BT Infinity - PPPoE or PPPoA

Hi All
Is it possible to change my Infinity connection to PPPoA?
The reason I ask is I have a Vodafone Sure Signal and it will not work with a PPPoE connection. Vodafone recommend asking BT to change my connection to PPPoA. I would not have thought this was possible, can anyone confirm this?
Cheers Richard

Are you using the BT Infinity Hub ?  Can you choose between PPPoE & PPPoA in its setup ?
If you can, you could just try it and see - BTs network used to work with either, but your problem is whether or not the router (the Infinity Hub) will happily talk PPPoA to the modem, rather than what happens on the network side of the modem.

  • BT Broadband PPPoA to PPPoE

    Hi There,
Has anyone been able to get a CISCO ASA 5505 & Draytek Vigor 120 working with BT Broadband (non BT Infinity)?
I get as far as an I.P. address issued to the outside interface but no connectivity to the internet.
    Thanks

Update: Stunned amazement MAC code actually received........blood pressure now verging back to normal after the run around given to me by BT yesterday. During the last phone conversation, the BT represenative, grasping at straws, actually claimed that the faster broadband speeds being offered by their competitors in my LLU unbundled telephone exchange were unachievable on both my home broadband  line and in my telephone exchange, when I had personally witnessed ADSL 2+ speeds of 12-15Mbps on my next door neighbours broadband connection, when I was only receiving a meagre 5.8Mbps with BT.............Adieu BT.........you will not be missed.

  • Cisco 886VA - Multiple PPPoE Line Load Balancing

    Dear Cisco Community,
due to the need of increased bandwidth a customer ordered three ADSL6000/576Kbit lines from the same ISP. Dial-in is done with PPPoE and the IP is not static.
    - Is it possible to load balance between the three ISP lines with this router as the Cisco 886VA-K9 (Advanced IP Services) doesnt support PFR/OER I want to load balance per session, meaning each TCP session takes the same path, the next TCP session takes second path, next TCP session takes third path, then first path again and so on.
    - I did read the tutorials avaiable, but they don't discuss how the lines are used in round-robin fashion, just how to distribute different traffic on different lines. (https://supportforums.cisco.com/document/32186/dual-internet-links-nating-pbr-and-ip-sla?page=1) or (http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/ip/network-address-translation-nat/100658-ios-nat-load-balancing-2isp.html)
    - How would you solve this challenge?

    Hey there,
I managed to fulfill my requirement..
If its a cluster on same machine or across machines, this should work
    1. Login to machine, cd $DOMAIN_HOME
    2. mkdir -p Apex_lsn_config/AdminServer Apex_lsn_config/<MS1> Apex_lsn_config/<MS2> # MS1 and MS2 are the Managed Server names as appropriate
#If you are planning for cluster spawning MS's across machines, make sure you create the dir's on step 2 for each machine respectively. (in my case $DOMAIN_HOME is not shared)
    3. Copy apex-config.xml from the /tmp/apex or whatever location you have it currently to Apex_lsn_config/<MS1> Apex_lsn_config/<MS2>
    4. cd $DOMAIN_HOME/bin; cp -p SetDomainEnv.sh SetDomainEnv.sh.orig #Backup the file
    5. Append -Djava.io.tmpdir in SetDomainEnv.sh as below for JAVA_OPTIONS # Do it on both machine if you are not sharing DOMAIN_HOME and planning cluster across machines
    -Djava.io.tmpdir=$DOMAIN_HOME/APEX_CONFIG/${SERVER_NAME}
Hint: Search for "iterativeDev" and append the same line with -Djava.jo.tmpdir
    6. Modify "java.io.tmpdir" from the web.xml file of apex.war as below and re-deploy the war
    <context-param>
         <param-name>config.dir</param-name>
         <param-value>${java.io.tmpdir}</param-value>
    </context-param>
    7. Bounce Weblogic Admin and Manged Servers. Make sure to tail the Managed Server log to see apex-config.xml is picked from the new location.
    8. Brew a Coffee for yourself :)
    - You find the instructions on creating a cluster from weblogic documentation, the steps mentioned above are only to overcome the bdb locking issue whilst creating a cluster.
    Did it help?

