BT Hub 4 & Hub 3 repeater

I have infinity in my 3 storey house, im getting 78mb which is fantastic but the hhb 4 is in the living room. My ps3 & pc is up on 3rd floor. I recently bought powerline adapters which work fanstic but my iphone 5 doesnt pick up the wifi that far up. I dont want to have to spend more money buying the powerline wifi adapters, can i use my old hhb 3 on top floor to increase the wifi range?

You could add a network switch to the powerline adapter on the 3rd floor, and plug your old home hub 3 into it, plus anything else, like the PC.
This guide may help.
Link BT two home Hub 3s together and extend your wireless to another location.
Just use the settings as described, for the remote home hub 3.

  • Hub 4 Repeatedly Demands Set-Up of Parental Contro...

I've recently started using a Hub 4. It works fine, however whenever I, or more usually a visitor, connects a device to it for the first time (typically wirelessly) the user is unable to browse until they have fought their way past some parental control set-up pages.
When I first started using the Hub 4 I went through the same process - reluctantly - using my one and only machine, and thought that was it, for the Hub, for the remainder of eternity. It is very annoying for people using other devides to have to repeat the process and I was wondering whether other users have had the same problem, whether there is a way of avoiding it in future, and whether the behaviour manifested is the result of a bug, or an ill-considered design feature. Incidentally sometimes I have had to input my BT account user name and password in order to get the parental control screens to go away.
    Thanks in anticipation.

Many thanks for the last posting. As you correctly anticipated the problem was that Smart Setup was turned on, and I have now turned it off.
I don't think I'd have worked out the solution very easily myself. The existence of this, er, facility isn't obvious, and no manual was provided.
By the way, the forum applications may not be working correctly: despite checking the 'Email me when someone replies' box no such e-mail arrived :-(.
    Thanks again.

  • Mac Mini and USB 2.0 hubs (hubs stop working within a month)

I have an aluminum Mini running OSX 10.6.6 (Snow Leopard). With only 4 USB ports, I have need of a USB hub to accommodate my external drives and other peripherals: keyboard/mouse, camera and iPhone have to use the existing ports in the Mini (difficult access to ports due to space limitations), leaving one port for up to 4 external drives (older drives 40-60gb used for backup and extra storage).
I have problems using powered USB 2.0 hubs with this computer; I have 'burned out' 2 hubs since buying the Mini in February. They just flat out stop working, though they still show power (the power indicator light on the hubs); no peripheral is recognized when plugged into the hub (which worked fine for about a month). I can unplug the 'must use Mini ports' (camera, iPhone, charger, etc) and the peripheral drives are recognized and work normally when plugged directly into the Mini ports.
One hub was a Belkin 4-port hub (about 1 year old) and the other was a GE 3-port hub with several flash card readers (19-in-1 card reader), also about a year old. Is there any reasonable explanation why powered hubs would suddenly stop working, related to use with the Mac Mini 2010 aluminum version?
I had worse problems with the USB ports in an old (~2006) Mac Mini (out of warranty), where the USB ports in the Mini stopped working, which is partly why I bought the new mini. In light of this tidbit, (be honest, please) are there known issues with Mac Minis and USB?

