BT Homehub 5 randomly drops Wireless link to HP Sc...

I have an HP Deskjet 3520e Printer/Scanner connected wirelessly to my Sony VAIO laptop via a BT Homehub 5. The hub randomly drops the link to the scanner. The connection via my previous (five year old Netgear) router worked faultlessly. So far neither the BT helpline nor the BT diagnostic software have managed to identify or fix the problem. Grateful for any help. Raffles

Hi. Welcome to the forums.
How far away are the wireless devices from the hub ? It could be that it's trying to use 5Ghz wireless, which has a much less of a distance reach.
The hub settings should be altered so that the 5Ghz wireless has a different name (SSID). I've recommended adding ".5" to the name. Alternatively turn off 5Ghz altogether.

  • Randomly dropping wireless connection,

At some indeterminate time in the past ( I cant tie it to a specific event), I started having problems with my wireless connection.
This is a series of events that I believe happens when the network drops, but it is not 100% repeatable.
If the PB goes into energy saver mode, with the lid open, when I attempt to use the network, the antenna strength is good, but nothing connects, by which I mean that Safari is "Looking" for the website.
Rebooting solves the problem , but I also discovered that just closing the lid, waiting for 10 sec, opening it again. reestablishes the connection. Its a pain but it works.
This happens with MAIL, SAFARI, ITUNES, Firefox..... so it is not just the client..
Any ideas on problem/solution.. please reply

Determined that this is an antenna problem,
search forums for "antenna" to see my later post.

  • 46WX800U TV randomly dropping wireless settings

Every day or so... usually in the middle of a Netflix or VUDU session, my new TV will drop its wireless settings completely and I have to re-enter them.  Anyone else seeing this?
I have about 15 devices on my wireless network, none of which have any issues... just the TV.
My wireless network is configured with WPA2.
Thinking of sending the TV back to Amazon anyway... UI is painfully slow, and no sign of any updates.

    Hi
Such similar issues were posted a lot of times here in this forum.
I remember that it could be solved by updating the WLan driver and the BIOS.
I dont know what WLan card was built-in but all compatible WLan drivers and the right BIOS should be placed on the Toshiba European driver page.
Check your notebooks driver download area and update the mentioned software parts.
    Bye

  • WRT54GX2 Drops Wireless at Random

Standard wireless set up connected to a cable modem, used WPA encryption and MAC Address restrictions on my devices for security, disabled SSID Broadcast, running on Channel 6. Firmware is the most current available from Linksys. The router drops Wireless every 20-30 minutes or so and I have to unplug it and plug it back in. On the verge of returning it to the store, but wanted to see if I was missing something.

check for any wireless interfence (cordless phone, microwave). try also changing the channel from 6 to 11, 1, 2. and the advance wireless settings : RTS 2304 abd Fragmentation threshold: 2304.

  • BT HomeHub2 Randomly Dropping Devices

So, we've been using BT broadband for a good few years now, and an interesting problem keeps cropping up. Occasionally the router will refuse to allow a particular device to connect to it via wireless for a period of time (somewhere between a few minutes and a few hours). After this time, the router continues to work as though nothing at all had happened, with nothing out of the ordinary appearing in the event log, and the other devices don't show any connection problems whilst this is happening. Using the automatic setup CD just makes things worse, since when it fails to connect to the router we specify, it instead connects to the nearest BTOpenZone hotspot, then claims to be working when it is still impossible to connect to our own router.
The router still shows up in the wireless network list, and attempting to connect to it doesn't return any error messages, the process just halts after about a minute of "waiting for the wireless network". The first time we had this problem, we rang up the BT helpline who gave us some slightly nonsensical answer about the HomeHub only being able to accept connections from a maximum of three devices at any one time, so rather than asking them again to get exactly the same fairly useless answer, I'm putting the question here. Why does the HomeHub2 randomly drop people from the network, and how do we stop it?

Well, I assumed that the disk would just attempt to connect me to the wireless and nothing more, and when you're trying to fix a problem that nobody else believes exists, you'll try pretty much anything.
The issue, though, is not with connecting from the hub to the internet. The hub never has any major problems with that (other than occasionally deciding that 40% packet loss is the way to go). The issue is that it will drop one of our computers from its network at random, but do nothing to any of the others, and then refuse to allow that one computer to reconnect to it.