  • Dynamic bandwidth selection for PPPoE over Ethernet/VLAN

Hello all, hope you are doing great.
I'm planning to deploy PPPoE Server (Cisco Router 7609) for a ISP. This ISP will provide Internet connection for customer over Ethernet.
I have to provide a solution to assign bandwidth to each customer by RADIUS and I find some clues that Dynamic Bandwidth Selection (DBS) should be the answer. Unfortunately, DBS only support PPPoA or PPPoE over ATM.
If you have any experience with equivalent function, please help me. Thank you very much.
    Regards,
    Hiep Nguyen.

    Hello,
Sometimes modems refuse the connection to routers. If they will connect to another device, such as a PC, then you can clone the MAC of that PC to the router to trick the modem into 'thinking' that the PC is connecting. This is usually done on a DHCP connection, although I have seen it work with PPPoE as well.
You should never see any issue with the PC and router having the same MAC because they are on completely different networks. The router is on the ISP network (WAN) and the PC is on the LAN network of the router. We use this trick all the time when we can't get a modem to play nice with a router. If there was danger of conflict the functionality would not be in every consumer and SMB router available. (That I am aware of) I will not guarantee that it will work but it is certainly worth a try.
I have seen cases where a certain brand/model of modem will not under any circumstances work with the router. In that case you can either replace the modem or replace the router.

  • Connecting a modem, problem solving PPPOA

    Hi everyone,
I've purchased the Airport Extreme (dual) and I've also got a new Broadband Package on the way due to my last ISP being a failure!
The ISP is PPPOA, as was my last one, and as far as I can see the Airport Extreme has no support for this. Only PPPOE.
I also have a Netgear DG834G, which I was planning to use as a modem, but since the airport can't support PPPOA, that's out of the window, right?
    1. Will using the Airport as a bridge and connecting to it cause any problems (speed decreases etc) with the internet?
    2. Is is best if I purchase a Vigor 120 which will provide a PPPOA to PPPOE bridge, therefore solving the problem? Or is this not needed and will provide no advantage?
Any ideas welcome, got a few days to get it solved!
    Thanks,
    Ste.

The ISP is PPPOA, as was my last one, and as far as I can see the Airport Extreme has no support for this. Only PPPOE.
That is correct. The AirPorts do not support PPPoA to provide user credentials to the ISP. You would require another device: modem, another router, or your computer that support PPPoA to provide these.
I also have a Netgear DG834G, which I was planning to use as a modem, but since the airport can't support PPPOA, that's out of the window, right?
Not necessarily. You could connect the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) directly to one of the Netgear's LAN ports with the AEBS configured as a bridge. This would allow the Netgear to provide both NAT & DHCP services for the entire network.
    1. Will using the Airport as a bridge and connecting to it cause any problems (speed decreases etc) with the internet?
No, as a bridge, the AEBS would become a "passive" device.

  • Switching to DSL: will RP-PPPoE be needed?

Here's the situation: very soon, I will be switching from my current sucko 128 Kbps service (which plummets to 0 Kbps all too often) to Verizon DSL. I've been reading around in the wiki, and it seems that Verizon is currently using PPPoE for most DSL connections. However, I also read that, if you are not hooked up directly to the "modem" (e.g. connected via a router), you may be able to use DHCP.
I'll be connected to the "modem" via a Belkin SOHO router. Will I have to use DHCP or PPPoE?

    Gullible Jones
Will I have to use DHCP or PPPoE
At the moment im using an all in one Netgear Firewall ADSL router/modem but ive recently tested a Belkin soho router to the ADSL router/modem  and this works fine.
To try and separate the router from the modem detail ...
From what i see in my own setup, once Linux has picked up on the network card/ethernet adapter, say on eth0, then you can reach the router setup page, usually on something like 192.168.0.1, or belkin use 192.168.2.1, via your usual web browser.
This is where you enter all the things like your ISP login and pass, your WAN address, protocol  (PPPoE or PPPoA) and encapsulation. Usually all provided by the ISP for you to enter in the router setup pages.
This, for me, PPPoA and VCMUX, is specified by the ISP as the protocol/encapsulation they use.
Verizon may or may not not use PPPoE in Your area. Details may be sent with your Signup info or on the signup pages.
The Belkin router handbook altho targetted at Win or Mac seems simple enough to follow. The one i tried has a built in DHCP server and this assigns addresses to each computer connected to it.

