BT Infinity - line calibration and possible speed...

Hi,
We recently had BT Infinity installed (14-03-2013) and the speed has dropped significantly from 37 to about 20mb
Up load seems fairly consistent at 8mb
The engineer told us that the line calibration should only take 24hrs so I'm hoping there is an issue and that we can expect better than 20mb
We've been told to expect at least 25mb although it would be nice to get more
Can you advise how long the calibration should take and maybe check to see if everything is OK?
We have had to reset the router a couple of times
Please advise
Thank you

Solved!
Go to Solution.

You should never restart the Modem in the first 10 day period. In the first 10 days it will gather line Information then after it has enough on all levels it will decide where your line performed best at and set it at that speed. It will then continue to monitor the line forever and make adjustments. The reason why it's important that you do not disconnect the modem as the Cabinet (DLM) will not be able to make connection with the modem meaning it is recording this and will compensate by lowering the speed until it has a connection. Also turning it off suddenly can cause error bursts on top of that, so it is vital you give your line the best history that you can give it.
It will always look at previous history it has and make decisions from it. If it has bad history at the start it's very reluctant to actually improve the speed in future because it's seen it's not had good history in the past.  So it will slowly rise the line speed from 12Mbps to lets say 28Mbps. It will increase it increments due to your bad line history, if it has good say you maintained connection for 90 days and you suffered from a power cut and this put your speed to 20Mbps. Over the next 5/7 days you will normally see it jump straight up back to that speed. If you have bad history it will put the speed up slower and it can take 2/3 weeks for it to actually increase the speed as well.

  • Infinity 2 up and down speed, very slow, huge ping...

Hello wonderful friendly people, i'm looking for a bit of help to narrow down the cause of the terrible internet connection I have.
I live in a flat in a new build block in Bristol, just moved in with the owner who has had a few different connections with different providers in the last few years but have always been really bad service. He is now paying for Infinity 2 but we experience massively varying internet speed, as low as 0.25 Mb and as high as 20Mb download, but upload seems to be a bit more stable.
Streaming netflix, downloading files and general browsing is somtimes OK, but mostly terribly slow. It seems the speed goes up and down constantly, hitting rock bottom very often. Playing games is an absolute nightmare. Ping as low as 5, then shoots up to 500 meaning we can't play at all.
In short, paying a lot for terrible internet. The connection is through the phone line, we have a Homehub 3 but with an ADSL modem, i'm not sure we should be paying for Infinity if it's going through ADSL though? I thought Infinity was only phone line for the last bridge between house and local cabinet?
I think the problem is with dodgy cabling in the flats. From my experience this is where the problem points to but I want to be sure before I go to BT and ask for them to fix their line problems.
Here are some results from the last few days from speedtest.net
Can anyone help me with tests I can do to find where the problems lie, i.e. ping tests, trace routes and the like?
    Cheers!

Download speedachieved during the test was - 3.89 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 16 Mbps-77.43 Mbps .
     Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 77.43 Mbps
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 6.77Mbps
     Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 20 Mbps

  • Infinity Speed Very Slow and BT Speed Checker Not ...

Hi, I’m new here and I’m hoping someone can help me or point me in the right direction with an infinity issue.
I’ve had BT infinity for almost 12 months and everything speed wise has been fine until the last month or so.  My modem started to slowly die in January, but this has now been replaced by Kelly Services, the engineer who replaced the modem said the speed would now increase.  It hasn’t and I’m stuck on about a 3mb download connection which is what I was getting previously with Talk Talk.  I usually get a connection speed of between 20 – 30mb (currently advertised as up to 40mb).  I’ve tried numerous times to run the BT speed test whilst wired to the home hub but it fails every time at 96% just saying test error.
I’m currently using the bbc iplayer speed checker to see what I’m running at and have tried this using a wireless and wired connection and there’s very little difference between the two.
I have a home hub 2 with firmware version 4.7.5.1.83.2.11.2.6 (Type B) Last updated 20/11/11
I’ve reset the home hub to factory settings since the modem was replaced and this did fix another issue I was having where I could not connect new devices to the home hub without having to manually enter all the network details, but no joy with the connection speed.
Does anyone know if there is an alternative speed check I can use to get all the necessary details that BT will want to see or will this be one for the mods to check?
    Thanks