  • Firefox 3.5 and up randomly drop connections

Greetings! The problem I'm having is: Every time I've tried to install and use Firefox 3.5 and up, as I'm browsing the web and I go to, say, click on a link, Firefox will randomly "drop" the connection. It'll pause for 10-15 seconds, then pop up a generic "cannot find server" message. I then go to reload the page, and for another 10-15 seconds it won't even attempt a connection -- it'll just instant-reload with the same generic "cannot find server" message. After that, it will mysteriously be able to connect just fine... for about 2-5 minutes. The problem repeats... over and over...
I should mention that I constantly have a "ping www.rr.com" window open in the background, and even when Firefox is "unable to connect", the ping window shows my connection is just fine. All of my other programs are able to connect just fine as well -- only Firefox 3.5+ or programs based off of Firefox 3.5+ (SeaMonkey 2.x) have this problem.
Thinking it might be an addon problem, I've completely uninstalled (even using Revo Uninstaller) and reinstalled Firefox 3.5+, and even with absolutely no extensions installed, it still randomly drops connections.
This problem also happens on my netbook PC, again with a fresh Firefox install (even on a fresh Windows format + install) and a solid ISP connection.
I can confirm encountering this problem with Firefox 3.5.4, 3.5.5, 3.6.6, and even with SeaMonkey 2.0.3 and 2.0.5. On the other hand, Firefox versions 2.0.0.20 and SeaMonkey 1.1.18 are NOT affected by this problem.
I hope this problem can be resolved soon, since sites like Youtube are starting to really dislike Firefox 2.0, and I'd like to use up-to-date browser extensions. :(

  • E3200 - Dropping wireless connection on the Mac

Pros: Gig Eth switch, no front-facing indicator lights, familiar web interface...
Cons: WiFi Protected Setup doesn't belong. Continually drops wireless connections to my Mac Book Pro (but none of my other devices), which worked just fine on the E3000 this unit replaced and works perfectly on other WiFi networks. REALLY SLOW web interface - average time to move from one page to the next is something north of 9 seconds. Again, never a problem with the E3000 that this unit replaced. Price? I wouldn't complain about price if this thing actually worked as expected.
Other Thoughts: I'm hoping it's just a flaky/defective unit and not indicative of the overall quality of newer Linksys products. Firmware isn't the issue - it's running the latest one from Linksys' site.

First of all please verify that you have got a 802.11n card in your computer. New generation routers (i.e. E3200) speaks an entirely different language with 802.11g cards, so while those adapters can work with the E3200, but they are not optimized to provide good performance. It is like having to translate from one language to another in real time when going from N to G.
Well, there are few things you should keep in mind with regards to N routers:
    1) For the best possible speeds, you need to be using WPA2-AES as your security mode. Any other security mode will see your speed/range capped.
Any G devices in your wireless network will tend to hamper the performance of your overall network.
Ensure that your router is running the latest firmware from homesupport.cisco.com The new firmware includes performance enhancements and fixes.
The router by default uses a channel setting of auto, which means that it would keep switching channels depending on the interference. I’d recommend you set it to a fixed channel. Usually, 1, 3, 6 and 9 give you the best performance depending on your environment of course. I’d suggest you try different channels, observing each for a while, to see which gives you the best performance. You can follow the link here on how to change channels.

  • Ipod connection causing netgear wireless link to fail

Every time I connect my ipod to windows, my wireless link (netgear router) fails, and I have to turn my computer off an on again. Using itunes v7 with 4th generation ipod.

DHCP lease time on the router is 30 minutes.
It appears that the clients, specifically the only wireless laptop on the network, drops the connection and when it reconnects it gets a new lease and IP address.  This happens many times until all IPs are in use.  I don't know why the lap top drops the connection when the signal strength is excellent.
I have seen the MAC address of the Client in some cases but the majority are the WRE.
I've linked to some pictures of the router set up, the DHCP client list, and the basic WRE setup.  There are only 3 wireless devices in my home, 1 laptop, 2 iPhones.  I guess a neighbour could be trying to connect but I do have MAC address filtering turned on so only included MAC Addresses can connect.
I guess I could always update the firmware but I only want to do that if it will fix this issue.  I tried the live chat today but I didn't have access to my home network so there wasn't much that we could do.

