BT in a Parallel World

    Sometimes I think BT exists in Parallel World. Reading Ian's Update in the November issue of BT today (pensioner edition) all is well with BT, everything is functioning well ! He mentions delivering excellent customer service. I wonder if Ian Livingston ever bothers to peruse the problems that are posted on this forum and appreciate what customer sevice is like in the real world !
    Mind you BT today has allways reported everything within BT as the "best thing since sliced bread"
Studon

Hi studon.
Good points.
I think the trouble is that even if he reads every post on these forums, what he will see is the total number of complaints is a very tiny minority compared to the total number of BT customers.
Thats no help to the customer with the complaint!!

    I want to use QuickBooks for my very small bussiness, the recommendation from my accountant was QuickBooks (Windows). I just do not understand enough to decide whether to buy QuickBooks for Apple or Windows and use it in the Parallels world?

    QuickBooks for Mac has been available again since at least 2004 (Intuit before that had done nothing with it for years). The current version is QB for Mac 2014. It's pretty much the same price no matter where you look.
    The Mac version data is not directly compatible with the Windows version. Sending your data out to your business tax accountant and getting it back in is not at all easy. It's such a pain, our accountant comes here to finalize the books at year end.
    There is still also a lot of Windows features for QB Pro which have never been added to the Mac version. They're all on the higher end side that larger businesses would need. I've never run into anything with the Mac version I couldn't do.
    If your accountant wants ease of data transfer, then you'd be better off purchasing Snow Leopard Server and run that in Parallels. Then run the Windows version of QB in that.

  • Two Apple ID's and the cloud future

    I am hoping that someone can help me understand what the future will hold for my "Apple ID" situation.  I still use my original Apple ID that was set up in the early days to purchase music through the iTunes store.  This is still my AppStore ID, iTunes Store ID and the main way that Apple recognizes me for support, etc.  All of my family's devices (laptops, iPods, iPads, and iPhones access the iTunes Store and App Store using this ID).
    But when MobileMe started, I purchased a Family account that we now all use to sync our individual data, and share calendars through Mobile Me.  In the near future, when the iCloud service begins, will the fact that I have these two Apple ID's effect the way that and we "auto-update" all or our devices with software updates, but at the same time sync our music, photos (via photostream) and use the future imessage service, etc?
    So far these two parallel worlds have functioned well, but I have no idea what will happen when there is more sharing of data from both worlds...
    I know that its my fault for having these two Apple ID's, and that they cannot be consolidated, but I'm real confused at how they will all "get along"??

    I recommend sending this feedback up to Apple. This site is a user-to-user site. No Apple employees really pay attention to this.

  • Can't open Office attachments bet mac and pc (note my alias)?

    I often e-mail myself Word attachments from my work pc to my home mac (to edit in the evenings), and then e-mail the attachment back to myself to open the next day at work. This used to work seamlessly. It doesn't anymore. (The .doc extension is included.)
    Instead, I get a "File conversion" dialog box asking me to "Select the encoding that makes your document readable." The three choices are Windows, MS-DOS and Other encoding:. The "other" then has a scroll menu with a bunch of languages, from Arabic to Western European (DOS, ISO, Mac, Windows).
    What's Up? Any way around this? BTW, I've been avoiding the whole bootcamp/parallels world out of philosophical/paranoid principles about maintaining the Windows-free integrity of my new MacBook...

    Welcome to the discussions!
    The fact that it worked, but it doesn't anymore means something has happened to interrupt this procedure.Remember if there was an update or something done that will explain it. As for the workaround I always saved as .RTF to avoid such troubles and it hasn't (yet) failed me.

  • Why Oracle dropped support of JavaFX on ARM devices?

    Why Oracle dropped the support of JavaFX on ARM devices? Release note: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/jdk-8u33-arm-relnotes-2406696.html
    Im studing JavaFX for a commercial project with Raspberry, but, this news changed everything.