Each of the external drives has its own power supply; I generally only use one drive at any one time, but on rare occasions I have powered up more than one to confirm or transfer files. I don't leave any of those drives on when not in use, and when everything is working I properly eject/unmount them before turning them off.
There have been times when I powered up a drive connected to a powered hub and both the hub and the drive indicated activity but the drive didn't mount. On those occasions the drives sometimes would not appear in Disk Utility, and other times would appear, but would not be "mountable". I didn't know what the best way to deal with that was, so I would just turn the drive off, hoping the lack of mounting on the desktop meant no real drive activity was occurring and I wouldn't risk data loss or drive damage. So far all the drives seem to work fine when plugged directly into the back of the mini.
The main external hard drive I was using when the Belkin hub failed (iomega 40g) is USB 2.0 only (no firewire). I have another drive that is only firewire (la cie 60g)... so it wasn't a factor. Two other external drives are ACOM, one 40g one 120g, and then there's my old iMac G5 disk (display fizzled and everything but the disk recycled through Apple's recycling program) which is mounted in an external enclosure and is part of the USB contingent, but is not being used for anything but backup (all three both USB 2 and FW400 capable). (I know, too many toys... but why throw them out?)
The USB hubs both had their own power supplies, too, and I never used them without power (though I tried it as part of troubleshooting, before reading the Apple article on USB and power requirements). Other USB devices that only work when plugged into the mac directly are my Epson Stylus CX4800 all-in-one, and my Radio Shark.
So, whaddya think? Should I risk buying another powered USB hub or just live with plugging in peripherals to one available USB port (through a short USB 2.0 extension) and only use one at a time? That would be a bit of a pain, but if there are no issues you've heard of with Mac USB ports (several unanswered questions in the Mini Support forums here involving USB and peripherals, I noticed), what else would explain the seemingly short lives of USB hubs?
Oh, here's something I just remembered: the last time the Belkin hub was working (last night), I had my Radtech BT mouse charger cable plugged in (not charging, mouse not attached) along with two of the external hard drives, and my Fuji camera USB cable. I got an error message onscreen (on the Mini) that a drive had been improperly ejected (or put away?), yet the hard drive in question was still mounted on the desktop. I looked at the hub, and the loose ends of the charger and the camera USB cable were touching. Could that have caused the error (and maybe the hub to fail)? (Edit: the camera cable I think was plugged into the mini's one available port; 3 external drives and the mouse charger were plugged into the hub, _but only one drive powered up and in use (3rd edit)_. The camera end of its USB cable contacted the mini-plug end of the mouse charger... could that have short-circuited the hub? +That wouldn't explain the failure of the GE hub a couple weeks before... but I don't know if any of this is connected, so to speak--2nd edit.+)

  • Connecting 2 home hubs across long distance wirele...

We are renovating a house. The phone line and HH3 are sited in a shed/office 60-100 feet away from the house. We ran a separate power line underground from the house so the electrical circuits in the house independent to the office/shed. I may move the phone line into the house but, as it stands, I need to connect a second HH inside the house, plugged into the phone line but I hear there could be complicated connection issues.
I do have a Netgear range extender that plugs into the electrical circuit but given they are independent would this work?
Can someone advise me, please. Must I use a second BT hub or another make? If so, must it the same HH3?
I have checked the Home Hub folder and cannot find any mention of a 'slave' router.

A home hub cannot repeat a wireless signal without a direct cable.
BT have a number of solutions on this page BT Connected Home
Provided the shed is still fed from the same house distribution box, then Powerline adapters normally work fine.
Ideally, you could run an Ethernet cable out to the shed, as that would work the best.

  • Shouldn't I have a free upgrade to hub 5?

I have been on Infinity 2 for a long time and have the hub 4. When my contract came near the end around 3 months ago I got a call from BT during which they recontracted me for another 12 months, however, they failed to mention that I was eligible for a free upgrade to the new hub 5. Although I get great wirelkess speeds when I am in the same room as the hub, the connection becomes iffy even when I am only one floor up and regularly drops connection when I play an online game (which rarely happens when I am in the same room as the hub). The internal walls of the house are regular wooden panels, nothing that should breakdown wireless signal.
I've read good reviews of the new hub and was wondering if it would greatly improve wireless range. To be fair, I can get connection even when I am on the top floor (a floor further up) but when you are connected to Infinity and also have supposedly good hub (hub 4), you really should be able to use wireless devices anywhere in the house or garden without breakages.

BT do not offer the hub automatically, and you may have to pay something towards it.
Wireless is unlikely to be any better on the HH5, and some people say its worse. You would be best using either an Ethernet cable, or broadband extenders.

  • DMVPN: HUB's behind a LoadBalancer and Spoke-Spoke communication

    Hallo,
we are planning a scaling DMVPN network for around 2000 spokes.
Is it possible to install the HUB's behind a Load Balancer so that they are reachable only through 1 VIP address and ALSO the possibility of a direkt spoke-spoke communication when needed?
I only found Phase 2 and SLB for HUBs but
    without a spoke-spoke communication.
    http://www.cisco.com/application/pdf/en/us/guest/products/ps6658/c1161/cdccont_0900aecd80313ca3.pdf
see page 13 there is what we like to have but with the extension of spoke-spoke communication.
    regards
    Karlheinz

I have been waiting for Cisco to get the spoke-spoke functionality working for this DMVPN HUBs behind load balancer environment. The traditional DMVPN with multiple HUBs does not really scale well, plus it is not very stable routing and NHRP wise.
Would you care to tell more about your solution. As far as I know on a HUB you cannot have one tunnel for spoke to HUB connections and the other just for HUB-HUB, the NHRP requests from the spokes to find out about the other spoke public IP will not be forwarded between the tunnel interfaces on the HUB

  • Leaving BT, but what about my hub?

