BT Infinity I - Faceplate

I'm going to order BT Infinity I (up to 38) soon and i'm slightly confused.
I was under the impression that the house master socket faceplate needs to be upgraded, but when trying to order online it says that an engineer only needs to come out if I get BT infinity II?
Can anyone shed any light

Hi Danoid,
No there is no need to change the faceplate as micro filters will be provided. Basically it will work the same as an ADSL set up, all the work is done externally then you fit the filters and Hub 5 yourself.  My understanding is that you will be notified once the work has been done on the activation day to let you know when it's ok to connect the new equipment.]

    Here's my problem, my broadband is fast enough and stable at around 10db SNR giving me 13Mbps.
    But when my connection re-syncs to a lower margin of 6db, I get terrible errors on the line which cause my broadband speed to drop to less than 5Mbps.
    What if I cant find the source of the errors, or fix the issue?

  • New Faceplate for Infinity

    I understand that a new faceplate is installed on the master socket when Infinity is installed.
    If I need to cancel Infinity and go back to ADSL2 will the faceplate require changing back.

    No the face plate will still work as before

  • New Infinity Order - As it happens !!!

    I've just ordered Infinity (today) and I thought I'd track the order etc here for others to see 'live' what to expect:
    As a precursor, I've had BT ADSL for many years, and no end of problems with the Indian call centre, but great experience from the users and mods on this site - the mods are the reason I'm staying with BT instead of switching to TalkTalk...
    In Autumn last year my Infinity availability showed as available from end of Jan 2013 (and confirmed by email from Openreach), but in Winter this changed to an earliest date of End of March 2013 - not a problem, just have to wait. This weekend this changed to now available to order, so today I did just that.
    My current set-up is adsl2+ unlimited, with minimal phone + BTVision unlimited. I wanted Infinity 2, + minimal phone + BTVision with Youview box. I have 5 months to run on current contract.
    04/02/2013 - Called BT to upgrade. Approx 5 minutes on hold, but ok - everyone gets busy. Spoke to John who seemed very knowledgeable about his products and also very helpful. I was put on hold a couple of times for a couple of minutes, but eventually we agreed the following package, with prices as advertised:
    New contract:
    Phone - 12 months, prepaid so save £56.40.
    Broadband: Infinity 2 unlimited (including non-throttled P2P), estimate 59Mbps down / 20Mbps up.
    TV: TV Unlimited as we had before, but with new Youview box - free, but with £49 activation fee. (Not sure what he activation fee is for as I'm already on BTVision - advice happily received if this can be waived, but not a deal breaker if I have to pay it).
    Installation date agreed as pm (1pm to 6pm) on wed 20/02/2013.
    John could not confirm if my old BTV box and Youview box would work together, but confirmed that BT want to aim for multi-room so suspected that at some time this would stop working if it even started.
    John also confirmed that my new youview box should work fine with powerline adaptors in the same way as my current BTV box.
    First problem was that John can order everything except the Youview box - there is apparently a problem doing this for existing customers - John confirmed he'll call back within 1 or 2 days with the Youview order added on. I confirmed to him that this is necessary for me to complete my order - I won't accept the Infinity package with a 12 month contract then have to pay for a youview box.
    Cancellation terms stated as:
    I can cancel the broadband/TV service up to 17th Feb.
    7 days to cancel the prepaid phone line. After this I'm tied into the BT line for 12 months which implicitly means I can't change broadband suppliers because they normally require you take their phone line rental. This is the critical path, so if my free youview box doesn't appear on my order page before this then I need to cancel everything and then re-order the complete set.
    I'll let you know when/if John calls back and what the update is on the youview box and also the install date.

    20/02/2013 - Sixth undate.
    Hopefully the last update. I was given the 1pm to 6pm slot and the Openreach engineer (Dave) called at approx 2pm, explained what he needed to do at the cabinet and that he'd be with me in 30 mins.
    Dave was the same engineer who fixed my line in October and also fitted the new faceplate ready for infinity at that time. He tested the line speed and then connected the new modem to my hub - and viola, 75.1/14.9 connection (wired test) against an estimated 59/19.
    I expect this to fluctuate as the line settles and also it may go down quite a bit but I'm extremely happy with this result.
    Anyone else in the PO15 postcode, cabinet 18 - I was no.2 Infinity connection so there's plenty of space left for now.
    So for everyone who is having problems - good things can happen using the advice on this forum. A few months ago I was so hacked off with BT I was going to leave. Now turned round to an extremely happy customer after a few months of good ADSL, flawless BTV (now Youview too) and an upgrade to Infinity with a new contract. All it took was a bit of patience to get my line fixed and get rid of all the noise.

