BSOD, freezes etc.

Hey. I am pretty desperate right now, with only three days to a big exam. And that's why I'm making this
post.
I bought this laptop in dec. 2013. Model is Lenovo Ideapad Y410P.
Specs:
Windows 8.1 64-bit
4th Generation Intel Core i7-4700MQ Processor (2.40GHz 1600MHz 6MB)
8.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600 MHz
NVIDIA GeForce GT755M GDDR5 2GB
1TB 5400 RPM+24GB SSD
Intel® Wireless-N 7260 (802.11bgn)
After a while, completely out of the blue, i get a BSOD. I try pretty much everything to get it booting, and
eventually it boots when i enter boot menu and boot from windows startup manager. By this point, i had already tried reinstalling windows.
Now that it's booted, it keeps showing "no bootable drive found" when I start the laptop. So the
only way to get it working is repeating what i described above - every time. It also freezes pretty much every 10 minutes, and is frozen for the next 5-10 mins. Often, explorer.exe and other windows apps like taskmanager, device manager etc. will freeze, while
chrome usually works. The weird thing though is that web pages don't load. I can open a tab, enter a web address, and the loading wheel starts spinning, but nothing happens. Also, I had an installer open during one freeze, and the green bar was frozen, but
the install was complete when it unfroze, so it was working on that during the freeze.
I also have an unknown device in device manager, and found it to be this one: pcidatabase <dot>
com/vendor_details.php?id=1314
Googling for drivers renders
no results, but I am currently installing all avaliable drivers from lenovos homepage.
BIOS version is according to lenovo not possible to upgrade, and is always latest version. (Dont know how that
happens)
Before reinstalling, I took out the HDD, and copied all files to a stick. I scanned the drive, and its health
is excellent. I have a hybrid drive, with two partitions. OS is on the HDD, so is startup.
Event viewer shows two critical events, logged in at the exact time when one of the freezes ended. Event is
Event 10110, DriverFrameworks-UserMode.
Please let me know if there is more information I should include, and I would really appreciate any help!
EDIT: Adding some more from event viewer.

I suspect that the the drive (maybe partitioning) is at fault. I have tried to open disk management, but it's stuck at waiting for virtual disk service. The vds is not working as it should either, and after trying to stop it, it's stuck
in stopping. taskkill /f command says it's not running, while sc start vds say's there's already an instance of it running. sc queryeq vds command says it's stopping. Trying solutions from here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/8b5d2c5b-c212-4e3f-96e3-91e668d3b178/unable-to-connect-to-virtual-disk-service?forum=windowsserver2008r2management

Hi,
Apologize for the late reply.
How is the situation by now?
Regarding BSOD issue, we need at least two dump files to narrow down the cause.
And we'd better make a contact with the manufacturer to have an examination of the hardware health, just in case.

  • Problem with BSOD/Freezing probably related to Nvidia driver on Touchsmart IQ810

I have an HP Touchsmart IQ810, now a little elderly but otherwise going strong.
For the last couple of years now I've had a problem with occasional/frequent BSODs, one or two a week. Using crash  dump analyser WhoCrashed this is almost certainly related to the driver for onboard Nvidia 9600GM video chip. The usual advice is to make sure you have the latest driver, but I've tried more recent drivers and they seem to make the problem worse - rather than BSODs, I get screen freezes at least once a day, so I've gone back to the old driver version.
I've run the hardware diagnostic tools and found no problems, I've even tried using MSI Afterburner to turn down the clock speed of the card to prevent overheating, but this makes no difference. BSODs/freezes sometimes occur not long after booting, so surely it can't be overheating.
I've pretty much had to put up with this but I would like it fixed. Any suggestions?

