BSOD when installing Vista SP1 on replaced HDD, T61p

Hi all,
My hdd crashed last week, fortunatelly I was still able to backup most of data.
Yestarday I got new hdd, with preinstalled Vista Ultimate, but pretty old - from september 2008.
I started with refreshing drivers, which is now huge work comparing to use of TVSU (btw: Lenovo, please fix TVSU!!)
Then I did Windows Update, downloaded about 80 updates, 280MB. SP1 didn't show up though.
I took full SP1 and tried to install it, however after 3rd or 4th reboot it crashed with BSOD STOP error, ending with 07E.
There is no description of any kind, no names of drivers, etc.
This stop error seems to be quite generic and honestly I don't know where to start.
Any help appreciated.

There's a slightly easier way than slipstreaming.
The issue is that XP doesn't have driver support for the SATA AHCI controller on that system.  However, you can download that driver here:  http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70477
You'll need to extract that and put it in the root of a floppy (yeah, a floppy... looking for the A: drive is hardcoded in to the XP install).
When you boot to the XP CD, press F6 when prompted (it'll say "Press F6 to install third-party SCSI controller" or something similar along the bottom).
Windows will load some files and eventually bring you to a screen with a couple of options.  It'll tell you your current controller is "<none>" and allow you to press S to specify a driver.  Once you do, it'll scan the A drive and load up the entries from the txtsetup.oem file you extracted from the driver.
The selection you want doesn't show up by default.  There aren't any scroll bars, but you can scroll through the list using the arrow keys.  You want "Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller" which is the 7th from the bottom.
Select that, Windows will load it, the install will continue and you'll be golden.
If you don't want to bother with scrolling, you can open the txtsetup.oem file and find this line (near the top):
 [Defaults]
scsi = iaStor_ICH8MEICH9ME
Change that to:
 [Defaults]
scsi = iaAHCI_ICH9MEM
And the proper controller will be highlighted by default so you don't have to arrow through the list.
If all of that is too much of a pain, you can go in to the BIOS under Config->SATA and change AHCI to Compatibility and load Windows w/o the IMSM driver.  Once Windows is loaded, you can install the driver and enable AHCI mode using the install.cmd file in the PREPARE directory of the driver linked above.
Hope this helps.

  • 'Windows cannot install required files' error while installing Vista SP1

I'm installing Vista Client SP1 on my Macbook pro and getting the following error:
Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation.
Almost exactly as described in this KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930984/ except my error code is 0x80070017. I'm double-checked CRC on my dvd to ensure it's not corrupt. Also I've previously successfully installed Vista SP1 from the SAME DVD on a different Mac Leopard (desktop)
Any ideas? This is a new Macbook pro, just got it yesterday. Could be DVD drive issue?
    Thanks!

  • Bootcamp Question? Should I update bootcamp before installing Vista SP1

    Hi,
I am about to install Vista SP1 on iMac, Leopard 10.5.4.
About a month back, there was a bootcamp update that had been posted on support download website. The question is; Do I need to install the Update before installing Vista or is that needs to be done after the installation of Vista?
    Thanks for the help,

The update is consists only of new device drivers for Windows XP and Vista. There are different updates depending upon whether you install 32-bit XP, 32-bit Vista, or 64-bit Vista. So Windows must be installed first, the original drivers included on the Leopard DVD should be installed, then you can install the update in Windows.

    dear all
i tried every trick i found in several internet forums regarding problems to install Vista SP1 on a T61 with failure message 0x800F0826. No chance to install.
Can anybody advise how I can be successful ?
    Thx in advance

    Hi!
Could you tell us whether it's a clean install of Vista or are you running a Lenovo pre-load? Also, are all your drivers updated? From my research there are two major culprits that can prevent an upgrade to Vista SP1 (either stand-alone or via Windows Update):
    1) fingerprint reader driver
    2) X3100 Intel graphics driver
However, the error you mention is known to Microsoft but they offer little in terms of a solution for this issue. Here's their explanation:

  • BSOD when installing Windows XP

I have two R500 ThinkPads that came with Vista Home Basic sp1. I need to install Windows XP Pro sp2 on the laptops but I keep getting a BSOD when I boot from the XP installation cd.  The BSOD error is:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.
    Technical information:

  • BSOD when installing Windows XP on ThinkPad x220

    Hi,
I have just bought a ThinkPad x220 (4293-AA6) with no OS installed. I am trying to install Windows XP (32-bit), but have not yet been successful.
I have carefully followed section in the User Guide called "Installing Windows XP", but this has not worked for me. In summary, the procedure I followed was:
In BIOS, set "Serial ATA (SATA)" to "AHCI",
Set "UEFI/Legacy Boot" to "Both" or "Legacy Only" (makes no difference to my problem)
Boot from Win XP SP2 CD
Press F6 when prompted, put the Lenovo "Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver drivers" in floppy drive, and select "Intel MobileExpress Chipset SATA AHCI Controller". Drivers were extracted from this file: this file
    Continue the installation
The result is a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) just after the setup screen says "Setup is starting Windows", with the error message:
    "STOP: 0x0000007B (0xf78d2524,0xc0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)"
    Other things I have tried:
Followed the alternative procedure outlined in the User Guide, under "If you do not have a diskette drive..."
Updated the BIOS from 1.15 to 1.17
Ran memtest86+ (resulted in no errors)
Tried the "Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver" from the Intel website rather than the Lenovo website
Selected the "Intel 5 Series 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller" instead of the other one when installing the drivers
Tried using a WinXP SP3 CD instead of SP2
    Formatted the disk using diskpart
Installed Ubuntu 11.04 to the harddrive (successfully!!) then tried installing Windows XP again
But I always get the same BSOD.
I have also tried installing Windows 7 (64-bit), which also failed! It booted into the installation program, but then it stopped and said it couldn't find a driver for a CD/DVD drive. After installing the appropriate 64-bit Lenovo IRST driver and rebooting, this resulted in the following Blue Screen of Death: "STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x0000000000000003,..."
Is anyone able to help me with getting Windows (XP or even 7) installed? Any help or ideas would be much appreciated, and I'm happy to provide more information/tests if needed.
    Thanks in advance,
    Roy

  • "Not fully ACPI Compliant" error message in BIOS when installing Vista 64-bit

When I try to install Vista 64 Ultimate I get this message after the initial black and white loading bar screen: "cannot install because the BIOS in this sytem is not fully ACPI compliant"
    Board: 975X Platinum V.2 "20th Anniversary Edition"
Board Bios: 7.8 (tried to install 7.9 but failed (usb flash and msi online)
    CPU: Core 2 Duo E6400
    Memory: 2X2GB A-Data Dual Channel
Tried many solutions from other forums but didn't worked (disabling/enabling >> usb, parallel-game, acpi, apm) also tried with ps2 keyboard only., also with only 1 stick of ram....but nothing worked....
What the heck is going on?
I'm currently running XP SP3 perfectly, but I wanted to upgrade to Vista 64 and buy another 4gb of ram, etc.
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

    IT WORKED!!!
After the upgrade to the 7.9  BIOS, everything went smoothly.
    Thanks guys you rock!!!
NOTE: I've read so many posts here from members and mods recommending to NOT flash the BIOS unless is inminent...I guess is good advice, but on the MSI website, the only new feature they mention about the 7.9 update is: "Add USB storage bootable function"....but then again, the update fixed my problem (read first post). • KeyAgent and MacHAL didn't install when installing Vista x64

    Hi All,
I have seen a couple of sketchy posts about this, but nothing that really explains what's going on here.
I tried a clean install of Vista x64 last night on BootCamp, and I loaded the new Mac Pro BootCamp drivers than are available for download on the web (they are supposed to support x64 now).
I got two errors... KeyAgent and MacHAL wouldn't install. As some people have mentioned, the installation said I didn't have the correct permissions.
Anyway, the installation proceeded when I selected 'ignore' to these errors... and on the face of it, all seems well with my Vista installation.
However, question is, what do KeyAgent and MacHAL do...?? Do I need them...?? Is there a way I can get them installed...?? Etc..
    Many Thanks