  • IPhone 4/iPad (Gen 1) randomly losing wireless connection

    Hi
I have an iPad and iPhone 4 both with latest software (4.3.4) - over the last week or so I have noticed that my wireless connection on both devices seems to randomly drop out and I have to turn wifi off then on again from the device and I'm connected again (until it drops out again) - I would probably do this at least 5 times a day and it's getting annoying
As well as turning wifi off and on i have also tried the following, but the connection still keeps dropping:
    reset network settings within settings
renew lease within wifi networks settings
    turned off bluetooth
Changed to just WPA only and WPA2 only wireless security protocols (instead of WPA2/WPA combined) through modem
    Rebooted modem
    Changed wireless channel through modem
Now just for the record, before this issue started I ALWAYS had stable connection on both devices, I have not changed any connections or hardware on my network since this problem began - also, I know there is absolutely nothing wrong with my wireless signal being broadcast from my modem because I have a Macbook Pro (2010) and a Macbook Air (recently released model) that both connect wirelesly and the connection to both are rock solid (so when my IOS devices are not connecting my Macbooks are still connected and online without a hitch)
Also, the wireless icon on both devices show full strength when they are not connecting
Has any of the Apple gurus out there had this issue and been able to resolve it? If you could let me know how you achieved this I would be eternally grateful
    Thanks
    Regards
    VFP

Presumably you have a modem/router combination?
Since you have two devices exhibiting this problem (which they did not previously have) this points to your router having developed a problem despite the fact that some other devices still seem to work with it. You, in fact, do NOT know that there is nothing wrong with your router because some devices can still connect to it. They should all connect to it if it were working correctly.
Test your iPad and iPhone on some other networks to eliminate the small probability that both have failed at exactly the same time. If they function well on other networks then replace your router (as an alternative you could try doing a factory reset of your router to see if this fixes the problem - see your router documentation to see how to do a reset. If this is a router/modem combo you should check with your ISP)

  • Spinning wheel in App Store & Randomly dropping WiFi

    Hi there,
I'm having various problems with my iPad 2 16gb WiFi and searching various forums hasn't helped me find a resolution, so I'm hoping that someone here may have experienced the problem or maybe able to offer a solution.
I'm pretty new to Apple products, having recently moved to an iPhone 4 and an iPad 2 from similar devices with another well known brand of OS, so I'm not sure if something is wrong or if this is normal behaviour.
    Symptoms
When connected to WiFi and trying to browse the app store, I often get a 'spinning wheel' and nothing seems to load, I've even left the iPad for over 10 minutes and still nothing happens. I can try and search, look at featured apps, but I don't get a connection. The iPad is definitely connected to WiFi as I can browse in Safari without any issues. The only way I can get around this problem is to hold the power and home button down to reset the device, sometimes this takes 2 or 3 attempts. My iPhone4 doesn't have this problem and it's sat on the same wireless LAN as the iPAD. I've tried turning off WiFI and turning it back on, but that doesn't resolve the issue, a reset is the only way to gain access to the App store again.
Another strange problem I get is that the WiFi connection on the iPad will just randomly drop out, I'll happily be browsing away and it will just disconnect leaving me with no internet connection. It reconnects after a few minutes, but occasionally I have to reboot the device to get it to connect again. My iPhone4 and other devices don't suffer this problem.
I thought this might be an issue with my router, but I've reproduced this problem on 3 different wireless networks now all with different brands of routers.
I've tried restoring the device to factory settings, upgrading the firmware on my router, rebooting the router, tested on multiple wireless LANs and the problem just won't go away, it's getting quite frustrating really. It can happen after 5 minutes, or 5 hours, there doesn't seem to be any pattern to it.
Sorry for the long post, but if anyone has any suggestions or can offer any explanation as to why this is happening I'd greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks
    James

OK well I tried your suggestion in various ways...
I tried downgrading to WEP from WPA...
End result was the same problem.
I turned off security altogether and still got the same results, so it doesn't appear that the method of encryption has any effect on the behaviour.
Any other suggestions? Thanks for the help by the way

  • WRT54G keeps dropping wireless connections

Wired connection to the router works fine. But it drops all the wireless devices (PC, phone, tablet) multiple times each day, sometimes only 30-60 minutes after reconnecting. Power cycling the router "fixes" the router and allows reconnection. There are 2 topics in the FAQ section that looked helpful:
Getting poor or no signal from a wireless router
Top causes of dropping wireless connection on a Linksys router
but clicking on those does not bring up anything. Anyone know where to find those 2 FAQs? Any other ideas for what might be causing this?

