BT Infinity or TalkTalk Fibre Upgrade?

Hi, I'm currently with TalkTalk but my download speed is under 2Mbps and upload under 0.5Mbps due to attenuation of 60dB as I live over 4km from the exchange. I can now upgrade for £25 + £10/month to fibre upto 40Mbps down/2Mbps up on TalkTalk I think at anytime (to be confirmed if I need to wait until end of contract or not) or I can wait and leave to BT or get BT Infinity on a new line for free at just over £40/month for unlimited upto 40Mbps/10Mbps. Speed check gives me 24.6Mbps at my post code on BT/TT, 2Mbps upload on TT, 7Mbps upload on BT.
My question is as I do use aMule and torrents to transfer large files (Amiga, C64 collections, Fedora linux distribution, freeware etc.) as well as filesonic and rapidshare would moving to BT block me doing this? A member on TT forums suggested BT was a no-no due to the heavy throttling employed and more congestion.

At the moment my torrents are downloading at 150kB/s and uploading 12kB/s (max speeds I set) but aMule hasn't been working properly for sometime, mostly at 0kB/s down / 12kB/s up. I could live with the 150kB/s download (say 1200-1800kbps through the modem-router) still during peak times with BT but I've heard it is worse than this, closer to 0kbps then full speed after 12:30am. Of course I can stay up until then and make sure my computer hasn't crashed so can download all night and check it 6am when I get up for work but I'd like at least a bit of speed the rest of the time. Also are other traffic affected such as Youtube, iPlayer, Facebook, filesonic, rapidshare etc. during peak times? The only problem I've got with TT is my downloads freeze and have to restart and videos keep rebuffering and unwatchable in anything higher than 320x240 resolution so no HD but that's the fault of my poor line I think. The freezing problems occur on all my devices so it's not just a single computer, smart phone, games console or player. I have tried several routers all with the same problem and only the Comtrend CT-5372 ADSL2+/VDSL2 router I use now is maintaining a connection 24/7 most of the time.
I have however heard many negatives about TalkTalk and that all ISPs throttle just the same. So do BT throttle all the time or not and is it all weekend or just 3pm or 6pm to 12am Mon-Sun and is it a straight hard on/off 3MB/s down to 0kBs?
Also BT used to have a limit of 300GB transfer on Infinity, am I right this has been lifted or will I get a letter if I constantly download without counting how much I've transferred? I expect I may use at least 300GB watching HD videos and downloading stuff as I don't do much else lol. Would I be better off with the business package just in case?

So does that mean no torrent throttling or is it just the same as the residential BT Infinity at a higher price? Also what is the contention ration for business, is it 1:1 or 25:1 or so compared to 50:1 for residential?

also remember that bt also add uploads to your limit so you can use 300gb by uploading 250gb and downloadin 60gb

On Infinty option 2 there is no limit, the 300Gb limit was done away with months ago. it is UNLIMITED with only p2p torrents being throttled during peak hours and all weekend.

BT Fibre. TalkTalk Fibre, Sky Fibre...

At the moment I'm with BT Infinity I am getting a constant speed of 74Mb/s and 18Mb/s. Me and my friend were saying if you went to TalkTalk Fibre, Sky Fibre or Plusnet Fibre you would get exactly the same speed because its using BT's lines, is this right?

I could be wrong but I don't think it can be guaranteed you would get the same because I believe they us different kit at the exchange which may have an effect on your speed.

TalkTalk Fibre & Time Capsule

Hi All
I fully appreciate this has been asked many times but after looks at all the threads I cannot work out what to do!
I have had TalkTalk Fibre installed and using the Huwai router that came with it. However, I would like a stronger signal as in WIFI I am getting a poor reception in many areas, so I can either:
1. Use just the Time Capsule as my router
2. Bridge my Time Capulse to mirror the TalkTalk and increase range (I believe?)
My main thing is which is best, and if its option 2, then how do I do it step by step as I have done a hard re-boot on the Time Capsule but just cannot get it to communicate with the TalkTalk router.
Also, will I still be able to use the hard drive on it at the same time
FInally, I have my TalkTalk router in the dining room, then have an ethernet cable from that to a ethernet box near my TV. This then has the Time Capsule plugged into it with 2 ethernets (1 to the LAN and 1 to the WAN).
Am I totally wrong in my set up or can someone give me a 'dummies' guide to set it up?

I have set up a TC with a talk talk huawei router as you state above. However, I sometimes receive an error messgae on my IMAC stating that another device is using the IP address and that I should try and access the web again later or talk to the system adminstrator.
My set up is by using ethernet from the modem to the Huawei router and then ethernet to the TC WAN. I am using a different wireless network name and password on the TC than is on the TalkTalk network.
I am having problems with my sonos music system losing access/connection to the TC server and so I am looking to resolve all the TC network issues before I can tackle the sonos issues and hopefullt one might resolve the other....

