BT Infinity - Such a massive disappointment - Conn...

Hi,
Had BT Infinity installed and all of my devices now suffer from intermittent drop-outs numerous times per day.
I tried resetting equipment, assigning static IP addresses (as I thought it was a DHCP problem) but nothing seems to solve it.
I'm using a HomeHub 4 but have also tried an ASUS n66u router as well with similar results.
I was with BE unlimited prior to swapping across and the connection (using the ASUS router) was rock solid.
Not sure where to go from here. It seems to be that the connection drops and sometimes re-connects very quickly (30 seconds) or sometimes can be 10 minutes. Messages include failure to connect to the default gateway. Sometime a reset of the network adaptor can solve the problem but to be fair really disappointed with what is happening.
Posted a couple of times on the forum previosly without receiving a response so if anyone can offer some advice it would be greated appreciated.

Thanks for the reply.
It is happening on wireless connections but also on two PCs I have connected to the homehub via powerline plugs.
I could typically have upto 8 devices connected to the hub at any one time (PCs, Ipads, Phones etc) but throughout the day one devices will drop the connection whilst the others are ok.
They all reconnect back up but it may require me to power down the IPad and "reboot" or reset the network adaptor in the PC etc. I would guess it happens a handful of times a day and is a pain!

  • Infinity Speeds YoYo Massively 2 Meg to 40 Meg In ...

Like many people here i've been recently experiencing random speed drops. Predominatly in the evening.
For example today at 2pm i ran a speed test and got a result of 42 mb/s tonight im varying between 2-8 mb/s.
The bt speed test showed me a speed of 4 meg with an ip profile of 38 meg only 1 hour ago.
Normally restarting allthe kit helps, but tonight im getting no luck.
Whats frustrating me is that no more than 5 minutes after the above speed test i re-ran it and am getting 14 mb/s with a download speed of 1.4 meg a second which is what i'd of expectedf for that speed. Even still i got 40 meg download earlier in the day.
All very random and sporadic. I dont see the point in raising it with the indian people and i've read good comments on here about the moderation team dealing with thing.
Its worth noting the installation engineer installeld me with the version 2 infinity modem and not the latest one (if this has any bearing on the situation). Noting the modem isn't hot, nor is the power adapter. The installation took place 3-4 weeks ago.
All test have been done hard wired, i live alone too with no servers running etc.
    Any idea's????
    Phil

All ports are , that's how a switch works with a router. Regardless of wired or wireless it used to return 40meg speed wirelesslys always. Now I get **bleep** speeds. Also actual downloads from websites like nvidia which can quite happily serve 4meg download speeds for me historically, shows about 800 kilo bytes down so about a 8meg connection speeds, which is in line with speed test results

  • Publishing AVI from Captivate 4 - why such a MASSIVE file size.

I've produced the AVI from Captivate 4 without a problem, but the resulting file is massive; over 500 MG for a project with 47

The .cp file for the project is only 7 MG.  Why is the AVI so massive?  Is there something in my setup causing it or is it simply in how Captivate converts the SWF to AVI?
    Thanks for any input,

Codec selection is  more art than science. A few years ago, when I was playing with codecs more heavily than now, I fell in love with the Sorenson codec...only problem  was, no client machines had Sorenson installed.
So I either had to push Sorenson to the clients or figure out what the clients had and work with that.
That is pretty much where I am now, working within the set of codecs that everyone tends to have.
It was great fun exploring the best codecs, but if people couldn't see the results, that rather tended to diminish the effectiveness of the video.

  • Paying for BT Infinity but still getting ADSL conn...

Since I've upgraded to BT Infinity from Total  Broadband, there has been no change in connection or download speeds (even when ethernet cable is plugged in) - now I know why. I am clearly not connected to BT Infinity. I'll tell you how I know. Today my internet went down. I clicked on BT Desktop Help who said I wasn't connected and sent me to the BT Home Hub Manager page:

Naturally, I clicked on 'BT Infinity Connection'. I tried several times as it was 'trying to connect'. I waited up to half an hour each time to no avail. NB - I was told 'this will take a few minutes' each time.
Just out of curiousity, I clicked on 'ADSL connection' --- it connected to the internet straight away!
I conclude that I am NOT connected to "Openreach equipment that plugs into the BT Infinity port on my BT Home Hub". (BT Home Hub 3 that is!).
It looks like I haven't been upgraded at all.
I'm paying for BT Infinity, so why am I not getting it??

