BT Netprotect Plus Parental Control Improvement su...

This is a suggestion on how BT can improve the parental control capabilities of BT NetProtect Plus, this suggestion would really provide power to parents in controlling the childrens on-line activities.
Whilst BTNPP alows the parental controls to limit access to the internet based on a time schedule and/or totally block access to sites this is rather restrictive as I would like my daughter to have access to the Internet for her homework but during that period, say 19:00-20:00 I want to block certain distracting sites like facebook & youtube, after 20:00 hours the full internet access is restored - really flexible & you can be far more clever with this software than the simple scenario I portray.
I have some trial software on my laptop called "PC Chaperone" (costs $40.00 to purchase) and it does exactly what I have described above as well as other things that BTNPP also does, this has proved really powerfull in administering Internet activity for my family & I would recommend that BT look into providing something similar.
Mark.

Hi tomotech,
Thanks for you feedback.  I can see how you suggestion could help alot of people and makes sense.  I cant promise that the changes will be made but I will pass this on to our development team for consideration.
Cheers

  • McAfee NetProtect/Net Protect Parental Controls vs...

    Dear All,
My 14 year old has inadvertantly discovered a way to circumvent the YouTube block on McAfee, which was preventing him from loading YouTube videos.
If you are on a Google search page and click the new "app launcher" grid menu, you can access YouTube directly from Google without being logged in, thereby bypassing every filter in place, including the ones set up under my permanent Google log-in.
I am raising this issue directly with Google - in the meantime, how do I make McAfee aware that NetProtect no longer does the job we need it to, and I urgently need a better solution?  All Help Menus appear to lead to BT - nothing seems to refer to a McAfee contact.

Clearing DNS cache did not help.
It has finally come back, but a very long wait; long after the 'minute or so' it said it would take. I agree there was a clear error message.  Maybe it would have come back eventually even with it just temporarily disabled rather than fully turned off?
No further changes to setting by me (still totally removed) but now the blocking is back again ....
    Clearing dns cache no effect.
No major worry as I can revert to BT dns servers till it is resolved, but irritating.
But I see now at http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/46768/c/346,6679,6681/related/1#turnoffperm
"It can take up to two hours for BT Parental Controls to be completely deactivated."

  • Parental controls a disaster under Lion

Since installing Lion, my son's managed account has been a disaster.  I use Parental Controls to automatically filter web content.  This has always worked well in the past.  When he encountered a site that was questionable, Snow Leopard asked for my credentials to add it to the approved white list.  This includes all secured (https://) web sites, which Parental Controls consistently and intentionally blocks, because the browser/OS can't appropriately filter for content on secured connections.
In the modern age of web browsing, however, hundred of companies attempt to install cookies, use invisible images (or other "bugs") or otherwise track Internet usage to sell to marketers.  Many of these cookies and bugs make secured (https://) calls to their host domains, either to secure the user's personal data they are transmiting (probably their story) or to hide the information they are transmiting so we users won't know what they are tracking about us (probably the reality).
Either way, every time my son visits a web page from any even remotely popular site, a dialog box with a laundry list of of secured domains he has (in Safari's words) "attempted to access" appears.  Dismissing the box is not helpful.  Another appears every time he moves to another page.  It is an incredible annoyance for both him and me.
I've blocked cookies from most sites in the Safari preferences.  I've installed the Ghostery extension to block most of the "secret" marketing related traffic affiliated with most web pages.  (I swear, if most people saw how many third-party companies track their private Internet browsing, they'd probably suffer anxiety attacks and never use the Internet again.)  The problem seems a little better, but still isn't totally gone.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

I to have issues with "Parental Controls", it seemed fine with Lion and even 10.8 but now on 10.8.2 skype sems the worst culprit (perhaps it the softy roots) it keeps posting the same requests tht is one for msnmessenger.msn.akadns.net and the other the other is for Skype itself even when I grant permission the same requests keep coming up it interferes with web browsing since when the requests appear they demand action over everything else.
My son is just 14 and he has reached the age where it is vital that there are limitations on his use . The biggest neede for control over a` Spanish social site Tuenti which he received **** from a so called friend which rekindled the need for control and particular to block this site.
Has anyone found a solution to this loop of permissions in the past I set it added approved sites probable about 20 of them then forgot about it .
I switched the controls off yesterday to see if it would reset and cure the situation no improvement plus my son erased his browsing history so it is obvios I need to keep the controls in place.
The only other thought will be to use Little Snitch to control the computer.
    Any thoughts anyone!

