BT infinity massive slowdown

My BT infinity which previously averaged 37meg download, now struggles to get over 1meg download. Have rebooted modem numerous times and no difference download speed not what I'm am paying for. Not really the greatest introduction to BT as this was the reason I left Virgin. Have I jumped from the frying pan into the fire?
Any solution greatfully accepted.
Mark

Keep modem reboots down to a minimum; they can be misinterpreted as errors by DLM and cause DLM to lower your allowed speed.  Rebooting the router (or disconnecting/reconnecting in the web interface) won't do any harm.
One possible reason for such a drop is incorrect installation, for example star wiring, see bottom of post.
As well as the profile etc Ray has asked for, what was the estimated speed?
http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome and enter your telephone number.
Are you running wired or wireless?  It is best to do tests wired even if you can't regularly use wired; as that narrows down where the problem may be.
~~~
A fairly common form of miswiring is star wiring. This is where extensions are taken off a junction box between the incoming telephone feed and the master socket. These extensions may be regular telephone extensions, or may be SkyBoxes or alarms. Those can cause serious issues. It can be quite bad even if the extension isn't used, much worse if the extension is used. If the extension is used, an old ADSL filter can make the issues marginally less bad.
Star wiring was not a problem with regular telephones (often installed in GPO days), or even a significant problem with ADSL. It wreaks havoc with VDSL/FTTC/Infinity. It is often not noticed by installers. I asked my installer about it because it seemed odd, and he explicitly said it didn't matter (eg, he coulnd't be bothered). There seem to be lots of evidence that subcontractors are more likely to miss/ignore it than real Openreach staff (I can't remember who got mine wrong).
  • BT Infinity - Massive Speed Drop !
    I had BT Infinity 2 installed 12 days ago and have been more than happy with the performance..... until now. The connection stats below speak for themselves. The HH5 current connection status is first, followed by a speedtest last Sunday morning and a speedtest this morning at 11:30am. My IP profile is the same but the download speed has dropped by over 200% ! Should I reboot the HH5 and, if so, will DLM kick in and reduce my IP profile ?
    I have now rebooted the HH5 and the IP Profile for the line has stayed the same at 77.43MBPS but the download speed is only 31.20MBPS which is way off what I had previously and should be getting.
  • All Gawker websites cause massive slowdowns, Not Responding status (but it rarely crashes), and don't always load properly, regardless of the number of open tabs or programs.
    Any time I navigate to one of the Gawker Media sites, Firefox slows down massively. The page loads extremely slowly, and the program freezes up. I often get a (Not Responding) message up at the top of the screen. Other programs on my computer are unaffected. This rarely (only twice in dozens of tries) actually crashed Firefox. It eventually comes back and everything runs fine, on that tab and others, until I try to move to or add another Gawker Media page. Occassionally the Gawker sites don't seem to load properly, but I suspect that may be an unrelated issue, caused by ABP or NoScript blocking ads or pop-ups on individual pages.
  • Massive Slowdown of 75/35 in Virginia - Tests fast, works v.slow
    I'm here in Northern Virginia and probably around Halloween or earlier, practical FiOS speeds dropped dramatically. I have 75/35 and have been getting consistent hardwired speeds of about 0.5MB/s-1.2MB/s. Although Speedtest.net and Verizon's own speedtest site show healthy burst speeds (tonight's results appended below), any practical usage slows to an absolute crawl. iTunes downloads and App updates drop to about 0.5MB/s. Vimeo and YouTube vary wildly from 0.3MB/s - 3.6MB/s. I mean from second to second, the speeds spike up and down over a ten-fold range. The same situation exists for my wife's iMac via wifi.
    Here is my test result from Verizon's speed test. BTW, they have no updated diagnostic or tuning tools to work for Mac users. Surely the half-dozen or so of us merit a bit more love than this. Of course I can't make heads or tails of the output. Perhaps a Verizon operative can help.
    Note: I spent about an hour on chat with a Verizon support person checking the outside box and resetting my router. He even took over via GoToAssist for a bit but still not dice. Same situation and no help so I'm guessing the issue is upstream. And I keep strong active antivirus on at all times and I do not p2p share or torrent (iTunes addict here) so I can't imagine I'm being throttled.
  • Massive Slowdown Help!
    Okay, I have a 2008 Black MacBook:
    2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM running OS 10.6.5
    I am receiving the rainbow beach-ball loading icon for most apps (Safari, Mozilla, any Microsoft, Preview, etc. Name it, it does it...) as well as my beloved MacBook crashing often. The computer stays elevated to allow heat diffusion under to prevent overheating (ALWAYS have. Never sits on a surface that could fry my computer!) and I don't leave it running for extensive periods of time as well as shutting it off frequently, keeping up-to-date on updates etc.
