BT Infinity and House LAN

Hi,
I am a noob to BT Infinity and wanted to see if the following is possible. Can you please let me know if this is feasible or just my aspiration gone too far?
1. I have a Linksys WRT610N router that I want to use for my wireless within the house
2. I have a Netgear switch in the loft
3. The house is CAT6 cabled
Can I
1. Have the Openreach modem that comes with BT infinity installed in the loft(with the master socket) next to the switch
2. connect the LAN1 of the OR modem into my switch
3. Connect the Linksys router(in the WAN port??) to the LAN (on the ground floor) via the installed LAN socket (which goes to the switch in the loft)
will this work? please advise.
regards

You have almost the exact same setup as me already exept I have CAT6a cabling. The way I have set it up is have the router downstairs where the master socket is, feed a CAT5,5e,6,6a cable into the loft to the switch (Infinity's maximum throughput is less that 40mbps and even CAT5 cables can handle 100mbps speeds). From the Switch I have my WAPS (Wireless Access Points) plugged in (1 HomeHub v1 plugged into a v2 which is linked to the switch).
As well as having the switch in the loft, I have 2 servers which never overheat. See below for a diagram if you want to see how I did mine:
To connect a router to a home network, all you would have to do is connect a switch to one of the ports located on the back of the router where you would usually plug computers in.
I hope this helps

  • BT Infinity and Zyxel Powerline Adapters - connect...

    Hi,
I recently upgraded the Infinity and also moved house. So now I have the HH3 with BT Infinity. I use Zyxel Powerline adapters, but struggling to get a connection.
I'm using the following to connect to the HH3 http://www.zyxel.com/uk/en/products_services/pla4225.shtml?t=p and connecting through the Giga or Ethernet inputs on the back of the HH3 but when I try to connect my PC/Laptop to the Powerline adapter in my bedroom it cannot find the network.
Any thoughts? Should I be connecting the Powerline Adapter to the HH3 or the white router BT supply? Do I need to configure something when setting up the Ethernet connection with my PC? I'm using my BT account credentials [email protected] and password but it's not connecting.
    Any inspiration/experimentation welcomed.
    Thanks.

Normally, connect one powerline to the HomeHub and the other to the PC.  If the PC has been set up in the standard way, it will then get a local ip address by DHCP from the HomeHub.  You might go to your PC ethernet adaptor settings and make sure they are set up for 'dhcp' and 'get DNS setttings automatically'.   You won't need to enter any credentials in the PC for this method.  You shouldn't go near the 'connect to the internet' dialog; it should just work automatically.
If you only want to connect a single PC, you could connect the first powerline to the white modem and leave out the HH3 completely.  You would then need to put credentials into the PC: the normal thing there is to enter user '[email protected]', and the password doesn't matter.  That goes into a 'connect to the internet' dialog.
Make sure the 'internet' or whatever lights are blinking on both powerlines, otherwise there is a problem with those, or  the bedroom ring is not connected closely enough to the other ring.  Unlikely, I had a perfectly good connection through different rings and different fuse boxes on different floors with similar zyxel powerline (only single ethernet ones); at least until one stopped working altogether.

  • BT Infinity and Wireless VPN

Since installing BT Infinity 2 days ago my Company VPN connection is lost every 10 minutes or so ("Secure VPN connection terminated locally by the client. Reason 412. The remote peer is no longer responding).  No problems have been reported by other Company users and when using an Infinity LAN connection or even my mobile BB dongle I have a continuous, stable connection.
After repeated calls to BT who told me they didn't support VPN queries my VPN suddenly became stable for a while but I then lost the BT Vision On Demand.  That has now come back after further calls to BT but so too has my VPN disconnect problem.  This is definitely caused by BT's hardware/software settings but I get the feeling that nobody in BT IT Support has the knowledge to deal with the situation.
BT's Home IT Call Service help line was singularly unhelpfull (see also list of complaints on other threads) but most importantly does anybody understand how VPN connections are maintained between the client computer and remote peer in order to help me resolve this issue.  Has anybody had a similar problem and more importantly found a soloution?
It is very worrying to see the number of queries regarding BT Infinity and I wish I had found this site before installing Infinity which will certainly be going back if it is not sorted in the 10 day cooling off period.
regards to all and hoping for help
    Colin

