  • TRY OPEN DNS OR GOOGLE'S NAMEBENCH TO RESOLVE SAFARI 5 ISSUES

    HI,
2 DAYS AGO, I EXPERIENCED ALL THE PROBLEMS YOU GUYS ARE HAVING WITH THE SAFARI 5 UPGRADE. I THEN SAW A POST ABOUT OPEN DNS CODES CLICKED ON THE ARTICLE ABOUT IT AND PLUGGED IN THE APPROPRIATE NUMBERS. HAS WORKED FINE SINCE. SOMEONE ELSE POSTED ABOUT DNS CODES AND USING GOOGLE'S NAMEBENCH WHICH I HAVEN'T TRIED SINCE THE INTERNET SPEED I AM AT CURRENTLY SUFFICES. HERE IS THE LINK FOR GOOGLE'S NAMEBENCH FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO DOWNLOAD IT: http://code.google.com/p/namebench/ USING THE OPEN DNS RESOLVED ALL ISSUES THAT SAFARI 5 HAD WHEN I UPGRADED. WORKS FINE AND I HAVEN'T EXPERIENCED ANY PROBLEMS SINCE. HERE'S THE ARTICLE EXPLAINING OPEN DNS: http://appletoolbox.com/2010/06/safari-5-0-hangs-while-loading-pages-fix/

No, that link doesn't work but the information is correct!
Adding DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:

If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/bestpractices/#yournetwork and follow the advice given.
(An explanation of why using Open DNS is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )
Wikipedia also has an interesting article about Open DNS:

Go step by step and test.
    1. Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly. It will take a while.
        Restart the computer.

  • Does Google Pubilic DNS block Spamhaus RDNSBL queries?

Our ISP here in Northwest Arizona is CableONE.  We noticed late last year some problems with some of their DNS resolving servers and decided to cut over, as whole, to using Google's Public DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 respectively).  We didn’t realize this at the time of the cutover (11/11/2010), but this had the effect of killing our ability to use Spamhaus for RDNSBL-based rejection of incoming spam.
We specifically use zen.spamhaus.org and bl.spamcop.net for RDNSBL spam rejection (as set in Server Admin under “Mail > Settings > Relay > Use these junk mail rejection servers (real-time blacklist)”.  Both of these servers had been working well for years, but after the cutover to GoogleDNS we found that Zen wasn’t blocking any spam any more, and there was a corresponding tenfold jump in the amount of rejections triggered by SpamCop.  This makes sense since SpamCop was now taking up the slack for the other service.  We didn't realize this in November 2010, but only now as we retroactively searched the mail server logs from last year.
This issue can be demonstrated using the shell commands below.  The bottom line is that through Google's two public DNS servers, the Spamhaus queries *never* show the host as listed, whereas on the four CableONE DNS resolvers they *always* show proper results.  There could also be timing issue having to do with how long it takes older RDNSBL queries to time out.  I wonder if anyone can confirm these results; if not we may be dealing with a local DNS cache poisoning in Google’s public DNS servers, but I can’t imagine that this problem has persisted for a whole five months!!  What I suspect is the case is that Google has a policy where RDNSBL is not supported (or properly handled) on their public DNS servers.
Comments?  Thoughts?  …I’d be interested if anyone else has this problem.  It’s purely a DNS issue, not specific to OS X Server, but it would obviously affect all flavors of OS X Server, not just SL server 10.6.x.
Here's a shell session illustrating the situation.  I’m testing using the address 186.136.114.186, which is an address currently blocked by SpamCop, and the XBL listing on Spamhaus (and also the SBL-XBL and ZEN composite lists as a result).  I apologize if this a host you’re responsible for, I’m just choosing this host as an example to test against.  You can contact SpamCop and Spamhaus to find out why you're being blacklisted; that is outside of what I'm concerned about.

In digging further it seems this is a known issue.  It is not Google DNS that is banning RDNSBL queries to Spamhaus, but rather Spamhaus that does not want queries reaching it from Google's Public DNS servers.  For more info, see the following links:

Okay.... so that explains *why* this is happening.  Now I need to figure out what to do about it.
I’m a bit relucant to switch my mail server to running DNS queries through CableONE because, as I mentioned, we have at least one major client of ours who’s servers aren’t listing properly on CableONE’s DNS resolvers.  We cut our enterprise over to Google Public DNS for that very reason.
Is there a way to direct *just* the RDNSBL queries to work via CableONE resolvers, while leaving the general resolver settings (at /etc/resolv.conf) alone?  In other words, is there any syntax in Postfix that lets you choose which DNS servers resolve RDNSBL queries (aka RBL queries) without forcing you to choose those resolvers for other mail handling functions?
Any help and comments would be appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

  • DNS timeout from Google crawl

    Hey all,
I've just registered my new site with Google webmaster tools, built a sitemap with Rage Sitemap Automator and I'm getting a DNS lookup timeout from the main domain name.
I'm using my own domain name, and the time out is coming from the name on its own, ie. www.hazelmills.com
Could this be because I should not include this domain in the site map without the name of the site and index? ie. www.hazelmills.com/microsite/enter.html ??
    Any advise gratefully received.
    Cheers,

  • DNS lookup failed. How to fix with Google chrome?

