BT Engineers have stolen my number!

I recently left BT (two weeks ago) to move to O2 because they were offering me a good package with broadband/phone included. The move went fine, my phone didn't stop working though there was an unrelated delay with the broadband.
I got the broadband go-ahead this weekend, and started trying to set it up last night. It wouldn't work and I eventually realised the reason was that my phone line was dead. I rarely use it, and have been away for a couple of days so i don't know how long it's been down.
I rang O2 and they said they would look into it. I wondered what my friends would be hearing when they called me on my landline, as it obviously wasn't ringing in my house, so I rang my home phone number from my mobile... Incredibly, a strange man answered!
He said that he had had some trouble with his phone and had been assigned a temporary number, which is my number! There is nothing I can do! It's maddening.
I find it incredibly frustrating not understanding how this all works, but does anyone have ANY idea how long this will take to sort it out, and how I can get it sorted?
O2 are working on it, but are obviously beholden to BT. BT are sending an engineer to my house on Friday, though why they are coming here I have no idea since clearly the problem is at the exchange...
Any tips? I tried calling BT but because I'm not a customer I can't speak to them. It seems so wrong that we are all still beholden to BT when we don't want to be their customer any more...

your number should have been transfered too o2,have you ask o2 to call your number. your number is not a temp as it is still live and o2 should be in control of it and not bt

The advisor should not have told you this for legal reasons. There is no way of tracking the iPhones just of finding out which SIM cards were used to activate them and if they were activated at all. Court can authorize Apple to release this information to the count. There is no legal way without involving a judge.

Is there any way to locate a stolen ipad if I have the Serial number but didn't turn on the Find My Ipad?

My Ipad (and backpack, laptop, & other stuff) was stolen at the Portland Oregon Airport at 1:30 PM on 2/27/12.
unfortunately I had not turned on the Find My Ipad function. I do have the serial number and the IMEI number (although I never enabled the 3g function).

Apple are not in the business of tracing your stolen iPad, any more than the manufacturer of your car will trace that if stolen.
Tell your service provider (now, before the thief spends a few thousand on international calls....), the police and your insurer.

IMEI number carrier can track a device with but only way to do it is when the police bring a warrent

The serial number alone is not useful for Find My iPhone / iPod. It is useful to establish ownership, should you recover the iPod.
You would have had to enable "Find My iPod" in Settings > General.

If they haven't already wiped it and started over, and you activated Find my iPhone on your iPad, you might be able to track it. If you did not activate Find my iPhone, you will not be able to track it. Apple will not help you. But, you should immediately go and change your Apple ID password, and any other passwords you use for accounts like Twitter, Facebood, Mail, Apps you make purchases with, like the Starbucks Mobile App, etc.

If you haven't turned on FindMyiPhone in settings (yes, even for the iPod), there's nothing you can do. Apple will not help you find it using the serial number. If you did turn it on and the thief doesn't get into the iPod (you did have a passcode set, right?), then go to iCloud website using a browser, log in and try finding the iPod. Unless the thief reset the device to factory settings, and if the wifi isn't off, it's location should show on the map. After that it's up to you to report its location to the police.

Your only chance is setting it up as new device without using the latest backup afterwards, which you already did.

Go to the Apple website and your support profile. It should list that iMac and the serial number for it. You'll need your Apple ID and password for that Apple ID.

Regarding your music, yes you can download it again at no cost. Launch iTunes on the new computer, and sign in to your account using the same Apple ID you used previously. Go to the iTunes Store. On the right side under Quick Links select Purchased. Click on All Songs in the upper left.You'll see a list of the music you purchased from iTunes. In the lower right corner click the Download All link. Note that this may take a long time, particularly if you have a lot of songs. Use the fastest Internet connection that you can.
About the computer, unless tracking software was already installed on it and turned on there is no way to track it.
I would suggest changing passwords of any accounts that you have on the computer, such as email. If you have any credit card information stored on the computer, have them cancelled and replaced immediately.

If you turned on Settings > iCloud > Find My iPad before it was stolen you can use the steps under "If Find My iPhone is enabled on your missing device" in the following link: If your iPhone, iPad, user iPod touch is lost or stolen - Apple Support
If you had not turned on Find My iPad before it was lost, there isn't a way to locate it. There are some suggestions in the "If Find My iPhone isn't enabled" section near the bottom regarding changing passwords and other steps.

If you have an iCloud account the you can go to www.iCloud.com and sign in with your Appleid. Click on Find my iPhone and Find it's location, deactivate or Wipe it.
I would also call your Mobile service provider and have them cancel the service for that unit.