NVIDIA and RADEON Drivers, depending oin what they are doing can really point you in the right spot. If you are still having issues after fully removing and reinstalling the drivers then you are looking towards a Hardware issue. I would check the contact points on your motherboard and other hardware, this is looking more like an issue with your motherboard.
The biggest problems for example when it comes to computers with RADEON cards, because they are big like the NIVIDA cards; just moving your computer or bumping it can cause damage to your componets within your computer and cause issue like this. RADEONS cards are known to have screen tearing and different colored lines through the screen, another thing I would check is to make sure the swtich or voltage on you video card isn't flipped. If the switch is flipped the wrong way, if you end up forcing your card to hard with the little voltage it has running through it your computer WILL BSOD and MSI Afterburner won't even matter, usually voltage is a setting that you don't want to mess with when it comes to using that program, that is why they make switches on these cards.
If it was a driver issue, your machine won't not be BSOD. The reason why I say that is because BSOD happens to help you prevent further damage to your hardware and if the correct settings are not how they should be, something as simple as skype can cause your machine to do thing's it shouldn't. I've had many issues myself that I've gone through, being in the IT field as well I've seen this to be a common issue due to changing configurations or changing what you do on your computer.
You may of not changed anything but just a simple virus can cause programs to do what they are not meant to do.
Boot into safemode and see if you run into this issue still after running it for a few hours, with safemode as you know. You boot with the processes that you need to run the core functions of your computer. If nothing happens it is because your computer has taken a chill pill. If everything is good and you boot into your main OS then you start having this issue again then you know it IS hardware and setting's related. Little thing's like this will make a hug difference.
The switch also is verd had to find but it will be very small and colored white, if you still have the box you video card came in they should have it pointed out where it is.
I hope this helps, if you have any questions please ask.

  • Is this version of Logic going to work for me?  (....bugs, freezes, etc.?)

    Everyone:
I am just getting into music composition but am fairly serious about it. I am setting my self up with the necessary components to start composing and recording (firebox, controller, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, guitar amp, bass amp, etc.)
I have a powerbook g4 and I am hoping that this machine will run this version of Logic well, it doesn't have a lot of other stuff on it and what is on there now can be taken off. I have heard that there are some bugs in the software and that some people have had some issues with freezing, etc. Is this logic package worth it... ? Is there a version of logic that would make more sense to get... ? Will my powerbook g4 be able to handle the application?
My main concern is that I buy a mixing application that is going to work, and work well... please help!!!
    Thanks,
    Ed

    Ed,
Looking at your equipment and what you're going to be recording I would recommend Logic Express 8 which has 85% of the features of Logic Studio (as far as the Logic application goes). It's lighter in weight (less disk space) and you lose nothing by purchasing LE because it's upgradeable to Logic Studio at no extra expense. I've advised several clients to purchase LE and not one of them have been disappointed, a well known music mag has called Logic Express, "Logic without the extra expense and extra cr@p".
What is the speed of your Powerbook and how much RAM do you have?
The most important thing besides having the minimum processor speed requirement is RAM.

i have updated to maverick but am getting constant safari page reloads, tab freezes, etc, any ideas, or any idea when apple aim to fix this please?

Try troubleshooting Safari extensions and third party plugins.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

  • Sound crackles, skipps, freezes etc on Windows 8 & Pavilion G6-1394

At first, sorry for my English. I'm polish
I have HP Pavilion G6-1394ea with Windows 8 Pro on board
Two days ago, I installed (again) Windows 8 Pro, after month since release. Till now I have problems with sound :/It crackles, skipps, freezes etc
As for me it's.. like a horror movie. Because I'm using my new laptop to gaming :/ watching movies and listening to the music.
On Windows 7 everything worked like a charm. I reinstalled all drivers, and everything was ok.
On Windows 8 upgrade or even clean install... it doesn't work :/
After upgrading drivers (IDT HD Audio Codec) to v.6.10.6425.0 downloaded from this forum as..
sp59154.exe Sound started working.. but I have problems with WMP.. It stucks while loading sound. I have to kill process to shut it down. Sometimes it plays song ( correctly) but it also stucks and again I have to kill process.
Maybe someone already solved this problem?

"The Hardware detected is not supported by this IDT software package. The nstall will be aborted."
Edit: Reinstall of sound drivers helped.. It seems so..
For me, remained a problem with WMP (occurs after upgrade or a clean install (refresh)) ...
When I play any file mp3 mp4 whatever .. program hangs. As it was the mp3 is keeps playing, and even displays the cover. However, I can not close the combinations by clicking the cross, alt f4 and change tracks or minimize :/
I can close it by and only by killing the proces
The problemexists in the IDT drivers (in three versions) and on any (standard Windows).
Music, VLC reproduce anything without a problem, I run the games and youtube and everything works fine.
I read that you can reset the WMP:
    by run and "msdt.exe-id WindowsMediaPlayerConfigurationDiagnostic"
but when I do the chiwle shows me the message:
Configuration settings may be incorrect :/
Deselecting the add / remove functions of the system won' helpt ...
    Anyone have any idea?