  • Phone not working after infinity installation

    I have just moved my phone and broadband from Sky to Bt and the engineer called this morning to complete the installation. I have 2 phone sockets. When I had broadband originally installed it was before the days of filters so it required a BT engineer visit. As my computer was upstairs the engineer 'back wired' the sockets (apologies if I have the terminology wrong) so the adsl faceplate was fitted to the upstairs wired extension. Today, the Openreach engineer was initially puzzled but said he would be able to install the Infinity faceplate on the upstairs extension as originally fitted. He checked the line was ok, checked the broadband connection and put the faceplate back on the 2 sockets. After he left I tried to make a call via the downstairs socket without success and I assumed that the phone line had not yet been changed back to BT. This afternoon I received an email from BT advising that my phone was now active but the downstairs socket will not work. I am able to make and receive calls on the upstairs extension. I have just spent 40 minutes on the phone to BT, explaining the problem to 4 different people. Each BT employee advised that it would cost £130 for an engineer to revisit my house to correct the fault that they had somehow caused! To say I'm frustrated is an understatement. Has anyone any suggestions how I can resolve the problem. All 4 BT employees did not really understand the problem. I would appreciate any help.

    You cannot use a phone connection for broadband when on Infinity. The only connection that can be used is that which comes from the home hub 3, which is near the Openreach modem.
    You have to use wireless, run an Ethernet cable, or use Powerline adapters.
    You phone should work if it is plugged into the botton socket of the new Infinity master socket.

  • New Infinity 2 installation - speed lower than exp...

    I switched across from O2/Sky ADSL to Infinity 2 on 27 March. BT estimated the DL speed range for my line as 47-65Mbps.
    The Openreach chap (contractor) was reluctant to change the faceplate because I already have an ADLSNation XTE-2005 filtered faceplate and it was proving a little tough to remove. He said this would probably be ok as it's 'fairly modern'.  Muttered something about it delaying his next job.
    I've read various comments about the compatibility of the XTE-2005 faceplate for vDSL.  
    He went away to do the cabinet stuff and returned to hook up the Homehub 5. While waiting for the hub to boot up I asked what speed he'd got at the cabinet. Blank stare. Oh, he said, I just check it on my iphone! Anyway, he did this and got a speed of around 31Mbps, less than expected but not a very good test over wireless. Thought it might pick over the next couple of days.
    Now, I thought that initial line training period is 10 days, but the HH5 booklet talks about the line settling after 3 days. Which is right?
    After  5 days, I've re-synced twice since installation and the BTW speed tester now shows the DL has crept up to 33.39 with an IP profile of 34.28. Obviously still nowhere near even the lower end of the range they estimated.
    So ... do I need to wait for the full 10 days before complaining and/or mucking about with testing via the test socket etc ?  I feel if I was going to get anywhere near the estimated speed range, I'd have got there by now.
    I stupidly expected the Openreach engineer to check the speed at the cab and compare it with the speed at my faceplate to make sure I'm getting the best possible speed. Maybe this investigation needs to be done properly now. 
    I'm about 200 yards from the cab and my line quality may not be great. If they test properly and this is all I can get, then  fine, but I'm not prepared to pay for Infinity 2 when I'm not even getting Infinity 1 speeds.

  • New Infinity advice please?

