BT Infinity Home Extension Kit - Wall socket to Da...

Hi,
I have two lovely house rabbits that I want to throttle, although I've guarded their access to the area, have bitten through the cable from the wall socket to the data extension kit.
The cable between the two appears to be bespoke 2 pin RJ11 twisted pair cable for this purpose and the RJ11 cable I have that fits the socket is a 4 pin connection without a twisted pair doesn't work.
BT have been great as when I asked what the cable the guy who dealt with my call didn't know and just offered to send a cable pack, which is fantastic but I need some spares for a pre-emptive strike against the fluffly ones.
Anyone have any ideas?  My google-fu is turning up lots of questions regarding the connection to the home hub.
Thanks in advance.

Its should be two or three pair cat5. You can use normal 4pair cat5, if you cant get hold of two pair. Only one pair is required if its a vdsl data extension for the infinity modem.

  • Purchase Infinity data extension kit?

    Hi
Sometime in the future I intend to get BT Infinity, but just at the moment I am doing some building work where I would like to put in place the 30 meter data extension cable so it’s there ready.
Does anybody know where I can purchase the BT Infinity data extension kit?
    Thanks

(corrected ... ryant 704 is quite right)
Put in cat5e or cat6 wiring.  If that is terminated with telephone type connections it will act as a data extension kit.
Or it may be better (you didn't give details of your house arrangements) to keep the modem near the current master socket, and connect it via the same cable with ethernet termination to a remote router.  There is always some speed loss from data extension kit (maybe trivially small), but shouldn't be any loss with a modem/router connection up to 100m or so.
Either way, once the cable is in you can decide later how to use it.

  • BT Infinity Data Extension Kit Performance

    Hi,
I am due to get BT Infinity installed and I anticipate I will need about 20m of the Data Extension Kit supplied during installation.  Does use of this kit make any difference to the download\upload performance?  I would be keen to hear of performance of people that use this kit.
    Many thanks,
    Scott

Performance will not degrade enough for you to notice, i have 3 20m extensions to 3 pc's across the house, all of them report 35mb download speeds without any loss of performance.
Using a Draytek Vigor 2820 router with the infinity modem going straight into it, i don't use the BT Homehub.
The extension is just a standard cat5 cable.
    Good luck

  • ADSL Extension Kit and BT Infinity

    Hello,
A couple of years ago, whilst renovating the front room, I installed a NTE5 Master ADSL Adaptor and "BT Engineers ADSL Extension Kit" with a dual RJ11 (ADSL+telephone) socket. The extension cable is twisted pair but there are only 3 twisted pairs of wire. Can somebody please advise if this extension setup will work with BT Infinity. I hope it will as my main telephone socket is a corner of the room away from power. I don't mide changing sockets at either end but it's the bit in the middle I cannot easily change.
    Thanks in advance
    PJ

The cable you have run, does it only have 3 twisted pairs or is it Cat5 cable with 4 but you have only used 3?
Would you be able to replace this cable with CAT5e if you could?
I have recently had Cat5e cable run from the connection plate were the BT cable come into the garage to my master socket so i would also like to know the answer to your question.
Id like to think that 3 TP cable would be enough since 4 TW will give you 100MB network and infinity is only around 30MB.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

  • Infinity Home Hub

Hi  Next week all being well I have Infinity installed by an BT engineer.   Can someone tell me please where the Open Reach Modem and the BT Home Hub will be placed.  I would think that the Modem would be close to the entry into the property and the Home Hub close to the computer.  The reason for asking is that I may go for BT Vision, and I would have to have a Ethernet link between the TV and Home Hub.
    Ta,

The modem will usually be placed where your master socket is.  They should move the master socket or add a data extension kit if asked; but some installers are unwilling to do so.
You can run and ethernet cable of any reasonable length between the modem and HomeHub: the installer won't do it for you.  Similarly for any ethernet you may want from HomeHub to TV.
Depending on how much time you have, it may be best to keep the HomeHub near the modem for the initial install, as long as you have some device (laptop?) you can conveniently use to verify the install.  Then move the HomeHub at your convenience later.  Moving the modem after install is more of an issue, and any extra wiring involved could reduce your speeds.