Hi, Just hit the same problem with installing Vista Ultimate x64. KeyAgent & MacHAL failed to start, did the ignore and everything looked OK. Installed the Mac drivers, but no Bluetooth, Airport etc, plus the BootCamp control panel and system tray were missing.....
Removed the BootCamp partition completely and reinstalled this time with x32 version of Vista,
no problems at all, Mac drivers load and everything works. Hate having to corrupt my first Mac in 8 years, but need Windows for specific PC applications.
As a side note. I had to create a 50Gb partition, due to file sizes. Downloaded MacDrive7 from MediaFour, absolutely brilliant. Lets me see the Mac Partition and my Mac 750Gb Seagate backup from Windows. One small issue, when you load software that has both Mac & PC installs, if MacDrive is turned on you can't see the PC install. Workaround - disable MacDrive7, reboot, PC version installs OK and then reset MacDrive7.
    Cheers

    Hallo
I have tried every thing. Search the net. Got support from MS, but still. Cant install SP1 for Vista.
The installation goes fine, until the last step. On Step 3/3 it say 100% complete. But after a while it say, installation failed and that the system is restored.
I have tried installing the SP1 after a Vista clean boot with all not neede services turned off. No luck
I have upgrade every driver and BIOS with the latest from the Lenovo website.

  • Audigy LS W/ Alchemy Upgrade - Error after installing Vista Sp1

First off, yes I know it is a release candidate, and yes, I can uninstall it... but the error is there, and will of course be there when the final release is pushed out on updates unless it is fixed.... so here goes...
I installed Vista Sp RC yesterday. No issues that I identified immediately, everything seemed fine. Yet today when I tried to listen to podcasts, iTunes wouldn't play audio (other apps still play audio fine). I tracked this down to a sound driver issue, so I went to control panel to load the Sound controls, and lo, there was an error box that did appear:
    "Audio Enhancements Problem"
"Windows has detected that audio enhancements for the following device are causing problems:"
    "Speakers (SB Audigy LS)"
"Would you like to disable Driver Enhancements for this device? (Yes/No)"
I'm not sure what the side effect of disabling driver enhancements would be - it sounds like pretty much crippling the card, which will not accept as I did pay for the upgrade to support Alchemy in Vista for it. I'm also not sure if I tell it to disable the enhancements if I'll ever be able to turn them back on again without a reinstall - vista is that way with some of its hidden settings.
So - is there another way around this other than simply uninstalling SP (which hopefully will work), and most importantly, will there be an update to fix the problem before Sp final pushes?
    My system is as follows:
    AMD Opteron 70, 2gb PC4000 DDR
    320GB Seagate SATA Dri've
    SB Audigy LS
    ATI Radeon HD2600XT
    DFI Lanparty NF4 Ultra-D
    Windows Vista Home Premium
everything worked until today, and I'm assuming my install of SP RC was the trigger. I'm about to start a rollback, but that will of course take some time. I will post back here if the rollback does NOT fix the problem. I'm hoping it will, but still need a fix before SP final pushes.

http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Vista/Vista-SP-RTMs-and-Lies/ http://www.microsoft-watch.com/conte..._question.html Is it RTM or not Google it and see. Main issue with SP is drivers (not many). That's all I care to comment on.You could reinstall any drivers that are a problem.Didn't work for me.

  • Can't install Vista SP1 on new MBP

    Hey there,
I posted this in another category by mistake, apologies.
I have a mid-2009 MBP and recently updated to 10.6 (now 10.6.1). I unfortunately need to install Windows on my machine for grad school examination software and I didn't have a copy of XP, so I went and purchased a retail version of Vista Premium Home SP1. Using Boot Camp, I get almost all the way through the installation process until it tells me that it "could not configure one or more system components." I verified and repaired disk permissions via Disk Utility before I started, and did the install 3 times with partition sizes of 32, 25 and 15 with no luck. Any ideas? Suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I guess the problem is due to vista that needs a NTFS partition to be installed. Check in which way your bootcamp has being partitioned (I think FAT). In this case, to solve the problem is to format the partition in NTFS: in the vista installation process, when it is asked to choose where install windows, there should be a way to format and allow the process to complete regularly.