Hi. You may need to do firmware upgrade on your router as is the case these days for legacy routers.  What is the hardware version by the way? You can find it at the bottom of the router right after the tiny print of the model. Access homesupport.cisco.com and search for the model. When you get the router's page click downloads below support sections and from there you have to select the hardware version, once you do that you will see the firmware version for the said hardware version. Usually it is a bin file when you save it and you can open that one on the router's page. Once you access your router's page go to Administration and click Firmware Upgrade and select the file you downloaded from the website. Make sure that you do this upgrade with a computer plugged-in to the router. When upgrade is done, you do a 30-second reset and unplug/replug the router also for 30 seconds. You may refer to this link http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=80&vw=1&articleid=4030.
As for the link for Getting poor or no signal from a wireless router, I found this one from Cisco's public kb site but not able to for the other one but I believe they are related.
    http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=d9a3b1b2039741948a2365b053a93ea8_3759.xml&pid=80&r...
Try to change channels as well on your router: you can try 1,3,6,9. Make sure the router is placed at least 3 feet above ground and check the antenna as well if it is still okay.

  • Dropped Wireless Network

I have a new MacBook Pro. I have configured it to connect to my home wireless network and set that network as the preferred network.
Every so often, can be as frequent as every few minutes, my MacBook Pro will drop my preferred network and connect to nothing else. I just lose all network connection. Re-selecting my network from the list re-establishes the connection. That connection may last for hours or minutes, then it will randomly drop it again, forcing me to manually re-selct it.
It does not auto connect, though it is configured to do so (and does at boot).
    Thoughts/suggestions?
My wireless router is a Linsys WRT54G, WEP encryption enabled, SSID Broadcast disabled.

    Hmm, interesting.

I have the same router, using WEP, and SSID, same problem (now resolved).
By chance, do you have Bootcamp installed? I was having trouble getting a wireless connection to my MBP. It seemed that the Linksys router wanted to be set up via Ethernet through Windows, because once I hooked up the cable, booted up in Windows XP on my MBP, went to the Linksys admin Web setup page, and entered all the right data, the router thereafter happily communicated through wireless to my MBP in both Windows XP and in Mac OS.
Don't know if it was coincidence or ?, but if you have Bootcamp and a Linksys, you might try going in through Windows to their Web setup page.
    Good luck.

  • PS2 Online & Random Drops

Hey everyone, hopefully we can finally fix this problem as it has been plauging my and my roommate for a little bit now.
We use a Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router.
This is our current Internet/Gaming setup:
    PC: Wired
    Xbox 360: WiredPS2: Wired
    PS3: Wireless
    Laptop: Wireless
Now, the PC, PS3, Laptop are always connected.  My roommates Xbox 360 and PS2 switch ethrtnet ports and uses the same cable whenever he wants to play one or the other online.
    Heres the problem:
Whenever we use the PS2 online to play (Specifically NCAA Football), we SOMETIMES get random drops.  This does not happen every use, but it seems to happen maybe once a week, or once every two weeks, and then sometimes frequently, it is very random.
We then shutdown my roommates laptop, which is running Windows Vista, and that seemed to stop a lot of the constant drops.  Something about Vista + Linksys Router + Game servers I read somewhere, did not like each other and caused problems.
Even after we did that, we are still getting random drops, not as many, and it's not good because the games are ranked, and my roommate gets the automatic loss for it.
This is what happens when we get dropped:
First the PS2 goes down, always this is the FIRST thing, then my PS3 usually goes down, then I have no internet on my PC, and that all lasts for about a minute, then everything kicks back online and is working properly again.
We have a Static IP on the PS2, as well as enabling the DMZ on the Linksys router to the PS2's static IP to allow everything to go in and come out of the PS2 for gaming.
Every setting I have checked on the router, looks good, both on the externally and internally.
Our connection speed and connectivity with other users is always very good.
We just get a little slow down on the PS2, then it drops, followed by everything else for about a minute, then it kicks back online.  We have looked at numerous forums, bought a different router (same problem), rearranged our setup, shorter ethernet cable, etc., just almost EVERYTHING we can think of.
One time we went about 70 games without a disconnect, then after that we got 2 the same night, then it would go two weeks without one.
    Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance for answers, I'll add any more additional information if asked.

