BT Faster slow - lack of master socket the problem...

My new BT Faster FTTC broadband is not delivering the promised speed, and I hoped someone here might have some knowledgable suggestions.
I was promised a speed of 12-18Mbps down, but it's actually delivering (on first day) just over 8Mbps.
(The promised speed matches that returned by the dslchecker for my number, and the actual speed has been measured using speedtest.net as well as BT Wholesale speedtest).
Wondering if at least part of the problem is that the premises doesn't have a proper master socket. The only live sockets are "extension" sockets. I've plugged into the one of these nearest the small BT junction (?) box just inside the house to try to optimise speed.
I did warn BT that the house didn't have a proper master socket and requested an engineer install for this reason, but they insisted I try a self install of the HH5 and "see how it goes". I wonder if the speed wouldn't be improved to something closer to that promised if there was a master socket installed (an NTE5 or even a SSFP Infinity).
Any advice on how I should proceed and/or whether I should go back to BT to request they install a master socket? Any and all help would be much appreciated!
In case of any help, here are the hub stats from the "Helpdesk" view:

  • Broadband speed / lack of master socket

My broadband speed according to all the speed tests is around 0.5Mb/s - sad, I know.   One of the things I wanted to try to bump it up a bit was to plug the router into the master socket.  It looks like we don't have one but one of those old junction box things above the front door.  Has anyone had any luck trying to persuade BT to replace a junction box with a normal master socket?  All advice welcome.

That thing above your door will just be a block terminal, they have them in place because the external cable can not extend inside your premises for more than two metres. This is because the plastic sheathing on it releases chemicals when burns, but to be honest if your house is on fire there are probably 101 other plastic household items that will also release harmful fumes on top of the already harmful fumes from the fire itself.
By the sounds of you will just have a LJU for your NTP, aka master socket. Will probably have the old T logo on it?
Anyway, as mentioned above you can't just ask they come and replace it. Openreach operate a 'if it ain't broke don't fix it policy' so if you called an engineer out they will charge you £130 for a wasted visit as it will have been right when tested. Depending on the engineer, he may replace it while on site but chances are he might not as it will be an easy close for him and he can get to his next job.

  • "Master socket or lack of"

Ok trying to trce the phone lines
black drop line comes into the house via a door frame somewhere near the bottom of the door frame on the iside a white cable exits and on the end of this after a pass under the floor the cable ends at what looks like a BT master - single piece like an extension , cap inside and BT trumpeter logo however nothing its connected to it. My partner seems to think there is an old GPO box in the door frame!
there is an extension box on the oter side of the wall from the incoming wire which has a further extension bodged into it and on the end is the BT home hub and Vision box the phone works off the home hub
is it worth getting an eingineer in to sort it out a the master has clearly been stuck on a patched wire and the whole thing has been bodged and patched by previous occupant
Broadband is down to 1.something to a max of 3Kbps as for phone we dont have any hard wired phones to check the line.
are we liable for any charges for getting it sorted or likley to be fined for the messing about with the drop wire?

OK further investigation black drop wire goes into the door frame and caught in behind the standard for the door is a small white junction box, from that emerges 2 white  wires, one presumably goes to the small single piece master socket, the other goes to what looks like a cheap DIY shed extension box from which comes a further extension under the floors to where the BThub is plugged, As the hub hasnt been attached to a "master" (the extension has no capacitor or anything in it) will this be contributing to the braodband speed drop off and vision not working.
As i said in OP no phones connected to the sockets so cant really test the line with a handset.
whats the best way to configure the set up for best quality
    Hi
The socket that you think is the master is it possible for you to plug the Home hub into that? ensure that there is nothing else plugged into the other sockets, goto www.speedtester.bt.com and run a speed test.
I know you say that you do not have a corded phone to test the line but to ensure that you do not have a noisy line which (would cause speed issues) can you not beg/steal or borrow one?

  • 3 Master Sockets in the same room

So I have 3 Master sockets in one room (yes don't know why there are so many in the first place, previous owner probably) so I have 3 master sockets the 3rd still has the bt piper logo and the first one has the t logo so I might plan to move the home hub to the third one can I do that? the hub is currently connected to the 2nd one which has the openreach logo and stuff..