  • QUERY REGARDING INFINITY DATA EXTENSION

Im having Bt Infinity installed on thursday and I want to have Hub in the room upstairs where the pc is located. My master socket is downstairs in the hall. Im very confused after reading some entries on this forum. Is their a charge for installing the data extension kit or is it part of the free install ?? http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9652   The information on this link seems to suggest their is a fee for any internal wiring work undertaken (data or telephone extensions). Is their any of the mods who can give me a definitive yes or no regarding a charge for this. Thanks

I had Infinity installed last week with a similar setup to what you describe. The OR guy made the existing extension socket upstairs the master and the downstairs socket which was the master an extension. He used a spare pair of cores in the existing extension cable to do this so no additional wiring as such was required. Everything works just as it should.

  • Infinity Data Extension - will it spoil the decor?

I'm seriously thinking about Infinity but the master socket is downstairs and the existing hub and everything connected to it is upstairs. Obviously I need the data extension kit. So, how discreet is this? Will the engineer run it along the same path as existing phone extensions? Will he provide a nice neutral grey to match the paintwork and keep SWMBO happy? Will he run it under carpets? Distance  from master socket to hub location is about 2.5m vertically and 7m horizontally.

Would this cost money to have the kit installed? I understand it is simply an Ethernet cable where the most standard cable can deliver speeds of 100mb which you can buy for £5.00 or less.
I just want to know as I would happily install it myself if this was the case...
    Thanks

  • Is the extension kit a ethernet cable!!!

id just like to know like the subject says is the extension kit basically a ethernet cable with the plastic clips at either end.
I ask because i have a way i would like my install to go.
I want to have my router and modem together very close to my double socket in the front room, and have wireless for downstairs, which is where i use my laptop mainly and my ps3 slim then have a wired connection from my router up through my out of use chimney breast to my computer desk which is directly in front of my vent of my chimney breast upstairs(my gaming enclosure).that way no need for him to use extension kit, suits me fine and am sure would suit him and would be a tidy solution also for me,but would he leave me a a suitable length ethernet to connect as i want in place of extension gear.

ok right so now im really confused so we dont know what we get till we get it.
The thing is im not gonna be in,ive gotta leave it to the missus to sort so need to get it right so she knows wot the deal is.
I can only presume that the extension kit would be for the phone line.
What you need is a CAT5e lead which will go from downstairs up through the chimney breast to your PC.
When I had my instal last week I had already laid my own CAT5e lead from where the phone line would come in to the room where my PC i and  had the Home Hub setup next to the PC.
All the engineer had to do was fit the Master socket and modem and plug the CAT5e cable in. He couldn't get his head around that and insisted the HH had to be next to the router and my CAT5e pulgged into that to the PC.
I let him do it that way and then just moved the HH to where I wanted it after he left. No biggie really.
If you need to purchase a long ethernet lead the best place is ebay, you can get the length you want for under £5 including postage.

  • My iPod Touch will no longer charge from a wall socket, only my computer. HELP!

My 4th generation iPod Touch will no longer charge from a wall socket, only my computer. I tried buying a new cable and USB charging socket (and I bought one made by Apple), but that did not fix the problem. I restored it from iTunes, hoping that would work as well, but that failed. I am at my wit's end. Can anybody here help me? I've bought new equipment, tried rebooting, restoring, etc. but nothing so far has proven successful. If anyone's got a solution, please help!
    Thanks!

All I can suggest is the standared fixes. It seems very strange
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem. Bring the cable and Apple wall charger too.

  • 4th Gen. ipod. No longer charges from wall socket. Still can charge from computer. Wall power adapter and cord both work fine on other devices. Wall Why?

