BT Hub 2 Ethernet Connection Dropping

My apologies I have not posted before and there is probably already messages likes this but I had trouble finding them. I have a BT Hub 2 which I have had since March this year. Its connected by ethernet cable not wireless. I has lately become very slow although I was lead to believe that the speed in our area has been increased !
For the last 7 days my broadband constantly drops out and I am asked via BT connection pages to reset the hub anything up to 10 times a day as my broadband connection has been lost. I have called techincal help but dont seem to get very far. They just say its wireless interferance but how can it be I am NOT wireless I am via ethernet cable. I have done all they have suggested which is disconnect the whole thing and then reconnect and reset whenever I am asked, I have tested my phone line that appears okay, apparently there is no work on the lines being done in the area.  So I am at a loss but its driving me potty everytime I am online I get cut off and have to reset all over again to get back online.
Has anyone experienced this with Ethernet cables ? Is it worth me replacing the Hub ?
Many thanks for reading
Mel

Hi, thankyou for responding. Okay yes to the first I have just changed ethernet port this morning. No to the second not replaced teh cable as yet. Test results from the speed test are at the end of this message. So far I have not been disconnected since changing the port today, however it remains to be seen how long it lasts. If it happens again I will get a new ethernet cable out of the box and replace the current one. After that I am not sure whats next, replace whole hub I guess.
If yourself or anyone else can decipher the test results as to whether this is good or bad I would be grateful.

  • Home hub 3, broadband connection dropping

Hi, just a few days ago I recived my new home hub 3. The reason I wanted the upgrade from the hub 1 is because the broadband connection would drop and also the old hub would reset it self constantly.
The new hub is much better in terms of not resetting itself, if i try and watch something on 4od etc, youtube, it feels like any stress and the braodband connection drops, I had this on the old hub but it feels like its happening more now.
So much so I decided to make a paint version of my wiring so someone can maybe help me out.
    http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r173/guysy1110/routerproblem.png
Sorry the paint image came out much smaller than I wanted.
The main phone line is dowstairs in the lounge, its split into 2 using a 2 way splitter, one goes to the main phone which has a microfilter attached, the other plug leads up to the spare room and there a phone box (sorry not sure what its called) is in place, this box was split into another one because a long time ago there was a router that lived in the spare room (the split box is unused). Probably confusing people now, but the main box upstairs in the spare room is extended into my room and then a microfilter is used and then goes into the hub.
The extension cable is FAR too long, possibly 10m of cable wound up and tucked behind the drawers. Could this be a problem? I guess so.
So my main questions are, if both the router and main phone have new microfilters on, what other causes could keep my router dropping the broadband connection? the extension into my room is FAR too long possibly 10m which is wound up behind my drawers, first off im going to get a shorter cable.
Also the microfilter is closest to the hub, would it be better at the first source downstairs, or even in the spare room?
Any suggestions would be great. thanks.

Im reviving this thread, so far from the phone box upstairs Ive shortened the cable, It still goes into my room but now instead of having a ridiculous 15m amount of calbing unused Its a straight 3m from the other room to mine.
    This has slightly improoved things.
However the hub still suffers and drops the broadband connection when under "stress" when the phone rings it sometimes drops, and when downloading files it drops halfway through if the file is large which is a massive pain.
On the downstairs master socket I removed the facia and did a quiet line test on the inside socket, there was no noise. I used a corded phone. I wasnt sure if it mattered but I tested all other sockets using this method and none had any noise.
I phoned BT and was advised to take the hub closest to the master socket, but if i do this I have no wireless card in my PC so cannot connect, The obvious option is to get a wireless card but that will cost money. As will buying the power lines.
Any suggestions? I guess plugging the hub in downstairs and trying to connect to something is the best option.
    Any advice please?

  • My USB Ethernet connection drops when another USB device is plugged in?

I have a MacBook Air (Mac OS X 10.6.7 but it happened with older OS versions, too) and have a few issues with my wired ethernet connection. (through USB Ethernet adapter).
    1. When I have the USB adapter plugged in when I wake the MacBook Air up it won't be recognised (have to plug it in after wake up)
    2. (that is more annoying). When I have the Adapter connected and I plug in another USB device (like a USB stick) into the other slot, my USB EthernetConnection drops! Only once I unplug the adapter and plug it back in it works again.
Is there maybe a firmware upgrade that should be installed or something??
    Does anybody have an idea???
    Thanks

Hi, you can upgrade the Firmware for the wrt54g router under the system screen.
you will find the "upgrade Firmware" tab under the system screen.
Once the Firmware has been upgraded you can then reset the router by holding and pressing the reset on the back panel for 30seconds. And then reconfigure the router again.