Sorry, just to clarify you have the white modem from Dave's picture?
But the Red cable is going to the ADSL port on the HomeHub 3 and not the Infinity port? If so try putting it into the Infinity port and see if you can connect (I'm guessing it will be no). If that doesn't work just switch it back then contact the moderators.

You can consider a digital input to be high impedance, basically accepting little or no current. This would explain why your current supply doesn't cause a change in the digital state. The signal must reach TTL logic levels in order to trigger a change in the digital state.
TTL logic specifies the low voltage range (0) to be between 0V - 0.8V, and the high voltage range (1) to be between 2V -5V. Anything not in these ranges, for instance 1.5V, will give you an unpredictable result.

I'm on Infinity with a curved Home Hub.  I get speeds of 38 down and 8 up from a cabled connection to the hub and speeds of 18 down and 8 up on wi fi.
Why is there such a massive difference in speed between wi fi and wired?
I get the same result with the laptop sat next to the home hub over wi fi so I know it's not because of walls etc...
I've used inSSIDer to check I'm not using the same channel as anyone else.

  • Massive Disk Speed Improvement Plan

I am moving forward with a disk storage speed improvement plan using my Dell Precision T5400 workstation as the test bed.
Specifically, my goal is to create a super fast 2 TB drive C: from four OCZ Vertex 3 480GB SATA3 SSD drives in RAID 0 configuration.  This will replace an already fast RAID 0 array made from two Western Digital 1TB RE4 drives.
So far I have ordered two of these fast SSD drives, along with what is touted to be a very good value in high performance SATA3 RAID controllers, a Highpoint 2420SGL.  I'll get started with this combination and get to know it first as a data drive before trying to make it bootable.
Getting any kind of hard information online about putting SSDs into RAID is a bit like pulling teeth, so I'm not 100% confident that these parts will work perfectly together, but I think the choice of SSD drives is the right one.  I had briefly considered a PCIe RevoDrive SSD card made by OCZ, but was just too esoteric...  I'm actually getting double the storage this way for the same price, I can swap to a different RAID controller if need be, and these drives can easily be ported to any new workstation I may get in the future.
Notably, some early concerns with using SSD in RAID configurations (and things like TRIM commands) have already been alleviated, as the drives are now quite intelligent in their internal "garbage collection" processes.  I've verified this with the engineers at OCZ.  They have said that with these modern SSD drives you really don't have to worry about them being special - just use them as you would a normal drive.
Once I get the first two SSDs set up in RAID 0 I'll specifically do some comparisons with saving large files and also using the array as the Photoshop scratch drive, vs. the spinning 1 TB drive I have in that role now.
Assuming all goes well, I'll then add the additional two SSDs to complete the four drive array.  After a quick test of that, I'll see if I can restore a Windows System Image backup made from my 2 TB C: (spinning drive) array, which (if it works) will let me hit the ground running using the same exact Windows setup, just faster.
My current C: drive, made from two Western Digital 1 TB RE4 drives, delivers about 210 MB/sec throughput with very large files, with 400 MB/sec bursts with small files (these drives have big caches).  Where they fall down dismally (by comparison to SSD) is operations involving seeking...  The PassMark advanced "Workstation" benchmark generates random small accesses such as what you might see during real work (and I can hear the drives seeking like crazy) results in a meager 4 MB/sec result.
My current D: drive, a single Hitachi 1 TB spinning drive, clocks in at about 100 MB/sec for large reads/writes.
The SSD array should push the throughput up at least 5x as compared to my current drive C: array, to over 1 GB/sec, but the biggest gain should be with random small accesses (no seek time in an SSD), where I'm hoping to see at leasdt a 25x improvement to over 100 MB/second.  That last part is what's going to speed things up from an every day usage perspective.
I imagine that when the dust settles on this build-up, I'll end up pointing virtually everything at drive C:, including the Photoshop scratch file, since it will have such a massively fast access capability.  It will be interesting to experiment.  I suppose I'll have to come up with some gargantuan panoramas to stitch in order to force Photoshop to go heavily to the scratch drive for testing.
I'll let you all know how it works out, and I'll be sure and do before/after comparisons of real use scenarios (big files in Photoshop, and various other things).  Perhaps fully my "real world" results can help others looking to get more Photoshop performance out of their systems understand what SSD can and can't do for them.
I welcome your thoughts and experiences.
    -Noel

