source above and to the left of the object and use a long specular light that keeps a bright midsection.  Also the satin layer style may be useful to make the effect more believable.
Personally I prefer to get the metal effects from reality and scan or photo them into the computer.  There are some amazing spray paints that make cardboard look like stone or marble.  Get messy, dirty and out in the real world.  Tour a junkyard, goto a classic car show and take pictures of the shiny paint jobs and bumpers.  Your effects will look 10x better if they are based in reality.
Always keep an open mind and use every tool in the box at least once.

  • Lost brushed metal how do I get it back

I lost my brushed metal theme to my safari. I was wondering how do I get it back. I used some program called safari accelerator I don't remember the name. It disabled my brush metal. I don't really like this new look. I thought I would go back to the old look. Unless there are other themes I can use for Safari?

    Hi,
It sounds like you mean Safari Enhancer. Download that again to re-toggle your preference. Other than the styles offered via Safari Enhancer, there's not much you can do to Safari (it's not designed to be easily skinnable unlike say Firefox).

  • New Template: OSX Brushed Metal

Okay folks, I've had this template in the works for a long time now, and I've just been trying to work with too many other things so I need to release this and move on.
It's not quite ready yet and here's the deal... the more I worked with it, the less I liked it. It's too cold and uninviting for me. HOWEVER, you might love it so I don't want to get in the way of this thing anymore.
I need suggestions and input into how to make this thing great. I'll take all your feedback and incorporate it and then finish it up and hopefully have a download for you tonight (like in 12 hours).
Here's the link to a demo site that's using it:
    http://web.mac.com/sboben/iWeb/OSX/
This demo site was built entirely with a blank OSX template page. I haven't configured the photo, blog or podcast pages yet for this one. However, you can see that just using a blank page opens up all kinds of possibilities. Not to mention, your Mac is filled with imagery that you could use to make this thing look REALLY cool ( see here if you have time to wait ).
I also have what I'm going to coin, PNG PAKs. I've written tons of scripts to generate hundreds of supporting images - things like the nice picture frames, picture backdrops, text backdrops, shapes, arrows, buttons... you'll see some of these on the OSX demo pages. The ones on the demo pages are in-lays because they're supposed to look sunken, or cut-out of the brushed metal. The white ones play tricks with my eyes. I can create them in any color so you're not stuck with hi-fi or white.
Please post feedback and I'll wrap this one up for distribution when we're done.

Hey GREAT idea! I'm deep in AppleScript at the moment so if I forget to get this updated, yell at me later.
Also, I cannot publish at the moment - it just throws errors left and right. This is due to the fact that I had to pull a fast one on iWeb by removing the domain.sites folder WHILE iWeb was open because I could not get it to update the images. I figured if I yanked out the repository, that it would have to write everything back in ha ha, but it's protesting left and right about it. At least the images on my site are fixed! I just can't republish now.

  • How do I make a metal effect in illustrator?

Hello I did a logo for a client and it was built in illustrator. I took it to photoshop and put a metal silver effect on it that looked great but I need to do it in illustrator because the client decided they want to use the metal look 100% of the time.
Im not GREAT at illustrator yet... I can get by... so any advice or a link to a great tutorial would be very helpful!
    Thank you so much!!

Well done Scott very clear tutorial, excellent!
I know you are or were located in or near Seattle, where you raised there as well?
I am just curious about a very subtle aspect of your speech pattern very that is very engaging!

  • Why I can't see my Brush Tool effects on my layer mask until I click on the Photoshop window one more time

I really donut why my Photoshop works like I said on title.
I cannot see see the Brush effects on my layer mask nor in my history panel until I click on somewhere else in Photoshop.
This problem really slow down my workflow.
Does any one know the reason and the solution of my problem here? Please let me know, thanks a lot.

Update your graphics driver/ turn off GPU usage in the performance prefs. You have an issue with hardware-based transparency handling most likely. Otherwise you could have an issue with your input device, but since you have not provided any system info, we can't really know anything.