Possible fibre upgrade in my area

Hi all! Unfortunately for me I'm stuck out in the sticks with a pretty bad copper connection (0.8-1.2meg down, 0.2-0.4meg up and an alright ping of 35-45ms). However, I just discovered that my exchange, EMHARDI (Hardingstone) has been upgraded to FTTC.
Some people connected to this exchange have mentioned that their cabinet has already been upgraded to support FTTC and they're now able to get Infinity. I was wondering when the cabinet at the end of my street would be entering the upgrading process (if it does at all). The cabinet number is P20. I've checked and it's currently not in any phase of upgrade (http://puu.sh/8lUuS.png).
Does anyone know of the plans for EMHARDI cabinets and when they'll be upgraded of will I have to hope the I'm one of the 90% by 2015 or be very patient and wait for 2017. By then that'll be a whole 10 years on a ~1meg connection, yikes!

Talktalk fibre broadband is faster than BT!

For everyone's info. I was on BT infinity my average speed was around 12mbs, the highest was 15 but it would regularly drop to 10mbs. I was originally quoted 17-25 mbs by bt. When I began to complain they said the speed I should recieve was actually upto 17mbs. After many calls/emails to customer services to try and get the speed increased without success, I decided to leave bt. I chose talk talk fibre broadband as it was half the price. I had reservations as talk talk quoted a speed of 10mbs. I spoke to them they assured me the speed would be the same as talk talk. On installation I was just sent a talk talk router. My Bt setup was the bt infinity router and a white bt openreach modem. Once I was connected to talk talk I did a wireless speed check, it was 20mbs! Four days since installation and it's consistently 20mbs download and around 2.0 upload with no speed drops.
Whenever I complained to BT they always told me they wiring to my house was correct so the fault must be due to a fault in my house. I never touched the wiring it was installed by an engineer and I carefully described my wiring setup when reporting faults.
BT YOU LET ME DOWN. You had ample opportunity to fix this problem but you could not and your competitor can do a much better job using your own equipment and for half the price!
I wonder if the problem all along was the openreach modem. Maybe it was slowing down the speed. Who knows but the supposed experts gave me an inferior service.

Openreach obviously provide the infrastructure but some isps can achieve higher speeds over the same network than others
(or choose to ) by tuning the line or something similar.
The isp must be able to influence the speed to some extent otherwise why are new customers told to wait a week or two
for their connection to stabilise, before they realise their optimum speed ?
Also I understand that some isps impose traffic shaping.

BT Infinity 2 - recontracted and upgraded but didn...

I just moved house and re contracted with BT as well as upgrading to BT Infinity 2 at the same time.
Can anyone explain why I did not get a new Home Hub 4?

I phoned on friday last regarding just this issue having recontracted on June 4 and linked and quoted the press release http://www.btplc.com/News/Articles/Showarticle.cfm?ArticleID=4E2E1EF5-FCBA-4CE4-B769-E48E0F68ACED on BT's page as provided on this forum. After approx 40 mins on the phone with discussions between the the agent and her manager they agreed to send me a free HH4 which I have now received. Stand your ground if you want one.

since upgrading Xos i cannot send emails with talktalk, i can receive them and still send on ipad and iphone. any one else had the same experience thanks

You need to send through the smtp address provided by your mobile network or switch your mobile email to an imap provider such as gmail or an apple .me account as these tend to work.

Migrating away from Infinity to Sky fibre unlimite...

Hello all,
BT Infinity has been pretty decent this past year, but with the price rises due in Jan, I'm strongly considering cancelling my service and moving to Sky for their Sky fibre package. I know all the fibre is managed by BT anyway, so there wont be any difference in service, and it's really more of a cost issue than a service issue. We will also be getting the HD TV package and phone bundle, and it all works out at a much better price than we are currently paying for each service separately.
Does anyone know exactly how the migration process from one FTTC ISP to another works? Is it a similar process to ADSL migrations, in which you're given a MAC code and a time period for cancellation? Or is it much more complicated to migrate on a fibre connection without a loss of service for a long period of time?
Any tips would be much appreciated.

you will only benefit from infinity2 if your infinity1 connection can max out the speeds, if you cannot get the max infinity1 speeds then that is the max your line can do, going to infinity2 will not make it faster as you have already reached the max your line can do

They are showing up now but when i posted all i could see was a blank triangle(which means the admin/mods hadn't approved them).
Is your line dropping the connection (lights on the router changing colour)or is it stalling (lights staying the same colour)?
Regarding a 5ghz router there are many dual band routers out there that will do the job your after just fine just make sure they support PPPoA.
And for future reference i will post the details below you can use to connect a new router to the Sky network(ignore that is says o2 as these were release by Sky when they bought o2/BE broadband so those customers could use their own routers on Sky).