Thanks for both of those.  I tried replacing my HH3 with an HH1 but I think that because my service has now changed to Infinity the HH1 is no longer supported (or vice versa).  Either that or the new main box that was fitted is not compatible with HH1
I have just had a 6 hour stable LAN connection to my Company VPN using a Cisco VPN Client v5 and so the router itself is working fine.  It is simply the wireless connection to VPN that keeps stalling ever since Infinity and HH3 were installed.  Wireless directly to the Internet works fine and so too does my BT Vision.
I am about to try the wireless VPN again now that I have finished work.  What I find pretty frustrating is BT's lack of activity in sorting out the problem.  I am simply told that after installation there will be a 'Transition Period' during which Line Speeds are being changed but what is the purpose of changing Line Speeds, Settings and Channels with no feedback from the user?
    Thanks again for your response.

  • BT Infinity and REIN

I’m currently with BE unlimited when i first joined i received 6mb download and 1mb upload but recently i noticed the download speed had dropped to 3mb, after numerous phone calls to BE and 4 visits from openreach and a bt rein engineer it turns out a neighbours sky box is interfering with my broadband and another 4/5 houses in the street and basically there is nothing they can do about it. I was wondering if i signed up to bt infinity would my speed  be reduced by half. I have spoken to two different sales people from BT infinity and they both assured me rein does not affect the BT infinity service, and stated the speed i would receive would be 33mb download and 8.5 upload. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Thats one of the reasons i said get sales to put it in writing. Much much better than a verbal conversation in a small claim s court.
Sales know they are talking c**p, they just want to get you into a contract with the knowledge that 99.9% of people will in the end suffer it rather than fight them.

  • BT Infinity and 21CN related?

    Hi all,
Our local exchange was updated to 21CN earlier this year, and I was originally told (by BT) that after a possible hour of down-time, my connection speed should go to the maximum supported speed. I had to call BT to find this information out, there wasn't any communication to say the exhange was being updated or there'd be a change in connection speed.
A couple of days ago, we had some marketing through the post about BT Infinity and the super-fast broadband speeds of upto 40mb.
I called BT to ask if we could be upgraded to Infinity, but was told it's not available till March 2012.
I was wondering, if the exchange was updated back in March/April this year, why cant I make use of the 21CN until next year? If I go onto BT's site to sign up as a new customer, it shows 12mb - 20mb as a possible connection speed (currently connecting at just over 8mb, and always have done since broadband was available). Other ISP's show the same possible connection speed.
I did think it could be the router, but I'm still using the HomeHub (v2) and the exchange is about 5min walk from the house.

Try entering your telephone number (for most accurate result) into https://www.btwholesale.com/includes/adsl/main.html
To confirm the estimate the line could achieve.
If your on ADSL go into your router stats and look for the connection type
I was on the basic ADSL upto 8Mb (G.992.1) I contacted BT See THIS THREAD.
They put me onG.992.3 (ADSL2) with the hope the exchange would after a period of "training" then automatically move me toG.992.5 (ADSL2+).
However in my case due the long line length the change to ADSL2 did not increase my speed.... and therefore the exchange did not automatically move me up any further.
If the Checker shows you could achieve the 20Mb speeds then you could try as I did and ask the forum mods if they can get you changed up.
Infinity (Fibre service) is not related to 21CN.
SamKnows for example or BT Openreach may show your exchange now has infinity but the important thing is your Primary Connect Point (small local green cabinet) has to have a larger cabinet installed next to/nearby and yours looks  to be scheduled to be Ready For Service in a few months time.
Keep using the checkers.... Mine was showing 30th Sept then on the 1st July Infinity became available.... but be aware it can go the other way... especially if the bloomin' snow arrives.
Picture of a small green cabinet (far right) with a typical Fibre Cabinet nearby with it's cooling vents
When the new Fibre cab is powered up you can easily hear the fans running, indicating that it may be Ready For Service or soon to be.

