BT Broadband or BT Infinity

I am sorry if this question has been asked before. A brand new FTTC cabinet has been installed with power about 200M away from my home. It still awaits the OR team and the rfs date has slipped from 31 Dec to 31 Mar 12. On Saturday, I received a letter from BT offering me free broadband for 3 months etc. Currently, I am with an independent ISP. Simply, what is the contractual position if I accept the Broadband offer and I want to take up BT Infinity in a couple of months time?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Hi
If you decide to take up the broadband offer you will either have a 12/18 month contract, the change over to Infinity when it becomes available to you, will be as far as I am aware classed as an upgrade so the install and any extra equipment should be free, at least it was for me when I went from broadband to Infinity.
 Hope this information helps
Edit : like webby said you will start a new 12/18 month contract off upon upgrading.

  • Switch from BT Broadband to BT Infinity

    Hi,
We've just upgraded from BT Broadband to Infinity 1 at home but we're have a lot of problems with it!
    1) Wireless connection problem - When we upgrade we kept the original BT Hub 3 which has always worked fine, but since the openreach engineer came its been very problematic! We got told no settings needed changing but the Hub now won't let my Windows 7 laptop in all the time! If I'm in the same room as it I have about 1 in 9 chance of a connection, but in my bedroom above the Hub ( where I've never had problems before! ) I have zero chance!!! This is dispite at WiFi checker showing good sign!!
I know its not the laptop as it still connects to my works BT Hub fine! ( Writing this at work )
    2) I know its only been installed 5 days but I'd of expected the connection to be more stable by now, the speed fluxs from 0.06 - 32!!
    Any ideas people?

Problems like this can be resolved using Google you should be glad you have BT Infinity, I have been waiting 41 days just to get Infinity and nobody has responded to my help requests on my thread from BT Staff.

  • Sky LLU broadband to BT Infinity move going wrong

    Hi,
My parents place has been struggling along with 2mbit/sec Sky LLU broadband for ages. I saw that there was a decent deal going for the tv/broadband/phone so helped them order it. Booked the engineer for the 17th December.
They've now been told there is a delay with the order and they need a 'cease date' off Sky and the order may be delayed.
As far as I understand from LLU to BTwholesale FTTC does not require a MAC code or anything else. BT are in the driving seat and it is up to us to tell Sky we don't want to do anything.
Can someone see what has went wrong here? I'll be really annoyed if they miss that 17th date because I dobut there are any more appointments until after NY now, which will leave them without TV over Christmas (cancelled the TV to line up roughly with that date).

    Hi martinald,
    Thanks for your post.

  • Broadband talk on Infinity

    Hi Guys and Galls
My turn to ask rather than answer a question.
Just had my email saying I can now get Infinity however I still want to keep BB Talk as I use it for softphone on my laptop.
I know that smart talk is now available.
Has anyone successfully kept BB talk? I am aware that the facility is not available on the HH3 but I also have a VOIP ATA that I previously had programmed up with BBT

when you upgrade and get a HH3 it seems like there is an automatic setting which cancels BBtalk and you need to make sure that doesn't happen.  It happen to me when I renewed my contract last year because I had a HH3 and system automatically ceased BB talk.  first I knew was an email from Warren telling me it was cancelled.  Thankfully the mods got restored albeit with a different number

  • Migration from Sky Broadband to Infinity 2

    Hi,
Just wondered if someone can confirm is this correct.
I have called today to port from standard Sky Broadband to BT Infinity 2.
The operator advised me that I would need to port into the standard BT Total Broadband service first then the day after I would have to place another order for BT Infinity.
I would appreciate it if someone can confirm this is correct as its a bit long winded.
    Thanks

If you pay Sky for your line rental then yes, it seems that the line has to be taken over first then Infinity  ordered.
My line was taken over sometime  yesterday and a nice lady phoned at 8.30am this morning to book an engineer visit for next week.
My broadband is still active with the  old provider as i asked them to keep it live until I contact them, maybe this would happen anyway but I have read a few horror stories on here
Again, not how it happened for me - I had everything with Sky, phone line switched over on 3rd May, engineer called round 10 minutes later and set up Infinity

  • From normal broadband to infinity

Ok, So on Friday 7th i switched from bt broadband to bt infinity. Before the engineer left he logged onto his handheld using my wireless connection and showed me a film and how there was no buffering.I logged on my pc and speedtest.net gave me a test of 31mb.
I was advised in next 3 days this would be up and down until it settled at the estimated speed i was given at around 64mb.So off he trots and i go out. When i get back i discover bb had dropped out.It came back on again and when i did a test it was at 0.2-0.4mbps..After phoning up i was told by bt this was because line was settling in for 3 days.
I am pretty sure that in this period the speed should not be this low..it is at the point where it is useless.I tried explaining this but got nowhere. It is now Sunday and no better.

