BT DNS consistently failing

Hi
I hope one of you can help. I have been with BT for nealy a month now. Long story short, I have paid for BT Infinity 2
and have the home hub 5. I am getting download of approx 50 mb and 14 upload.
Consistently my devices are not able to connect to the internet. I thought this was an issue with my Windows 8 devices (lucky enough to have a Surface Pro3 and another Window Tablet. However, now multiple device only connect to the internet if I use Google's DNS servers. I can browse to a specific IP address on the affected devices but BT's DNS service refuses to work.
Also the internal network performance is shocking. I do have 16 or 17 devices connected to the Home Hub 5 (wired / wireless). I used to be able to stream HD video to wireless devices from the internal network but wireless performance is shockingly poor.
Any idea what the problem may be? Being a DNS issue I assume this must be a BT network issue rather than somthing being wrong with the home Hub? There have been at least 2 or 3 major internet outages in my area over the last week also. I always had a high regard for BT but it feels like I have bought some kind of beta product and really the staff dont care or dont know how to help.

Thanks John
Problem is with the google dns my internet browsing feels slugish. it feels like i am fudging somthing that is broken.  i have a full strength wirelss signal but can only download at a max  5mb to 7mb on wireless.
i just put the home hub into modem mode and connected my old Asus router. Now i do not have any problem streaming HD video etc inside the house but i still have 5mb to 7mb download on the internet via wireless and have to use google dns to browse the internet.
i used to be with virgin and my surface pro would max out at about 100mb plus! having 5mb to 7mb is just poor..... i am really disapointed.
So in sumary using the google DNS allows me to get on the internet but at a sluggish connection rate. some of my devices can get to the internet without me messing with dns and they get 50 odd mb download.  The home hub cant manage my internal network and BT cant give me a decent external network speed consistently to all my devices.

    Thanks Jay.
Now, I have set a local dns server as the default dns

Do you mean I should make the server on which the iMS

  • 451 4.4.0 DNS query failed. The error was: SMTPSEND.DNS.NonExistentDomain

    Hi,
I have two Exchange 2010 servers running on Windows 2008 Ent R2.
These mail servers have been running fine for a few years.
    Today I noticed two things.
    1. users were telling me they were having delays receiving emails from outside of our own domain. The mail gets sent out, but it takes about 15-30 mins for users outside our our domain to get their mail. Mail sent from inside our domain gets delivered right
    away.
    2. An error message that I see when I go to Tools->Queue Viewer in EMC. The error is: 451 4.4.0 DNS query failed. The error was: SMTPSEND.DNS.NonExistentDomain. This error  shows up when you click on the "Queues" tab and then look at the
"hub version 14" under "next hop domain" column.
I'm assuming these two things are related. I don't understand why the problem is just showing up now. As I said, mail delivery has been fine for a while and I haven't done any major updates to the server in a few months.
Thanks for any ideas and suggestions as to what might be causing it and where I can look.
    Mike

    Hi,
    1. I replaced my Cert with the same exact cert from GoDaddy, just an updated expire date.
    2. We have two exchange servers.
    3. The message I am seeing now, is under "Last Error" for every queue (not individual messages).
That error message is:  451 4.4.0 Primary Target IP address responded with 421 4.2.1 Unable to connect. Attempted failover to alternate host but that did not succeed.
    OR
451 4.4.0 DNS query failed. The error was: SMTPSEND.DNS.NonExistentDomain. (This is the same error I mentioned earlier.
I ran some tests on mxmailbox.com for my domain name.I got the following alerts back when running a DNS check.
SOA Serial Number format is invalid. ns.rackspace.com Serial XXXXXXXX : Suggested serial format year was 1402 which is before 1970
    AND
SOA Expire value out of recommended range.  ns.rackspace reported Expire 604800. Expire is recommeded to be between 1209600 and 2419200
I use Rackspace DNS servers for External lookups.
Does this point my mail delay problem to Rackspace or something local on my own machine?
    Thanks!
    Mike

  • Enter Machine Password DNS Update Failed on Mac Pro 10.6.6

Windows 2008 R2 Active Directory with several PCs and 3 MACs, all three at 10.6.6.
Only one, the Mac Pro, is slow to access network resources, gets Enter Machine Password: DNS Update Failed on Console, and is much slower to open webpages than the other 2 MACs; they work fine. I know that AD is configured right since I have no network errors on them.
Can bind and unbind as expected, can access Mac from AD Server as well as other PC/Macs, so this issue is not like most all other posts in that everything works except slow network (opening a network share gets the spinning wait cursor).
    Any Ideas?
    TIA

On the offending Mac open System Preferences->Network pane and highlight the port that you are connecting to the domain. Then in the right side of the pane click on the word "Advanced". In that drop-down select the DNS tab and make sure it has the same DNS that the domain uses. You can use thew + button to add the correct DNS servers. Also while in the Network pane, Advanced, select the WINS tab and fill it the appropriate settings for the Windows Domain.
Also on the offending Mac open System Preferences->Date & Time and make sure the Map Location is correct and also you are using the same Time server that the Domain uses (you can type in the Time Server address in the Time Server field.
Lastly are you using DHCP or Static in your Domain?

  • More details about message with code 31 (DNS update failed) in DHCP log file.