  • Time Capsule ethernet connection drops when backup on Windows XP

    Hi,
I have my Time Capsule connected with ethernet cable to my computer (Windows XP Pro SP3) everything works just fine until I start a backup from the PC.
The disk is connected to my PC as a network drive and I use the softare Cobian for the backup.
The connection drops after few minutes (not even 12G) of backup and I then can't access to the Time Capsule or internet...nothing works anymore.
After a reboot I can access to the Time Capsule again.
DOES IT WORK WITH WINDOWS ?????

  • Ethernet connection dropping constantly..

My internet connection drops usually every hour using a ethernet cord. Even while I am in the middle of doing work it will turn off and I have to to reboot my MacBook to get back onto the internet. After rebooting it the internet works fine right away but shortly later it will drop. Thank you for anyone who has information on how to fix this!

    Good afternoon,
Thank goodness I have Win XP running under Parallels 5. That's the only way I can get Ethernet to keep working. I don't think it's hardware; I think it's OS X as you'll see below.
I'm a Mac newbie, but I consider myself at least reasonably computer savvy (actually got the Power User compliment from a software guy in my office) and can contribute this troubleshooting tidbit:
I had to edit some video off my company's server 2 days ago, and the Ethernet in OS X went from dropping to not being able to connect at all when I tried to hunt for the clips and open them off the server. I wasn't going to bring it in over Airport, so I used Win XP to put the clips in the Parallels Shared Folder so I could open them in iMovie. Aside: iMovie rocks! I've never edited video #1 and have now made 2 short videos with fades and some animated text with just 30 minutes in the iMovie tutorials.
Just to make sure they weren't coming over Airport when I imported them into the Parallels Shared Folder in Windows (both Airport and Ethernet showed connected with assigned IP's, etc in Network Preferences even when Ethernet wouldn't work in OS X), I shut Airport off. Windows was solid the whole time, and I pulled the clips in over Ethernet as planned. For what it may matter, the Ethernet port is in Shared Networking mode in Parallels.
Imagine, having to have Windows rescue OS X. Not what I expected when I went all in Apple from my Verizon Blackberry (to iPhone) and Dell laptop.
Glad to be aboard. Hope this helps.

  • Hub keeps resetting/connection drops

It's happening 2-3 times a day now. Connection quality deteriorates rapidly just before it happens.
This is not acceptable. Somebody from BT please help fix it.
And don't anybody dare tell me "just reboot it", that is not a fix, that does literally nothing to solve the actual problem, just relieves a symptom temporarily. There is an issue that needs to be resolved on a permanent basis that needs to be investigated fully.
If it's a problem with my hub, then I need a new hub that does its job. If it's a problem with my line, then an engineer needs to come and investigate & fix it. I'm connected via ethernet via Cat6 cabling, not wireless, and the disconnect definitely happens, as it says "Disconnected" when I visit my home hub (if it loads): http://192.168.1.254/

I believe this is a consumer forum, so BT will not necessarily take action unless the forum moderators get involved.
Have you been in touch with BT and complained to them?

  • Ethernet connection drops in and out

Please help me out, I am running an iMac 27 in, mid 2011. It was updated to Mavericks and from what I understand there were not connectivity issues at that time. Now I am having issues with randomly losing connection to my supervisor's computer, the external drives on the network and the internet all at the same time. I can usually immediately reconnect to my supervisor's computer, but my adobe programs, usually indesign, still crash because the "file was lost" or something to that effect. It is also causing some pretty big issues with updating DPS files. I spent an extremely unproductive afternoon with adobe support and some subsequent troubleshooting on my own pointed to the iMac or connectionbeing the issue. We have checked the ethernet jack, and it is not the issue. I would also like to mention that I am connected through an ethernet cable, that has also been recently replace. Has anyone run into this and been able to fix it? At this point even a temporary fix that I have to perform each morning before I start would be an improvement, and a productive step in the right direction.

Factory defaults, let it install with cisco connect. I did configure it myself before, but to rule out any and all user error I tried it with the tools Cisco shipped the router with. Even before installing the router with cisco dconnect, so with PURE factory defaults, it only delivered 65mb/s over 2.4ghz N
Again, there can't be any missconfiguration if nothing is configured. I took the liberty to google some more about this router, and it seems there are a lot of people reporting bad range/speed.
I'm just going to RMA this and see if a new one will do better.