    Hi,
    Looking for hints/advice to ensure I get a smooth install of Infinity please.
    Currently I have two lines, one of which is on BeThere ADSL2 which I would keep for a short while after BT Infinity install, then drop.
    The other line I would use for BT Infinity and currently it is just a voice line (hired from BT, calls with TalkTalk).
    The master socket is in the hallway (traditional setup), with various extensions all round the house. BT checker is indicating 62mb/20mb on Infinity2 for this line.
    Main computer is in dining room (no phone extensions) which currently connected to the BeThere hub/router (which in a different room) via 500mb Homeplug and all works just fine. Other computers/Ipods/devices connected via either Homeplugs or WiFi. Occasional IP address conflicts on network, but usually easily resolved.
    What would be my ideal setup for BT Infinity?
    I'd rather not have a bunch of new cabling, but recognise that I may have to.
    I'm thinking the following could be some good setups.
    1. Infinity Hub and Router in Hallway by master socket and then data pumped into network via Homeplugs.
    Would the Infinity engineer be ok with this, or would he (maybe a she?) insist that main computer is also located by Master Socket? 
    2. Infinity Hub by Master socket and Router in different room.
    Here I imagine that the router is connected to the hub via Homeplug/Ethernet. Again would the engineer be ok with this?
    3. Master socket is moved from Hallway to computer room.
    This would have the advantage of the hub, router and main computer all being located in the same place.  However I'm not clear if this can be done as part of the Infinity install or has to be ordered separately. Also I’m concerned about messy cabling.
    What I want to avoid is arranging for things temporarily (e.g. moving computer) on the install date, having the engineer declaring all is ‘OK’ and then later, if there is a problem, for BT to say I’m on my own.
    Let’s just say twice bitten in the past by BT/Openreach and three times shy.

    Oh, I have plenty of homeplugs and indeed Ethernet cables. My concern is if the engineer says he will not work with the homeplugs when doing the Infinity install.
    Sadly I have bitter experiences with BT/Openreach. One time they got me to open a broadband account for purposes of being a Fibre trialist when they should have checked that my faceplate was not compatible. They did compensate me a bit financially (after a great deal of hassle) but I still ended up with losses.
    It is a great pity that BT/Openreach still have an effective monopoly on Fibre.

  • Can i still use a care call phone line with infini...

    hi i have placed my order for bt infinity i have been thinking i have a care call phone for my dad which connects to the phone line via an adapter, can i still use it with infinity?
    or will the phone socket take away the compatability?

    If your care phone adapter is plugged into your BT socket,then if you get infinty installed I think that the only thing that the engineer will update is the master socket.
    He/she should fit a new faceplate to the socket for the infinty data line [it has 2 outlets],you will still have a normal phone outlet,and I think that your care phone adapter can be used as normal.
    But others might not agree.
    Keep an eye on this thread as pthers might post thier responces.

  • What is involved outside my house with an Infinity...

    Hi Folks,
    After looking over the very basic BT website and chatting with a customer care person on their live chat service, I was led to believe that for a new install of an Infinity FTTC set up, it would just entail the engineer changing over the faceplate of my BT master socket and installing the modem and hub inside my house.
    Just as I was nearing the end of the online sign-up process I was told that an engineer would have to make a visit prior to this to fit a box onto the outside of house.
    What is this box for? I thought that with a FTTC service that it would already use the existing copper cables and nothing new would need to be installed or changed outside of the house.
    I have my house wired with CAT 5 that all terminates under the stairs with my BT master socket and existing router.
    The incoming BT cable was run in before we plastered and there'll be no way for the engineer to get a cable from the outside box, to my wiring cupboard.
    So can someone tell me what this external box is for and if it is needed for a FTTC install?

    David - yes I do have a BT line and that's exactly what I thought would happen - just a simple face plate change in the house.
    Enigma - I assumed when I signed up that I would be getting the standard FTTC and therefore not need anything doing outside the house. This is why I was puzzled when on the sign up page, BT say that an engineer will have to do this first visit to fit the outside box (which one would assume is needed for FTTP in order to terminate the fibre somewhere)
    All I can think is that either they say that to every new sign up, or somwehere along the process they think I'm having FTTP, which I certainly didn't ask for.

  • BT Infinity - Modem and Router in separate rooms?