  • BT Infinity and Gmail

    Hi,
We have two wifi internet lines in our house, one BT Infinity and one with another provider.
I use Outlook 2003 as my email client, in pop3 mode.
I have configured my Outlook 2003 client with my Gmail account, using the setting suggested by Gmail.
Using BT Infinity, surfing etc works fine, however there is a problem with my Gmail account and Outlook.
When I connect to our other wifi network, with another ISP, Outlook 2003 works fine with my Gmail account.
If I then switch to my BT Infinity wifi network (using the provided home hub), Outlook cannot now connect to Gmail, nagging me to input my correct username and password.
If I then log back in to our other wifi network, Outlook again works fine with Gmaiil.
Why is BT Infinity causing this problem?

Its going to take a few days, as all the tasks associated with your new service, have to be closed by all the departments.
With the Bank Holiday, its goint to take an extra day as well.
Just use your gmail address for now, you will be given the opportunity to use a BT one, a bit later on. You can then change your login e-mail address to the btinternet one.

  • BT Infinity and Airport Express

Hello, I recently "upgraded" to BT Infinity, and ever since I have had connectivity problems with my Airport Express. In the Airport Utility, I get the error message that wireless devices cannot be detected.
I have reinstalled the software, tried various settings (currently Airport Express joins my existing Home Hub network)... But nothing works. And in the Home Hub Manager, it says that Airport Express connected...
    Grateful for any insights!

    PS Windows 7 user.

    Tomas
I'm not sure Airport Express works the way you're trying to use it with a HH3.
Airport Express is designed to connect to a DSL modem (i.e. it would replace the HH3).
It can be used as a wireless repeater, connected to a wireless lan as you're trying to use it, but I think the main wireless unit needs to be an Apple device in that case.
    relevant quotes from Apple site...
"As soon as you plug in your AirPort Express Base Station and connect it to your DSL or cable modem, you can follow the simple instructions on your computer or iOS device"
    and
"If you already have a wireless network in your home and want to extend its range, AirPort Express can help. Just place it in range of your primary base station — an AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule or another AirPort Express — and near the area where you want your wireless connection."

  • Bt Infinity and variable channels used with fixed ...

    Hi
I have BT Infinity and 2 wireless repeaters. One for Sky and the other in a blind spot in the house. I've found that Infinity
seems to work best when I change the settings so that the hub automatically changes the channel however the repeaters
only have a fixed channel option and so keep dropping out.
So for instance I'll set the repeaters to channel 11 and the hub to varied channel. This means that the repeaters only work when the hub switches to channel 11.
Is there any way around this?
    Thanking you
    JoJoH

No, you could set your hubs channel to 11.

  • Can I use both Wifi and a Lan connection at the same time?

With me back in the dorms I have been limited to a slower connection than what I would like. Now we are able to use both Wifi and a Lan line so I was wondering to somewhat "double" my speed if there was any way to use both connections at the same time.
Now I know that you can have both plugged in at the same time, I guess what I'm asking is, is there a way that I could set programs to use one or the other? Or some kind of virtual desktop that is set to use the other connection or anything that would allow both be used at the same time.
Or am I just wishing for something that doesn't have any possible way to work?

    MacBook pro 2.16 C2D 2gb ram   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You can use both at the same time, but not gor Internet access if that's what you're asking.
Now there is a thing called Link Aggregation, which combines a number of interfaces for speed/redundancy, but it really only works locally, and then only with ALL special equipment in the route, and most likely OSX Server involved.
    Sorry.

  • Transparent Tunneling and Local Lan Access via VPN Client

Remote users using Cisco VPN 4.2 connect successfully to a Cisco Pix 515 (ver. 6.3). The client is configured to allow Transparent Tunneling and Local Lan access, but once connected to the Pix, these two options are disabled. What configuration changes are required on the Pix to enable these options? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
    Mike Bowyer

    Hi Mike,
"Transparent Tunneling" and "Local Lan Access" are two different things. "Transparent Tunneling" is dealing with establishing an IPSec Tunnel even if a NAT device is between your client and the VPN-Headend-Device. "Local LAN Access" is dealing with access to devices in the LAN your VPN-Client-Device is connected to.
What do you mean exactly with "disabled once the connection is made" ?
You can check the local LAN Access by having a look at the Route-Table of the VPN-Client:
Right Click the yellow VPN-lock Icon in System-Tray while the VPN-Connection is active and select "Statistics ...". Have a look at the second register page "route details".
Are any local LAN routes displayed when your are connected ?
And - always remember two important restrictions the Online Help of the VPN-Client is mentioning:
1: This feature works only on one NIC card, the same NIC card as the tunnel.
2: While connected, you cannot print or browse the local LAN by name; when disconnected, you can print and browse by name.
    Carsten
PS: Removing Split Tunnel won't enable local LAN access as all traffic would be sent into the IPSec tunnel.