  • BSOD when installing Samsung 830SSD (258GB) on MSI-P55-GD85

Dear experts, a question from Belgium,
A few years ago a build a PC around a MSI P55-GD85 (i870) with 8GB Corsair RAM & as main boot disk a Western Digital Velociraptor WD3000HLFS (other hardware is probably not relevant for this topic).
OS: Win 7 Home Premium x64. Everything worked as expected - no problems experienced.
Now I have purchased a Samsung SSD830 (256GB) to replace the WD as the primary boot device, with the intention to link it to the 6Gb/s SATAIII connection for fast boot times & faster program starts.
Step 1: I first connected the SSD to a 3Gb/s SATAII concetor for the cloning with the WD. I also took care of the alignment (Diskpart) and other settings.
Step 2: After the cloning I change the primary boot device in the BIOS to the SSD & disconnected the WD-disk. SSD still connected to SATAII connector -> everything works fine, the PC boots without problem & I can access folders & run programs -> looks like success.
Step 3: I update the Trim function setting, deactivate defragmentation, deactivate indexing etc ...
Step 4: I installed the latest Marvell SataIII drivers (Ver: 1.0.0.1047-WHQL), downloaded from MSI site for my motherboard
Step 5: I updated the Bios to set the 6Gb/s line entry to AHCI (this I already did before the cloning process, but no drives were connected to SATAIII connectors, so I assume no impact).
Step 6: I connect the SSD to a 6Gb/s port (SATA7 or SATA8) and reboot the PC
Problem: during the booting process, just at the timing when the OS is loaded (and the Windows icon appears on screen) I get a BSOD.
What did I do wrong ? Did I forget any driver, settings, or was my procedure wrong ?
Thank you in advance for a reply.

Thank you all for the interesting feedback.
After the feedback that my original WD-disk might not have been set up under AHCI and in that case cloning is no option, I decided last Friday to do a full clean install of Win7 on the SSD. Also upgraded the BIOS to level 1.6 and installed the latest drivers. Everything went well, but it is really a time-consuming job (computers are fun if you don't mind waiting .
System now runs without problems on the 6GB/s port, with a read speed of 372GB/s (quite disappointing when you are expecting close to 500GB/s, but acceptable after everything I read in the mean time on the Marvell 88SE9128 chipset).
Now I read on a forum in the Netherlands that this Marvell chipset does not support TRIM and it is better to switch back to the 3GB/s Intel chipset.
    Is this correct ?
What are the best options in such case?
    1) Stay on the 6GB/s port and perform the TRIM command manually (if that is possible by the Samsung software)
    2) Switch back to a 3GB/s port on the Intel chipset that covers TRIM -> do I need to do another fresh install in this case, or can I just move the plug from the 6->3 GB/s port
    3) Other options ?

  • Error BSOD when installing SATA drive on 1 & 2 (RAID 0 on 3/4 AOK)

    Hi,
I have successfully installed Win XP Pro on 3 & 4, & wanted to install a Maxtor 120GB SATA drive on 1 or 2.  When I do this, & enable bios on 1 & 2, windows loads then prompts for a reboot due to the install of new hardware.  After posting & whilst Win is starting, it BSOD with IRQ_NOT_EQUAL_OR_LESS etc.  I shut down computer, remove SATA drive, alter settings back to before in Bios & select last successful settings & computer reboots AOK.  This happens on both SATA 1 & 2.
Is there a way of having the SATA storage disk on 1 or 2.  Is it best to hot install it with the O/S up, after having changed BIOS settings to enable SATA 1 & 2?

To answer my own question, while computer is turned off, (after taking anti-static precautions) plug power to sata drive.
Connect sata data cable to M/board, do not connect sata data cable to drive.
Enable sata 1 & 2 in bios, boot to windows.
    Drivers are installed for device.
Then carefully plug sata data cable into sata drive.
    Windows detects new hardware.
Enter Disk Management & partition/format to your hearts content.
Thanks to those who had a look at my post.  Hope this helps someone else.

  • BSOD when installing windows 7 drivers using bootcamp in macbook pro late 2013

I followed the bootcamp instructions and installed windows 7 in my macbook pro 13 inch late 2013. But when the bootcamp starts to install the required drivers, halfway through the computer goes to BSOD. And after restart windows shows many error messages of "validation error".
I have a student licensed windows 7 professional.

I had the same problem. I  was installing a Debug Build of Windows 7 on MacBook Pro 15" Late 2013 with a student license and it would die with BSOD while running BootCamp at the end of Windows installation. I solved the probelm by downloading a non-Debug version of Windows 7 Professional with Service Pack 1 and re-trying the installation from scratch. That is, I went back to OS X, launched BootCamp Assistant, erased the previous partition of Windows and re-created it again. After that, I installed a fresh copy of the right flavor of WIndows and it worked flawelessly.