    Hi and Welcome.
It is the BT Speedtest results ( http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ ) that BT need.
The IP settings you've been put on and the speeds your achieving are important parts of the FTTC Diagnostic test.
(Might be interesting to try the Beta up to 24Mbps if you still can't get the main one to run... although it will not have the full info).
So can only suggest you try turning off the Modem and Home Hub 2 for a minute or so, then when powered back up try and run the FTTC diagnostic part when WIRED.
(Might be worth trying a different ethernet port on the HH2).
And if you can another laptop to be really certain where the fault lies.
If  the test fails again I would paste a copy of the failure in your thread as "AFTER REBOOT and ETHERNET PORT CHANGE" Test Results failure.
Then complete the BT Forum Mods contact form http://bt.custhelp.com/app/contact_email/c/4951
And add the URL of this form to the contact form, so BT can see the tests you've already tried and results.
They will contact you, it may take 72hrs or so due their workload.
Example of results the BT speedtest look like and improvement HERE.
Btw it's not recommended to turn the Modem off too often as that may trick the Exchange equipment (DLM) into thinking you have a line fault, and it could reduce the IP settings slowing down your broadband in an attempt to provide a reliable broadband.
An occasional turn off for testing or holidays will be ok though.
I've also had my modem replaced by Kelly, but still have it mounted vertically to make sure it's cooling vents work most efficiently. Make sure yours is still running cool.

  • Possible to use audio line out and in simultaneously ?

In the current version of MacBook Pro Retina is it possible to use the analog audio line out and line in both simultaneously ? That is playback as well as record analog audio at the same time.
Does anyone know what is the audio hardward platform (Codec, DAC, ADC, etc..) in this machine ?
    Thanks!

    Air has a headset jack.
    You can use a splitter
Mics should be USB capable for best results, almost all headset mics are junk quality.
then monitoring or listening thru the headphones
consider using a PRO MIC , such as an Audio Technica AT2020 USB

or better still use one of these with pro XLR mics:

I have recently been having seriously problems with my connection, every day the router appears to reset/crash, sometimes once and sometimes more than several times a day.
This was the speed I was getting in December, everything was fine.
Now this is the speed that I am getting.
I'm not sure how this is happening but I have been able to confirm that it isn't an issue within my household, there is only have one master socket which the router is connected to along with a wireless phone thats connected to it.
This is what the results that I got from the router.

I'd like to know if a conclusion could be brought to why my connection has been falling since December. Could it of had been a line switch? Because my connection was fine up until the start of this year.

    Hi lionheart1066
I see Imjolly was giving you a hand with this on another thread.
We still need to try and get you connected via the test socket to rule out external wiring and possible swap over micro-filters too.
I note you mentioned you have an I-plate.  Take this off, as it could be faulty, as you will then see the test socket.  If possible connect up via Ethernet and leave for a day or two and see if this stops the drops.
Its also important to look out for other sources of interference.  You can see a list of common offenders on this link.
If you have tried this out and are still having problems drop me in an email please with your BT account and telephone number along with a link back to this thread.
Just send using the contact us form in my profile under the 'about me' section and mark FAO Craig please.
    Thx

  • BT Infinity 2 dropped over 25% speed last few week...

Got BT Infinity 2 in Dec 2013 (been with BT since 2000 always had my landline & internet with them). 80 Mb Down 19 mb Up very happy with it as I also got download speeds up to 100Mb. However, in the new year it has gradually gotten very slow especialy in the last 2 weeks or so.
For the last week it has been around 59-61Mb Down & 12-17 Mb up. Massive drop from new. Nothing has changed in my home or on my PC. I connect via wired ethernet to the BT Home Hub 5. I was doing the speed tests every few weeks & always got 74-5 Down & 18-19 Mb Up until the last few weeks. I first noticed this when downoading a game I bought from Steam about 3 weeks ago I just put it down to congestion but then started to notice other things being very slow to download & several websites also slow to browse. In the last 2 weeks I have noticed this a lot.
Today I raised a call with BT support gave them all the info here they just gave me a generic reply saying 50-60% of what they advertise is not enough to investigate further (despite it being sold to me as up to 76Mb as I live within 1.5 miles of my local exchange in West London).
I have tried powering the HH5 down then rebooting it & or hitting the reset button on it but it makes no difference (I only did this twice over 2 weeks as I know all about what happens if you do this too often BT interpret it as a line fault & drop the speed further).
Is there anything else I can do as clearly its getting worse I do not think its just a case of I should accept what I have been told as you can see from the logs its a pretty stabe line. I have pasted some logs below thanks in advance for any advice/help offered.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Just another update I have now asked BT to rest my IP profile. I am convinced there is something wrong with mine:
1: 2 weeks ago the speed started to get worse.
2: 1 week ago I reset the HH5 back to factory defaults.
3: Nothing has changed speed wise in the last week.
My current profile is: 63/18 (it was 80/20 for the first 2 months).
I can download up to 70Mb from Steam or Origin despite my IP profile being locked to 63 Mb right now. For the 1st 2 months I could download @ 95-100Mb.
I think the IP profile is locked as my line has always been stable.
If BT India are not prepared to reset my IP profile I take this to the CEO of BT next that seems to be the only way to sort this out!