  • NetProtect Plus - unable to turn on scheduled scan...

I have installed BT NetProtect Plus but am unable to set Scheduled Scanning.  I click the "Turn on" button (which changes to "Turn Off") and set my schedule, click Apply, but when I return to the Home screen it still shows as Off and asks me to set it up.  When I go to try again sure enough it's back to how it started (off).  I've been around this circle several times now.
    On demand scanning works fine.
I did a custom install omitting parental controls (no children!) and SiteAdvisor.
    I'm running Windows 7 if that's relevant.
    Any ideas?

    Hi folks,
Sorry you are having a bit of hassle with this.  I'll see what the story is and get it sorted for you so it does what it says on the tin.

  • BT NetProtect Plus Problems

Just wondering if anyone has had problems with bt netprotect plus and found any solutions. I was a customer of McAfee for some years, I upgraded to BT Broadband Option 2 with bt netprotect plus provided by McAfee included, my original McAfee software was about to expire and I had followed the link to bt netprotect plus which appeared to download and install, during installation messages appeared telling me old files were being removed and updated, however, on the day my old McAfee expired a message appeared requesting payment to extend subscription, I contacted McAfee to inform them I was now with bt netprotect plus, I sign in under a different password to bt netprotect, however, it always defaults to my old account which is now expired with no software available, I contacted bt customer help, I was transferred to bt technical help who remotely took over 2 desktop computers in my home both have Window 7, the technician informed me bt netprotect plus was incompatible with windows 7, I did question so why are you installing software onto my computer which is incompatible, following the remote installation of bt netprotect plus, I tried to restart both computers to find I was unable to boot up both, the internal fans are running fast and loud, the DVD RW & DVD ROM drive light up, then that's it, the hardrive indicator light remain on, there is no signal to the pc monitor or any other devices (keyboard or mouse) I contacted bt for help, well they can't help me as I have nothing on my screen, I ask for help again today, it can't be the software, we're really sorry but can't offer any help, it is frustrating to have so much conflicting advice, customer service were helpful and understanding and gave me a number to contact bt technical help with the advice of asking for a supervisor, however, they are unable to offer any explanation as to why following remote access to my computers, and changing the system settings, I now have 2 computers that are now useless, the parting advice was to go to computer shop to have them repaired at my expense, the only computer working is my laptop, which was the first pc I was able to download bt netprotect plus to and is working okay, but I'm fearful that it will die to and I'll be left in the dark. I would be grateful if any other bt customers have had similar problems and found any solutions, I can't afford to right off hundreds of pounds worth of equipment, I wished I had never changed to option 2 and kept things as they were, I have never had any problems with BT, McAfee or my desktops prior to this incident.  Thanks

    Hi Stuart,
Thanks for the e-mail. I am really sorry for the problems that you have had, quite a frustrating issue I fully appreciate.
I can see that there is an open complaint on your account in which a team is actively dealing with this case. As far as I can see the last note on the complaint is that you have agreed to bring the PC in question to a Vendor to have it checked. Is that correct?
I really don't think that this issue could have been caused by the action of the advisor who took remote access control of your PC. The actions the advisor took where all at software level but the problems that you describe indicate that the power was off on the PC and monitor when you returned. I am not aware of any changes anyone could make via your operating system that would cause you to lose power to the PC components.
As I say there is a team already dealing with this issue so there is not much we can do in the mean time as too many departments dealing with this could prove very confusing. I would however be very interested to learn of the outcome of this case.. If there is anything else that I can help you with please drop me a reply.
    REPLY
Thank you for your reply, both desktop PC's had power, but were unable to boot up with no signals to peripheral devices (monitor, keyboard, mouse) if the problem was purely software, I can't understand why BT technical help did not ask the customer to download from McAfee site software removal tool before attempting to install BT NetProtect Plus, especially if the customer had been a previous customer of McAfee, maybe wise after the event, on the day the technician took control of my desktops, it was evident that system files were being accessed and deleted and following this both computers failed to restart as unable to boot up. I asked a local computer technician to look at both PC's and one is now up and running again with BT NetProtect Plus installed and working, the other desktop continues to fail to boot up, however, the technician accessed the hardrive to allow me to rescue files.
I have again spoke with BT technical help, I could accept if only one PC failed to boot, but both following intervention from BT technical help remote access is more than just coincidence, but I now understand, BT accepts no responsibility nor offers any solution, compensation for the loss of hundreds of pounds worth of equipment, a warning should be issued to customers that intervention made by BT technical help remote access may result in loss of functioning PC. The only advice available from BT is to continue presenting the non functioning destop to to a PC vendor for repair at my cost, like I said in previous e-mails I would rather replace the desktop as continual repair costs would exceed the cost of a replacement desktop and would resolve the problem at my cost and prevent any further frustration dealing with BT, happy to close the complaint now as unresolved.