    I have been actively researching this slow-down/crashing issue and I have performed the following steps thus far:
    Activity Monitor and Disk Utility
    AM RESULTS:
    No cumulative usage above ~25-30 % CPU.
    Memory Usage:
    Space Utilized 139.45 GB
    Space Free 110.26 GB
    Finding that these critical pieces of information are seemingly optimal or "ok" (below 30% CPU & over 37% free space), I moved on to the next piece of research that I came across, Disk Utilities. When I ran this (both verify and repair permissions to be safe), I have seen no results. I investigated all SUID Warnings that I have as well as Permission differences, each individually, and found they were considered normal. I keep my cache/cookies/history clean on both browsers to reduce non-useful information that could reduce optimal performance.
    DU RESULTS:
    Permissions: Normal
    Verification: Normal
    Preliminary research out of the way, what is there that I can do to revitalize my CPU processing speed to what it used to be or closer to, as well as protect my MB from crashing?
    P.S. I do not run more than two to three applications at a time ever nor do I use the spaces app for additional desktops since it's known to be glitchy.
    P.S.S. THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP RECEIVED!
    Sincerely,
    An Advent Apple User
    Late 2008 Black MacBook 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM running OS 10.6.5
    I checked Page-outs section and it's saying approximately 105.1 MB at the current moment.
    That's not a huge amount, particularly if that value grows slowly. Consider that if you upgraded your RAM you'd probably be adding at least 10 times that amount.
    How do I find what my maximum allowed RAM is
    There are several ways to determine that. One is this Web site:
    http://www.crucial.com/mac/index.aspx
    Use the "Crucial Mac Memory Advisor Tool" on the right to learn about your options.
    where may I purchase the upgrades for a reasonable price.
    Crucial's prices aren't bad and they have a good reputation for quality. I bought RAM from them two years ago for a PowerBook. You could also do a Web search.
    Also on a side note, I cracked my screen recently and I am looking to replace it. Where can I order the screen to replace it?
    You might check with iFixit (http://www.ifixit.com/). They also have instructions on doing it yourself, although that's probably not the type of job I'd try myself.
    I think I may have found a Mac Certified place that can do it (ship off to California where they can upgrade the screen as well!)
    I've dealt with these people http://www.keanesf.com/ when they went by the name of PowerBook Guy. Perhaps that's the one you mean.
    Gloss or no gloss?
    That's a decision you'll have to make yourself.
  • Xorg - Excessive CPU usage causes massive slowdown.
    Hello there forums.
    Ever since the installation of Arch I've had the strange problem of having my Xorg process randomly (but quite frequently) spike up to 100% or somewhere within those reaches. This renders the computer totally unusable (think alsa-mixer lagging like crazy) for an average of two seconds, repeating a couple of times over the next minutes, whereafter it generally gives me a break.
  • KSFETCH- causing massive slowdown on MDD 10.5x - how to disable
    GOOGLE IS PLAYING THE SLIME MASTER ROLE
    Below are several examples of how to disable this bull roar
    from taking precious system resources.
    EVEN ON OLDER MACS - (I used MDD running 10.5x)
    This started happening to me probably around May or June.
    My computer was Held down in some unknown process and then
    I installed Little Sntich - and BINGO it's KSFETCH the little
    hidden installer that is accessed multiple times daily by Google
    to (?).
    My computer was rendered almost unusable when these updates would occur
    and it was HORRIBLE because they happen so frequent.
    Does anyone know why LITTLE SNITCH does not have a
    simple area where you can have the Name blocked as
    KSFETCH ? Instead of the IP ect? I thought it would have this feature
    but no  and KSFETCH gets around this with Keystone
    by changing the IP last digit every call.
    Amazingly simple and effective.
    Google is the robot to fear.
    IMPORTANT
    THERE ARE AT LEAST  2 library folders.  (depending on how many users on system)One for root user (current user) and one for
    administrator (master file set)
    You want to target your Master file set first and then do your users LIbray folders.
    method 1:
    USING TERMINAL :
    http://forums.obdev.at/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6720
    by buzzart » Fri Jun 29, 2012 4:27 am
    To stop the ksfetch (Google's auto-updater software) from checking every hour run the following in terminal:
    defaults write com.google.Keystone.Agent checkInterval 604800
    604800 is a week in seconds. Divide by 7 to check daily.
    Keystone agent is generating a new temporary executable file on each update check. This is why Little Snitch is asking repeatedly for permission. If Little Snitch were updated to allow regex for name checking then this could be solved. No doubt this would introduce other issues that would need to be considered.
    method 2 :
    USING TERMINAL :
    I have deleted files in LaunchAgents and made the Google files inaccessible = permissions 000 and ksfetch keeps running every hour. The "Do No Harm" company is full of it.
    method 3 :
    MANUAL method
    Go to /Library/Google/ and copy it to your desktop. delete GoogleSoftwareUpdate, Lock it and replace it with your old one.
    method 4 :
    MANUAL method
    first go to your home folder, then to the library folder.  Inside the library folder you will find a folder called Google.  Inside the google folder there is a folder named GoogleSoftwareUpdate.  Highlight this folder and click cmd  i.  The window that pops up is what you need.  At the bottom of this window, you will find sharing and permissions. This is where you would change the settings for the folder.
