Brushes in CS4 producing banding instead of smooth feather

Hi everyone,
Every time I use the brush tool in Photoshop CS4, the feather effect on the brush produces this horrible banding instead of a smooth feathering effect. Also when I click once with the brush tool and then shift click on another spot to create a straight line between the two points, the line produced is kind of bumpy - not the straight line CS3 used to produced.
I have no idea why this is happening and wondered if someone else has experience this and has a solution?
I'm using Mac OS 10.5.5.

To fix the bumpiness, open the Brushes palette, and click on Brush Tip Shape. Lower the spacing to a smaller percentage.
As for the banding, it could be a monitor calibration issue, or possibly a corrupt preferences file. If you click on the Brush graphic in the options bar, click on the small triangle to bring down the drop-down menu, you can find a "reset tool" option that may help. Failing that, try resetting all photoshop preferences (instructions in link below)

If you still have problems after that, then it's likely a monitor problem. Perhaps you could take a screenshot and upload it to pixentral.com, copy the "html" portion and paste it into a message here.

Look under Brush Tip Shape and look at the spacing settings or that spacing is not unchecked. (the default spacing is usually 25%)
For tapered strokes set the Size Jitter under Shape Dynamics to Pen Pressure, then the size varies depending on how hard you press the pen on the tablet.

Mac Pro connects to the G network on my dual-band instead of N

Hi. My Mac Pro keeps connecting to the G network on my dual-band instead of N. I can confirm the network/router are fine because my Mini connects to the N network fine, on the correct channel and at 270 Mbit/s.
I'm using a NETGEAR RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N Router. It is capable of simultaneous N and G networks as well as 2.4Ghz+5Ghz.
I've tried every channel and combo. Very occasionally the Mac Pro will register the N network 270 Mbit/s but will drop back to 54 Mbit/s.
More evidence, AP Grapher reports that it is using the G channel (eg 9) instead of the N channel (eg 43).
I also tried a Netgear DGN 2.4Ghz wireless-n router with the same result. That router only runs N, and only at 2.4Ghz, but Network utility reported that it was usually connected at 54 Mbit/s instead of 130 Mbit/s.
Combined with the fact that the Mac Mini works fine suggests to me that my network card is faulty.
Any suggestions before I lug this big beast back to the store for a new card?

I believe I've solved the first problem. The router gave both networks the same SSID by default. I have now set them to
myname-n
myname-g
I can now choose either network and the link speed is reported as 270 Mbit/s or 54 Mbit/s respectively.
However, I can still only achieve peak transfer speeds of 2.8MB/sec and AP Grapher reports 41/270 Mbit/sec unless I switch to 2.4Ghz only, in which case I can achieve 52/130 and 4.3MB/sec, well below 270 Mbit/s or even 130.

Go to System Preferences > Universal Access and down in the Display: section make sure that the Enhance contrast: slider is all the way to left to Normal, or more to the right for less Contrast.
Universal Access> may be Accessibility in 10.8.x

Brush display CS4

Hi,
I downloaded the CS5 Extended trial today and when I select the brush, I cannot get the circle icon to see when adjusting the brush size using the left and right brackets. I only get the brush icon to display on the page. Is there a setting to get the brush to display a circle instead of a brush?

Make 32 bit Photoshop CS4 the default instead of 64 bit?

It was a bit of a surprise to find that none of my 32-bit plugins would work with Photoshop CS4 x64. Most seem to work fine in the 32-bit version of PS though. Is there a way to make the 32-bit version launch by default from Bridge or when opening a PSD file instead of the 64-bit version?

I encountered this issue today as well when I installed Photoshop CS5, and discovered that my usual plugins do not work properly.
They did work properly while running in 32 bit mode.
Windows 7's extension definition sucks, that's why I rather work with the registry.
So after a bit tweaking, I think I finally cracked it.
The "Final Product" (if you will ) is two reg files for toggling 32 and 64 bit modes.
A word of caution: This is what worked on MY machine (Windows 7 64 Bit) and I cannot gurrantee it would work on other computers, nor do I take responsibility for any damage that my occur. We are playing with the Registry here, so BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL.
These codes assume Photoshop is installed in the default location. If you've altered it, make sure to modify the files accordingly first.
Before attempting to use I recommend to create a restore point, just in case something may go wrong.
Here we go:
To switch to 32 bit mode, open a blank notepad page, paste the below code and save it as "fix.reg" (NOT TXT). After saving, activate it and you're good to go.