  • DSCL Error on export and import of MCX parental controls

Hi I have been using the -mcxexport and -mcximport commands to copy local user parental controls in my labs but have hit a problem.
I need to use the commands to secure 250+ Macs over ARD. The commands have worked for me in the past but now I get Error: 14987
I have seen this error before but got around it by adding the .plist extention and making sure it had root access.
This has not worked. I am not a DSCL guru or a UNIX boff and am really stuck as to where this problem is.
I am currently in a lab of 20 where I get this error. I have another lab next door from a very similar build and that works fine.
    sudo dscl . -mcxexport /Users/student  /Users/admin/Documents/parental_controls.plist
    Error:14987
I have used sudo and even run logged in as root. Executed locally and over ARD. Pretty stumped, and quite desperate!
    The clients are 10.6.8
Any help would be really great!
    Cheers
    Carl

thanks - but that is effectivley what I did - used the repository import from my exported ZIP file - and it all imported OK - but the error on login to topology manager afterwards is that the snp user does not exist.
Although I initially used the 'Master Repository Creation' I then adaondoned this - dropped and recreated my Oracle user 'snpm' that owns the master repository and used the import repository approach.
I am trying to sign in as the standard SUPERVISOR user (that existed OK in the Hypersonic master repository that was exported to the ZIP file) and also trying other users that I know existed in the Hypersonic reporitory that I exported - same problem. I can see in Oracle SQL*Plus that in the SNP_USERS table the SUPERVISOR user exists.
If I do instead carry out a standard 'Create Master Repository' and do NOT try to import anything then it works OK and I can sign in to the Topology Manager as SUPERVISOR.

  • Parental Control Troubleshooting

I tried to install the Guest Account and Parental control with few additions in the pre-selected software. As soon as I push the "lock icon" to close the "parental controls", the multicolor wheel do not stop rolling and I have to "force quit" from "parental control" window. Any help on this ?
    Thanks

Not to beat (or revive, as the case may be,) a dead horse, but...
    I have three Leopard computers:
A MacBook Pro (see tag at bottom of post,) which only has one account, so no Fast User Switching, and no parental controls. Dashboard works fine.
An eMac (1.25 GHz USB 2.0 model, 768 MB RAM, 160 GB hard drive, SuperDrive,) with two accounts, plus the Guest account turned on. Fast User Switching is on, and the Guest account has parental controls. Dashboard works fine in all three accounts, no matter what user switching I do.
A 12" PowerBook G4 (867 MHz VGA model, 640 MB RAM, 40 GB hard drive, Combo Drive,) with one account, plus the Guest account turned on. Fast User Switching is off, and the Guest account has parental controls. I have Dashboard disabled in the Guest account. Dashboard does not work in the main account, though. (I do have the security on this computer totally locked down. Every single Preference that even hints at "security" is on. Secure VM, FileVault, auto-logout after x minutes, login window requires typing user name and password, the works.) I've tried all the tricks, including turning off Parental Controls. This computer is also on its original software install. Yes, really. It has never been reformatted since I opened the box. It came with Jaguar, and has been upgraded to Panther, then Tiger, and now Leopard. I have deleted user accounts and created new ones, (the current user account is less than a month old;) and have done disk repair and permissions repairs. I know that Dashboard worked in Tiger on a different user account; but I honestly can't recall having tried Dashboard on the current user account in Tiger, much less in Leopard, until today.

  • Think parental controls have been installed on Mac book pro

    Hello,
Does anyone know how to check if parental controls have been installed on my Mac. I have a lot of issues going to certain websites and my safari was having issues loading. Plus I had weird files on my disk that would set to different numbers. I'm not a child and believe someone linked my laptop. Please help remove controls.

    Privateperson87,
to check if any user is under parental controls, log in as your administrative user and open the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences. It will show your users on the left-hand side of the window, and whether those users are administrative, “standard” (i.e. non-administrative), or “managed” (i.e. under parental controls).