  • Local lines upgraded but my speed stays the same

Hello, i'm currently on the Broadband option 3 (20meg unlimited), and when we took it out we were told that our lines would only support around 8mb but there was scheduled work in the pipeline that would give us a speed increase.
Now this work has completed and the website quotes a possible speed of 17mbps on our line, but my home hub still shows us as 8mb.
Can anyone explain the process to getting this changed? I've been happy with the service (especially as they were up front about the realistic speeds I would get) so that's not an issue, but if i'm paying for 20mb and It's in the ground...then that's what I want to see on my connection!

    Hello,
Good news. We’ve upgraded our network in your area
Remember we let you know we were rolling out our faster broadband? We’ve now done it in your area. We always offer the fastest speed your line can take and now your broadband speed and connection should be faster and more stable than before.
You can find out more at www.bt.com/networkupgrade
We’re sorry if you lost your broadband and phone connections for a few minutes during the upgrade, but they should be working again now.
If you received that email then you don't normally have to agree another contract to get the upgrade - only if you want the upgrade in advance of it being made available to all on the  exchange.
Depending on your distance from the exchange you could be upgraded to 21cn but not get any increase in speed.  Check the modulation in your router and if 992.1 you have not been upgraded.  21Cn is 992.3 or 992.5

  • Matching FI Line Items and Total Records for FM

    Dear Friends,
Currently, we are implementing Public Sector Management using Former Budgeting.
Some PR and PO has been created, before the FM budget data transferred from Cost Center Planning using FM9C.
Using FMRP_2FMB4002 report, the u2018Available Amountu2019 still equal to u2018Curr. Budget Amountu2019, even though we can display the detail PR and PO by double-click the column u2018Assignedu2019 and u2018Commts/Act.u2019 in this report.
After executing RFFMRC04, system shows many line items containing Fund Center, Commitment Items, and its Amount.
I need your assistance to resolve these issues, so that the FM Report can be analyzed accordingly.
    Thanks for your kind attention.