Fibre upgrade for Exchange only lines (EANAR)

Who can advise me if there are any plans to upgrade Exchange only lines in my local Norfolk exchange (EANAR) to FTTC as I currently cannot get fibre despite my Exchange having been upgraded in Dec 2014? BT Openreach were near useless in just confirming that my existing landline was exchange only followed by rubbing salt in to the wound by announcing how BT Openreach has managed to get fibre to everyone else in the area (i.e. without an exchange only line)! The local exchange was upgraded as part of BB for Norfolk project.

Om3/om4 fibre upgrade?

We currently have OM1/OM2 throughout our network, but looking to upgrade to 10G in the nearer future. We may need to run new fibre cabling which will work with our current interfaces which are mainly GBIC WS-G5484 and sfp GLC-SX-MM tranceivers and be good enough to run 10G or even 100G at a later date after the hardware is updated? I know this is a general question but any technical advice would be greatly appreciated.

As you increase the speed of the link, you typically shorten it's reach. This link (FOA) is a good reference to show you the various link lengths based upon link speed (and transceiver type). 10Gbps on OM1 MMF is 220 meters
100Gbps transceivers are in their early stage of deployment; mainly targeted at the long-haul networks (singlemode fiber). For short reach links (100m/125m), they are using multiple OM3/OM4 fibers, with 10 transmit & 10 receive (10Gbps per fiber) per 100G link or 4 transmit/4 receive (25Gbps per fiber) per 100G link. Link lengths will continue to evolve as the market matures and will we will see improvements in reach length over OM3/4 fiber. We will probably even see 100Gbps over OM1/2 fibers (at reasonable link lengths) as volumes deployments increase (my prediction only).
It would be sound to install OM4-rated multimode fibers for new installations, to provide the highest capability along with some singlemode fibers to future-proof the backbone network (400Gbps and higher links).

BT infinity 'super fast' fibre optic, what a joke!...

ridiculous, just ran BT's own test your speeds, I'm getting 15.45 download, 2.90 upload and 41.50 ping (whatever that is), I knew internet was slow but what a joke, that's when it's working, it flashes orange more than is blue, this is the second modem to do this (and they're sending a third!)
not quite the at least 51 download speed was promised by BT when signed up to the super duper mega fast Infinity2 fibre optic package, I'm connected to the DSL not the WAN, will this affect it, trying to talk to their CS is a joke, they're obviously reading from a booklet and have no idea when ask about that, in fact they ignore it completely!!
anyone else getting this? it's the home hub 5, my socket wasn't changed like was told it would have to be neither? :s
am seriously tempted to cancel the DD and send the hubs back to BT with a note saying as haven't provided what said would you can shove it, seriously, telling folks will get super fast and signing up to the most expensive package got...then delivering a sloppy second service, I'm not prepared to pay over £40 a month for, it won't even connect to my son's laptop neither, says is 'too far' we live in a bog standard house, not a 30 bedroom mansion, his bedroom is right above the modem, he can't get much closer unless moves on top of the thing!

Hi Terry, that does not mean anything, Virgin don't give you free access to BT Fon or BT Openzone. There are always going to be differences between companies.

When is my BT cabinet being upgraded for fibre?

Hi,
I live on a new build estate with about 100+ houses and whilst everywhere around us seems to be able to get fibre our cabinet has not been upgraded for fibre.
I'v registered my interest on the BT site to be kept informed of fibre availability in my area several times and have not heard anything from BT.
I cannot find anywhere on the BT site / forums which tell me how I can find out when BT are / or if they are planning to upgrade my cabinet.
Can anyone help me find out more accurate information from BT about this as I work from home a lot and my current broadband speed is very slow and drops off a lot?

Your exchange maybe FTTC fibre broadband enabled but to be able to get Fibre broadband such as BT Infinity your green telephone street cabinet will also need to be upgraded with a new FTTC Street Cabinet. Not all of these street cabinets in an exchange area are upgraded.
You can check if WBC FTTC fibre broadband such as BT Infinity is available to your landline number/address by going to the BT Wholesale Database.
If it gives a estimated date for :WBC FTTC" then your cabinet is in the rollout plan.
If you do not have a BT recognisable number then you can check using your address by going to BT Wholesale Database http://dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/ADSLChecker.AddressOutput .
Click here to see an example of what your looking for in the BT Wholesale Database.
If there is no mention of WBC FTTC when checking the BT Wholesale Database then unfortunately it looks like your cabinet isn't currently in Openreach's fibre broadband rollout plan.
Unfortunately BT Retail (a communication provider/ISP who operates this forum) does not have much say as to when and if you will be able to get FTTC or FTTP/H based broadband such as BT Infinity.
**The Fibre-Optic Broadband Rollout is being managed and done by Openreach for all communication providers/ISPs.
BT Retail (a communication provider/ISP) has nothing to do with the rollout of fibre broadband.**