  • Safari can't connect to server with parental controls on

I have one user with admin rights and one user plus guest with parental controls turned on. Recently when parental controls are turned on, I get 'safari can't connect to server' error. When I turn parental controls off again I can connect to the internet again. Why is this?

    Hi and welcome....
Unfortunately, Parental Controls can only be enabled on a non admin account.
See if there's a proxy set up for Safari. From the Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Advanced tab. Click "Change Settings" next to: Proxies.
That will launch System Preferences / Network - Proxies.
If there are any boxes checked under: Select a protocol to configure, deselect the box then click Ok.
Quit Safari (Command + Q) then relaunch Safari.
See if Safari can connect in a parental controlled user account.

  • Creating User Accounts So I Can Set Parental Controls?

My nine year old son loves to use YouTube to watch video game videos and apparently there are NO parental controls or any kind of filters on YouTube. The majority of the ones he finds are ok but there's about 15% that are just plain shocking even to me. Its pretty sad the things that people put up there. I hate to have him never be able to get online again so I want to set some sort of filter where I can block content according to keyword but I just cant figure it out at all. So I tried to set controls over the whole MacBook but it tells me that as administrator I cannot. I cant figure out how to create non-admin users though. Searched all the forums and guides, etc. but no answer.
Thanks, so in summary, I just want to know how to create user accounts if thats the right term.
I am using a MacBook, running Mac OSX version 10.4.11.

    Hi
Apple menu (top left hand corner) > System Preferences > Accounts. Click the lock to authenticate. Just above the lock are two icons; a 'plus' and 'minus'. Click the 'plus' icon. Enter the name of your son, tab down into the next field and that should autofill for you with the information you placed in the name field; tab down again and enter a password; tab again to key in the password again; don't tick the box that says "allow user to administer this computer"; click 'Create Account'. You should be prompted with a window asking if you want to leave automatic login on or if you want to turn it off - turn it off. You'll see why later on. What you should see after this has finished is in the left hand window at the top your account details with your name and underneath it should 'Admin' and below your account details will be your son's. Underneath his name it should say 'Standard'.
Click on his name to select it and now click on the Parental Controls tab on the right hand side of that window. You should now have the option to enable and configure control for the 5 applications listed there: Mail, Finder & System, iChat, Safari and Dictionary. Explore and configure to your hearts content from there. When you are happy quit out of System Preferences and select Log out from the Apple Menu. You should now be presented with the Login Window displaying not only your account but also the newly created one for your son. Log in s your son and test to see if what you've set as a control has worked. Keep going backwards and forwards between the two accounts until you are happy.
Bear in mind there is only so much you can do.
It's virtually impossible to block everything potentially morally harmful without basically stopping your son from having any access at all. You could look at supplementing Parental Controls with the built-in filters in your router - if you have one? If you don't then consider getting one. I'm struggling to think of a router for residential use that does not have some sort of built-in web filter?
The tab button is the key immediately to the left of the 'Q' key. It will have an arrow going from left to right printed on it.

  • Can I be hacked remotely through Parental Controls?

I only manage my own Macbook Air, yet I see strange computers listed under "Other Computers".
I live in a huge apt building for students off-campus, brand new, open wifi, Pavlov Media.
They random computers are not always there. I find it quite odd because I manage no one's computer - I have just this Macbook Air.
But under "Other Computers" in Parental Preferences, one or two other computers regularly pop up. They stayed for days, a couple weeks.  Then I started trying to log into them, and doing searches on hacking through Par Prefs, and they disappeared.  Only to be back a few days later.
Doing Disk Utility Repairs then restarting doesn't get rid of them. They just disappear within a couple hours of my looking for answers to their presence, or of my unplugging and running low on battery.
I always have my firewall on, all ports closed, no sharing, software's up to date, not discoverable, remote login off, have no other user accounts except mine, and a disabled guest account that I am not allowed to erase apparently.  Don't know what else to do to make it safe.
If this isn't some wondrous new hacking scheme, am I just seeing other students' computers that had parental controls set up on them, and the software is detecting them through the wifi?  Even though I didn't set up prefs on anyone's computer?
Seems even more wacky than an unlikely hacker scenario, for my computer to be randomly detecting completely unassociated computers.

