BT Infinity and Zyxel Powerline Adapters - connect...

Hi,
I recently upgraded the Infinity and also moved house. So now I have the HH3 with BT Infinity. I use Zyxel Powerline adapters, but struggling to get a connection.
I'm using the following to connect to the HH3 http://www.zyxel.com/uk/en/products_services/pla4225.shtml?t=p and connecting through the Giga or Ethernet inputs on the back of the HH3 but when I try to connect my PC/Laptop to the Powerline adapter in my bedroom it cannot find the network.
Any thoughts? Should I be connecting the Powerline Adapter to the HH3 or the white router BT supply? Do I need to configure something when setting up the Ethernet connection with my PC? I'm using my BT account credentials [email protected] and password but it's not connecting.
Any inspiration/experimentation welcomed.

Normally, connect one powerline to the HomeHub and the other to the PC. If the PC has been set up in the standard way, it will then get a local ip address by DHCP from the HomeHub. You might go to your PC ethernet adaptor settings and make sure they are set up for 'dhcp' and 'get DNS setttings automatically'. You won't need to enter any credentials in the PC for this method. You shouldn't go near the 'connect to the internet' dialog; it should just work automatically.
If you only want to connect a single PC, you could connect the first powerline to the white modem and leave out the HH3 completely. You would then need to put credentials into the PC: the normal thing there is to enter user '[email protected]', and the password doesn't matter. That goes into a 'connect to the internet' dialog.
Make sure the 'internet' or whatever lights are blinking on both powerlines, otherwise there is a problem with those, or the bedroom ring is not connected closely enough to the other ring. Unlikely, I had a perfectly good connection through different rings and different fuse boxes on different floors with similar zyxel powerline (only single ethernet ones); at least until one stopped working altogether.

Switched to Infinity and dropping out all the time...

With ordinary unlimited we'd lose connection 2 or 3 times a week. BT Sales people who kept phoning said if we upgraded to Infinity it'd solve the problem. We upgrade 5 and a half weeks ago and connection is now dropping out many times a day - several times an hour sometimes! We were never off the phone to the help centre and eventually the engineer came back to do checks but things just improve for a day or two (improve, not fixed) then it's back to normal. Every wi-fi device in the house gets kicked off and the desk top help kicks in usually saying to phone BT that it can't get us back online. After week 3 of this I gave up phoning them as was fed up with their apologies. Am hoping someone here can help. Have complained to BT but no response after initial auto email. The desk top help has to keep renewing my ip address. I have no idea what this is but really could do with some pointers. Five weeks of paying for Infinity only to be kicked off repeatedly is leaving me feeling robbed!

I have moved this thread to a different board, now we know its not a problem with your Infinity connection.
It also allows forum members to give more specific advice.
What you need to do now, is to try different wireless channels on the home hub. There are 13 to choose from.
The dropouts are most likely caused when anothe wireless router is switched on, and its on the same wireless channel as your home hub.

If you have a Windows laptop with a wireless card, then you can download a free program which will display which channels are in use, and allow you to select a better one.

If its mainly the Xbox that is affected, then a better solution is to avoid a wireless connection, and use powerline adapters instead, as shown here.

Extend wireless network with multiple airport express and netgear powerline

I currently have the following network configuration:
1. Using ATT u-verse (2-wire 3800HGV-B "modem") to internet
2. Disabled the u-verse modem wireless router, and have connected an Apple Time Capsule wireless router (on a DMZ)
3. Have four Netgear XAVB5001 powerline adapters connected to the time capsule (for our iMac desktops and the Apple TV)
4. Have an Airport Express wirelessly connected to the time capsule to extend range (for our iPhones and iPad)
All this is currently working. What I would like to do is the following, keeping 1-3 above the same:
4. Connect the airport express to the time capsule via Netgear XAVB5101 powerline adapter (instead of wirelessly connecting to the time capsule as it is today) and use it to extend the wireless range of the time capsule
5. Add ANOTHER airport express to the time capsule via powerline adapter (and extend the wireless range elsewhere in the house).
Does anyone have any experience with this kind of setup and can assure that it would work? (I'm trying to decide whether to spring for a couple more powerline adapters and another airport express)