Not sure who might be following this thread, but I have executed the final phase of this plan, restoring a system backup from my spinning drive array onto the new 4 drive SSD array.
All went off without a hitch, I have my same system configuration including all apps and everything just as it was, except everything is now MUCH faster.
The 4 drive array achieves a staggering 1.74 gigabytes/second sustained throughput rate.
Windows 7 WEI score is 7.9 for the Primary hard disk category.
Windows boots up quickly, everything starts immediately, nothing bogs the system down, and just overall everything feels very fluid and snappy.  And there is no seeking noise from the drives.
Regarding what this has done for Photoshop...  I've only tested on Photoshop CS6 beta so far today, but everything is incrementally improved.  Startup time is faster, things seem more smooth and fluid while editing overall, and a benchmark I created using an action to run a lot of image adjustment operations on a big, multi-layer image ran this long to completion:
When the file is opened from (and the Photoshop scratch file is on) a single spinning disk:
    4 minutes 26 seconds (266 seconds)
When the file is opened from (and the scratch file was is on) a fast array of spinning drives:
    3 minutes 45 seconds (225 seconds)
When the entire system is run from the SSD array:
    2 minutes 31 seconds (151 seconds)
During the action, because so many steps are performed on the big file, Photoshop writes a 30+ gigabyte scratch file on the scratch drive.
    Summary
Clearly the very fast disk access markedly improves Photoshop's speed when it uses scratch space.
Plus copying big image files around is virtually instantaneous.
I don't use Bridge myself, but I have noticed that all the image thumbnails (via FastPictureViewer Codec Pack) just show up immediately in Explorer windows and Photoshop File Open/Save dialogs.  We can only assume this kind of drive speed would really make Bridge blaze through its operations as well.
Following my footsteps would be expensive, but it can really work.

  • Poor quality TV programme downloads in  the UK?

    Hi,
I purchased a few episodes of spooks from the iTunes UK Store. I have to say it was a massive disappointment, the resolution looks way below normal PAL standards. It is also a disappointment that many of the programmes for sale that are aired on BBC HD are only available in SD and as before, at much lower quality than available watching on air.
Is this others experience too? I Would love to know what the actual resolution and compression is on these downloads.

The quality of encoding of iTunes Store material varies greatly.
The problem I feel is the diversity of the potential target playback device - things need to work on basic video ipods through iPod Touch/iPhone, computer and AppleTV with widely varying playback specs.
Ideally there would be several quality downloads available tailored to the output device of main use, with price inversely prorortional to quality/file size. perhaps there could be a nominal upgrade/downgarde fee for the other resolutions/quality or an option to buy a package.
The rentals are by and large quite good quality, but for purchases, to justify buying into a proprietary DRM video format for things you want to play for years to come, the quality:price ratio has to be good enough to make it a no-brainer to get the download rather than the DVD +/- converting the physical media.
There is also the fact that what we buy a DRM product which may become obsolete in a few years, and would have to buy products all over again. It may not be a problem, but there are no guarantees that these DRM files will be playable in years to come once the hardware it was designed for has been replaced.
Not sure about the US but as more TV Shows etc become available to buy, a large proprotion of comments at the UK store are complaints about pricing - the equivalent DVDs are often much cheaper; how many people are prepared to pay just for convenience especially if the quality might be poor?
Take as an example the first season of Bewitched - I'd love to have this for nostalgia as I quite enjoyed it as a child, but it costs nearly £43 and the equivalent DVD is £12 from Amazon.
I honestly could not imagine paying £43 for a TV Show season unless you were a pretty serious fan of that show, and in that case I bet you'd already have it on DVD.
The UK pricing structure seems to regard each show as though people 'must have' these shows with pricing to match - the main target audience to get decent sales should be broader, i.e. those who'd not be at all bothered if they didn't have the show to watch, but would probably buy three or four of such shows for the equivalent pricing of one currently.
I could buy the Bewitched DVD for £12 from Amazon, but I haven't watched a DVD for many months since having AppleTV. I could not be bothered converting a DVD of something like this to watch on AppleTV, but that will not make me spend silly money for the convenience of the download.
Yet again, pricing makes people who are prepared to pay for legal downloads feel it's not good value. The habitual illegal filesharers won't give a monkey's, nor will they be affected.