"The server at _____.com can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed. This error is often caused by having no connection to the internet or a misconfigured network. It can also be caused by an unresponsive DNS server or a firewall preventing google chrome from accessing the network."

  • Configuring Server DNS for Mail on Google Apps

I'm trying to configure the DNS on my Snow Leopard Server for mail.mydomain.com to point to Google for Google Apps mail hosting.
I thought I could go into mydomain.com and put an alias record to point to ghs.google.com, but that's no longer working. Any ideas of how to get around this? Is there something else I'm doing wrong?

I figured out the problem. It had to do with an alias record hanging up the DNS.

  • Google Chrome messes with my DNS on Yosemite

So I've spent ages today trying to figure this out. I have a nicely upgraded version of Yosemite. All was working well but I couldn't figure out how to make safari full screen without the toolbar (like a kiosk/presentation mode). It was suggested I use Chrome which does have presentation mode. On installing Chrome, it immediately began to not be able to access any website. Safari was then unable to as well. Using network utility to see what the problem was still resulted in ability to ping IP address but not to DNS. Turns out DNS was no longer resolving. Trying an alternate DNS such as Open DNS servers, flushing the cache using a variety of methods suggested on the internet did not resolve it.
However, deleting Google Chrome and setting IP6 to Link-Local mode only did seem to reset it and allow safari and DNS ping/lookup  to work again.
Re-installing Chrome stopped it again. Uninstalling Chrome and rebooting allowed it all to work again.
So for those of you who are having this headache, I can definitely confirm that Google Chrome does something unusual in relation to DNS. I don't know what, but perhaps some boffins here can figure it out.
The problem above is re produceable for me.
    Good luck solving it internets.

    Patrick,
You will be using the DNS server configured in the VPN profile. The DNS server could be removed from the profile, but it also depends if you are allowed to route locally while connected to the VPN?

  • Use Google's Public DNS Server To Fix Apple TV Streaming Problems

Many people have been having a streaming problem with the Apple TV - especially with Netflix. In fact, it's often the most popular topic on this forum. After having the same problem off and on for two years, I finally figured out the following solution. It uses Google's public DNS service instead of your ISPs DNS.
    1. Navigate to Settings >> General >> Network and select Configure TCP/IP.
    2. Select “Manually” next to Configure IP.
    3. Dont change the IP address or the Subnet Mask and Router Address. Just click "Done".
    4. Set the DNS Address screen with the following: 008.008.008.008 and click “Done.”
You should now be able to stream more smoothly on your Apple TV.
This problem is probably caused by a bad streaming server somewhere on Netflix's CDN (Content Delivery Network). The DNS points your Apple TV based on location. By using Google's DNS, you get a different streaming server. That is, of course, a wild guess and is not verifiable by me. But, it makes sense so I'm going with that.
If this works for you, please buy a cup of coffee for a complete stranger or some other selfless, random act of kindness.

Welcome to the  tv Discussion Forums.
Barring interference to the network (which is probably unlikely but not totally out of the question) I'd agree that your problem seems specific to one mac. IMHO reinstalling an OS is more often than not a lazy mans way of saying they can't be bothered to look for the problem and totally unnecessary so far as I am concerned. I don't believe any version of itunes has been a problem for the tv, although there have been the usual problems posted that usually accompany any upgrade (these are more than likely due to updating over damaged files).
Reinstalling itunes will replace the application but not many of the associated preference files that are more likely to be a problem than the application itself. Rather than reinstalling itunes, I'd try creating a new user and try itunes in the new user account to see if the problem persists.
You could also create a new library in the original user account and see if you have similar problems with that library.
Check your network settings and compare them to the other macs that work OK, check for proxy servers and DNS addresses.

  • WRT400N - Google DNS setup?

    Hello everyone,
Just a quick question on how to setup Google DNS (Or OpenDNS) on the WRT400N?
The WRT400N has three places to put DNS servers when you select the Static IP option (I have a DHCP connection, so I would have to alter my IP everytime it changes by chance?), but Google and OpenDNS only use two DNS IPs.
How does one configure this correctly. Searching the forums here didn't yield any results on the topic, and usually I would just flash DD-WRT on the router, but it looks like this one is not fully supported.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You cannot change your internet connection type from DHCP to Static IP if your ISP requires DHCP. You will get into big trouble if you do. If your ISP uses DHCP then your ISP is free to assign any IP address to you at any time they want. If you use a static IP address, sooner or later you will create an IP address conflict because "your" IP address has been assigned to someone else...
The only place where you can enter the DNS servers is in the DHCP server of the WRT. Enter them there. Then your LAN computers will use the DNS server you want. The WRT itself will always use the DNS servers of your ISP but that shouldn't matter. It does not support DHCP with static DNS on the internet connection.
If you have more than 2 fields leave the other empty.