What happens to my Hub & hub phones.
Do I have to send them back or do I keep hold of them?
Not much point in me hanging onto them, but BT have said nothing about me handing them back.
Can anyone give me the official line please.
    Cheers JR

That does not sound right to me. The homehub 1.0 is obsolete so it must have been installed a few years ago.
It would be classed as electrical waste and come under the WEEE regulations. BT have offered to dispose of it at your cost, which seems a bit odd.
You should be able to get a freepost BT returns label from BT by dialling 150 and saying you have some unused equipment to return.
It would normally go back to a special returns centre for disposal or re-use. However I found this little snippit while Googling.

  • BT Hub phone

Hi, I'm having trouble with my Hub Phone - it says searching for hub. this has been going on for a few days, I have tried registering it but it says unavailable. Can someone help please.

    Hi Ian,
Please try the following steps: -
    1. Check for the Hub & Hub phone version i.e Home Hub 2.0 A or B and for Hub Phone 2.1 A or B (as if used with different versions it wont work)
2.Restart both the Hub Phone as well as Home Hub.
    3. Login to the GUI of the Home Hub by going to the following URL i.e 192.168.1.254 by typing the same in the address bar of your browser.
4.Check if it asks you to reset the default admin password, if yes than change the default password coz the error 500 that you are getting is caused for the same reason.
5.After changing the password login to www.bt.com/bbv and register your bbtalk service with the help of your bbtalk phone no. and password. The phone light should be glowing by now after the configuration is successful.
If after doing all the above steps still unsuccessful than try a hard reset to default on your home hub and follow the steps again, i am sure the issue will be resolved.
    Keep me posted.
    Regards,
    Avi

  • Hard drive / hub

I got a Belkin USB hub, recently I bought a firewire Lacie Hard drive. I want to connect my HUB hub into the USB input at the back of the hard drive. The USB output from the hub is a mini one, and the HUB input of the HD is not the "rectangular" one, but more of a square... I think is hi-speed 2.0?
Went to radio shack and got a usb cable/adapter, that has like 5 dif USB adaptors, so I got the mini for the output of the hub and the "square" for the back of HD, which is connected to my MBP via firewire.... the problem is that my hub doesnt work when I do this... like if its not being recognized... why?... I cant do this? (hub to hard drive) or is a problem of the adapter?
Thanks in advance for your help and advice!!

    jaykay06,
If I'm reading your post correctly, you are attempting to connect your HD directly to your MBP via the HD's Firewire interface, then connect the USB hub to the HD via the HD's USB interface. You think that you should then be able to connect other peripherals to the hub. Correct?
No, this won't work. The USB interface on your HD is only intended to connect the HD directly to a computer. It is not intended to be used for "daisy chaining" other devices, and it won't work that way. Your HD can be connected to a computer using either the Firewire interface or the USB interface, but not both at the same time.
The only configuration between the two devices you have (the HD and the hub) that would work would be to use the HD's USB interface to connect via USB to the hub, then connect the hub to your MBP. Obviously, this would circumvent the HD's Firewire interface altogether, and I doubt that you could then "daisy chain" any other Firewire devices from the HD.

  • Odd hub log entry

i was playing and online game earlier tonight and all of a sudden i got disconnected when i finally managed to get my pc to connect up to my router (i hade to remove the phone cable and perform a power cycle as simple restart button wasnt enough) i found the following log entries in the machine

at the same time sa the first entry was made my 2 wondows vista pc's we cut off from the router
and at the same time as the secodn entry my 2 win xp pc's were cut off as well
it took me a while to get everythign reconected to the internet but i cant seem to find any reason for what has happend
i realsie its an intrusion detection log entry but it means nothing to me and trying to google for it returned a lot of nonsence about p2p programs but nothing that matched the entries
should prolly mention i have a V2(A) home hub
    Hub Firmware Information
    Current firmware
    Version 8.1.H.J (Type A)
    Last updated
    28/01/10
so am kinda hoping this is the lastest update
any ionfo on what just happend would be nice and also why the wireless keeps getting turned on when this stuff happens (i have it turned off since i dont have anythign i need connectiong wirelessly)

There is an issue with some older versions of the home hub which causes loss of connection if the IDS events fill up the internal memory.
This causes loss of DNS, which can be fixed by clearing the IDS logs. I thought this problem had been fixed in later firmware releases.
On my old home hub I run a script to clear the IDS logs at regular intervals, which sorts the problem out.
The alternative is to reboot the hub.