  • Ethernet Connection Randomly Dropping w/ AirPort Extreme Router

My wired ethernet connection drops sometimes randomly, but I think it tends to do it more if I'm in an audio chat with someone on iChat (not sure). Here is my setup:
FiOS ISP (always been reliable in the past) -> AirPort Extreme (router) -> Cisco gig-e switch (reliable) -> 2008 Mac Pro running Snow Leopard (no I do not use wifi) (my computer) -> Internet sharing to my brother's computer via ethernet port 2 (set up after the new router was installed, but problem happened without it)
It seemed to start doing this once I switched the router to AirPort Extreme. We were using the one Verizon gave us, a junky Actiontec router that was messing with our DNS and port forwardings but wasn't dropping my computer's connection randomly.
I have it set to use DHCP. When it drops, other things have connection, just not my computer. It drops for about 30 seconds then comes up. I've already tried rebooting the router and the switch. I suspect that something is funny with the DHCP because I rarely get the message that my computer's name has already been taken (by itself!), which has always happened even with the old router. Nothing is stealing my address. Anything else I should try?

    Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

  • I am unable to set up my new Time Capsule with my BT Home Hub - every time i connect the ethernet cable from Wan port to Home Hub, the internet signal drops

    Hi there -
I've just purchased a new Time Capsule, and would like to set up a small home network with my Laptop, iMac and wireless printer. I'm following the first steps, but as soon as I connect an ethernet cable between the WAN port of the TC and the ethernet port of the HH, my BT internet connection drops out and I have to restart the HH. Upon which point it drops out again. The airport utility can see my TC, and gets as far as me typing in the new network name and setting up a password, but then it can't quite get through to the next stage. All the time it's just flashing amber.
    Please help!

Setup the TC in bridge mode before you cannot it to the HH.
Simply do the setup fully in isolation. And do it by ethernet.
Setup wireless to create a wireless network.
You can use either same SSID =Wireless name as the HH .. same security same password.
Or use a different name and setup.. totally up to you.
Update the TC and then plug it into the HH by ethernet.

  • USB Disk via USB Hub or Ethernet NAS Connection More Reliable?

This is a rather techical question that calls for an opinion.
I want to centralize backups for my daughter, wife and myself.  I'm going to add the latest model Airport Extreme Base Station as both an internet access point (from my cable modem) and as a wireless router to hard drive storage.  I know there are cheaper (and probably faster) wireless routers; however, I've used various models of airport base stations over the years with my cable modem and they have all worked flawlessly and never need rebooting.
My two choices:  1) Connect a 4-port, powered USB hub to the usb connection on the Airport Extreme and use a pair of 3GB hard drives--one for primary backup and the second for the backup of the backup.  2) Use a QNAP TS110 or TS112 NAS device and connect it to the Base Station via gigabit ethernet.  Then, an external USB drive would be connected to the QNAP NAS device.  I've encountered QNAP NAS products in my work life and have been incredibly impressed with them--reliable, very low power requirements, reasonably easy setup via Web browser.
Choice 1 will be about $125 less expensive than Choice 2.  I'll have to use the Linux Ext3 or 4 partition map for both drives under Choice 2 but the external USB volume can be formatted in Mac HFS+.  Choice 2 will be theoretically faster because of the gigabit ethernet connection (probably irrelevant because of the slow wireless n throughput) but the QNAP device can be set to do automated backups to the USB drive that would be connected to it.  That's nice.
My question:  Based on what I've read over the years about connecting USB disks to an Airport Extreme base station, I have the opinion that an ethernet connection to an NAS device may be more reliable (ie, the client computers don't drop the connection to the hard drive as often).  Maybe I'm wrong about that.  I would like an opinion.
Also, I know how slow the real throughput will be as a result of clients connecting via wireless n.  In real life, with decent quality connections, I'll be looking at 10MB to 12MB per second max.  The first backups will take days; however, subsequent incremental backups will be much faster.  I don't plan to use Time Machine, but rather to use Carbon Copy Cloner to make backups to read/write sparse disk image bundles (CCC won't do regular backups to networked drives).  I tried Time Machine a while back but would rather have access to actual files as as a complete disk image that would be bootable when written back to a drive.  Call me old-fashioned, but that's me.  I also have two other bootable backups on 2.5" external drives--one that stays with me and another is always at my work place.  Also, I'm not interested in a Time Capsule because I don't think their reliability is all that great (bad design with too much heat buildup).
Thanks for any insights you can offer.

I meant to say 3TB drives, not 3GB.

  • E3000 severe drop in speed from ethernet connection to wireless

I have an E3000 connected to COMCAST. My download speed with an Ethernet connection to my computer (Windows 7) is just over 60Mbbs. When I connect to the internet using wireless only (computer adjacent to the router), my download speed drops 50% or more. Is this normal or is there some setting adjustment I need to make? I just loaded the most recent firmware for the E3000,

Its best to check speeds on wired LAN cables as there are many factors that contribute to bad results on WiFi. Different WiFi device may exhibit slower than expected results.