  • Rp-pppoe 3.10-2 problem.

    hi folks
after the recent upgrade to rp-pppoe, a few issues have cropped up.
firstly, i have the following entries in my crontab:
    56 07 * * * /usr/sbin/pppoe-stop
    57 07 * * * /usr/sbin/pppoe-start
pppoe-stop works fine, but after 1 minute, pppoe-start fails to connect, and i get
    Timeout waiting for PADS packets
if i manually use pppoe-start, it connects fine.
secondly, i see these in my log (only started showing after the upgrade)
    pppd[2756]: Couldn't increase MTU to 1500
    pppd[2756]: Couldn't increase MRU to 1500
though it doesn't seem to affect the connection.
one thing i noted is that previously, on pppoe-stop, there was this entry in the log
    pppoe[1937]: Sent PADT
but since the upgrade, PADT isn't being sent anymore. could it be the reason for the reconnect failure?
could someone please help me out.

  • AP express PPPoE problem

    Hi,
I have problems connecting my APe to the internet with PPPoE.
Normaly my APe is configured as a wireless client of my
existing network only used for airtunes.
Now I want to use the APe at another place as DSL-router. So
I´ve setup a new profile using following config:
Wireless Mode: Create a Wireless Network (Home Router)
    Internet Connect using: PPPoE
Network: Share a single IP address (using DHCP & NAT)
Connection to the new wireless network an the APe works
fine: I get an IP from the APe and can ping the APe
If I connect the APe to my DSL-Modem (ethernet modem, not
usb), the light gets green but I´m not connected to the
    internet.
I´ve validated the PPPoE login with another router.
I´ve reset the modem and APe several times.
I´ve reset the APe th factory defaults and create an new
    config.
I´ve setup a syslog-daemon and set syslogging to debug on
the APe, but only got following messages:
ppp: Connecting via ethernet (user "MYUSERNAME" service "").
ppp: Connecting via ethernet (user "MYUSERNAME" service "").
ppp: Connecting via ethernet (user "MYUSERNAME" service "").
    Firmware: Apple Base Station V6.3
Does anyone have a tip to solve this problem?
    Thanks
    carsten
      Windows XP Pro

I don't know that much about Windows. I will only setup a shared folder for my clients who have a Windows laptop from work to share docs with their Mac at home. What I have found to work is to setup the Base Station to connect to the ISP (if they use PPPoE) via PPPoE (Point To Point Protocol over Ethernet) and then set the computer so that it will not attempt to connect to the base station via PPPoE. In the Mac operating System there is a check box that says "connect via PPPoE". I uncheck that box. If that box in OSX is checked it will continue to try to make the connection to the ISP and always fail. Their must be some kind of conflict. There may be a different way of doing it but I am not aware of it. I am sticking to what works and the above works without any problems. As I said I am not that familiar with Windows at this point so I don't know what choices are available when setting up the computer. With Boot Camp coming out I may have to delve a little deeper into it as I am sure that I will have clients asking me to setup a partition on their drive in order to run Windows. My question is are you using PPP on a dialup? If you are on dialup then that is a different story. If you mentioned a dialup connection on your post, then I missed that and I apologize.

  • Conflicting PPPOE Status Info [this is a long message]

Odd set of conflicts among 3 sources at the very same instant:
    1. pull-down Finder menu for PPPOE reports "PPPOE: Idle" on the first line;
    2. Internet Connect panel with Airport selected shows "Connected via PPPOE for 00:38:51" at the bottom left; and
3.a. Network Preferences for "Show: Airport">PPPOE shows "Connect using PPPOE" UNchecked, AND
3.b. Network Preferences for "Show: Airport">TCP/IP shows "Configure IPv4:">Using DHCP.
When I check the box ON for "Connect using PPPOE" the menubar icon for Airport drops the time connected and the Internet Connect panel shows "Looking for PPPOE host..." and an Internet Connect message tells me that the Airport Base Station needs to be set to Bridge if I want to connect using PPPOE. And then iChat informs me that I'm offline, Airport Administration Utility shows no base station within range, Airport Setup Utility says my Airport Card is either missing or needs to be configured, Mail receives but cannot send mail, Safari works fine, MT-NewsWatcher can't find the news server to get an updated list of Usenet groups.
I turn OFF "Connect Using PPPOE" and then the time duration returns to the menubar next to the Airport icon, and the Mail message which could not be sent produces the whoosh sound from Mail indicating it's been sent on its way. I'm sure I've overlooked some of the symptoms.
I have re-installed Airport and iTunes software from the CD, and I've even installed OS X on the second internal hard drive and turned it into the startup disk (always after running Software Update to increment successive updates until I'm told I'm up to date). I've even taken the Lucent card from a cannibalized graphite Airport base station to replace the G4's internal card (with the tail for the antenna sticking out of the side panel, which cannot be closed). In all cases, I have success for a while. And then within a few hours everything goes haywire again. All this happened BEFORE I decided to buy the PowerLogix processor upgrade card, thinking that lack of power was the problem. After the processor upgrade, the Airport dilemma remained.
So...finally...my question is, "What's going on here?"