    I am asking the same question, and I am very disappointed with the lack of communication from ORACLE.
    I have spent a lot of time to learn JavaFX from 1.1 version and I was very enthusiastic about the new start of JavaFX 2.0 and the "promises" that came with it.
    And today, after 2 years, the only thing we can do seriously with JavaFX is building a desktop application !
    - Building a Web application is theoretically possibly but is a mess in the real world (JRE version, plugin, certificate, ...)
    - Building an application for the mobile world is not completed yet. It remains a lot of work, and no roadmap can give us a vision of the future. Moreover, with politics and courts problems between Oracle and Google and Apple, future of JavaFX is opened to doubt.
    - And now if ARM support is dropped ...
    The only way that remains partially clear is that JavaFX will replace Swing. But that would be a big waste and an enormous disappointment if it was the case.
    If only Oracle could communicate on its strategies ...
    During this time, in a parallel world, Javascript, HTML, and CSS are growing and eating all the devices ...
    Best regards

  • World Wide Telescope and Parallels

    Greetings,
    I am using Windows XP SP3 with Parallels 3.0 build 5584. Recently Microsoft released the spring beta of the World Wide Telescope (http://www.worldwidetelescope.org/ExperienceIt/ExperienceIt.aspx?exp=true). This is a wonderful astronomy program, however it crashes within Parallels. To run it, I have to enable Direct X Shaders (experimental) under the video options.
    It runs fine on Windows only machines. Anyone else experience this? Is there a way to fix this problem?
    Anyone know if an OS X version of this will be released?
    Thanks,

  • Mouse coord to virtual world - Parallel projection

    Hi,
    I've been able to do it in Perspective projection the code above. Why does'n it work the same with Parallel projection? The point where new geometry is added doesn't correspond to the mouse point on screen...
    public Point3d getCanvasPtToVworldPt(int x, int y) {
    if(view.getProjectionPolicy()==View.PERSPECTIVE_PROJECTION){
    Point3d VworldPt = new Point3d();
    Point3d centerEyePt = new Point3d();
    // convert the canvas point to ImagePlate coords
    cv.getPixelLocationInImagePlate(x, y, VworldPt);
    // transform the point from an imageplate coordinate to a Vworld
    // coordinate
    Transform3D imagePlateToVworld = new Transform3D();
    cv.getImagePlateToVworld(imagePlateToVworld);
    imagePlateToVworld.transform(VworldPt);
    cv.getCenterEyeInImagePlate(centerEyePt);
    imagePlateToVworld.transform(centerEyePt);
    double alpha = 0.0;
    if (VworldPt.z != centerEyePt.z) {
    alpha = centerEyePt.z / (VworldPt.z - centerEyePt.z);
    Point3d planePt = new Point3d(
    centerEyePt.x - alpha * (VworldPt.x - centerEyePt.x),
    centerEyePt.y - alpha * (VworldPt.y - centerEyePt.y),
    0.0); //centerEyePt.z - beta * (VworldPt.z - centerEyePt.z )
    return planePt;
    thanks

    Hi,
    I am unsure of what you mean by perspective and parallell projection. I am relatively new to Java3D and am unfamiliar with these terms.
    I think I am trying to solve a similar problem to you so maybe we can help each other as I suspect both our answers relate to [Transform3D|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17802_01/j2se/javase/technologies/desktop/java3d/forDevelopers/J3D_1_3_API/j3dapi/index.html].
    In my case, I am simply trying to move a point in the scene. I am able to get this to work when in top down view and the default zoom. However, when the scene is rotated or scaled the coordinates do not match up. Is this the same issue you are dealing with?
    The Transform3D has a 4x4 matrix that I believe stores the current views "translations, rotations, and scaling and shear effects". If we are able to understand this matrix then we should be able to perform some math to match up the coordinates.
    If this isn't the issue you are dealing with, I apologise for the response but things seem to move slowly on this forum.

  • What is the difference between OSX 10.6 and 10.6 server? I need to install Snow Leopard in a Parallels VM and it only allows 10.6 server. Will Rosetta work if I use the server edition?