    My house is somewhat unusual in that the master socket is in the loft. It has a faceplate splitter into which all the phone extensions and the ADSL cable connect. The plasterboard on the bedroom ceilings is metal backed and when I tried locating the Home Hub in the loft the WiFi reception was very poor. To get round this I extended the ADSL line from the front of the master socket using the CAT5 that runs from the loft into most of the rooms. This set-up is currently working great and the WiFi and ADSL performance are very good indeed.
    What's I'd like to know is will I be able to use a similar set-up with Infinity? Ie extend the 'Infinity' side of the new master socket over CAT5 to the modem and router one floor below or (preferably) co-locate the Infinity modem with the master socket and run the modem - Home Hub connection over CAT5? The red BT Infinity socket on the back of Home Hub looks to be a regular RJ45 connection so I'm hoping the latter approach will work just fine, ie modem in the loft and Hub one floor below via CAT5.
    Any comments would be appreciated.

    The first suggestion is fine, but you will have to use a lead that has RJ11 heads on both ends. The DSL port on the Openreach modem will only accept an RJ11 head. (The DSL port on the new master socket will accept both RJ11 / 45. Your latter suggestion is fine and seems to be less hassle of the two. I've done it for several customers who've had LAN connections throughout their home.

  • BT Infinity 2 Installed today - Very Poor Speeds

    I have just had BT Infinity 2 installed today to an Openreach Engineer. The BT Wholesale Checker shows the following for my number:
    FTTC Range A (Clean) 59.3 43.7 16.2 10 -- Available
    FTTC Range B (Impacted) 49.7 26.7 16.2 7.4 -- Available
    But a wired speedtest.net result comes back with: just 22Mbps http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3287469432
    The Hub5 is plugged directly into the new faceplate that has been installed - and i dont have any extensions or anything like that to confuse things.
    I have gone into the Hub 5 connection status which shows:

    Downstream: 23.38 Mbps
    Upstream: 5.45 Mbps
    What can I do? as a 20Mb line is not much more impressive than the 7Mb i was getting on my traditional ADSL line.

    i would suggest leaving it for 10 days see if things improve as they do say there is a 10 day training phase, if nothing improves after that then i would come back see if you can get a mod to help you out as they are a good bunch here all uk based 

  • BT Infinity 1 - 2.4km from cabinet

    For years we have had BT Total Broadband 3 (ADSL) and after a lot of experimenting I managed to get actual download speeds of around 3.5Mbps / synching at 4096kbps (4.3km from exchange along main roads) by plugging adsl filter into the test socket and using a wireless phone instead of the extentions (I lost about 1Mbps if I plugged in the faceplate).
    Two weeks ago I upgraded to BT Infinity 1which I believe is fibre to cabinet and then copper wires - an engineer came and fitted a Openreach MK3 faceplate and installed a HH5. He told me that I only had 12Mbps (estimate 2.4km from cabinet) and then left pretty sharpish. By the time I had connected my laptop this had fallen to 10Mbps - and now it is about 5.5Mbps. When I ordered I was quoted 16-20Mbps.
    During the first few days our wireless devices kept disconnecting and I kept restarting the HH5 - until I read that this could be due to the dual frequency so I separated the signals and that seemed to sort it out. The speed has settled at around 5-6Mpbs which is very disappointing. I have contacted the helpsdesk several times but all they seem interested in doing is running speedtests and resetting the HH5 to factory default. 
    Please, does anyone know if there is anything I can do to increase the speed - or do I just have to put up with what I've got? An extra 2Mbps switching from ADSL to FTTC doesn't seem right to me!

    How confident are you that you are 2.4km from your cabinet ?  Bear in mind that phone lines do not always take the sortest route.
    If you are 2.4km from your cabinet and have a good clean line the following table gives an estimate of 13Mbps, viz :-

  • BT Infinity 2 HomeHub 5 DSL Re-sync issues?

    Hi All,
    I wonder if someone is able to assist. I recently migrated back to BT Infinity 2 Unlimited (FTTC) from Sky Fiber Unlimited (FTTC). (BT had a better package deal etc.) I had been with BT for several years prior to Sky without issues.
    This unfortunately is where my connection issues started.
    The setup with Sky Fiber was as follows:-
    Sky Hub connected to a BT OpenReach Modem (ECI type) connected to an ECI cabinet.
    Data rates were 40,000 Down - 8000 Up (Interleaved).
    This connection was very stable. It would stay connected for months at a time.
    The setup with BT is as follows:-
    BT HomeHub 5. (Yes, I know you just smiled!)
    After the 10 day period it settled at a data rate around 50,000 Down - 7000 Up (Interleaved).
    However, this modem re-syncs (not reboots) the DLS connection several times a day.
    The worst time of day is between 18.00 - 02.00hrs. If you want to game, stream or watch a movie on the YouView box you can forget about it. Last night between 18.00 - 01.00hrs it re-synced 14 times.
    The DLM has kicked in hard and the line stats at the moment are:-