  • PSE9, Mac OS X, Smart brush and Effects not working

I have PSE6 for Mac OS X, and I have d/l the trial version of PSE9, to see if it's worth the upgrade. In PSE9 when I bring up the Smart Brush tool, there are no presets or options, just an empty box, and there is a message saying I can't use the tool because I haven't selected any options. I have tried resetting the tool, and all tools, but those actions don't help. In addition, the Effects box is empty. Anyone know how to access the options, or is this a bug with the Mac version?
I note that both these issues have been brought up before in this forum, but so far no-one has provided any answers.
     Richard

    Hi Richard
The tool should work without Elements+ but some users have experienced problems with missing functions and drop down menu on the options bar both on Windows and Mac.
I’m sorry a fresh install does not appear to work as it has cured some peoples problems.
I know it’s no consolation but the tool is not that smart. It simply adds whistles and bells to the quick selection tool by automating adjustment layers/blending modes. It’s then possible to make further tweaks to the adjustment layer. PSE6 is capable of doing the same.
I hardly ever use the smart brush tool personally, but the Layer Mask and Content Aware healing brush was sufficient for me to buy PSE9.

  • Setting the Brushed Metal look and feel for macs using Java.

    Hello,
I am relatively new to Java and I am new to Mac-specific java stuff. Anyways, when I try to set the look and feel of my classes to the "apple.awt.brushMetalLook" look and feel, I am unable to. It works if I have System.setProperty("apple.awt.brushMetalLook", "true"); written before I create any swing component. This would be fine, except that means that it is impossible to extend any swing component, such as JFrame or JApplet. Is there a way around this?
    Thanks!

  • I want to achieve this effect

I am an inexperienced Motion user just beginning to explore its possibilities (I'm using Motion 4).  I'm trying to create some title effects that closely match the trailer to the movie "Enchanted".  See link here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uW6dNiOIOhA.   At about 9 seconds and 14 seconds into the trailer, you see a flash effect and some wording.  I'd like to know how you can (or if you can) achieve that same flash effect in Motion.  Also, I would like to create lettering that is just as polished as what's in this trailer.   Again, I'm just getting started, but was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction.  thanks.

Pointing you in the "right" direction is about as good as you can get. This is not a beginner's project, and if you can work through it, you will not be a beginner anymore! (Because you've got to "peel through" a "bunch of stuff" to get this done.) (Also, this is not even an exact duplicate of the effect, only an approximation. To get the exact effect will take a lot more work... and ingenuity.)
    For the underline:
Draw a line shape — about the width of the canvas (you'll need the "overhang")
The Brush Type must be Airbrush [Brush Color: white]. [You'll want to adjust the spacing downwards to around 15% or so.]
The taper of the line is determined by "Width Over Stroke" (in the Stroke pane of the shape's inspector -- you can add points to the line by double clicking on the line [turn down the disclosure triangle] and you can adjust it's position settings with the parameter controls underneath the graph [the "Width Over Stroke" and "Stroke Length" parameters].)
For the example below, I have the stroke width set at 3 (from the Style > Outline pane) and the 50% (Stroke Length) location of the Width Over Stroke set for 600% -- and either end set for 0% (that's why you'll need the "overhang"). I have the Brush Opacity set for 7.2% and I used a Circle shape (scaled and stretched to fit within the line below it to create a "bright spot" — however, there is also an Opacity over Stroke parameter you could manipulate instead [not as easy to pull off; but probably better end result when you figure it all out].) In the Properties for the Circle overlay, set the Blend Mode to Add; and add Shape>Style>Fill>Feather of about 50.
[There's an easy onscreen way to manipulate the Width Over Stroke of a line... a little beyond the scope of this topic though... check the manual.]
The Line and the Circle should be in the same Group. To the Line, add an Outer Glow and Aura (Glow filters group.) You can use the Outer Glow colors to manipulate the glow effect coloration (it's a little too blue in the snapshot above). To the Group, add a Dazzle filter (also a "glow" filter). You're going to have to try to adjust these yourself as the settings will depend *greatly* on the "physical" properties of the line you have created.
For the text "brushed metal" effect: this is just a matter of creating a Gradient Fill:
You can position and add color "patches" by clicking on the color line portion of the gradient control (the top line is the Opacity, the middle section/line is the gradient's appearance, and the bottom section are the color "stops" that you create and position to control the gradient design.) You can set the color for the stop by right-clicking on the patch and selecting from the popup picker. Adjust the color stops (horizontal position) to line up the effect you want on the text (it updates in real time so you can watch it right on the text).
The Text font is Goudy Old Style (it's available in Motion 5 as part of the FCPX collection) with All Caps turned on (cap size: 80%).
For a little extra "punch" on the text, add a Dazzle filter and set the brightness to about 51% and adjust the other parameters to taste.
If you had Motion 5.0.5 or later, you could download this demo project to look at the parameter settings I used: http://sight-creations.com/fxexchange/enchanted_underline_demo.zip .  This will NOT open in Motion 4 or earlier versions of Motion 5.  (I have an extra Dazzle filter on the Line which can be turned on or off depending on if it would be "useful" or not, for those who do download it.)
PS: Once you have created the Line effect you like, Clone it and use clones for resizing (scaling) and reusing for an animated title. [To create a clone: select the entire group the line effect is created within and type the K key. Any changes you make to the original artwork will be reflected in all the clones you create, but the individual clones can be transformed by position, scaling and rotation without affecting any of the other "copies"/clones. ]
Hope that gives you enough info to get started on it. Hope I *covered* everything!
Good Luck!  (Get Motion 5 -- it's worth it. But keep Motion 4... just b'cause... )