I want to use Google DNS. I had read that even if I enter the Google DNS that Verizon will overwrite them and use their own DNS. Is that true?
An option would be to diable the Verizon DNS and enter Google DNS in each computer/component. Would that be better?

No you can use whatever DNS you want.
Entering DNS settings in the Verizon MI424WR router to opt out of DNS AssistanceNote: The Verizon MI424WR router screens may vary slightly from those shown below, depending on when you purchased your Verizon router and the version of firmware loaded on it.
Open a Web browser and enter http://192.168.1.1 in the Address bar at the top of the screen.
Enter your router user name and password into the login screen.
Select your time zone in the Time Zone field.
    Click OK.
    Click My Network.
    Click Network Connections.
Click the Edit icon for the Broadband Connection type that has "Connected" in the "Status" column. Don't confuse the Broadband Connection with the Network (Home/Office). In the example below, "Connected" is displayed in the Status column for the "Broadband Connection (Ethernet)," so the Edit icon would be clicked in the Action column of that row.
When the Broadband Connection Properties screen displays, look about halfway down the screen for the DNS Servers information. Write down the DNS server addresses, and then clickSettings at the bottom of the screen.
Find the DNS Server area about halfway down the screen.
Change the last octet of the Primary and Secondary DNS Server addresses to 14. For Example:
You look up the DNS information and the server numbers are:
    123.123.123.12 Primary DNS
    123.123.123.12 Secondary DNS
You would change the addresses to the following when statically assigning them to the computer or modem/router.
    123.123.123.14 Primary DNS
    123.123.123.14 Secondary DNS
Note that the .14 is the special set of servers that will opt you out of the DNS Assistance program.
    Click Apply.
Click Apply to confirm that you won't be able to connect to Verizon while the DNS server information is saved.
Review the updated Network (Home/Office) DNS settings to confirm your new DNS settings have been saved.
    Click Apply.
Close the Verizon MI424WR router setup window.
    Restart your computer.
After your computer restarts, open a web browser and enter http://www.verizon.com/ to test your new DNS settings. The Verizon home page should display.

  • Should i use google dns servers?

heard it speeds up the internet with faster dns lookups & its very reliable.. should i use it instead of BT's?

There is also the similar DNSBench as well as namebench mentioned above.  http://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm
I think pretty similar, though namebench is hanging for me at the moment and DNSBench is working.
OpenDSN servers sometimes divert quite a lot of calls to go via OpenDNS servers.  This is partly to add filtering features to the result.  It means that even though their DNS servers are fast (far from fastest for me), common web access (including Google search) is sometimes a little slower than it should be.  This can be got around by explicity configuring of your OpenDSN services at the OpenDNS site.
I think it possible that Google's servers do data mining on your DNS requests.  I'm not sure if this is the case, and you may not mind anyway.
It is worth setting up DNS servers using different people for primary and secondary (and tertiary), as this increases resilience in the unikely case of a major failure of OpenDNS or Google DNS or whoever.
My current choice is   194.73.82.242, 212.118.241.1, 217.72.163.3  (BT Telehouse, InternapUK, HotChilli).  They were best according to DNSBench at some point, and have never been significantly worse than best to be worth changing.
To me, inability to set DNS servers at the router is the weakest point of the the HomeHub.

  • IWeb Website with Google E-mail and ZoneEdit DNS

I have an iWeb website, and currently run domain e-mail through 1and1. It seems ridiculous to pay for 1and1 email when I can get domain e-mail for free with GoogleApps. The only problem is I am not sure how to manage DNS outside of the 1and1 environment. I looked into ZoneEdit, but I cannot find specific instructions for setting up iWeb DNS properly on ZoneEdit so as not to break e-mail like the instructions I found here in the forum for 1and1.
I was wondering if anyone else uses domain e-mail, iWeb, and ZoneEdit, and if so how you set up DNS.
    Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. I had already researched the various forum posts (as it is now, I have the personal domain set up and functioning appropriately). The issue is that most of the posts have little to do with the tendency of CNAMEs to break email functionality. ZoneEdit strongly discourages CNAMEs in the FAQ you referenced for mainly that reason.
I made use of a very good post in setting up 1and1 DNS to work properly with iWeb and my domain - all without breaking e-mail. I am looking for someone who did the same thing with ZoneEdit.
I will keep looking through the posts, but so far a ZoneEdit example that includes maintaining domain based e-mail is elusive!

  • IMessage not working on my iPhone 4. Google DNS 8.8.8.8 method isn't working. What should I do?

When I try to sign on into iMessage on my iPhone 4, I get an error message saying "could not sign in.  Please check your network connection and try again". My wifi connection Is fine and I even tried on 3G but nothing...... What do I have to do to get it to work????????

I have this problem too - and it is on a BRAND new iPhone 6 - I have definitively tracked the issue to the moment I upgraded to iOS 8.1.2 - and am beyond frustrated. No fix to tell you about, sorry…but you can read my post here if you are into the whole "misery loves company" thing: iOS 8.1.2 Cellular data problem (Definitive - maybe)