    I have read the long thread about this and I am not saying that this is the cause, just reporting what the log says before the re-sync.
    I have also read alot of other threads that suggest the HomeHub 5 does like to re-sync alot for whatever reasons.
    As the data you collect from the HomeHub 5 is limited I decided to use an Asus DSL-AC68U to capture line data over a 24hr period to try and spot why the routers (Yes the Asus re-syncs on the line aswell) indicating its a line issue rather than a router issue.
    The results tend to show an high amount of CRC error / Error seconds just before the re-sync occurs.

    As you can see, the CRC and error seconds are alot higher than during the day.
    Here are the things I have tried to eliminate any electrical interference within the home that would be causing this:-
    1. Router directly into test socket with no internal wiring connected.
    2. Bought a new BT Mk2 vDSL/ADSL Faceplate for NTE5.
    3. Disconnected every electrial item in the home including the freezers.
    4. Tried different routers.
    What are your thoughts?
    To my understand it seems that the line is getting high levels of crosstalk/interference thats causing the re-syncs.
    As stated, online gaming, streaming and even watching a movie on the YouView box is too annoying for words.

    I did try connecting HH5 (Wan Port) to the OpenReach ECI modem but could not get the YouView box to work. It also kinda defeats the object of having an all in one unit. (Wifi on HH5 is weak hence I bought the Asus router.)
    The OpenReach modem is also locked so I cannot get any line stats from it to see whats happening and whether it re-syncs or not. I know I can buy an unlocked one from a certain website for about £40, but trying to get support from BT using tampered with items is not the way forward for me. Hope you understand.

  • Moving BT Infinity modem and HH3 router to another...

    Typically my master socket is in the dining room and all my IT kit is two floors up.  Was using HH3 as Total Broadband in my loft with ethernet connection out to my Apple Airport Extreme which ran the network - everything hunky dory but I wanted faster speed - hence Inifinty.
    BT Engineer had a look at my set up, started talking of bringing in a hoist into my back garden to install new Master Socket and it just seemed easier to install in the dining room and use the HH3 as router and re-configure my network - wrong!  Most devices lose contact with the HH3 on a regular basis, therefore I want to re-look at installing Infinity into the loft and revert the HH3 to a ethernet connection out to my Airport Extreme.  I understand all the engineers do at the master socket is install an Infinity faceplate.  I've tried replacing the loft extension with a split front BT master socket and moveed the Infinity faceplate - result; voice remains but no DSL on the white Open Reach modem.  
    Are there any suggestions what I need to do?  The original extension had four wires connections (white & blue, blue, orange & white, white & orange) but the BT master socket only has three positions and my original master socket only has two wires connected.

  • Have I been advised correctly on Infinity?

    I ordered Infinity yesterday and asked the sales consultant what the install involved. I was advised hardly anything. However, on doing my own research I understand there is a fibre modem that needs plugging into the master phone socket (and that I need two power sockets next to it).
    My phone line comes into a small utility room in my living room (it houses my alarm, electric meter etc) from the outside and when the engineer (a BT contractor) installed it, he placed the master socket next to my TV cabinet as requested. I also have two spare power sockets there so all fine in that respect.
    But I've got a very complex TV set-up and don't want to move my tv cabinet at all. I've got lots of equipment in the TV cabinet (including the home hub 3 modem) so if the engineer can simply plug the fibre modem into the master socket then I'll be fine. But have heard the engineer needs to install a new face plate on the master socket for an ethernet cable? And that there might be a data extension kit needed?
    Basically, I've spent hours running wires and phone lines under carpets and installing my equipment in the TV cabinet. If I now have to have additional wiring and start moving out all my equipment I'll probably cancel the order. Bit annoyed, as I checked more than once that the install wouldn't need much work but seems this isn't the case. Grateful for any help/replies from those who have had an install done.