    That is cmd plus the i key. (⌘+i) simultaneously.
    The same dialogue box can be accessed by right-clicking on the folder and selecting 'get info'.
    Incidentally, if you trash the contents of the folder and then lock the folder (checkbox at the top of the info window) that will also prevent anything being written to it.
    This seems to be a better / easier way.  In finder go to /Users/YourUserName/Library/Google
    Then right click "get info" or CMD I and change the permissions on the "Google Folder" too read only and lock it.
    You can also do this via terminal for advanced users.
    This  works for Hands Off or Little Snitch in fact you can delete "all the  rules" for KsFetch and it hasn't come back for me in a long time.
    This  may interfere with Google software updates so if your Google stuff  breaks just change the permissions back and update. Then change back if  necessary.
    You can also use the wildcards in Hands Off and  Little Snitch they do work as well. If you the recent versions. Google  it to learn how to use the wildcards.
  • Security update=massive slowdown?
    Yesterday I installed the latest security update.  Since then, my macbook is running extremely slowly.  Not just internet browsing, but everything, iTunes, Pages, mail.  All of it.  Anyone have any ideas how to fix this?   I got the spinning wheel of death 3 times while trying to type this!
    Thanks for any help,
    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
    There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) on the advice of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
    ☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
    ☞ Paste into the window of another application.
    ☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
    ☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
    The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
    and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
    If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
    to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
    If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
  • Massive Slowdown when loading webpage
    Firefox become incredibly slow when loading in a webpage, especially ones with a lot of flash content. The progress wheel would lag, and scrolling will be jaggy etc. I am forced to switch to Chrome because this issue is getting on my nerves.
    Hello,
    Some problems with Flash video playback can be resolved by disabling hardware acceleration in your Flash Player settings. (See [[Flash Plugin - Keep it up to date and troubleshoot problems|this article]] for more information on using the Flash plugin in Firefox).
    To disable hardware acceleration in Flash Player:
    #Go to this [http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues Adobe Flash Player Help page].
    #Right-click on the Flash Player logo on that page.
    #Click on '''Settings''' in the context menu. The Adobe Flash Player Settings screen will open.
    # Click on the icon at the bottom-left of the Adobe Flash Player Settings window to open the Display panel. <br/> <br/>[[Image:fpSettings1.PNG]] <br/>
    # Remove the check mark from '''Enable hardware acceleration'''.
    # Click '''Close''' to close the Adobe Flash Player Settings Window.
    # Restart Firefox.
    This [http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/help01.html Flash Player Help - Display Settings page] has more information on Flash Player hardware acceleration, if you're interested.
    Does this solve the problem? Let us know.
  • Massive slowdowns when using Airport Extreme
    Hi everyone,
    I'm pulling my hair out over this problem. I have a 50/5 cable connection which deteriorates in an unacceptable manner as soon as I connect to the web wirelessly using my almost brand new Airport Extreme Base station (bought this August). I have an Ubee EVM 3200 cable modem, and as long as I plug my laptop directly into it, I get the advertised speeds and pings at around 20 ms. However, as soon as I involve my Airport Extreme, everything falls apart: my downstream drops to about 25Mbits (sometimes lower) and my ping goes up to 40-50 ms. Upload speeds remain intact, for some reason.
    Now, the base station is situated about five meters from my Macbook Pro and signal strength is supposedly very good. Even if I sit down right next to it, my speeds are still only half of what I should be getting. I also tried pingtest.net, which wasn't even able to test for packet loss. So, what am I doing wrong here? Is my Airport broken? Is there some kind of problem between the Airport Base Station and the modem? Or am I just stupid and there's some trivial setting that's causing all this?
    I've already tried this fix: http://discussions.apple.com/messag...321416#11321416
    It vastly improved my ping (to about 20, where it should normally be), but speeds are still terrible.
    I'd be very grateful to hear your comments.
    The picture did not load, but I assume that it displays the signal strength of about 68% that you mention. Are there other networks displayed as well?
    Users are very confused about signal strength. They see 5 "bars" on the Airport icon at the top of the computer screen and think that is 100%, 4 bars = 80%, etc. +The "bars" are there just for show+. As you may now have guessed, they tell you nothing about the actual signal strength or noise on the network.
    Your AirPort Extreme radiates a signal primarily in an upward spherical pattern from the device...360% degrees, so the signal goes all over the place like an expanding balloon. Some of the signal is absorbed by any close obstructions...a wall, ceiling, cabinet, etc. This cannot be avoided.