Have you tried to upgrade the firmware of your Router. It seems that it might be the problem with your Routers Firmware. Try to upgrade the firmware of your Router and i think this might solve your problem..
Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads.........insert model no of your router in serach tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop...
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • Random Dropping and POOR CUSTOMER SUPPORT

So I've had this issue for about 2 years. Yeah, 2 years.
We've had countless calls with BT, countless emails etc. Nothing is working!
Whenever I call the BT centres now, I refuse to do these pointless tests, as they provide no accurate result, I also cannot explain what the situation is fully to them, because they don't understand me.
The internet will randomly drop once or so every five minutes, sometimes it'll be a full internet drop, or sometimes it'll be heavy packet loss. It happens on all devices, wired and wireless, desktop pc's to phones.
We've been given discounts on our packages, however they are useless discounts as we are still having major troubles connecting to the internet.
We've recently noticed a new occurrence, whenever our internet drops, we also lose connection to the hub settings manager. Bare in mind this happens on all devices at the same time. Lights on the hub remain blue, and the speeds on our hub settings page will also remain at 448kbps up and 7mbps down.
I'm really losing the remaining patience I have fast, the call centres don't have a clue what they're doing, today I was talking to the floor manager who even booted me offline to do a test without my approval, which I find unacceptable.
I also find it unacceptable that there is no English call centre, as, not being rude, but it's really hard to understand the foreign call centres, and they find it hard to understand you as well.
So, does anyone here have any resolutions to the internet drops, as we're out of ideas.
(bt claim that the line from the exchange to my hub is *totally* fine)

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
I understand your reluctance to do the test requested by CS but in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
    which hub do you have?
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal

  • MacBook Pro randomly drops Ethernet connection.

I use my new MacBook Pro both connected wirelessly and via Ethernet to my home network. My network is connected to ADSL via a firewall/gateway router. I have a Powerbook G4 and a WinXP machine running on this same network (wirelessly and wired) without any issues.
For some reason my new MacBook Pro, however, will randomly drop off the network and will often require a reboot to reacquire a DHCP address. At first, I noticed this when transferring large amounts of data to the laptop across the network (retiring my XP machine). I thought I may have a bad cable or bad port on my hub so I switched both. After a couple more transfers, however, the problem seems to have returned.
Mid transfer, the MBP will lose connectivity to the DHCP server and assign itself a 169 address. I am unable to reacquire a 192 address from DHCP and have to restart the MBP to get back on the network.
Needless to say, this is very annoying and not at all what I expected with my new MBP.
Any thoughts appreciated as I am at whits end on this one.

I am having a similar issue. I have not yet tested with standard Ethernet, only Wireless using WPA2.
I have 3 Macs (iBook G4, PowerMac G5, and MBP (Core 2 Duo) all connecting a private wireless network consisting of a Airport Extreme and an Airport Express using WDS. All computers and basestations are running the latest versions of their respective software (10.4.8, V5.7, V6.3)
ONLY the MBP has the following problems: dropping the connection, failing to reconnect after sleep, and failing to obtain an IP address via DHCP after connecting.
The signal power reported by both the menu-bar widget and the Internet Connect application varries continually on the MBP, even though it is sitting 2 feet from the Airport Extreme basestation. Sometimes full strength, sometimes only two bars.
I have removed all preferred networks from the Network system preferences and re-added only my network. I have also removed the passwords for the routers from my keychain.
The MBP will often-times simply drop it's connection. When it does that, it will not automatically reconnect to my network. If I put the MBP to sleep it often-times will not reconnect when it awakes either. Sometimes it does, but I cannot decern a pattern. If it does automatically reconnect it will usually not obtain an IP address from the basestation.
Simply toggeling the MBP's Airport off and then on will almost always get it to find my network and automatically connect. Even if it does connect to the network, it doesn't always obtain an IP address via DHCP. Again, if I simply toggel the MBP's Airport off and on then it will usually connect and obtain an real IP address.
All of these things happen within two feet of the basestation, as well as more than 20 feet away. Both other Macs continue working just fine even while the MBP is having problems.
This is not an issue with the basestations or my configuration. It must be a problem with the drivers for the Airport card in the MBP.