No changes made before the error. tried to reinstall windows, failed. got a new hard drive and tried to install windows, failed. memtest checks out ok. cannot get to the dump files due to not even getting past the BIOS. Restarted BIOS, failed.
The desktop freezes and usually an image displayed on the screen will repeat, for lack of a better discription. I searched the error code when it BSOD'd on me but it didn't say anything about a video card error. I'm at the end of my techical knowledge and need a hand for anyone who has the time to do so. Thanks for reading.

  • MSI Z87 G45 GAMING erratic BSOD/freeze @ 2300, stable @1600. Can't solve.

    Hi All,
I would welcome some advice. I am about 4 months into a new machine build:
    * MSI Z87 G45 GAMING motherboard
    * i7-4770K Haswell 3.5 GHz & aftermarket heatpipe cooler
    * 4 x 4Gb G.Skill SNIPER DDR3-2133 PC3-1700  (F3-17000CL11D-8GBSR)
    * GeForce GTX 650 Ti  w/ 2 Gb Video RAM
    * Samsung 840 Pro 256 Gb SSD
    * Thermaltake 700W Toughpower
    * Win 7 Pro 64-bit SP1
The system seems to run fine at the default 1600 MHz RAM speed, however if I implement either of the X.M.P. profiles (which kick the memory speed up to the RAM's advertised  speed of 2133 MHz), the system will occasionally (every 8 to 48 hours) freeze or BSOD.  The BSOD stop codes are inconsistent in number (0x00, 0x41, 0x1E, 0xC4) and driver.  When the system freezes, there is no consistent behavior.  I am not doing any other overclocking besides using the X.M.P. profile in the memory.
RAM timing on the 2133 X.M.P. profile is: 11-11-11-30.
I have updated the BIOS to 1.5, including the ME, and updated all drivers in the system.  All irrelevant hardware and drivers are disabled.  Also I have done the following:
    * MemTest+  5.01 for over 30 hours, all 4 sticks in.  No errors.
    * Intel BurnTest on 'Very High', 10 passes, no errors
    * Prime95 for over day with 90 C CPU temps constantly being hit.  No errors.
    * Unigine Valley Benchmark for 30 minutes; no issues
I increased V_DRAM from 1.60V (from the XMP profile) to 1.65V, and I also added  +0.10V offset to increase the CPU I/O ANALOG , CPU I/O DIGITAL  and SYSTEM AGENT voltages.  Didn't seem to help.  All other CPU voltages are default from [auto].
I rolled the memory speed back to the default 1600 MHz, and the system seems stable as a rock.
I don't really need to have the memory run at 2133 MHz, but it irks me that the system is not stable with the rated components, and I'm befuddled why the stress tests seem to pass just fine, then the system will randomly hang with arguably a far less demanding load than the stress tests.
Note that I have not yet:
    * reset the CMOS when changing to X.M.P.  Perhaps I should?
    * reseated the graphics card or CPU.  The latter will require R/R of the thermal grease, which I will do if needed, but it's a pain.  Since the system is stable at 1600 MHz, I assumed that all basic systems are working as they should.
    * Tried to work my way up in memory speed step by stem from 1600 to 2133 to see where things fall apart.
    * Tested the video memory
I suspect main system memory, despite the clean bill of health from MemTest, and based on many of the comments to others with similar problems from the veterans on this board.   I don't want to push the CPU voltages too much above the default/auto values, for fear of damage and reduced lifetime.
Also, the power supply is a nice unit from an older high-end gaming rig. It is rated at 700W.  The PS does probably have over 30,000 hours on it (24/7 use for 3-4 years), however.  Strange that it would work at 1600 MHz fine, and with only slightly more power load at 2133.  I suppose stranger things have happened.
I've read the suggestions to run only 2 sticks, rather than 4, but I can't justify dropping $140 on new memory (I don't really need the extra speed benefit, it's more curiosity and just not knowing at this point).
Anyway, perhaps more seasoned souls than I can share their thoughts.  The system is perfectly usable at 1600, but I'd really like to know where the lockups are stemming from.  Troubleshooting is maddening because of the inconsistency in the long times before failure and lack of repeatability to reproduce the issue.
Thanks in advance for your time.
    -Paul

