Bt Infinity running costs of modem, hub, powerline

I am new to Bt internet and Infinity and have kept all my boxes switched on as requested and wonder what the recommended action to take going forward with regard to the running costs and eco advice if I leave them all on?
I have a hub3 and modem and two powerline PL3001a to connect my BT Humax box.

My neighbour turns his modem, router & PC on only when he uses them and seems to get 70Mb download, 18Mb upload each time he connects. Been doing this for about 2 years now with no issues.
So not necessary to leave connected 24/7.
It depends on the individual line, some lines can cope with the modem and hub been turned off, while others drop there speed.

  • Master Socket - Modem - Hub/Router cabling

BT sales (and I tried to get through to their technical support) have unfortunately not been able to answer the question. Due to the layout I will need to lay the data extension cable from master socket to modem up the wall and under the floorboards upstairs, which the engineer will not do. Please can somebody confirm the below are the correct cables : 1. Master Socket <----- RJ11 male to RJ11 male ethernet cable (6 pin, 4 connectors) -----> Openreach Modem 2. Openreach Modem <---- RJ45 male to RJ45 male ethernet cable -----> Hub/Router

If you do go for Webby's suggestion on the Homeplugs get the 200Mbps type or faster.

  • Incorrect overhead % , released to material, re-run cost estimate ?

    Hi guys,
Our costing team found that they are missing to maintain overhead % in Costing Sheet.
They already did CK40N, Mark and release to material master for April 2011. They want to change
the Cost Sheet and then re-run Cost estimate, mark and release.
Can we do CKR1 (we have over 1000 active SKU), and then release and mark again to April 2011.
If they do not re-calulate the plan cost, it will create a large production variance this month.
    Thanks a lot !

    Hi
Technically - You can process 1000 materials in one single cost estimate run in Ck40N...
however, for the sake of easy, create 2 Costing runs with 500 mats each.... it would enable you to handle the exercise easily

  • BT Infinity installation cost

I live in a three storey flat (2nd Floor) where the main BT installation is on the ground floor I am advised that I can receive Infinity  What, if any, is the likely cost of getting infinity into my flat, and how do I get BT to agree this before placing an order John P
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The installation will be straight forward as the existing master socket will be used (assuming you have a landline connected) - the thing to watch out for is that you need 2 power sockets one each for Modem and Router which may be a pain if the master is in a bedroom (like mine) -it can be moved by the engineer doing the installation at no cost.
Any costs will be as per the pricing on the website.

  • Loss of connection with Broadband from modem/hub.

    Hi guys,
Just had BT Infinity installed last Friday and within an hour of the engineer leaving, the blue broadband light on the HH3 turned to Red.  After going through all the troubleshooting you get from the page that displays when you try and access the Internet, I couldn't find anything wrong, tried restarting the HH3 and turning it off and on again with no resolution.
I then decided to power off the white openreach modem even though the DSL light was still lit and green and hey presto, after this restarted and I restarted the hub again, it came back on.
The problem is that since then, I am losing the connection in exactly the same way every few hours.  Sometimes in the space of a few minutes and this is highly frustrating when the hub is downstairs and my PC is upstairs and I have to keep going up and down to reset it.  Using Hub manager to restart the hub has no effect as I need to restart the modem as well.
The engineer did say that the speed will go up and down over the next 10 days and you may lose connection for a few minutes but the connection never comes back on again.  Yesterday morning I noticed it had disconnected so left it all day while at work and still no connection when I came home.
Now being a Windows Network administrator, it seems to me that there is an issue with the hardware somewhere and I would think that the issue would be with the modem as this has to be restarted in order for the connection to come back on again.
Has anyone else had this same issue?  I had the old BT Home hub before on regular broadband and had no issues whatsover.  A colleague of mine said his father had the same issue and they had to replace his modem and hub because the engineer told him the hardware is rubbish and it kept burning out.
I don't want to have to spend more money getting a decent router, why should I?  BT should provide hardware that works and is of good quality.
Can anyone else comment on this or can any mods get involved please?  I'm starting to regret getting this after only 5 days!
    Many thanks
    John
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi John,
I've been going through exactly the same thing as you for the last 2-3 months. My first few weeks on Infinity were fine actually, then Homehub started dropping connection to the broadband a few times a day, now it's every 10-15 minutes. It's been ongoing for a couple of months now and last week I received a replacement Homehub after contacting one of the mods here. No change, in fact if anything it's worse. It's entirely useless to me to be honest, I can't watch anything online, play any games online and to work from home I have to use a 3G dongle (it's slow, but at least it stays on for longer than 15 minute intervals).
Anyway, needless-to-say my BT Infinity experience has been terrible so far. I've seen a few posts on here from people who have had what has sounded like a similar problem and they have swapped out the Homehub for a 3rd party router and have found it to solve the problem completely. It's something I have considered, but until BT actually admit to me that the cause of the problem is their crappy hardware then I'm not going to risk spending the money.
The mod that contacted me did mention that if the replacement hub doesn't fix the problem (it hasn't) then it might be an issue with the PPP session/RAS server and that he'd report the fault to BT Wholesale for me if that is the case. I e-mailed him this morning asking him to do so.
    Good luck!

  • Infinity does it need 2 hubs.

I don't know if this question has been asked, so here goes. When you get infinity installed you get a HH 2 and a router. For normal use on the internet, do you really need the HH 2, and can you just use the router for surfing. Because i did read somewhere, that you need the HH2 for BT Vision.