  • Connecting a scanner with USB Hub

Configuration: Scanner (Epson 7000 GT), printer (Canon 6200 S) are connected to a USB-Hub. The Hub ist connected to one of my macs (mini with 1,25 GHz oder G4 with DP 867 GHz).
When I don't use a hub there are no problems.
Scanning with the mini through the hub does work, when the hub is connected to the rear USB-port. Connecting to the hub through the keybord-hub (hub to hub), preview-scanning works. But doing the real scan fails. Only a twinkling status bar comes up and stays.
Using the G4 and the hub, Image Capture does not even find the scanner, no matter, which USB-port I use. But the scanner can be found in the System Informations.
With Gentoo-Linux on the G4, scanning and printing work perfectly. No matter, if I use a hub or not, so it is NOT a hardware issue!
Anyone who has the same problems?

If I waa you, I'd do a research on USB 3 scanners - here is some interesting info:

  • Inconsistant and unreliable TC when using USB hub

I have a 500 GB Time Capsule, and have a Sitecom USB hub connected to it. On the USB hub are 2 external HDs, totalling to 3 partitions externally, plus the 500GB internal HD. I also connect either a Sandisk SD card reader or a Sandisk USB stick to it.
Now, I just got the Time Capsule, gave it to my dad as a birthday present, and have just set the whole thing up. The thing is, it works well as a wireless router, but I cannot seem to get the USB connectivity working properly. When I try to access one of the USB-drives (be it a HD, card reader or USB stick), the thing crashes, the iMac freezes, and I have to restart both. The thing is, that it does not always does this. Sometimes it works fine, other times I have to enter my password and user name up to 3 times before it works, and even other times the TC just stares at me with a blank expression going "you want me to do WHAT NOW?!"
In other words, it is unreliable with the USB hub. The hub has always worked fine while attached directly to the iMac, but because I want to be able to use the external HDs with my laptop as well, I have descided to get them in the network.
Does anyone know what causes this behavior?

Even the TC can work with external USB hub, it's not very reliable, and I would not recommend it. In theory, USB hub should be transparent, but I don't think the Apple engineers have ever fully tested it. I think when you have two or more drives connected to the TC, TC has problem allocate system resources correctly internally.
My recommendation for the external USB drive configuration is to have just ONE single drive, with ONE single partition, either FAT or HFS+. USB hub should be fine but restrict it to just one drive, use HUB hub for printer seems to be fine, but then you are only allowed one printer per TC anyway.

  • Using an old BT Hub 4 to repeat the wireless signa...

    Hi all - Newbie alert
I've been having an issue with my wireless connection for a good while and have been promised lots of times that upgrading to a newer hub would resolve them. It means I have gone from a Home Hub 3 to a 4 and now have upgraded to Infinity uptp 80mb with a home hub 5.
I had an engineer out today who advised it would be possible to connect the hub 4 or 3 as an extender by putting some settings into the hub.
Can anyone help me with which settings i'd need to change and too what?
    Very grateful for any help.
    Thanks
    Kath

You would have to connect them together using an Ethernet cable. The HH4 cannot act as a wireless repeater.
    This connection guide may help.
    http://forumhelp.dyndns.info/wireless/hh3link.html
It should work for the HH4.
The other alternatives would be to use one of the BT solutions.

  • Can Airport extreme be used as a repeater from the BT home hub

can Airport extreme be used as a repeater from the BT home hub because my laptop will be very far away and i currently get a rubbish signal on my Windows pc so when i upgrade to the mac pro i am wonderimg if i could use the airport extreme as a repeater to strenthen my already rubbish signal??

You might want to check with BT to see if they have a device to do what you want.
Using wireless only, the AirPort Extreme will only "extend" or "repeat" the wireless signal if it has been produced by another Apple router. It is not compatible with routers from other suppliers for this purpose.