Thank you both for the prompt replies.  I'm learning a lot.
Turns out I also found this from G.SKILL in going over reviews of the memory modules I have.  Another user had a similar configuration as mine and was having similar problems.  G.SKILL replied:
    Quote
We are sorry to hear you were unable to get two kits working in the same system. It is not guaranteed two kits can operate at the rated specifications since they were not pre-matched, tested, and guaranteed at factory. With multi-channel motherboards, perfectly matching memory is necessary to achieve high frequency. This is why we must offer high capacity 32GB, 64GB kits, otherwise we can just sell one module at a time and have you purchase as many as you need. Unfortunately, memory does not work that way. If you purchase a 16GB kit rated at DDR3-2133, you should have absolutely no issues. For any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly for assistance.
    Thank you
    GSKILL SUPPORT
Not knowing any better, I simply purchased two "kits" of 2x4 GB each and installed them.  Perhaps worse, if the modules were matched, I may well have mixed them up so the matched modules don't even sit in the same channels 1/3 or 2/4.  G.SKILL seems to have a pretty responsive board, so I'll ask them what they suggest.
Also in the end, I really just want a stable machine. This is a basically an office/engineering machine.  My initial thinking was that if the system was unstable at 2133 then there is something wrong with it that needs to be fixed.  It sounds instead like getting to 2133 is not guaranteed, and is much more of an art than simply throwing the modules in and powering up the system.
I'm perfectly happy at 1600 knowing the system is stable.  Indeed realizing now that 2133 requires overclocking, I may well have backed off to 1600 even if everything had worked just fine at 2300, just to trade extra stability for the (small) performance improvement that I would likely never notice anyway.
I'll put together a post for the G.SKILL forums, and if I get anything useful I'll post what I learn here for completeness.
Thanks again for the fast and informative replies.  It's much appreciated.
    Best,
    -Paul

  • IPhoto hanging, freezing etc...

I recently moved my rather large (is 6000 or 7000 photos a large library?) to a new external drive (a Drobo), and it seems to hang up alot. I'll click on a picture, and it'll freeze for a while, then work again. The Drobo has a fast connection, Firewire 800, so I don't think that should be the issue? Anyone know what might be causing this and how to deal with it/fixes etc? thanks!

The Drobo is very likely the issue. Many people report speed issues with iphoto and Aperture Libraries on these devices.
Move the Library back to your HD, or try it on a USB disk. (Make sure the disk is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) of course). Do the same issues occur?
And no, I don't think 6 or 7k is a large library. Iphoto is good for 250k images so you've some headroom yet.
    Regards
    TD

  • Massive Mavericks isuues - finder freeze etc.

After recently installing Mavericks new drive/clean and reinstall all software
I'm getting the worst performance imaginable AND terrible issues with Finder.
Dragging dropping files from window to window causes all mounted drives to disapear from the desktop.
When dragging files window to window extenl or local drive, nothing happens and the selected files freeze in the middle of the screen
(must relaunch finder) but issue still happens.
Very puzzling making it the worst OS in 6+ years.
Does anyone have any clue what i going on? any developers clue us in on possible seeded updates?
I've tried all sorts of trouble shoot in forums (deleting prefs etc) but simply getting worse.