  • ITunes won't play movies, Quicktime will

This is very aggravating.  My iTunes movies refuse to play in the iTunes player.  If I navigate to where the movie file is located, right click it and open it with quicktime, it will play flawlessly.
If I try to play the video in iTunes it will just stick on the first frame, play a couple seconds of audio, then do nothing.  I can scrub through the entire movie and the frozen frame will change to where I've scrubbed to, but it will never play.
I've tried complete uninstallation of all apple software as one of the support articles suggested, then reinstalling fresh, to no avail.
I've tried changing the audio from 16 to 24 and used various levels of Hz (44100, 96000, etc) as some people said this was how to fix it but that didn't work.
I've tried disabling Direct3D, and disabling all the hardware acceleration in the quicktime preferences, to no avail.
Can somebody please tell me how to fix this?  I am on a very fresh windows 7 install and really have hardly anything installed on this computer.  Just google chrome, iTunes, a few steam games, and Skype.  I really don't understand what could be causing this issue.  I am disappointed that an apple product is requiring more troubleshooting than any windows program I've ever worked with.  My iPhone and iPad work flawlessly, it's a shame that iTunes is having such a massive issue (I can't even play the videos I purchase... really?)

Ok so I figured out what was causing the problem and how to fix it.
It turns out that you can't use enhancements on your iTunes audio source.  If you go to control panel --> sound --> right click your device on the list --> properties --> enhancements tab, then check "disable all enhancements" your videos should play.  You guys may want to add this into the support article about iTunes video playback issues on windows, as it impacted the video playback, but was in the support article for audio troubleshooting.

  • HP Envy17 1050ea Notebook Overheating

    HP Envy17 1050ea Notebook
    Windows 7 64-bit
    System Temperature 90D
    Hardware design flaw
The laptop surface is constantly extremely hot during normal use. It is so uncomfortable that I must use a separate keyboard and mouse. This is the worst at the back-left corner above the graphics card and fan outlet. The laptop cannot be used on my lap as it there is a severe burning risk.
The laptop shuts down due to a “System Temperature 90D” error, even during normal use. This happens if the fan has been cleaned monthly, which is an exceptionally high frequency of maintenance. It is not possible to play games on this laptop as it is unbearably hot and within minutes the graphics judder and the laptop reboots due to overheating.
I have already had the fan and thermal paste replaced through the HP Service Desk with my Care Pack (ticket no. 8051241098). The laptop was reported as having acceptable operating temperatures; however the problem persists, despite my attempts at using a multi-fan cooling device, removing the battery, enabling power saving options, and regular cleaning of the fan vents.
I understand that the HP ENVY 17-3002ea Notebook PC has an improved cooling system with the HP CoolSense, which states that “by rethinking the materials, the placement of components and vents, HP has products that feel noticeably cooler.” I feel that the overheating issue was a design flaw that has now been rectified, without a recall of the faulty model.
I am completely unsatisfied with this product. It was sold as a premium product, capable of handling the latest games. Not only does it not achieve this, but it is dangerous to use. I am extremely disappointed that HP has not provided me with the product as advertised.
I have raised this issue with technical support on several occasions, and am told that my only option is a diagnose and out-of-warranty repair (ticket no. 8060017817). I have already sent the laptop through this repair process and it came back as apparently working at an acceptable level, which was incorrect. I would like a refund for my HP Envy 17 1050ea. Otherwise I would like it replaced with the HP ENVY 17-3002ea with the improved cooling design.
I am very dissapointed with the level of service received from the HP Premium Care team. There are other options for resolving this but HP refuse to admit their design flaw. I have asked to make a formal complaint and was told that there is no-one else I can speak to.
Please could someone from a different department contact me to discuss other options.
    Many thanks,
    Paul Wallace