Do all 3 sockets still work?
Its possible that only one is the Master, more than likely the Openreach branded one and the others are just asting as extensions. You can do that by just connecting the Battery, Earth and Bell Wire to the terminals on the faceplate of the other two NTE's and not the A and B terminals on the back plate.
I used to do it for a living and sometimes when I changed sockets around for whatever reason and didn't have a flush mounted LJU on me I would just do what I described above. Might confuse an engineer for the whole of two minutes but they would soon work out which is the master and which is the extension.

  • No access to my master socket - can I still get In...

Hi, I'll try and keep this as short as possible...!
I recently ordered Infinity.  The BT engineer came and couldnt install as he couldn't access my master socket.  I do know where it is, as my brother-in-law and I wired up the sockets a few years back when we were refurbishing.
Unfortunately however, the master socket is about 2 foot below the floor-boards in my dining room, which is then covered with a wooden floor, which I cannot lift.  From that master socket, the primary line runs underneath my house all the way to the wall at the back where it comes up into a modular plate with 1 telephone socket, (along with an ehternet port and 2x co-axials for sky) .  From the master socked under the ground another secondary cable comes out at the front of the house and up to the front bedroom which services my phone and my second sky box, i.e. I need this cable to allow my sky multi-room to work.
From the master socked underground we ran ethernet cabling from there to the socket at the back of the house, so Im sure there are at least 2 pairs of wires running to that socket, possibly 6, (if we ran only 2 upstairs to the secondary socket)
Hope ive explained my setup sufficiently.  Can anyone advise if Infinity can be installed on the primary line at the back of the house based on this information?  Or let me know if I need to clarify anything else?
any help would be much appreciated! thanks

    ok thanks.
Problem is, if they put a new master socket in, my old master will be disconnected and the lines going to the back of the house and the bedroom upstairs will be cut off, and I depend on both those lines being there for both sky boxes to work, and also for my router to link back into my network wiring which runs throuhgout the house (again all channeled into walls and under floors so not easy to change)
Ill call BT tonight and see if they'll let me order Infinity 1 then.  Even if my line speed is affected, I currently have their standard broadband (which they say runs at between 3-6mbps but it doesnt), its really slow, much slower than virgin adsl line which I had previsouly, but swapped to get BT sport free   So any improvement on speed will be welcomed tbh
    Thanks again

  • BT Infinity 2 and Master Socket.

Hello all. We ordered our BT infinity 2 and telephone line and they said the engineer will be coming on the 13th to set things up. After looking through the installation of BT infinity I found out that it has to be connected to a master socket. This is my problem.
My master socket is located right next to my main door and there is an extention socket in my bedroom. Can I have the master socket moved during installation ? Having a bt hub where you keep your shoes looks odd. Will the engineer relocate the master socket or change the extention socket into a a master socket or I shouldn't be expecting anything ?

Reading through some of the posts, a lot of the installation depends on whether you get a decent engineer, luckily I did.
My master socket was in a downstairs room and my study / office is in the room right above it. I explained to the engineer what I wanted / needed. He was a bit hesitant as he said it meant him having to drill through an external wall, No it won't as I already have a hole that talkes an extension from the master to the study, right easy he says he could convert the extension to the master and make the old master socket the extension. Great, cup of tea and a few hob nobs later job done.
If the engineer can not do what mine did he should fit a 30m extension lead to the master socket and you can plug the hoem hub to this, my understanding is that the extension cable is pinned to skirting or wall they will not lay kit under carpet.
    Good luck
    Sholtie

  • DO I need to connect to my Master Socket?

In short, my question is ... does my home hub have to be connected to the master phone socket?
I am looking to take on BT phone, broadband and TV package but my master socket is in my kitchen.  The house is 10 years old and from that master socket the builder installed other BT phone points throughout the house.  Can I have the home hub connected to my livingroom socket which is obviously not the master socket but a "spur" from the master socket?
I don't fancy having the hub in my kitchen.
    Thanks.

You can have the master socket moved - so Openreach engineer will do some "messing about" with your cabling and make a different socket your master.
Or you can have a data cable run from the existing master socket to a more suitable location - this is a handy option if you're unsure of the quality of your internal wiring.