  • Freezing, etc. since installing Tiger

Ever since I installed Tiger, my computer freezes up for a few seconds. Like i go to open something on the dock and it takes a few seconds to open. What i mean is the icon bounces up and then freezes there. Another example is minimizing windows. It will start to minimize and freeze for a few seconds. I also have trouble with clicking on the red x to close out a window. I can click on it and nothing happens until i reposition the window. Just weird little things like that have been happening and I can't figure out why. I've already repaired permissions numerous times and that has no affect. Any suggestions?
    Teri

I'm guessing you may have just had a bad install. It can happen from time to time. If it's not a problem I would suggest reinstalling. Because you say you have your files backed up, this shouldn't be too great an inconvenience. What I'd like you to do, however, is a re-prep of the hard drive as follows:
1 Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
After the formatting is completed quit DU to return to the installer, then proceed to re-install Tiger.
After installation check that everything is working properly before restoring anything from your backups. Be careful not restore any utilities that may be incompatible with Tiger such as third-party preference panes, contextual menu items, startupitems, login items, menubar items, etc. If you aren't sure if something is compatible check the software developer's site or versiontracker.com for any Tiger upgrades. Also be sure to upgrade any third-party applications such as Office X, any Adobe products, etc. If you have any third-party periipherals be sure they are compatible by checking them one by one. If any use proprietary drivers be sure the drivers are updated.
I don't know how much RAM you have installed in your computer, but if you don't have more than 256 MBs you will need to add more. Also be sure to maintain at least 6-8 GBs of free space on your hard drive.

  • N95 Problems: Restarts, freezes, etc

Hi, can anyone help me, i just got the Nokia N95 but it has a few problems:
    1) It just keeps randomly restarting. it's done it about 4 times today so far that i have noticed!
    2) It sometimes freezes when i take a photo.
    3) the application manager is very slugish after something is uninstalled (after the process bar has reached the end)
This is what i'v noticed so far, and i'v only been using it for about 24 hours.
Please can anyone help or can tech confirm if these are known issues which they are working on???
    thanks.
    LLAADD

Dont waste your time phoning Nokia my friend
you will waste 75p a minute and then they will simply say "sorry, we havent had a complaint like yours"
i had it today, and its now making me more determined to get a different manufacturers handset
just received my 2nd replacement Nokia N95 from the 02 network, and guess what? its exactly the same as the last one! wobbly slider, high pitch whining noise, horrid audio call quality, distorted, muffled...
i also wouldnt say that going through the menus is lighting fast
im extremely dissapointed with the N95
it seems Nokia have lead us all down the garden path again, we have been had "hook, line and sinker" with all of their advertising and hype etc etc
fancy releasing a handset with loads of problems... what a surprise!!!! havent heard that before, have you?
im now awaiting on my 3rd Handset this Friday
which means i have NO phone and a simcard just lying here doing nothing!
if i get the same thing happen again on this 3rd handset, im going to phone Watchdog from the BBC on Monday morning..
i can also bring a stack of people off of various other forums who would join me on this debate!Message Edited by waynester on 11-Apr-200706:26 PM

  • You view box freezing etc Warranty

Hello, I recently gave notice to cancel my bt accounts as I'm moving to plusnet, when my Youview box decides to start playing up: freezing, part recording, cutting out halfway through on demand programmes etc. I tried contacting bt technical help over the phone as I am still technically a bt customer, but they refused to help as I've given notice to cancel. I've had the box 13 months but should have a 2 year warranty owing to eu rules, so who can I contact for help? Bt technical help just said it's because I'm leaving the box won't work, which I know is not true as Youview themselves have confirmed that the box should be mine to keep as my minimum contract is up and the box should just operate as a retail one.
Can someone please help? Oh yes and I've tried the factory reset but to no avail.
    Thank you in advance.

Forget the "2 year EU warranty" - it doesn't exist.  What you do have is the Sale of Goods Act.  it's possible to claim on the SOGA for up to 6 years, though any court would consider how long a given product could reasonably be expected to last.
If something goes wrong within 6 months, you can return it for repair, refund or replacement.  It's up to the retailer to prove you broke it if they think you did.
After 6 months, it's up to you to prove that it was faulty at the time of sale.  This is usually done by getting an independent expert's report.
So in this case, if BT doesn't want to know, you'd have to get an independent report to say that it was made faulty.  At that point BT should repair/replace/refund (at their discretion), and refund the expert's fee.  That's assuming that they don't want to be awkward and force you to take them to court.

  • Multiple serial ports streaming - BSOD/freezes - Hardware or Software problem?