I had a VERY similar problem: I was trying to extend my wireless network using a hardwired ethernet connection from Airport Extreme to my Time Capsule. Every time I plugged in the wire to the TC, everything disappeared. Unplugged, and boom. Came back.
Here's how I solved it:
Go into Airport Utility and select the unit you are trying to use as a wireless extender and choose to edit it. Then, on the wireless tab select CREATE a wireless network. But, give it the exact same name and password. This is completely counter-intuitive. You would think to choose EXTEND, but this would be wrong. Next choose the network tab. And, select Router mode to Bridge (off).
By choosing the same name and password, your phone, laptop, etc. will think it's on the same network and move seamlessly from one to the other.
See if this fixes your issue. Fixed mine instantly. AND, it only took 3 painstaking hours of checking ethernet connections and rewiring jacks, etc. to figure it out. LOL

Ideal powerline adapters with Infinity 2?

As the title says, what would be a pretty good (and cheapish) set of powerline ethernet adapters to give best results with Infinity 2?
The engineer set everything up this morning and I get near enough full 80/20. I use a set of 85Mbps TP-LINK adapters and get 6-11Mbps (never noticed the problem before as my old broadband speed was much less).
Currently thinking of ordering 2 sets of 200Mbps TP-LINK adapters unless someone could advise otherwise?

I have aSamsung Smart tv with infinity and will not allow Microsoft to install silverlight to watch BT Sport ,so I thought upgrade with a you view box,then read on how to install that it won't work with a power line plugin- great! This was my original problem when I bought the smart tv ethernet connections, I use Ethernet plugins next to my tv etc setup, but this is no good for BT Sport

BT Infinity 2 - Bought 200Mbps powerline adapters ...

I had BT Infinity 2 installed this week and was happy to see that I was getting 75Mbps down and 17Mbps up via ethernet cables. However, I really want a cableless solution. I bought a TP-Link TL-PA211KIT 200Mbps twin pack, had no problem setting it up, but my speed has dropped to 52Mbps down and 14.6Mbps up.
After looking at the diagnostic tool, I found that the quality was hovering between 140-150Mbps. So I have a couple of questions:
1. Is there anything I can do with these existing adapters in order to improve my speed?
2. Would buying 500Mbps adapters and using those instead allow me to get the full use of my connection?
I've tried moving the adapters around the house but I've not noticed a lot of difference. The computer is upstairs with one adapter and the other is downstairs, plugged into the mains right next to my hub. I'd really like to be able to make full use of what I'm paying for so I'd be grateful for a little advice.

As you have found, unfortunately the connection synch speed of powerline adapters does not equate to their actual throughput. There is a lot of error correction overhead that means actual throughput is much less than synch.
I haven't been able to find a definitive conversion between synch speed and throughput for powerline adapters, I think because a lot depends upon how noisy your environment is. However you should be aware that going from 200 to 500Mbps adapters doesn't mean that your throughput wilI increase by 2.5 times.
That said inyour case it may be sufficient to transfer your full Infinity rate. I have found that 500Mbps Netgear adapters were capable of transferring at 72Mbps down / 16Mbps up between my downstairs router and my upstairs PC, but only after I fiddled with their QoS settings to prioritise the PC line over my smart TVs which also use adapters on the same LAN.
PS. The netgears were synching at about 450Mbps to achieve this throughput.

Well the term "hotlined" I have never heard before. In any case many states (like NY) just passed regulatory powers to the State Public Service Commission of which it may be called something different in your state. You could file a complaint with them. Or file a complaint with your state attorney generals office, they also take on wireless providers.
The problem here is the staff you speak to are poorly trained, in days gone by it took one call to them and they pulled up your account and see the error and had the authority to remove any errors. They did not remove legitimate account actions, but used their heads instead of putting a customer off or worse lying to the customer.
Its a shame you have to go through what you going through.