DonaldT, Welcome to the discussion area!
Can't believe how much useful info is here. I started using Macs in 1985 and somehow overlooked these discussions all this time. Thanks for the welcome!
If your ISP requires PPPoE, then PPPoE should be
enabled on the AirPort Express but should be disabled
    on all of your computers.
Oh. To read this e-mail, I had to launch Network Preferences and had to turn "Connect Using PPPoE" off. I'm assuming that this turns off PPPoE on my computer and Airport Express stays the way it is. Whew, am I relieved. This also restores my faith in the Mac--it's the outside world that's screwy.
Okay, cross my fingers and hope that my connection doesn't get lost again....
Thank you, Duane! I like how your brief message took care of my essay of a question!

  • Strange PPPOE internet behavior

I recently set up a 2611 router to initiate my PPPOE connection to ATT
DSL. I was able to get the PPPOE to connect and everything seemed to
be working how ever after a few days I started to notice that certain
websites were not coming up. My setup consistes of a 2611 router that
is connecting to the internet, internally this router connects to a
2621 router on a 10.1.2.X network which is also acting as a router on
a stick for vlans that i have setup on a 2924 switch in a 192.168.X.X
network. The problem did not seem to be VLAN specific as at least one
PC on each VLAN could get to the sites that were having issues. The
sites that I noticed that were having issues were Windows Update
(would display a "no network connection" error after searching for
updates), Craigs list ( would go to a page can not be displayed when
trying to post adds) Yahoo groups ( could sign on to groups but once
signed on all links would go to a page can not be displayed error)
Credit card sites ( could sign in but all links once signed in would
go to page can not be displayed). I tried troubleshooting this on the
Windows end first by engaging Microsoft support, but we were able to
determine that there was an issue with the network as once I replaced
the 2611 with the linksys that I was using previously everything
worked. Before taking the 2611 down I was able to do a packet sniff
with Ethereal of a succesfull and failed windows update, the only
glaring issue that i saw was that on the failed windows update I was
getting alot of check sum errors which after researching looked like
they were coming from the Gig NIC. Below is the config that I was
using on the 2611, any insite or thoughts on this strange issue would
    be appriciated.

In the meanwhile I've tried it with another DSL-Modem - same effect: No connect to the Internet-Provided

I have no problems with the Internet Connection using a differend router from another brand with both of the modems (Siemens Plus or D-Link DSL 321B).
I have attached a screenshot of the WAN settings as requested.   I tried both the auto and the manual mode. No success.
If you give me directions how to trace the WAN Port with your router, I would do so.

  • PIX 501 PPPoE problems.

I have a Zoom adsl modem setup to accept PPPoE connections. We have verified this with two other, non-cisco devices, and it works.
I have configured the outside interface to connect via PPPoE to the router from within the PDM.
I have set this up with the known correct username and password, and with PAP authentication.
I have captured a debug with the following commands "debug pppoe packet", "debug pppoe error" and "debug pppoe event" and have attached it as file pppoedebug.txt.
"show ip address outside pppoe" gives:
PPPoE session has not been established yet.
I have also attached a running config of the PIX.
If anyone could take a quick look and see if my PIX config appears fine i'd much appreciate it.
I am very new to working with PIX, i'm used to working with IOS.
    Thanks for your help.

I've upgraded to version 6.3(5) as opposed to 6.3(3) but i still get the same error. You say there might be a bug in 6.3 so me going to 6.3(5) wouldnt have made a difference anyways?
Due to the PIX 501 having Total Memory (16mb) and flash (8mb) I cant upgrade to 7.x. And i really wouldnt want to downgrade to 6.2, but i guess that's worth a try, to see if it really is an firmware fault.
Is there anything else you fine people could suggest?
    Thanks for your help.
    David.

P.S. maybe anybody knows step by step link on internet, or can provide it here for correct full PPPoE configuration.
    Thanks

Check here for many PPPoE examples.