    Hello all,
I just joined the forums as I'm in dire need of some help with LV. I'm trying to hook up three lasers for an experiment. These are connected to my laptop via seperate RS232 cables with an adapter each to a COM port. I found an LV example that reads in one laser from the manufacturers site (something with .dll files and a C++ library). I'm a beginner with LV and I can't really say I have experience, especially not with custom libraries, so I just tried to make it work somehow. So what I did was basically copy it three times and reconnected some wires and changed the output format. I've added my program to this post; warning, you might get slightly sick by looking at it.
Anyway, my main problem is; it works, but only for a limited time. After some time the VI will crash or my laptop will BSOD. Now, since my VI isn't very professional and probably has a very bad structure I'm not sure whether this is a problem with the VI or with the RS232 adapters/USB hub. I read some things on faulty RS232 adapters that conflict, but I can also imagine my VI can't deal with three data streams correctly, so I'm not sure where this is coming from.
I was hoping that if any of you would take a glance at my VI, you could tell me whether it's my VI or not. I'd rather confirm this before I buy three new RS232 adapters.
P.S. I'm running this on LV 2011 and LV 8.2.1 (my laptop with 2011 only recognises 2 COM ports simultaenously and my other laptop with 8.2.1 all three, but my laptop with 2011 can handle the crashes better)
    Thanks!

As an off the wall suggestion, check the usb "power save settings" under "control Panelower Options:Edit Plan Settings:Advanced Settings:USB settings" You want the USB selective suspend setting to be Disabled. Another possible idagnostic tool might be to do  a    Power Efficiency Diagnostics Report  which we have found has occasionally pointed us to usb hanging issues.
Using the same type usb-serial adapters doesn't guarantee anything, but I have run into issues where a vendor's driver was implemented incorrectly. It ended up being a wrapper around the FTDI driver, and the wrapper dll wasn't correctly made multi-threaded safe. I browbeat the vendor (I was working at a LARGE corporation, with a prospective LARGE purchase of the devices) into telling me what calls their wrapper made. I then used the FTDI dll directly, not using the "simplified interface" of the vendor's dll. FTDI's dll was thread safe, no more random lockups/BSOD.
Good Luck, these are incredibly painful!

  • Recent Safari problems - YouTube crashing (Flash?), Gmail not loading, freezing, etc.

Two days after the new retina MBP was released, my Safari (latest version, running on the latest MBP with Lion) started acting up.
Crashing when trying to watch/load/pause a YouTube video — it simply cannot do it. I have an SSD drive, mind you...
Gmail often doesn't load, but stalls when the loading bar is 95% done.
Websites often freeze when I am browsing, scrolling, and so on.
Very frustrating! I have been forced to use Chrome for watching YouTube videos instead.

    Hi ..

For YouTube. Try troubleshooting the Flash plugin which is required for most YouTub content.
    Quit Safari.
Open System Preferences > Flash Player then select the Storage tab. Click: Delete All
Now uninstall the Flash plugin then reinstall new >  Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Very important to uninstall the currently installed Flash plugin first.
Relaunch Safari From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
    Now try a video.
BTW... if you have the ClickToFlash extension installed, that can prevent Flash based video from streaming. It can also be installed as a plugin in /Library/Internet-Plug-Ins.
And check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to:  Open in 32 bit mode  is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari.
As for Gmail. From your Safari menu bar to of your screen click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab. Click:  Remove All Website Data. Quit then relaunch Safari. Try accessing Gmail.
For sites freezing, try deleting the cache associated with Safari. Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:   ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
    Click Go
Move the Cache.db file to the Trash. Test Safari.

Firefox problems - second request, last one two weeks ago
System claims FF is running when Task Manager shows no such thing
FF can no longer load previous tabs with the This is Embarrassing screen and I have to click to restore
FF will never reload a second time except after a reboot, it can last hours or punk out in a half hour for no apparnet reason
Recently it has been refusing to answer clicks on any of the upper chooser buttons, including the tab row
Constant reinstalls of the latest 3.6.13 FF do nothing.
eBay refuses to enlarge item pictures though it will after clicking Explorer
FF has turned into a monster in the last few months and I at my wits end. I use eBay and the Net religiously. Is there anyone monitoring current FF problems, particularly those who engineered it? At present, this is not a program to be proud of.