4th Generation ipod. Used to charge fine from wall socket (cord and USB adapter) and could also charge on the computer. Suddenly stopped charging from the wall. The same cord and adapter still work for my iphone, so there is not problem with either of them. What has changed? Why won't the ipod charge from the wall anymore? Is there anything I can do about it?

Thanks! It didn't actually work with the one I was using to charge the computer either. We had tried the computer cable with the power adapter, and it didn't  work to charge the ipod, though it does charge my iphone. Following your idea further,  I waited for my husband to get home from a trip and tried one of his extra cables he keeps in his backpack. That cable worked in with the USB  power adaptor. I had thought that because the cable I use on my computer charges my iphone through the USB power adapter or the computer, and that it charged the ipod through the computer that it was fully functional. Apparantly not.  Thanks again.

  • IPhone adapter wall socket blew up!

My grandson gave me his old iPhone 4S to use plus adapter which, he bought from amazon as a genuine product (I know what you are thinking!) he told me it needed fully charging up.  This I did when I got home plugging it into a wall socket low on the wall in my kitchen near to my dining table.  I kept checking how it was getting on but it did not appear to be doing much.  After about 2hrs I sat at the table to do some work, checked again, still no improvement when all of a sudden the plug exploded, very very loud bang, shooting the front part and the inners right past my leg (thank goodness the socket was not head height, makes me shiver to think what might have happened).  The back of the adapter with the pins is stuck in the socket, black inside the plug and around the socket and the phone lead shot out of the adapter.
I thought it had fried the phone but after I had gotten over my fright (well I am 66!) decided to try to charge it up with my ipad2 adapter as there appeared to life left in the phone!  This worked perfectly.  Since this has happened I have checked the internet and it would appear that Apple were replacing some of these adapters last year at a reduced price if they were taken into one of their shops.
I do not have a shop near me and I cannot find a correct telephone number (uk) to ring about this as it feel someone should be advised.  My grandson has now gone back to university a long way from me as I am sure he would have helped me with this.
Would be grateful for any help.  Is it still ok to charge the phone with the ipad2 adapter?
    I have taken photographs.

Apple does not reccommend that you buy ony kind of charger from a 3rd party this is not because we just want your money but this is for your safety! Apple is the one who makes the chargers and are designed correctly to make sure that something like this happens. When you buy one off amazon real cheap then it is a risk of being made cheaply and possibly not going to work correctly either. I posted a link above for you read on the direct apple website for ya. Glad your okay though

Hello, I have an iPod 3G which I can charge using the laptop / PC / Car adaptor. However can't charge using (M)any wall socket charger. Have tried at least 3 of them at different sockets at home. But iPod does not show "charging".

HEY! I have the exact same problem! I have a ipod touch 2G. Have you fixed the problem? I recently bought a new Apple Wall Charger. It does not work! I have taken it to the store, and it workers there. WEIRD! HELP!
Let me get this straight. You have a brand new Apple wall charger. It does not work at home but it works fine at the store? Does it work at a neighbor's house?
Sounds like you need to call an electrician to inspect your outlets at home.

  • IPad 3rd gen not charging via wall socket

Ok I'm really annoyed right now, my iPad 3rd gen has suddenly decided not to charge when plugged via adapter to the wall socket. I thought it was the cables fault so I went into the currys store and bought an apple charger, came home and I have the same problem. When I plug my iPad to the wire to charge the battery sign flashes between between charging and not charging and then I get a message saying maybe this device is not compatible with the iPad and now I just keep getting the message saying "not charging". So I plugged the wire to my MacBook and yay the iPad charges, but its a little bit inconvinient for me and I prefer charging via the wall socket. I've tried everything resetting etc I've even done the software update (ios7.1). Can someone please tell me what's going on, am I doing something wrong? Any help would be appreciated! Oh I've also ordered the apple 12w adaptor charger, do you think this will solve the problem? Thank you

You, say, " I thought it was the cables fault", but then you say, "I went into the currys store and bought an apple charger". Did you buy a charger or a cable?
The problem could be the charger. If so, the new 12W charger should solve the problem.