Thanks Huffer and apologies for posting in the wrong place. I was hoping that someone from HP care would notice this (to accompany the dozen letters i've posted over the past few months) and get in contact. Premium support are refusing to budge or offer any other solutions. I feel it's wrong for HP to design a product with such a massive flaw and then fob me off when i try to get what I was promised and paid for.
In response to your suggestion, i've been reading on various forums about redoing the thermal paste myself. I don't really want to but it is truly unbearable to use my laptop without an external keyboard. Have you heard of anyone uprating the fan?
I actually drew a pattern of the hotspots on the bottom of the laptop and built a cooler using a load of old CPU and PSU fans from retired desktops. That way i could cool the hottest bits with the best performing fans. I built a pretty cool frame out of lego to seat the fans in, wired them up to an old nokia phone charger, on-off switch from Maplins and a metal grid mesh from an old guitar amp on the top to finish it. Dropped temps by nearly 5*C!! Sweet :-)
But still doesn't excuse HPs laptop design: I can't carry my cooler everywhere with me...
    Cheers,
    Paul

  • Is there any way to contact verizon with a detailed cell phone technical support question?

Is there any way to contact Verizon with a detailed cell phone technical support question?  I prefer e-mail so as to provide details (like I am trying to provide here).  I have tried in-store personnel (no help at all) and the web chat - they just want to see me more data instead of helping me with my basic problem!
I CAN NOT GET ANYONE FROM VERIZON TO GIVE ME ANY HELP NOR CAN I FIND A WAY TO FILE A COMPLAINT.  AT THIS POINT I JUST WANT TO DROP MY VERIZON ACCOUNT BUT I'M SURE THAT IT WILL COST ME A SMALL FORTUNE TO GET OUT OF IT.
    Here is my issue:
Chat transcript removed as required by the Verizon Wireless Terms of Service
BELOW IS A SCREEN COPY FROM REDDIT ABOUT SOMEONE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM WITH A VERIZON CELL PHONE
So last night my RAZR MAXX HD did something totally bewildering by spontaneously downloading 2.6 GB of data over the course of ~ 3 hours. Fortunately I was able to catch this problem before it ended up being really expensive, but I still exceeded my 2 GB data plan by 600MB.
    The Culprits:
Reddit News Free: 160 MB foreground / 0.96 GB background
Android OS: 0 MB foreground / 1.18 GB background
Several unnamed applications: ~ 350 MB
    Screenshots:
    The massive data spike
    Android OS data usage
    Reddit News Free data usage
    Weird unnamed processes
    Detailed timeline:
5:12 PM: Incident begins according to VZW data usage website (2.60410 GB used). This is around the last time that I used my phone at the laundromat before getting dinner and watching Game of Thrones.
8:04 PM: 50% of data allowance used (txt msg)
8:31 PM: 75% of data allowance used (txt msg)
8:58 PM: 90% of data allowance used (txt msg)
9:13 PM: 100% of data allowance used (txt msg)
10:05 PM: Got the text messages and immediately put the phone into airplane mode
    10:30 PM: Took screenshots
10:45 PM: Enabled wifi, installed Kaspersky premium. Scan returned no threats.
11:00 PM: Left phone in airplane mode, went to sleep.
    The questions:
What was the root cause of this issue? Did Reddit News freak out as a result of an esoteric bug or was my phone hacked?
If this was a simple Reddit News bug, then why was the Android OS also trying to use such a massive amount of background data?
What the hell are these unnamed numeric applications? I've inspected my process history and this is the first time they have ever attempted to use data.
I'm pretty sure that I can explain this situation to Verizon and get out of having to pay additional data usage fees, but I would like to know more about the problem before I get in touch with them.