  • Time capsule keeps dropping ethernet connection to BT Voyager every minute

I have just bought a 1TB TC to get the benefit of better wireless and the backup facility all in one. Previously I used a BT Voyager 2110 as ADSL modem and wireless router. I have set up the TC to connect from the WAN port to the LAN port on the BT router, put TC in bridge mode, and disabled wireless on the BT voyager. This means the BT Voyager does all the DCHP config and PPPoA, transmits this to the TC via ethernet and then TC broadcasts this on wireless. So far so good.
The TC works with this ok, but for whatever reason keeps losing the ethernet connection every minute or so. Literally almost flickering from amber light ('ethernet cable unplugged' for about 1-2 seconds) then back to green light sometimes several times a minute. This means I get no continuous or stable connection, e.g. for downloading/gaming online. The same happens if the BT router is in bridge mode and the TC configures the PPPoA itself - it has to 'renegotiate' every minute or so, which is very frustrating.
The ethernet cable is fine (I have tried two different cables), and each works with no problem if iMac is connected to TC (no internet though obviously), or if iMac is connected via LAN to the router for direct internet access - the network settings in system preferences shows no similar frequent loss of connection. The problem only seems to arise as between BT router and TC via ethernet. I have done resets of both the TC and the router, both are on the latest firmware updates as well so I am now at a loss. If anyone can help it would be really appreciated! Thanks.

Hi there, thanks for your quick reply.
Well I'm not actually trying to get the TC to do that function, merely to wirelessly broadcast what has been negotiated by the BT Router. I.e. the router is not a bridge letting the TC do the work, but rather the router has all the settings and then this is just fed down the ethernet, just like it would be to a computer.
Connection settings have always been 'connect using' ethernet, and 'connection sharing' is off (bridge mode).
The thing is that this config clearly does work as I can get internet access, but I can't work out why the ethernet connection is dropped so frequently (and at all) which means I have no stable connection.
I have tried changing the router to PPPoE, which still gives me internet access but does not resolve the problem of the ethernet connection being dropped.

  • Airport Express Continuously Drop Ethernet Connection

    Hi:
I have an Airport Express (802.11n) with the latest update software available (7.4.2) and I running my iMac with Snow Leopard (also with the latest software actualization). Since a few weeks ago the device has been dropping the ethernet connection every now and then without any error or malfunction of the software.
I already try almost everything including reset the device and configure a new WiFi net. In some reviews and forums that I have been investigating says that maybe is a firmware (?) problem.
If anybody has the same problem and found the way to solve it I really appreciate the answer to this issue.
    Thanks.

I had this happen with a new box. One glorious moment it worked first time and then it started doing what you described but hard on! See this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2164508 . Finally solved by getting a replacement from the store!

  • Dropped commands via ethernet connection

    Hello,
I seem to have commands dropped whenever I use ethernet connections as opposed to GPIB or RS232. I do not know if it is due to timing but depending on the instrument the more frequent the dropped commands occur. If I highlight the execution, I see the data flow as expected and commands. I have tried placing timeouts before and after/delays in between commands, even *OPC, to make sure the operation is complete before moving on to the next command.
This question is very general for very specific pieces of instruments but I am convinced it is due to the ethernet connection and my understanding of the timing of commands.
    Thanks,
    Christian

Some instruments just need time to process commands before they can accept any more.  The Ethernet tends to send data faster, but also has a higher latency.  You could be running into this latency issue.  In general, you should have waits between commands just for allowing the instrument to process it, regardless of the communication bus.

  • Infinity 2 BT Home Hub 3 connection dropping issue...

    Hello,
For over 2 months now I have been experiencing problems with our Home Hub 3 restarting and dropping the connection.
It car happen up to 6 times an hour or may be OK for up to 12 hours.
We have had 3 new HH3 routers, three engineer visits, numerous speed checks, line checks (all OK) and calls to 08001114567. As of today nothing has resolved the issue.
I have changed channel, have Openreach Modem & HH3 powered via a UPS, all connections have been checked and all leads changed. I have now lost all confidence in both Level 1 & Level 2 helpdesk. I am considering buying a non BT router to see if that overcomes the issues, but I don't see why I should have to, as I pay for a service from BT which I am not receiving.
    Can anyone offer any advise.

HarrisonStephens infinity does not use ADSL filters just a filtered master socket installed by Openreach when infinity is installed