Powerline adapter connection to switch

I have had BT Infinity installed last week and quickly found out that my speeds are much better wired than wireless.
After a little research, I am planning to buy the following two products:
TP-Link PA411KIT AV500 500 Mbps Powerline Adapter - Twin Pack
TP-Link TL-SG1005D 5-Port Gigabit Unmanaged Desktop Switch
The plan is to connect an ethernet cable from my HomeHub3 into one of the powerline adapters, and put the other powerline adapter in my upstairs bedroom and connect an ethernet cable from that to 1 of the 5 ports on the desktop switch.
Will this planned setup allow me to use the remaining 4 ports to connect my laptop, xbox 360, and sky+HD box in my upstairs bedroom using ethernet cables whilst maintaining wired internet speeds?
It's going to be £50 to put in place so I'd rather know beforehand whether or not I'm wasting my time with this.

I find the speed is just like wired but with infinity speed you may find a slight drop but will be alot better than wireless. you should be able to connect your devices to the switch without a problem

Using Broadband/BT Vision and BT Powerline Adapter...

Good Evening, Two weeks ago I moved to BT Broadband, set up the Home Hub etc and all was well with my home network using powerline adapters (Solwise & Zyxel) to connect a PC, Printer & NAS independently to the network. Wireless also worked well to two laptops in the house.
This week on Monday, my BT Vision box arrived and so I connected that up and reasonably quickly all was well with that too.
However, my home network immediately stopped working with the PC unable to connect to the internet via the BT Powerline adapter connected to the home hub. Wireless continues to be fine. I've looked in this forum and saw a post which indicated the BT Vision box could work with Solwise adapters so tonight I tried that, but it didn't connect up at all.
So, my questions are:-
1. Can I connect my home network to the home hub via the BT powerline adapters somehow?
2. If not, can I actually use my other adapters to connect BT Vision and my home network to the home hub?
3. Is there any other way I can set all this up so I can use both?
I should add moving hubs & boxes closer together is not an option, likewise I could go wireless to the PC but the NAS & printer are not wireless enabled.
Any thoughts, suggestions will be greatly accepted!

1) Not sure, don't know enough about them but I'm sure I read that Poweline type products are not necessarily compatible, but can't remember any details.
2) No reason why you can't use your other adapters with the Vision box, all it needs is an Ethernet connection, how you get that is up to you. Can't see a problem with that.

A bit of grubbing around took me to this thread on the Solwise forum. Seems like Comtrend and Solwise use different standards and won't work together.

Powerline adapters not accessing sleep mode

I've just upgraded to BT Infinity, and since the router and PC are now in different rooms, and my PC doesn't have wireless, I bought some Powerline adapters, one connected to the Hub and one connected to the PC. However, even when the computer is switched off, unplugged and disconnected from powerline, the unit connected to the Hub won't go into sleep mode - it flashes regularly once per second as if it's communicating with the Hub. Is this likely to be the case, and if so, how can I stop it? The units I'm using are TL-PA251KIT.

The home hub will still keep transmitting data as it continually sends broadcast frames to discover new devices and find their MAC addresses, which it then stores.
This will stop the powerline adapters from going into sleep mode. The only way to stop that would be to unplug them from the hub, and eventually they would go into sleep mode.
I doubt very much that they use much power anway.

Home Hub 3 Losing Powerline Adaptor Connection

Hello All,
First off, apologies if this question has been posted and/or answered elsewhere but I couldn't find any posts that duplicate my situation.
I have BT Infinity with a Home Hub 3 (installed in July last year) and all seems to be well except for the ability of the Home Hub to keep ethernet connections alive.
My setup;
1x HH3 in the study, connected to the Internet as per usual & performing DHCP duties with a gigabit switch to connect all the 'local' hardware.
1x Comtrend 9020 Powerline adaptor pair to connect the apple TV in the lounge.
The problem;
The powerline adaptors - which I only chose after seeing that they were the same kind installed by BT Vision engineers, so they must be considered compatible with the HH3, right? - seem to keep 'dropping off' my network. Originally, I had them using DHCP addresses because I figured that the BT Vision customers wouldn't be doing any additional configuration but that didn't work so I guessed that there must be something that the BT Vision box does to keep the connection alive.
Now I have tried switching to fixed IP addresses but that also seems to be a dead end because they still drop off the connected devices list on the HH3.
It would appear to be the connection between the HH3 and the Powerline adaptors which is being dropped because when this happens I am unable to login to the powerline config interface (browser based) and pings are not responded to.
If I want to stream content to the Apple TV I now have to resort to resetting the HH3, the powerline adaptors and the Apple TV, which kind of defeats the convenience factor a little (plus it would be far too technical to explain to my wife). BTW - the full reset process was arrived at after trying different combinations of resetting the 3 components in the chain with no success.
Any ideas?