Download speedachieved during the test was - 18.19 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 16 Mbps-18.98 Mbps .
     Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 18.98 Mbps
Well not what they told me i would get if i switched to infinity, and not what i got after engineer left.
When i do test to see what my line is capable of it tells me a download speed of 62.8 mbps. When engineer left i was getting 32mbps.This was on wireless connection.I know i will loose some not being wired, but this result is pants compared to what i was told i would get and what i got in the first few hours of having infinity.
I have always used wireless and was getting 17mbps on old BT Total Broadband,so are they telling me by getting infinity i get a 2mb increase?
Great News! You can get superfast fibre optic BT Infinity
    62.7Mb*
    Download speed
    20Mb*
    Upload speed
This is the result of the BT Speedchecker and what made me go for infinity

  • Phone not working after infinity installation

I have just moved my phone and broadband from Sky to Bt and the engineer called this morning to complete the installation. I have 2 phone sockets. When I had broadband originally installed it was before the days of filters so it required a BT engineer visit. As my computer was upstairs the engineer 'back wired' the sockets (apologies if I have the terminology wrong) so the adsl faceplate was fitted to the upstairs wired extension. Today, the Openreach engineer was initially puzzled but said he would be able to install the Infinity faceplate on the upstairs extension as originally fitted. He checked the line was ok, checked the broadband connection and put the faceplate back on the 2 sockets. After he left I tried to make a call via the downstairs socket without success and I assumed that the phone line had not yet been changed back to BT. This afternoon I received an email from BT advising that my phone was now active but the downstairs socket will not work. I am able to make and receive calls on the upstairs extension. I have just spent 40 minutes on the phone to BT, explaining the problem to 4 different people. Each BT employee advised that it would cost £130 for an engineer to revisit my house to correct the fault that they had somehow caused! To say I'm frustrated is an understatement. Has anyone any suggestions how I can resolve the problem. All 4 BT employees did not really understand the problem. I would appreciate any help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You cannot use a phone connection for broadband when on Infinity. The only connection that can be used is that which comes from the home hub 3, which is near the Openreach modem.
You have to use wireless, run an Ethernet cable, or use Powerline adapters.
You phone should work if it is plugged into the botton socket of the new Infinity master socket.

  • When will I get Infinity

When I enter my postcode on BT Infinity it states my area is already on the list to get it, but I can't find any information to tell me when that will actually happen. When I click order Infinity it says it's not available to me. I'm only assuming it hasn't been installed yet, I don't actually know whether it has. I am very interested in upgrading my frankly awful current broadband connection for Infinity; i'd like to register my interest or just know when about it will be installed, because all it says is it's already down to get it, which isn't all that helpful. My postcode is LE9 6PU - any help appriciated thanks.

    you can check here http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search

  • Charged for broadband over usage but still below l...

Hi guys,i hope someone here can help because i'm getting nowhere with bt helplines. At the end of january this year i changed from bt total broadband 1 to infinity. My old broadband limit was 10gb but i usually went over by 2 or 3 gb which i was obviously charged for, no problem there. With my new infinity package my allowance was increased to 20gb per month which was plenty enough for me.however, mybt usage monitor is still showing me to be on the old 10gb package.
Despite several live chat sessions and phone calls(the last one 2 weeks ago informing me i had 40gb usage) i'm still being charged for going over my 10gb allowance.i've even sent them,as requested , a screen shot of my usage monitor!! Why on earth would i have to do that? My latest bill arrived this morning with charges added for over usage.
Can someone please advise me of how to sort this problem out. To make things worse i'm now going to the dentist!
    Thanks in advance,

  • Using BT Infinity for Skype

I upgraded from BT Broadband to BT Infinity as Skype video calls would always drop out on my laptop after a bit when on BT Broadband using the HomeHub2. Sometimes I had to restart my computer as the dropout would also knock out the internet too and restarting it seemed to be the only way to bring it back. I experienced the same problems both with a wired connection and a wireless connection to my laptop.
Unusually if I try making a Skype video call using Wi-Fi using my mobile phone, the video call never dropped out.
Despite upgrading to BT Infinity and using the HH5, I'm still experiencing dropouts with Skype or receiving poor video and/or audio with it again through either a wired or a wireless connection.
Could this therefore be a problem with my laptop or some settings or something?
If it could be laptop settings, could anyone advise me what settings I can change and how I can improve things?
Any software to install or update perhaps?
And why does my laptop seem to be more susceptible to dropouts than my phone for Skype?
    Can anyone advise please?
    Kind Regards and Thanks.