  • Fast/slow/reverse

when i apply the fast/slow/reverse effect, my video gets 'herky-jerky' and slightly blurred.
    How can i fix this?
I recorded using the built in isight, and saved to a Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) drive.
    Thanks in advance!

Matti Haveri, who posts on this forum, pointed out that iM6.0.2 renders deinterlaced vido when it exports to iDVD, so the motion in the fast/slow reverse effect is jerky when watched on an interlaced TV. You may be experiencing a carry over of that bug.
If it is that bug, Matti's suggested work around is to use the freeware program JESdeinterlacer to render smoother fast/slow/reverse. Check out the following site: www.xs4all.nl~jeschot/home.html#DEI
Or, to use iM4 if you still have it on your computer.
I use iM6.0.3, and my speed-up effect is jerky in preview playback, but seems to render O.K. when burned and played on an interlaced TV. So perhaps the bug as fixed or ameliorated in 6.0.3.

  • HT1379 My computer I-mac is running super slow.  If I zap the PRAM it goes back to running well , briefly... a few hours, then back to super slow.  What is the resolution for this problem?  I have a Time machine that does back up well.

My computer is running super slow.  I can correct the problem briefly by zapping the PRAM but is resumes as a problem after a few hours.  I have good time machine (capusle) backup daily.  I have done a disk verify and there doesn't appear to be anything wrong there.
Help, this is wasting a lot of time to do simple functions.

  • Timeline slowing down playback / deleting tracks remedies problem

Here's a nasty bug I've been running into lately.
I've noticed (on the latest version of Premiere CC 2014) that sometimes a timeline/sequence in a project will start to slow down during playback. It slows down not only the advance of the playhead (in terms of how often it's refreshing) but more annoyingly, it slows down video playback in the program monitor. It happens even when footage has been rendered and should exhibit minimal stress on the system.
To illustrate that it's just the timeline, not the video itself, the problem can be "fixed" in three ways:
    1. Zoom in on the timeline until playback smooths out again. If a small enough piece of the timeline is visible, it seems to smooth out playback again.
    2. Maximize the program monitor window (so that it's the only visible window in Premiere) and then again, immediately playback snaps to full speed again. I can full-screen the video playback, etc, without issue. And un-rendered portions of footage with effects applied play better as well.
    3. Reduce the number of video/audio tracks. This is what I think is actually slowing down Premiere. But the problem is, I don't have that many tracks to begin with. On the project I'm working on right now, I have 4 video tracks and 5 audio tracks. Simply deleting the bottom 3 audio tracks (which are sparse and only have a few incidental effects) fixes my video/GUI playback problem immediately.
So my question is... why is Premiere slowing to a crawl just because I added a few audio tracks to a project? Apparently my machine is fast enough to edit 4K material off the GH4 with effects applied and not drop a frame. But add a few tracks of stereo audio? Premiere slows to a crawl.
It wasn't like this in previous versions, guys. Please advise.

Try accessing your audio from a different drive location.

  • Painfully slow connection with new master socket

    Hi forum
Hoping for some advice or perspective on possible issue with my broadband connection. Perhaps unrelated, but I recently had a new master socket fitted (NTE5), however the broadband speed in the house is now painfully slow.
Am using BT Home Hub 4, below are the rest results I'm receiving, however I'm curious as to whether 0.25Mbps really is likely to be the maximum achievable speed, as this renders several services almost unusable.
Grateful if anyone feels there is more that could be done.
    Thanks,

  • Oracle 10gr2 Master/detail form running very slow when you navigate to the detail record.

Hi All, I have a master detail  form, running in webserver, when I navigate to the detail block, the form start buffering and buttering for about 2 min. There is a trigger when-new-record instance that is firing when you navigate to  a new record : The select part of this stament is taken a long time to execute. Please advise.
    Thanks.

Thanks Andrea for your prompt response, the problem is the select statement and like I stated, I tuned the select statement in toad and what normally takes 23 secs is taking less than 1 sec to run. If I comment out the call to the function, it is still slow. The select stament will returned null and it will still be slow. When I comment out the for loop, it run very fast. I dont know what else to do than tuned the select statement.