You must use fixed IP addresses outside of the home hubs DHCP range, otherwise you will have the same problem

I think you can do that for the Powerline adapters as well.
Login to the Powerline web interface, password is BT, I think there is a setting to use a static address. You will need to use a different address for the other Powerline adapter.

Trying to set up Airport Express with Ethernet Powerline adapters

Having some problems trying to set up my Airport Express with Netgear ethernet powerline adapters.
I want to set up as follows:
Wireless Belkin router --- powerline <---> powerline --- airport express --- home stereo system
The problem I have is that I can connect the airport x in client mode & wirelessly play music using airtunes (until the sound breaks up) but itunes does not find the airport x when connected via the powerlines.
I have airport admin utility configured as follows:
Airport tab:
Wireless mode: create a wireless network
Wireless network name: same as my wireless router SSID
Allow this network to be extended: unticked
radio mode: 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
Channel: automatic
Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2 personal (as per my router)
Wireless Password: as per my router
Verify Password: as per my router
Internet tab:
Connect using: ethernet
Connection sharing: off (bridge mode)
Music tab:
Enable Air Tunes ticket
no password set
In iTunes, I have home sharing on & share entire library selected with no password set.
Using OS 10.6.5 & Airport Express 7.5.2
I can ping the IP address of the airport express when connected via the powerlines but cannot select the speakers in iTunes (they are greyed out).
Any assistance would be appreciated....

Thanks for the quick response...
As suggested, I connected up the Airport X to the Belkin and plugged in a pair of headphones. It didn't work, still could not select the Airport X as speakers.
Dug out my old Netgear DG834G and connected that up in place of the Belkin - it worked. Next connected in the Netgear powerlines and it still worked.
So, the problem is the relatively new Belkin F7D4401 router.
Looks like I will have to find an alternative 802.11n...

Wifi vs. Powerline adapters?

Trying to find a good networking solution because I am in a long house and the cable/wired router is in the front and I am in the back and worried about range speed of Wifi. I am looking at these Powerline adapters:

These powerline adapters are homeplug certified, but the non homeplug certified are cheeper, but the homeplug ones seem faster what dose homeplug really mean?

Configuring non-BT provided Powerline Adapters

I recently installed BT Vision+. The package came with a BT HomeHub2 router and two COMTREND PG9020 powerline adapters. I chose to replace my Netgear 802.11n router with the BT Home Hub2 - and it all works fine.
To my original Netgear router i had recently connected a pair of ADDON HP2000 powerline adapters which allowed my son more assured access to the router (due to some thick walls wireless was a tad unrelaible).
I now want to know how can I add the two ADDON HP2000 powerline adapters onto the BTHomeHub2 provided network using one of the COMTREND PG9020 as an Access Point (AP) and the other connected to my BT-V box. With the two spare ADDON HP2000 powerline adpaters I should be able to have two more ethernet acccess points.
How do I configure the two ADDON HP2000 devices to work through the COMTREND PG9020 Access Point to the Home Hub2?
I am reasonably IT literate but please don't get too technical.

PG-9020 don't (as far as I can read from the specification).

Good, luck - it might work, but I wouldn't be the farm. Briefly - you need to give them all the same encryption key and encryption type. You need to use a web browser and navigate to the IP address of each adapter. You should be able to identify where they are by using the Attached Devices section of your HomeHub:

Once you have identified them, login using their IP address - typing the password (password or admin):
Navigate to Change Configuration (Left Nav)->Mac (Top Nav)
e.g on my Comtrends, the encryption is set here:

Make sure all adapters have the Same Encrpyption Key and Type.
You can try and get them to work (it's worth a try). Comtrend aren't brilliant at providing the actual standards they use. If you can't get it to work following the instructions, it might be better buying 3 or 4 of the same type of adapter - it is easy to configure them using the guides.