All I can think is your phone may have background downloaded an OTA update, and you'd then be prompted with something like, "As update to your Android system has been downloaded, would you like to install it now?"
I do find it very odd that the update would be 2.6GB. As a rough base, the CyanogenMod 10.1 firmware for your device is well under 200MB, so unless Verizon has a ****-ton of bloatware in the update, or it had to attempt to download multiple times for some reason, it may be a stretch.
But doing a little homework, it looks like the Verizon Razr Maxx was updated to 4.1 in late March. Maybe they're still rolling it out in waves? Have you gotten the update yet?
Edit: Aaaand I just noticed you appear to be running an AOSP-based ROM, which totally rules out a carrier update being sent out.
Edit2: If you want to live dangerously, you could try running:
    #kill -9 12289
That 12289 is the PID listed in your screenshot. But don't run that without fulling understanding the kill command.
The ps command could also be of use, but probably not.

I can confirm that the phone is currently at 4.1.2 and that I wasn't prompted for an OTA update. The fact that both the Android OS and Reddit News processes were simultaneously using an extremely large amount of data is unlikely to be a coincidence...

That is very curious that the spikes happened at the same time.I'm curious. It may have put at least some of that 2.6GB somewhere. You could use a data visualizer tool to see if you can find it, which may lead to more clues.

    The largest directories are:
DCIM: Normal looking photos (90,825 KB)
Android: Primarily map cache data (64,846 KB)
If it was downloading content then it did not significantly save content to storage. It's not like I have anything particularly sensitive on the phone, but the idea that it was uploading a snapshot of my data definitely makes me uncomfortable.

Yup, Digital Camera IMages and videos.Somewhere in /sdcard/Android would be my guess as to where a mysterious file would be downloaded, but if it's only 64MB, and mostly map data, I'd safely rule it out.I'm sorry, but I'm stumped here.Edit: I should mention I don't think this is malware, because unless a malicious app gained superuser access, any data it used would show under it's own apk in the data usage list, not Android OS.

Although I'm not really up to speed with the Android platform, I come from a UNIX background so I feel comfortable running commands. How do I pull up a bash terminal? Do I need to root the phone first?

There's a number of terminal emulators in the Play Store that work well. You don't need a rooted phone to get to the shell as your user, but any privileged command won't execute unless you can grant it permission from the Superuser app that is installed when you root the device. So you could probably do a ps -e, but not a kill -9.

Got it. I downloaded a terminal emulator but unfortunately those processes no longer exist.Does Android keep a generic log of system level events like /var/log/syslog?

I don't think so, and I know you'd need superuser permission to read most of the files in /var/log anyway. I'm not super familiar with how Android does its logging, but I do know that the two files of interest are the logcat and dmesg.

Want to mention here that using your settings to set your data cap (set it on your billing day), then you won't go over again. Those text messages are really unhelpful, as they send out well after the data has been used. Chances are good you hit close to the 2GB mark before you received the bulk of the messages.

That's definitely not the case here; both my PC and and Android phone are free from pirated apps.

You used the data.  Verizon can not see what it was sued for.  However your phone can see whats apps used the data.  go to settings-data usage- there will be a place that says data usage cycle.  line the dates up with your cycle.  then there will be a bar graph below that   extend bother white bars one all the way to the left and one all the way to the right.  after those are extended below that will be a list of apps,  there should be one that used over 2 gb and that will show you what app used that data in her purse

  • Full text not getting displayed while using RSRT

    Hi,
I am facing issue while downloading data using RSRT in BI system.
When I go to RSRT and execute a report the output doesn't display full text for a characteristic. i.e. the characteristic has a size of 60 characters, but only 30 chars ( approx) are being displayed as report output in RSRT.
COuld anyone here please help me in getting the full text using RSRT transaction?
I am not using Bex here for the reason that the output has more than 1.8 lac records and hence I get an error while using Bex
WHen I try to execute this report using Bex for a small selection I could see full text there.
And there is no text master data maintained for this characteristic.
Thanks in advance for your replies.

    Hi,
As you said you have 1.8 Lac records, There is no point in increasing the size to maximum number possible i.e 65K .
You have following three options to satisfy your requirement.:
    1.    Usage of  web reporting for export of more than 65k rows. According the note: 1127156 - Safety belt: Result set is too large, in BW version 7.x it I possible to set parameters that would allow such a massive export of data.
    2.    Functionality of OpenHubs. Data can be placed directly into the files (e.g. in CSV format) on application server. Be careful here OpenHubs are specially licensed and by using it there are additional fees.
    3.    Coding of custom ABAP report which runs BW query and gets all its output and saves it in the flat files.
Please let me know if this info is helpful.