    I MUST use an app that was discontinued which requires Rosetta, yet I also want to upgrade to Mavericks. I was told that Parallels and VMWare Fusion both support running Snow Leopard SERVER, but not Snow Leopard. Two questions: Will Rosetta run on Snow Leopard Server when it is running inside the Parallels/Fusion/whatever virtual machine which is running under Mavericks? The second question is: Is there any problem with running any specific software in Snow Leopard Server when it is set up this way?

    Richard Cartledge wrote:
    The problem with client as virtualised OS is the Apple EULA, not a technical one.
    I don't know if it works, or you're just not meant to do it.
    PS. If you download or have Snow Leopard DVD, you can install Rosetta in later OSs, certainly Lion and Mountain Lion and Mavericks.
    insert your Snow Leopard disc, open the Optional Installs folder on that disc, and double-click the Optional Installs.mpkg package. The Installer will open and you’ll be prompted to click Continue a couple of times and then choose a destination for the installation. Choose your startup volume and click Continue yet again.
    In the Custom Install on “nameofvolume” window that appears, enable the Rosetta option and click Continue. In the next window click Install to do just that.
    NB/ I don't have any old software to test to see if it actually makes it work!
    WRONG TWICE!
    Bad idea to attempt to install Rosetta into Lion, Mt. Lion or Mavericks and good luck trying to remove it after that attempt.  Result: NO powerpc app will run after that installation and you will have to complete a wipe of your hard drive and a complete pre-Rosetta install to get rid of Rosetta!
    It was a common Urban Myth that the Snow Leopard EULA prohibited its virtualization in Lion or Mt. Lion on a Mac.  That myth has been largely debunked over the last two years.
    In addition, Apple's release of Snow Leopard Server at a 95% discount ($20) has rendered the issue largely moot!
    OP: what application are we talking about here?
    For example here is the long beloved powerpc application Appleworks running in Snow Leopard Server installed in Parallels for use in a post Lion world:

As the Mac are both 64bit machines does that mean I need to install Windows 7 64bit or just install 32 bit? (Going with Win7 as I hate Win8). And I will install Office Pro 2013 64 bit too or 32 bit or is that automatically selected by the underlying OS (I use Word, Excel and Access mainly for a membership database of a local club) ? I am not a power user so would appreciate advice on way to go

    Again thank you.  If I only use word, excel and access in the Win environment and Mac OS for email and safari for internet do I need anti virus software . Ie my connection to the world is mac only and I use office pro only to ruin the club, newsletters, membership database etc. and of course anything I do there can drag/drop to the mac environ to email.  That's my understanding anyway.  Next will my existing .pst file copy directly into mac mail or do I have to runs translator  as I recall reading something about that ages ago when I started thinking Mac

  • Can Bootcamp and Parallels share the same Windows applications and data?

    I'm looking at getting an Intel iMac which will let me throw away my old PC - Yeah!
    I will have a couple of Win apps that I will need to hang on to (Quicken - Quicken for Mac is horrible, but that's another tghread). Anyway, can Bootcamp and Parallels share the same Windows applications and data?
    My thought would be to allow my wife to access Quicken from Parallels and not have to reboot. She will only need lightweight access and the overhead of running virtualization wouldn't impact her. I, on the other hand, would want to occasionally boot natively into Windows and run the same application with the same datafile. Is this possible?
    Thanks and looking forward to joining the MacIntel world!

    Thanks for all of the freplies. I suspected that BootCamp and Parallels could not shar ethe same partition, but wanted to verify. To address some of the other posts:
    Re: Quicken vs MoneyDance - I looked at MoneyDance a while back and while it is comparable to Quicken for Mac, it isn't comparable to Quicken for Windows (ergo, Quicken for Mac isn't comparable to Quicken for Windows!). But, as I said, that is a topic for another thread!
    Re: Using Bootcamp/Parallels for only one app: I actually have several apps that I still need access to on Windows. I work with many business applications than only run/are supported on Windows as well as receive some complex Office documents which Office for Mac cannot handle. Quicken (for Windows 2007) was just the best example of a consumer app where I could see wanting access from both OS X and Windows.

  • Is it possible to do an image file restore in a Mac Mini running Windows 7 in Parallels?