  • Advice on buying camera for stills and high speed video

    Hello video pros,
I'm a music composer who occasionally dallies with some simple photographic and video work. I'm looking for some advice re picking up a camera to make some simple videos, but with the highest quality I can get with consumer grade gear.
I am pretty much ruling out consumer grade camcorders for two reasons:  One is that I want to be able to shoot high quality stills and make stop motion videos from very high res stills.  The other is that I don't need audio recording at all because the video will always be just to accompany music - simple music videos basically.  So I'm much more interested in the recent mid range point-and-shoot bridge cameras with full HD video modes rather than camcorders - they seem to cover more realistically the range of things I want to do.
My main question is regarding shooting at higher frame rates than 30 fps. I'd like to shoot video at a minimum of 60 fps (or higher) to then playback at 25 fps to get that smooth, slightly dreamy motion effect. There are a few cameras out there that offer high speed video modes, but most are nothing more than a gimmick because the res is so low that the resulting video is unusable.  However a few cameras now seem to hit a sweet spot, offering 60 fps recording at HD res, and also 120 fps at 640x480 which (at a pinch) is usable, at least for stuff destined for simple web use.
The cameras I've narrowed it down to so far seem to be the Nikon Coolpix P500, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ40 and possibly the Fujifilm HS20 EXR.  I also was vaguely interested in the Casio Exilim HS cameras, but they seem to only offer high speed video modes that are pointless - 1000 fps at a completely useless low res, and 120 fps only at 640x480.  The others I listed seem to offer at least 60 fps at some kind of HD res, so I'm assuming that with these cameras I could shoot decent looking video which would then play back with that slightly hyper real slow-mo effect when I import into FCP at 25 fps.  Is this correct?  Or is it the case that when they say HD video @ 60fps, it's some kind of interlaced mode which means you can't play back at a slower frame rate to get smooth slow motion?
The other thing I've noted is that all of these cameras do record HD video, but it's always compressed in H264 format.  I understand that this puts a serious limitation on how much post-processing you can do to the video afterwards.  Highly compressed video will begin to show image artefacts very quickly when you apply effects as opposed to higher quality (bigger file size) video compression.  But I think I can live with that given that for the stuff I want to make, it will just be simply edited and only lightly graded.  However, of the cameras I'm looking at, the Lumix also records in a format called AVCHD which (I think) does full HD at 17 Mbps.  Does this mean that it's basic video quality is significantly better than the other choices?  That said, from the specs it's unclear if it actually allows shooting at higher frame rates which you can slow down at playback.. the way it describes 60fps mode makes it sound like it's just interlacing so you don't actually get a higher number of images per second to then be able to play back at a lower frame rate.  This for me might rule it out because I really want the creative effect of high speed video, even if it's only the subtle effect of 60 fps slowed down to 25.
So in summary, I'm looking for a camera capable of creative shooting (high quality stills to make stop motion videos, usable-quality HD video along with at least some degree of high speed video at a resolution that is still usable) to make interesting and artistic footage to accompany music.  The destination medium is the web, so even though I'd like to get the best quality raw material to work with, the final destination is not exactly a cinema screen.  As a pro in a related industry, I'm all too aware of the pointlessness of buying outlandishly over-specced gear that is far beyond your level of expertise.  So I want to keep it simple and realistic, budget-wise, given the level I'm at.  Nothing more than say $800 US.  A seriously high end camera would be wasted on me, and I think it would be wiser to invest in useful accessories like a steadicam merlin and decent tripod rather than blow loads of cash on a camera far beyond my skill level.
Apologies for the long post, any and all advice would be very welcome and appreciated!  And feel free to correct me if my assumptions are wrong, and suggest any gear that I should consider looking at.

Hi, thanks for your input.  I'm aware of the fact that my question is a bit OT, but I'm just looking for input from people with more experience and broader information in this area than I have myself.. I know people are here to talk about FCP, but I'm betting many editors and film makers who work with FCP will have more insight in this area than I do.
I've been reading every review I can find at dpreview, and also am watching as many test video examples I can find on the internet, mostly on vimeo because the ones on youtube look pretty awful.  I just am reaching out to get some actual experience and advice from people who might give me pointers on what to look out for.
As for 60fps not being fast enough, I know what you're saying.  But for me, even 60 fps slowed down to 25 fps on playback is enough of an interesting effect, as long as the actual quality of the footage looks good to start off with.  I like the subtle effect of slightly slower than real motion when it's real, bona-fide high frame rate slowed down.  Artificially created slow-mo using plug ins looks cheesy to me, and the gimmicky super high frame rates of cameras like the casio exilim (where the resolution looks like a mobile phone video from ten years ago) are completely useless.
I've seen lots of examples on vimeo of stuff shot with DSLRs from Canon and Nikon at 60fps and then played back at 25 or 24, and it looks plenty nice enough for what I'm after.  But am I kidding myself that I'd get anything near as nice with the price range I'm looking at?