  • Infinity and online gaming

    Hello
I am relativly new to infinity and was wondering if anyone could tell me why its so bad for online gaming?
My download speeds are virtually always 37.5mb download and between 8 - 9mb upload although upload drops sometmimes to slightly lower

however i always get loads of lag when playing on xbox live, to the point it is not worth playing, it gets worse than when I was on normal copper wire broadband.
I have also noticed that there is quite a delay before web pages open when browsing the internet in general, my ping used to be pretty consistent at around 17 - 20ms before I switched to infininty but now seems to jump around lot even going as high as 300ms on occasion.
my line profile seems to have set at 38.10mb which I am happy with, and the engineer who installed my infinity said that my line stats were excellent.
all this said then why do i seem to be suffering when using xbox live??

    Hi Cameron
No I have been trying it with the wireless disabled, although on our old connection this wasnt an issues, myself and my son could both use our xboxs together on the one connection and still it was better than at presen
I didnt have the cable in the gigabyte port, I have now though, what does this port do?
Yes port forwarding set to xbox live

  • Infinity and Anywhere

I recently ordered Infinity but a nice Irish lady rang to say that Infinity is not compatible with Broadband Anywhere. When I said that that I found that difficult to understand she commented that the issue is with BT's billing system.
When will this be sorted out?

    Dear BT,
I'm also very keen to find out about this. Just had a lovely leaflet through from you telling me I can now get Infinity (and at less than Anywhere package), but I come on here only to find there's some non-technical "compatability" issue with my totally unrelated mobile phone.
Seriously BT sort yourselves out, because as soon as another company gets even close to your high uptime levels we'll all be off.
Look I'll tell you what, let me switch to Infinity and charge me a monthly fee for my continued phone use on top - that's fair, yes?
I'm very brand-loyal and a top of the range product user, I've had BTBBA, or Option 3, or whatever previosuly for nearly 10 years. I have BTvision. I want to spend money on a good new product: so stop trying to p*$$ me off and make me take my business and my wallet elsewhere.
Yours looking forward to this issue being resolved very shortly...

  • Bank Directory and house bank?

    Hello,
i am a bit confused on Bank master data and house bank and also what is bank directory?
according to my understanding bank directory is a list of all the bank's across the global no matter our company uses them or no.
bank master data is the bank created in our system which can be our bank or customer/vendor bank
and house bank is our bank where we have out company accounts??
please confirm if i am correct or please direct me to the right answer..
    Thanks

Your understanding is correct.  Bank directory is a listing of all banks.  You may have all or some of them (the ones you transact with - could be also your customers'/vendors' banks) in your bank master - these records reside in table BNKA, if you create them either via FI01 transaction or use the bank directory upload functionality.  Now, when you assign a record from BNKA to one of your company codes, a record gets created in table T012 and that bank becomes your house bank.  The bank accounts that you create under a house bank sit in table T012K.

  • Bank keys and house bank creation

    Hi
My company have 9 branches all over India. HO of my organization is in Bombay.
Now every branch have bank account in respective city. 5 are Current account and 5 are Cash Credit account. But all these bank accounts are in one bank only say Bank ABC...
So how many bank key and house bank should be created? I am confused. I tried reading documentation on bank key and housebank, but my confusion is still there.

    Hi,
The number of house banks depends on the branches of the bank.
You need to open a separate house bank for each bank's branch. For this, create a bank key for the bank branch in FI01 and then assign this bank key into the house bank in FI12 (Or directly create the bank key in Fi12 also)
Then within this bank's branch, if you hold more than one account then create seperate account ID for each account in that house bank.
Separate house bank for each branch helps in the faster processing of bank interfaces for payment and receipt, because then it will use the correct SWIFT code etc for that branch assigned to bank key in house bank.
    Regards,
    Gaurav