  • No blending options in layers.

I recently upped my opinion of Illustrator and was really impressed with how I could change the appearance in the layers panel.
Now unable to find it. Using a mac and CS5.5 when selecting drop down button it is not there any more. Layer options only gives silly basic options like the name of the layer etc. I just don't know what's happened.
Created a brushed metal effect and unable to save as graphic style.
Anyone know what to do with this? This layers blending options was excellent and I can't really use much of the programme without it.

    Hi
With respect to Monika and Wade - who are both right, by the way - I still think that what you have seen and describe as the Layers Panel, is in fact the Appearance Panel.
The Appearance Panel does allow you to access the Transparency Panel from within it and you can apply transparency effects (blending modes) to specific attributes or to an entire object. Learning how to use it can really help streamline your work in Illustrator, so please do give it a go!
I've crudely recreated the graphic from your movie (apologies in advance - it really is crude).
The appearance - which will work as a graphic style - looks like this in the panel, and it's easy to confuse this with the Layers Panel at first glance.
The best bet though is for you to analyse the file, and it's available here: http://www.filedropper.com/forumsappearance
I hope that helps, and encourages you to explore a bit deeper into Illustrator.

  • Chrome or reflective finish... how ?

    Hi,
I have what can best be described as many light grey sausages sitting side by side, I want them to represent sausages made of aluminium,
Is there a quick way of getting them chromed up ?
I have used bevel and emboss to get the original light grey flat sausage shapes looking like 3D sausages, needing to have alternate sausages on alternate layers else the bevel/emboss does odd things to their abutting edges...... but the light grey is not giving me that reflectance I need.
    Envirographics

Noel, thanks...I experimented with those settings and it certainly was better than dead light grey. Its when one wants to move say a highlight or expand and whiten it more that it gets frustrating as to just what to tweak in the settings, the graph thingy was yielding three fine stripes, I simplified the peaks and got nothing well defined, one has to fiddle and sometimes you get near then start to lose it again !
What did you use for the brushed metal effect on the flat 2D shapes ?
I have my 'sausages' abutting and at 45 degrees, but I also have some angled differently and I am going to have to apply the effect separately as they look 'muddled'. Wishful thinking but if only there was a way of the filter to identify orientation of artwork to give the correct reflection !
I added a light blue colouring using the colour overlay tick option in bevel/emboss as I reckoned I should see some sky either side of my harsh white highlight streak but it made the highlight streak blue, try as I might I couldnt get the blue either side of the highlight streak and high up  with that highlight streak as white. I wanted it reflecting the colour of the base in the lower slopes of the sausage as would happen but also couldnt get it to do so.
If there was a way of choosing an upper reflection colour, a lower reflection colour and a highlight width that would do me, usually/traditionally for chrome airbrush artwork these would be blue, brown/green.
It certainly is an improvement on flat grey though !
JJMack, thanks for the advice, I think that artwork shown would benefit if the reflections followed the shape as would reflections on something of 3D body, has it that abilty ? the lettering looks like flat shet with mild surface twisting. I shall explore the suggestion further.

  • Adjustment Brush in Lightroom 5 has a different sized effect smaller than the brush size

    Hi,
When using Lightroom 5 Adjustment brush, the effect is only in the inner half of the brush size circle. In other words, if you select a 1 inch brush to darken, only about the center 1/2 inch is being darkened. I'm 100 percent sure the brush has no feathering, and all the settings are fine. An expert told me to try to get rid of preferences, and try it, and it still does the same thing. Now, I just updated to LR 5.7 hoping maybe it will fix it, to no avail. The LR on my laptop behaves perfectly fine.
Attached is a screen shot and a phone shot (excuse the moire, I had to use a phone to show the brush size properly) to show settings and the effect I'm talking about, so it's perfectly clear.
I have been putting up with this for months, but it's driving me crazy. Also, it occurred to me that all adjustments I make might 'change' later when I fix it, and it might show up unknown to me when I export the files later. And this would waste hundreds of hours of work if something resets somehow.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?
Thanks in advance for all replies!
    Stu