You've accidentally selected dissolve instead of Normal in your brush settings on your tool bar?
Or if it's spaces then your spacing been altered in your brush tip shape options on your brush pallet.

Brush in CS4 defaults to crosshairs

Even though I change the brush in the cursor preferences to the 'Normal Brush Tip', it defaults back to the 'Precise' brush tip after I've used any other tool. Any suggestions?

After getting the .1 patch I am still experiences brush lag in CS4 with OpenGL turned on. Its not as bad but bad enough that I have to ask for help.
Rotation tool used to be really laggy before the patch but has no issues now.. it rotates with zero lag.
The brush lag still exist. Sometimes it better then others. It seems that the whole program gets slow when its lagging. Using curves even becomes a chore.
When OpenGL is turned back off and I restart PS everything is perfect again.
I have been leaving OpenGL off unless I really needed the rotate tool (and i use that tool quite often)...
I recently decided to upgrade to the Intuos4 and the rotate wheel on it begs to be used for Rotation tool.
Whats the latest workarounds or fixes to the lag problem with OpenGL?

I have 576GB available on 3 scratch disks and I am letting PS use 1197MB RAM for memory usage, which is 71% of the available RAM.
But the performance is still slow. I use PS for drawing with a Wacom tablet, and I am getting a lot of lag when I draw.
I don't know how to set the virtual memory to a set amount, like you say?

CS4: rubber-band option missing using pen tool

I'm missing the rubber band option using the pen tool. I often used that feature in earlier versions. But CS4 Extended seems to not have it anymore. Help tells me it should be in the options palette once you activate the pen tool. I don't have it, though. How can I access that option? Thanx.

Streaky healing brush in CS4

I like CS4 and have very few problems with it. But one curious behaviour is that from time to time clicking to create a healing area using the Healing Brush creates a diagonal streak from upper left to lower right as if someone had held down the healing brush (at the beginning of the streak) and pulled the brush diagonally to create the diagonal streak. This happens when the healing area clicked is nowhere near the start of the diagonal streak. Undoing and re-healing a few times usually gets it done ok but it is odd.

Constrained strokes? You know, when you accidentally hold down Shift...

Cannot use brackets [ and ] to alter the brush size because of swedish keyboard.
Thought of remapping the function to other tangents but cannot find an entry for that
in Edit>Keyboard shortcuts, is there one and where in that case?

I have the same little problem with a French keyboard.
Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts > Tools Scroll down to brushes, click on the bracket symbol - then delete and enter the key that you wish to use.
I use the ; and the : (Semi-colon and the colon.)

Deserializer producing nulls instead of objects

I'm using JAX RPC RI and generating my client code using the java service code, not the wsdl. In one of my test calls, I'm trying to return a custom object. One of the members of that object is an ArrayList of another type of custom object. Once the object is deserialized, the ArrayList is empty. I've also tried replacing the ArrayList with a regular array, and in that case I end up with an array of the correct length, but with all the elements null. I've snooped on the SOAP traffic (using a cool tool: http://capescience.capeclear.com/articles/using_nettool/) and the XML being returned from the service looks correct. The object looks thusly:

Both classes follow all the rules of JavaBeans. Also, I can correctly pass ComplexB objects. It's only when they're inside an ArrayList inside ComplexA that they get lost. I've looked at the code generated by wscompile and it looks OK. I really wish they would release the JAX RPC source. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to boil this problem down to a simple code example. Most things work, just this one problem does not.
One other thing: Running this through the debugger, I can see that the ComplexBs get constructed during deserialization, so something is breaking down when they are supposed to be added to a new ArrayList.

OK, I figured out what was going wrong. Part of it was the way I was testing the deserialization. Part of it was how deserialization is done.
I had assumed that when the deserializer called my setFoo( ArrayList ) method, that the List would already be populated, so I was printing the size of the list to stdout from inside setFoo and if it was 0, I was assuming it had failed. The trouble is that the deserializer does the following instead:
ArrayList newFoo = new ArrayList();
newComplexA.setFoo( newFoo );
newFoo.add( ...first item in list... );
newFoo.add( ...second item in list... );
In other words, it populates the array after it passes it to you. That's OK as long as you are saving a reference to that array. But I was using the array as a convenient way to pass the contents of my object and my setter was reading the array and populating an internal variable based on that. So when the deserializer post-populated the array, I missed out on those changes.