  • My Snow Leopard Install Experiences

First of all, let it be known that I’m a relative newcomer to the world of Macs, having bought my first last December. However, I’ve been around computers for fifteen years and class myself as pretty sad on the geek scale and run two Windows and two Linux machines here.
With that in mind, it should be noted that I may have missed something obvious when I upgraded, or that computers really can be annoying sometimes and mileage really does vary.
I’ve got a Macbook Aluminium, upgraded to 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD. It’s been running perfectly since the day I bought it, but being a newbie I added and removed countless applications until it got pretty close to what I thought was ideal for my day to day use.
Before I upgraded to Snow Leopard, I did two backups. A block level backup with CCC, and my usual Full+Incremental backups to another external drive, again with CCC. The first drive was stashed for emergency purposes, after both were tested bootable.
    *Standard Upgrade
*
Went well, apart from a couple of apps that weren’t on any of the problem lists I’d looked at before the upgrade. I accepted defaults, including all the languages I’d never need, and likewise the printers.
On reboot, it was fine and everything seemed significantly faster, but putting the machine to sleep took an age; minutes in fact. Returning from sleep, ejecting external media, and connecting to wireless weren’t improved either. In fact, I’d say that returning from sleep and the wireless connection actually took longer.
Embedded Flash had the fans on my laptop kicking in within seconds, even though I’ve had to push the machine pretty hard in the past to hear the fans at all.
It just didn’t feel right at all, so safe in the knowledge that I have backups that can be quickly restored, I tried a clean install from a running machine.
    *Clean Install from Desktop
*
Easy, and this time I opted not to install any of the printers or extra languages. Machine absolutely flew on reboot.
However, sleep and resume problems remained. Wireless connections were sluggish and even disconnected once; not something I’m used to.
Plugged my printer in - HP C4380 - and drivers were duly downloaded and installed. Printed a test page and the drivers crashed!
Flash problems remain, even after repairing permissions on a Flash update.
Battery life was down to two hours!
Didn’t get as far as re-installing old apps or data.
At this point I was pondering going back to Leopard, but I had another couple of hours to spare, so I tried a clean install from boot.
    *Clean Install from Boot
*
Booted from the install CD. Deleted the existing partition and recreated and formatted.
Installed all the printers, none of the languages I didn’t need, Rosetta (NX requirement until they release V4 native).
After every major software package install, I’ve done a permissions repair and the only update that’s caused any problems is Flash.
Other than that, this is perfect. Copying my data back from the CCC backup was a piece of cake, and being a clean install meant I could be selective about what apps I put back.
No fans, no jittery Flash videos, four hour battery life, instant connections to wireless, fifteen seconds to sleep with more apps open than I care to count. No printer crashes, either network or local drivers. Machine has been running for a week without a reboot.
Today I formatted the drive containing my old Leopard block copy backup and backed up Snow Leopard.
    Conclusions

Well, none that are immediately obvious because I’m fully aware that the final solution which worked for me makes very little sense from a logical point of view.
I just wanted to share this in case there are those out there who are deeply frustrated and want to try something else before giving up and going back to Leopard.
Of course, this really is only for the people who have the time to mess about like this, and of course it’s only safe to play around if you have the backups available.
I’ve never been a fan of OS upgrades in general, but I have to say that I probably could have lived with the very first upgrade I did and researched the problems I met with or waited for fixes.
However, that I took the third option did make me wonder about a few things, and it’s also been a good learning experience.
As we say in the UK, this is just my two bob’s worth, and I certainly wouldn’t advocate taking this approach unless you have time, patience, and more time. Particularly in light of the fact that the third options being such a massive improvement makes no immediate sense whatsoever.
    Unless you know otherwise...
PS: Just one annoyance for me. Those bloody icons in the expanding grids are *FAR TOO BIG*, so let’s please have the option to change them.

The big deal that I see in the 3rd install was that you wiped the drive and reformatted. Maybe the drive had issues exaggerated with the Installation of SL.
Did you ever use Boot Camp when you were playing around with installing and uninstalling apps? Some folks have found that the installer does not like HDDs which had a previous BC partition that was later removed, especially if it was not removed properly.