Not quite - you get an Infinity Hub (a router) and a VDSL modem.

You'll need a router of some sort.

    The HH is the router.

    No, you don't.

  • Varying Infinity monthly costs

I responded to an advert on a web site asking BT to let me know when Infinity would be in my area a long time ago, 2 days ago I had a polite man from BT sales telling me that there was good news now that infinity was now in my area, and can I sign you up as you expressed an interest in it? I said that I needed to know a few things before I even consider BT... I fired lots of questions at him about speeds, monitoring, throttling, he said that none of these 'issues' that I have with BT exist! After reading these forums cleary they all happen.
I checked the costs on the web site in case I did decide to take the plunge with infinty, and the sales guy called me again yesterday, I told him I am already with BT with my home phone and I have free evening and weekend calls, so I am guessing that an unlimited infinity package would cost me just over £26? He told me NO... its about £40, I told him I would think about it.
I can't find any reference to an infinity package thats £40 on its own?
It quotes £28 in one part, then £26 + in another
I have had 11 missed calls from the sales guy today on my mobile and when I got home 6 missed calls on the home phone...persistant or what?
Sorry for the rant, ... I am with BeBroadband with a good d/l speed of 16-17mpbs and 1.1 up the speed is constant any time of day, no limits, no problems, its infinitys speed that I was interested in...
    Any thoughts or comments?

  • Need to run macbook pro in 32 bit mode to run and external modem how do i change from 64 bit to 32 bit

I have a macbook pro which i presume runs in a 64 bit mode. living in a country without broadband i need to use a 32 bit modem, can i change the system to run this modem at 32 bit as it wont load at 64?

Reboot holding 3 and 2, see if your modem works.
Rebooting again sets it back to 64 bit.
If 32 bit works then your fine, for now, but eventually your going to have to go 64 bit.

  • Best parent controls for iPads and iMac running on BT Home Hub

    Hi,
Despite the great sounds coming from the big ISPs about parental controls, they're determined to make a really simple concept absolutely impossible.
Firstly, I'm not trying to lock-down my family's access to the net, but I have two boys aged around ten, and being boys they're inquisitive, so are probably getting closer to stumbling across some seriously dodgy content... And I want to try to prevent that... It should not be hard. If I could limit the times they were online, just if browsing gets out of hand (they're kids remember) that would be a handy option as well.
So on to the technical details... We have a standard BT broadband account that comes into a new BT Home Hub. This is currently our WiFi point. We run a laptop, two ipads, iphones and an ipod touch on Wifi, and have a desktop ethernet'd to the Home Hub. BT offer a downlaodable Family Protection package that allows user accounts to be configured, but this does not appear to work on an iPad or Touch.
Very shortly, we're about to retire the PCs from family life and install an iMac. So we're getting into a properly Mac environment. I was also considering installing a Time Capsule for back-ups and had considered stringing this in series on the Home Hub, then networking all of the Apple devices off of the Time Capsule.
Ideally, the controls would be at a us level, or at least by device. I've come across some App options, but this seems like an unecessary layer of proprietary complexity.
So how Do we deploy parental controls? The simplest option, that BT have failed to realise, would be a network solution that filters everything coming into the house and stops it before it even hits the Home Hub - but that doesn't appear to be an option.
So what options do we have? Any ideas? I had heard suggestions that I could manage user control via the Time Capsule, but that's proving hard to confirm.
Happy to supply any further information to help with this query.
In summary, how do I stop **** getting onto my boys' iPads/Touchs... Should be simple????
    Cheers, Mombee.

Sorry, but the Apple routers do have any type of parental controls on them.
If you have not already done so, you might want to take a look at the parental control options offered by OpenDNS.

  • BT Infinity - no cost upgrade - or is it?

I saw with great interest the announcement from BT recently that if you signed up to a Calls+Broadband Package, you could upgrade to BT Infinity at no extra monthly cost when Infinity became available in your area.  As that's Jan 11 in my case, worth a go, I thougt.
I duly placed an order with BT, having had a discussion with the Online Chat team.  The next day, I had a mail from Customers Services telling me that as I had voice with another CP and BB with BT, the order was "a bit too complicated" for them to deal with.  Could I ring the Orders line?
I did so, to be told that "No; any upgrade to Infinity would require you to pay the additional monthly charge".  I've left the order stand as I think that I can have the further discussion once I have both call + BB from BT.
I am a bit confused thoug; was it a genuine offer or not?  Has anyone taken advantage of the "offer" and had it confirmed?
    Thanks

    Hi MJK,
I sent you another email about this today - once your line order closes I'll be able to get you onto that deal, so what when Infinity becomes available you'll be able to change to it and keep it at the same price.
    Thanks,

  • Infinity installed top speeds with hub but not wit...

BT installed today.. get a nice 73mb down and 16 up, I already had a billion 7800n which has a ewan port,
basically when I use the home hub I get the above speed but with my 7800 I only get 32mb down and 13mb up, any ideas?

I've got a billion 7800n and was upgraded to the new BT Infinity speeds on Friday.
The upload speed is now showing around 17Mb and but my download speed has remained the same, about 35Mb.
I phoned BT Customer Services and they state give the line 10 days to settle and then call back if problem still exists.
Could the download issue be related to the 7800n as meandu229 suggests?
I've raised a support issue with Billion UK http://www.billion.uk.com/esupport/ to get their steer on this and also upgrade the firmware to Bipac 7800N Firmware 1.06f.dc1 but it hasn't affected the speed.