    Hello,
Is there any way in Windows Server 2008 R2 to identify which exactly update has failed in DNS when code 31 is encountered.
It is for "A" record or "PTR" record of DNS ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Andrejs

    Hello Steven,
Thanks for your answer. I will look at DNS event logs.
I am asking about it because in DHCP server log time to time I can see blocks of following records:
    30  04/14/15  16:19:02
    DNS Update Request     10.1.10.5
    PC1.domain.local  0

    DNS Update Successful 10.1.10.5  PC1.domain.local

    6
For this VLAN DHCP is about to update both „A” and „PTR” RRs. Besides that I can that transactionID (2255794051) is the same.
Does it mean that first 3 records are about let’s say “A” RR for which update has failed and last 3 records are for “PTR” RR for which update succeeded?
Or, does it mean that these are two consecutive attempts to update both RRs where first attempt failed but second one succeeded?
    Regards,
    Andrejs.

  • 451 4.4.0 DNS query failed - NonExistentDomain

I am in the process of migrating from Exch 2007 to 2013 for a small company. It is a very simple setup of just a single domain which has
1 server, 1 organization and 1 database. Here is what I have done so far:
    1. Installed a physical server EX13 for Exchange 2013 with SP1. All updates have been applied.
    2. Added a new Receive Connector of EX13 in addition to existing EX07.
    3. Changed SMTP port forwarding on the firewall from EX07 to EX13.
    4. Migrated a few mailboxes to the EX13.
Accounts on both servers have no issues with exchanging email both ways on the Internet. However, when accounts on the old server email to
migrated users, the new server does not always receive the messages promptly. There is a delay as much as 30 minutes that happens sporadically.
I checked the message header on the delayed messages and found that they had been stuck in EX07 for a long time before forwarding to EX13.
From Ex07 queue viewer, I found the following error:
451 4.4.0 DNS query failed. The error was: SMTPSEND.DNS.NonExistentDomain; nonexistent domain
Net Hop Domain: hub version 15
Delivery type: SMTP Relay in Active Directory
    Message Source Name: FromLocal
Last Error: 451 4.4.0 DNS query failed. The error was: SMTPSEND.dns.NonExistentDomain;nonexistentdomain
The status showed "retry" and eventually the message would be delivered. Once it went through, I sent another one again from an EX07
account to EX13 account, the message was received instantly.
So far I have tried the following:
    1. Added a host entry to point EX13.my_external_domain.com to the internal address of EX13
    2. Added an 'A' record on the internal DNS server with the same entry.
    3. Verified that EX13.my_external_domain.com was accessible from EX07 using this FQDN.
    4. Removed EX07 and leaving only EX13 on the Receive Connector list
    5. Removed EX13 and leaving only EX07 on the Receive Connector list
    6. Put both connectors back
There is no change of status. Every morning our users are saying that they could not email users on the new server. Then after 30 minutes,
the problem disappeared but it will come back later in the day. On the other hand, users on the new server do not notice any delay when sending messages to the those on the new box. At this point, I don't feel comfortable migrating more users. Can someone
    please shed some lights?

As suggested by Cara, I queried the message logs of both servers to track the delayed message.  This time, it took an hour for a message to be delivered.

Check for yourself as that article is complaining about OS X client, they openly state
they don't have server to test with. So the complaint is legitimate, but dangerously inaccurate.
Unless you have installed the server update and verified that it does not fix the issue.

  • DNS Lokup fails after waking from sleep

Since the recent update, whenever my computer wakes from sleep the DNS Lookup fails and I cannot connect to the internet for 30sec-1minute. I've never experienced this problem before. Any thoughts?

FWIW, I never sleep my machines or their HDs, just their displays and never have an issue waking up the displays, usually run 24/7. Give that a shot.

  • Local site blocked - DNS lookup failed

Hitting our webpage from the inside is blocked; the policy trace shows Request blocked: Details: DNS Lookup fails
the local webpage is in the Custom URL Catagory- Allow group...
This fails when leaving the www off the front.   www.site.com works but site.com fails...
.site.com and site.com are in the custom URL catagory in an 'allow' group
this is also in the bypass filter

A large amount of sites in the world are unable to resolve domains that do not have www in the front. The easiest example is NASA.  Go to nasa.gov and it does not work.  www.nasa.gov does work.  This is due to the admins configuration.  However like chris mentioned I would confirm that your DNS is opperating correctly.
P.S.  The nasa test might or might not work.  Some browsers automatically change the nasa.gov to www.nasa.gov

    Trace session complete

    Hi Asim,
I would investigate the DNS by establishing an SSH session to the M1 interface.  Do an 'nslookup xyz.com' and see if it resolves.  If it does not resolve, you may want to check your DNS server.

  • App Store consistently fails to update apps - but shows multiple installs

The App Store app on my MBP running OS 10.9.2 consistently fails to install software updates, and shows multiple installations in the Updates "log". I've had to reinstall the OS to get to 10.9.2 after multiple failures (with corresponding entries in App Store Updates and incessant hanging at install), and had to troll around the Apple Support Communities to find a URL for Safari 7.0.3 after it also showed falsely as having updated.
Anyone have an idea about what is going on?  Missing good old Software Update.

    Hi Eskimo Boy,
I have he *EXACT* same issue. I even reinstalled Mavericks completely from scratch and tried TONS of other things.
What I tried so far is (incomplete list):
Set up new user and tried to update => failed.MAS consistently crashes when launched under the new user. => no solution but rather an additional problem => failed.
Tried to update in safe mode => failed.
Tried to reinstall Mavericks => failed.
Tried to reinstall Mavericks and migrate all user data from Time Machine backup => failed.
    Tried PRAM reset => failed.
Even tried the highly overrated check permissions => failed.
Whatever I try, I just can't update iBooks from 1.0 to 1.0.1 and Safari from 7.0.2 to 7.0.3. If you have any solution, then please let me know.
    Cheers, Paul