    A reading of 68% represents a very strong signal. If you think about it, it would be impossible for the computer to receive 100% of the signal that is radiated when a third of it, on average, is absorbed by any nearby obstructions.
    But there is more, and it can get complicated. You need to use the Inspector feature (Edit menu) of iStumbler to calculate a much more important measurement than signal strength alone. You need to calculate the Signal to Noise Ratio, or SNR. This is the most useful measurement that you can use to evaluate the quality of a wireless signal. Post back if you want to work through this.
  • Massive slow down after update
    Hi, I have Nokia n95-1 and my problem is that today I've updated my firmware from 30.0.015 to 31.0.017 and encountered massive slowdown of phone. If I press menu button I must wait 20sec, others option works even slower. I have newest pcsuite, updater and drivers. My phone is unusable now as I can even see how particular parts of UI are drawn on screen. Any suggestions?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.
    Try to find in this directory. Assuming that you are using Windows XP
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nokia\Nokia Service Layer\A
    Once you find this directory, delete all the files in it & close Windows Explorer. Connect your phone and run NSU. The standard GUI will appear to update your software but this time, NSU will re-download your firmware from NSU servers.
    I suspected that the firmware that you first downloaded got some CRC or any errors during downloading and even after you re-flashed for second or third times, NSU still using the 'corrupted' firmware that you previously downloaded in that directory.
    Do remember to backup all your data/contacts before updating the firmware....
  • Extreme slowdown with long articles
    Hi,
    We're working on a DPS catalog, a very LARGE catalog, in which some of the articles contain many page, each with a set of interactive overlays (mostly 2-5 MSOs). The longest up to now is a 44MB article with 230 pages.
    Yes, we know that V swipe of so many pages is not the most logical thing.
    We've been experiencing a massive slowdown in the scrolling behavior of long articles.
    On iPad 3, it's slow but works.
    On iPad 2 it's a bit slower and tends to crash after 50-60 pages.
    On iPad 1 it crashes after 15-20 pages.
    After switching the article to Horizontal swipe, the behavior is back to normal and there are no more crashes on iPad 1 and 2.
    Are there any DPS guidelines to working with long articles?
    Is there a page loading scheme that we should be aware of?
    Adi, if secrurity terms of the project allow that, send me an original file (few pages), may be I find the problem.
  • Extreme System Slowdown!
    Ugh! I hope this issn't how this machine usually functions...I am experienceing massive slowdowns, so extreme that I must wait 5 minutes for a web page (BroadBand) Or simply reboot. Pentium 4 2.66 Ghz. Standard heatsink/paste. What the heck is causing this!?!? Overheating of CPU? For those of you that read my video card problem, I fixed that so that isn't the problem, But this is beginning to worry me. On a quite lighter note, I got a 2019 on 3dMark '03.
      maybe you should try UNoptimising some of your processes to see if you can sort the problem out.
    i'm not having a dig here, i'm speaking from experience, but you can think you're tweaking settings for the better, when in fact you're making things worse...
    I think he was referring to the Services, which = processes in Task Manager.  You can configure the Services that startup as automatic, manual, or never.
  • My experience - Slow processing of previews is killing performance?
    Set up:
    24" iMac, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8Ghz, 4Gb RAM, Radeon HD2600 with 256Mb, 1Tb 7200 Seagate Barracuda HD.
    Aperture 3.02, RAW 3.01
    OSX 10.6.3
    Problem: In a project where previews are turned on, any change to a photo needs sloooow processing of the preview.
    Take a Canon 5D Mark II RAW photo (25Mb or so) with some simple adjustments.
    If I remove the curves adjustment (auto) I have an entry on the activity window for 90 seconds saying the photo is processing.
    Adding a curves adjustment takes 100 seconds of processing before I even make a change.
    If I then hit the Auto button it takes 120 seconds of processing.
    Very recently I have
    1) used all three of the cmd-alt options to rebuild/repair the library
    2) Cleared all caches and deleted the aperture plist and a RAW plist file mentioned in another thread
    3) Copied the library to another disk and back to de-fragment it
    So I hope there are no problems with my library.
    If I try the above actions after turning off previews the processing is down to 4 to 6 seconds for a photo.
    Is anyone else seeing this massive slowdown with previews?
    Is anyone seeing fast performance with previews on large photos?
    I usually work with previews off and build them at the end of my workflow, but I'd like to know if I have a problem with my library / install.
    Hi...I have the exact same machine as you except for the external drive. Also, I shoot RAW with a Nikon D300 (+/- 12 MB file). I'm far to be seeing the same performance as you. Processing is much faster, I would say about 2 sec for a photo. The only thing I would do if you haven't done it already is to set preview size to no larger than your screen resolution (for the 24'' iMac is "Fit within 1920 X 1920" )with a quality no higher than 6.