This problem is caused by changing the cursor size in the ACCESSIBILITY settings in your OS.  Here is a screen shot from the Mac but Windows has similar settings.  I reported this in Lightroom 2 or 3 and it is STILL not fixed. (Adobe's bug fixing rate to me is pretty dismal)   If you change your system cursor to anything except "Normal" you will get this behavior as Lightroom doesn't account for the system preferences.  I would like to make my cursor bigger but this prevents it.

  • PSE8 - having problems applying effects via Smart Brush Tool - PLEASE HELP

So this problem has started and it's driving me a little nuts.  It doesn't happen on every image. And it seems to only happen when i use the smart brush tool to brush on effects. Sometime when I use the tools and start selecting my area the select freaks out and just goes all over when all i've done it clicked the cursor on a little area. Sometimes it doesn't. Weird.
BUT also, when I am able to select whatever and then i go to "refine edges" to smooth things out it flips out again.  It adds random lines and boxes of color and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong! It's driving me crazy!
I've already "reset the tool", upped my RAM, and I've uninstalled/reinstalled the program.  None of these has stopped the problem.
These images are examples of what the "refine edge" button does when it decides to have a mind of it's own.  For both pictures I attempted to add the "cloud contrast" effect to the greenery and background.
(In the top picture there are lines and boxes of colors inthe dad's coat. As well as distinct lines where the effect ends when it should have blended.)

Next time you see that happen try Select>Deselect, choose the
paint brush tool and paint on the layer mask with either black or white
    on the problem areas.
Do the artifacts go away when painting on the layer mask?

  • Adjustment Brush - Effect - Lighten - oops!

I was in the Adjustment Brush settings > Effect > Lighten (forget the other word) and somehow... deleted the Lighten Preset
How do I restore this delete boo-boo?
    Thanking -you

    Thank-you for the reply Hal,
Yes, I seemed to get a dialog box asking me if I wanted to delete this "Preset" (Dodge) and of course I dd not understand it was referring to Dodge as a Preset or I would not have deleted it...
So - perhaps what we are looking for is a way to reinstate the "presets" for the Adjustment Brush "Effects" dropdown menu preset options...
    thank-you ~

  • New to After Effects - need help with text manipulation!

Hi all, I'm new to AE and this forum and I'm looking for some advice. I've been asked by the boss at work to create a short video clip, around 10-15 seconds, where text is displayed on the screen (3 words), after the few seconds, I want a 'forging' noise to happen and the final word in the text to be changed to another word and have a metallic effect applied, similar to the effect in this tutorial:
Create Hot Metallic Text in After Effects - After Effects - macProVideo.com Hub
Will this be difficult to do and do you guys think a complete beginner like myself can do it? I've got a lot of experience with the likes of PS, so I'm not too shy with Adobe software.
    Thanks,

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it. So will it be difficult to have one word of text come onto the screen and overlay on top of the existing text, as if it's crashing over it? Any ideas on the steps I would use to do this? Thanks
As you begin your career of using AE, you will change your vocabulary. Overlay will be replaced with spatial references like in front or behind.
Designing text with surface styles like chrome or metal is not difficult. You can even import them from Photoshop if you have some PS chops or friends who can do it quickly.
TEXT ONE can be easily replaced with TEXT TWO in any of dozens of different ways but to drop TWO in front of ONE is easy, you're just setting position keyframes. The finesse of animation, though, lies in the illusion of motion, exaggeration, overshooting and recoil. Your TWO could fall and squish and rebound and bounce or it could raise a dust cloud as it hits or it could make the camera wiggle. These are the things that separate simple key framing from animation and motion graphics.

  • I am having problem with using the Basic brush definition

I am having problem with using the Basic brush definition. When I try to click on it will not allow me to use it and will automatically use the 5 pt. oval brush definition. The only way I can use the basic brush is after I have already drawn something and then I have to click on the stroke and then press basic. This is incredibly annoying and if anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it. (I have Adobe CS6)

for whatever reason, the basic 'brush' you see in the brushes palette effectively means removing any brush from a path. to draw with the brush tool you need a brush defined. in your case the last one selected being the 5 pt oval one.