Somebody has obviously merged your posts and moved them to this board which is for general problems.
What make/model of laptop and what operating system do you have?
If you can stream other video it is unlikely to be the network card drivers but you can check in any event.
If you go to Start > Control Panel > Device Manager > Network Adaptors, click on each one in turn and go to the "Drivers" tab. Click Update driver to see if it will update.  You can then take a note of the card manufacturer and the model along with the driver version, then go to the manufacturer website and look in the support / downloads / drivers section to see if there is a more up to date version.
The problem is more likely a setting with Skype. Do you have the latest version of Skype installed. Is it a recent problem or has it always been poor? Do you connect by wireless or wired, if wireless have you tried it wired.? Does your laptop meet the minimum specs to use Skype. See link

  • Re: Upgrading from Broadband to Unlimited Broadban...

I just tried to upgrade from BT Infinity 20GB to BT Infinity Unlimited.
I took out an 18 month contract (6 months ago) which had £15 discount for 6 months and £2.50 discount for 18 months.
I tried telling the options agent that I should, according to their website, retain the £2.50 discount for the next 12 months.
After the agent finally found the web page I referred him to, he said it did not apply.
In which case, BT need to amend their http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/36397/c/346/related/1 page as it clearly states I should be able to retain the £2.50 discount.

@sukieb3 this part is very clear
The only exception to this is if the higher broadband option has a special offer or if you're moving from BT broadband to BT Infinity.

  • My broadband is slower than my neighbours

    Hi,
We have suffered with slow broadband ever since we moved in 2 years ago, and it seems to be getting worse.  After swapping from the previous ISP to BT, due to unrelated issues, I was hoping that the service would be better, but it is not.  I have checked with my neighbours, and they get a theoretical speed of 1.5Mb from the BT speed checker, but I only get 0.256Mb.  I have spent the last few weeks going backwards and forwards between the BT Phone fault line and the BT broadband fault line, but they both blame each other.  My position is that as my phone line comes from the same telegraph pole as my neighbours, then I should get the same service.  BT has a different view and claims that my line might still have a longer routing to the exchange which explains the lower speed. BT states that there is no fault on the line, and the broadband people claimed that there was an exchange fault that has been fixed, but the broadband is, if anything, even slower now.
I have now booked an engineer visit, as I have a very old master socket which is connected to the incoming line via a junction box and very messy looking wiring.  I think the previous owner had an upstairs extension and did a bit of DIY cabling.  I have explained all this to BT, as I do not want to be blamed for interfering on their side of the master socket!  I know that I might end up paying for an NTE5 to be fitted, but it is worth the risk to get them to sort out the wiring and check that the telegraph pole connection is sound.
I have tried moving the router, checked for nearby power cabling, confirmed that the old upstairs extension is fully disconnected etc.
Am I doing the right thing?  Is there anything else that I can do?

BT always give you the best speed possible on your line. The speed prediction we have given here is an estimate. The actual speed is dependent on several factors such as whether you have internal wiring, our network management policy and the number of people using the internet at the same time. Speeds can be lower in the evening at peak times. Please note that availability for BT Infinity is an estimate only when entering your postcode and house number.
I cannot access the hub as I do not know what the password is to get me in!  I thought that it was the admin password on the back, but that does not seem to work.  Klutz!

  • Maybe I was to keen to be happy with Infinity....

Well, title says it all really but after 5 years of **bleep** with Broadband, I got Infinity last week.
7 Days so far and it has, until now been running as steady as a rock at 37.7 Mbps throughput and around 8.5 Mbps up, everyone a winner you would think.
Today I get home and Speedtest now showing at 14Mbps and the connection profile has dropped.  According to the connection time on the HH, it would seem this happened around midnight last night.
    I have gone from :
    38716Kbps Profile
    to
    14262Kbps Profile
The questions are as follows :
    1) Do I simply leave it and hope all goes back?
    2) Is there really a training period on VDSL?
    3) Why the **bleep** does the HH show 4.1GB of upload since reconnect and there has been no one here?
    Any advice, of course appreciated.
    Cheers

Well, 10 days as good as up (all bar a couple of hours) so took a chance and power cycled all power to both (as if a power cut).
After all, you would like to think that BT wouldn't reduce profiles as a result of power cuts, after all, no customer can predict when they will occur nor is it a fault with the line!!
Anyway, I am pleased to report that I am back to my previous profile (I think) which is producing a 37.5Mbps throughput on Speedtest.net using Newbury Server.
BT Speedtester doesn't like my telephone number at the moment, and has always worked fine (issue was still present before power cycle).
Any known faults with the tester at the moment?
On the positive side, at least my profile doesn't appear to have been locked down at 14262 so lets see............................