  • Command line parameters and resuming

    Hi,
I am researching for a client who wishes to have several students (K-12) using Adobe Captivate course on the same computer. Another constraint is that a course is run from DVD (1+ GB in size) so it's published as standalone application (.exe for Windows, .app for Mac). Quick questions:
Can a course have an action to parse command line parameters? I haven't found that.
Explanation: this would be used to simply parse a name and e-mail address (if possible) and last module passed to a course player. Resuming could be disabled (there is an answer how to do that in the forum) or overridden but the learner should be transferred to a slide to resume based on the calling parameter (and not the default resuming - there will be several users so each must resume from the last passed module slide).
Can a progress of the current learner using the course be saved to a database (no LMS, e-mail, Acrobat.com etc)?
Explanation: this is needed for the current learner and for each one separately. I guess I already have a solution in mind (custom application, having small internal web server like Mongoose, with a script that replaces internalServerReporting.php and saves the data to a internal database, SQLite). But for this to work spawning a course with command line parameters and course itself reading these parameters would need to work.
If there is a (better) solution for the above, please reply. The goal is have minimal changes on the course e.g. if there are command line parameters, then parse them and do something (mark modules passed, open appropriate next slide). If parameters are not given/recognized, do nothing (so the course would still work on computers used by one learner only, including resuming etc).
My opinion is that this should also be one-way as much as possible. E.g. additional application handles user name, e-mail and current progress and spawns Captivate course. The published course itself should not depend on the application like reading progress from a text file (though an URL call could return current progress from an application for the same user name). So ideally only changes to use internal server publishing to save current progress and adding a logic to check parameters at start would be applied to a course.
    Waiting for your smart answers.
    Matt

DVDs, when finalized, are read-only... so unless you are considering to do an Install of the course from the DVD to the machine, you're not going to be able to write to a database.  A USB stick may be more suitable in this situation.
Command line params are not possible with EXEs unless you create your own EXE wrapper.  If you're going to go through that trouble, you'd be better off creating an Adobe Air application that can run your local web content without security restrictions and use SQLite or some other backend to store the data.
Can the progress be saved?  It depends what you mean by progress.  If you just want to allow the student to resume from the slide where they left off... you can do that with a bit of JavaScript.  However, if you want to ensure that any previous questions answered on a quiz were also resumed and intact from the previous session... not possible without an LMS.
Why not run a Moodle installation via a USB stick and you can have a full featured LMS with a database and ability to resume a previous session?

    Just some things to consider...

  • Factory Defaults in Mac Mini and Possible Trade-Up?

Hi, beforehand, please direct all answers if possible to [email protected] Thanks in advance.
I have questions that have probably been answered or maybe not, so I'm sorry in advance.
I'd like to restore my Mac Mini to its factory defaults. Since I'm a Windows-user-almost-turned-Mac-user, I'm still learning, but it's just difficult for me. The reason I'd like to do this is so that I can hopefully sell it and eventually buy a Macbook with the money I get on it.
That being said, I'd also like to ask if there is possibly a way I can bring my Mac Mini to, say, a local Apple Store and "trade up" to a Macbook--and pay whatever difference with cash. Again, I'm very new to this, so thank you all for your forebearance.
I hope to hear from any of you soon. Have a great day and weekend, and Happy Father's in advance to you fathers.

Easy enough to do, insert the install disc, restart the Mac and hold the C key down. You can select erase and install, which wipes everything out, or archive and install which preserves your home folder.
if there is possibly a way I can bring my Mac Mini to, say, a local Apple Store and "trade up" to a Macbook
If you are in the 14 day purchase period then yes you can do a return/purchase. After that no, and in fact I don't know any computer company that will let you trade up to another model after you go beyond the return period.
The mini and Macbook are nearly identical in specs and the speed difference in the mini's clock rate is minimal. If you need a portable solution I suggest you purchase the Macbook as opposed to the mini. I own both and I'm very pleased with both of them and I think either one you buy will be a great computer to work and play with

  • New line break and extra blank space characters disappear after submit form?

    Hello,
I have a PDF form with a Submit button that is dynamically created in my code to send the form data to the server in HTML format.
After the form data is received on the server side, all strings with new line break and extra blank spaces are gone.
For example, if I enter string in a text field as shown below on the form:
    Hello   ,
    this is
        just a
    test
After the form data is sent to the server, this string would become:
Hello , this is just a test
New line breaks are gone. Also, if there is more than 1 blank space character between 2 characters, the extra blank space characters would be removed as well.
It does not only happen to multi-line text field, even with single-line text field. If I have a string like this in a single-line text field:
Hello         this is just              a         test
After the form data is sent to the server, it would become:
Hello this is just a test
The form is created in OpenOffice then converted to PDF. The Submit button is created in my program using iText.  I have no idea it is iText that trims my string or PDF itself does it.
Can anyone give me any possible explanation? Thanks.

That is not what I get. Since it's URL-encoded, spaces are represented by the "+" character and carriage returns are represented by the "%0d%0a" (cr/lf) sequence.
Are you looking at the actual data that getting sent to the server or the output from the server after it processes it?