    I recently purchased my first Mac, a Mac Mini.  It will have Windows 7 installed with Parallels.  I will probably sell my current Dell laptop Ebay prior to receiving my Mac, and have done a complete data and image file backup to an external drive.  My question is, when I am in Windows 7 on my Mac, will I be able to utilize Windows Restore to load my .iso image from my external drive?   I'd like to have it looking just like what I had on my old Windows machine.  I will have the 1TB fusion drive on my Mac, so space isn't an issue.  My goal is to eventually migrate most of my files and data over to the Mac OS, after which I will only keep a few programs such as Office 2013 in Windows.   Will I have to resize my Windows partition to accomodate this, or will Parallels or Mac OS do this automatically for me?  I'm totally new to the Mac world, so I apologize if these questions have already been answered elsewhere.

    Not all virtualization engines are the same.  I would consult with Parallels if that is going to be the one of choice.

  • Newbie question: Running Parallels from Boot Camp on separate drive

    All: I'm new to the Mac world, so bear with me. I'm awaiting arrival of a Mac Pro that has two separate 250GB drives. I plan on running Parallels because there are certain Windows apps that I need to access periodically--but not enough to open up Boot Camp separately. Someone suggested the following, but I need help in figuring out how this works:
    +"...install Boot Camp on another internal drive (Since you have 4 drive sleds build into the Mac) and run Parallels from that Boot Camp volume. This way you have a dedicated drive for Windows, so its faster and its not using the boot drive at all. You can boot to it natively if you really need the speed and power for gaming or just use Parallels when your in OS X."+
    So in other words, if I already have two drives, I can have my main drive running normal Mac apps, and then if I need to run Windows, I install Parallels and all my Windows apps, along with Boot Camp and Windows XP, on the second drive and use it from there whenever I need to run Windows??

    I don't think BootCamp allows an installation on another drive, but Parallels and other software will.
    You might repost this in the BootCamp forum where there are many more users running Winders under all kinds of 3rd party software.

    Hi
    This will not be a complete review of my experiences with Parallels as I'm relatively new to Macs etc. However, I have to admit to being reasonably impressed.
    I jumped on board the Parallels trains at Beta2. It's now at Beta6.
    I have installed WinXPPro with SP2 and with each new upgrade something extra is added by the Parallels team in terms of funcationality. I'm not convinced with the performance side of things at this time and would suggest that it runs as fast/slowly as my native Windows machine. However, this might be my fault.
    On an orignal install of Parallels I used the default settings and it installed WinXPPro SP2 in about 8GB. On loading the VM for the first time it positvely flew and I was rightly impressed. My latest install (after I reinstalled Mac OS X) saw me tweak the size of the HD image to 50GB (why I'm not too sure now) and, as I say, it's not the fastest in the world and seems to take some time to load.
    Once loaded however, save for the noticeable jumping effect the mouse has, things load quickly (Dreamweaver, Office etc) and perform well.
    Apparently the Parallels team are working hard on the software and hope to have a release of the "final" product soon.
    In my opinion it allows me to run the few software packages which I need and can't find for OS X yet - MS Money for example. It performs well and is a great work in progress with lots of potential. I still have much to learn and experience with Macs and Parallels is one of those programs I feel I would like to spend time optomising.
    Hope this is of use?

  • How to install Windows XP on new iMac - Bootcamp or Parallels?

    Hi
    I'm very new to the Mac world. I just purchased a lovely new iMac.
    I would like to install my Windows XP Professional (SP3) on to my iMac.
    I purchased Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac and before I do anything, I want to know what I should do first.
    Do I install the Windows disk through bootcamp first and then install Parallels Desktop 5?
    or
    Can I bypass bootcamp all together and install Windows through Parallels?
    Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Parallels 6 comes out on the 14th.
    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/09/09/parallelsdesktop_6_for_mac_to_launch_sept_14_with_80_newfeatures.html
    If you will never want to run Windows natively, then you don't need Boot Camp. Otherwise, install first on its own partition, get it setup, then Parallels, and only then activate. Or reactivate. After you have Parallels Tools installed.
    Really ought to check on Parallels forum.