  • Can't access google calendar with parental controls on

We are trying to give our daughter accesss to the family's Google calendar.  In the parental controls we have "try to limit adult websites" as the selection.  With this on, she is not able to log into the calendar - it gives a message that says something about not being able to establish a secure connection.  She can go on the Google homepage without problem and search, etc. - but she can't access the Google sign-in or the calendar.
When we change the parental controls setting to "allow all websites" she can log onto the calendar without any problem.
We also tried adding the various google web address strings under the "customize" tab for "always allow these sites" while still leaving the "try to limit adult websites" as the overall setting.  Even with the specific sites approved - she still can't access the calendar.
What's up??  Isn't there a way we can allow her to see the calendar without having to give her unecessary exposure to anything on the net?

So after I made my original post above I continued searching the forums and found the answer below.  It refers to Googla Mail but their solution worked just as well for Google Calendar.  Who knew it would be so simple.  I just went into "always allow these sites" and put in the 1e100.net and it worked like a champ!  The adult sites are still screened out but she can now access Google without any issue.

Apr 10, 2010 1:52 PM (in response to atobteam)
Finally!!!!! This solution works! Yea!  There are two scenarios I know of: 1. If you have users for whom under "Parental Controls/Content" you've chosen "Allow access only to these websites" (they can only get to the websites that are bookmarked by you) and if Google Mail was already a bookmark, then just do this: click the plus sign below the list in "Parental Controls/Content/Allow access only to these websites", and choose "Add Bookmark." On the pop-up, name the site "goog" or anything you want; then type in: 1e100.net in the box asking for an address. This will produce a new bookmark (named "goog" or whatever you've chosen), but will in effect just be a dummy or slave bookmark that you'll never use, but it'll allow you to get to your user's google mail sign in page by hitting the old google mail bookmark he or she used to hit. Second scenario (I have both scenarios in my home): if you have users for whom under "Parental Controls/Content" you've chosen "Try to Limit Access to Adult Websites Automatically", click the "Customize" button and then on the top of the pop-up, under "Always Allow These Websites," click the plus button and then add: 1e100.net . Then click OK. This user will now be able to get to his or her google mail sign in page.

  • Unable to activate parental control

    Hello,
I bought some months ago a black MacBook and I could use parental control in Safari without problems.
This week, I had to reinstall MacOS X and since then I can't activate parental control anymore. I tried all the actions proposed in this forum but without success. I erased the disk with 0 writing, installed MacOS X 10.4.6 in English and installed all updates so that at the end I was running MacOS X 10.4.8. I created an account and activated parental control for Safari, Mail, Finder and iChat (not dictionary). When I check parental control check mark in Safari, it is not activated and when I try to activate it, it doesn't work. I tried with user accounts with and without password, with and without limited finder. In each cases, it didn't work. Every help will be greatly appreciated because without parental control on, I can't let my boy surf on the internet.
    Black MacBook 2GHz 2GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hello once more,
    I solved the problem.
The solution was to reformat the disk using "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" instead of "Mac OS Extended case sensitive(Journaled)".
Thanks to all for their help.
You are welcome, thanks for the reply back & letting us know that it was your original? format choice that was the problem, & reformatting to Mac OS Extended Journaled [ as my computers are all formatted] helped get you sorted.
I am not clear why one would chose to format as such, this is new to me.
I am very glad you can now feel more secure in allow your child on line.
At least i knew that the parental controls do work as I underlined,
I am curious exactly how the case-sensitive format prevents them from working/being active.
For others reading this thread topic, here is Apples document on,Mac OS X Choosing UFS or Mac OS Extended (HFS Plus) formatting
And this from Macfixit, The dangers of case-sensitive HFS+
Panther includes Case-sensitive HFS as a potential file system. However, implementing a case-sensitive file system in OS X has some significant hurdles, the most compelling being that many current Mac OS applications that work with files will need to be updated to provide case-sensitivity themselves. This especially the case for backup and disk repair utilities. For example, using the two example files above, most backup applications will assume that they are the same file, and only back one up. (Dantz has already posted a warning to this effect in a Retrospect support document, stating, "Retrospect 5.1 does not recognize case-sensitive file names. If 'file' and 'FILE' exist in the same directory, only one will be backed up.") Likewise, most current Mac OS X disk utilities would see the two example files as two files with the same name, causing a number of problems when trying to repair/rebuild/reconcile drives and drive directories.
In other words, Case-sensitive HFS is not (yet) for the masses. We're sure there will be a curious type (or forty) who will be determined to figure out how to enable it on the standard OS X client. If such a procedure becomes available, we urge you to remember the old saying: just because you can doesn't mean you should.
I also read this,10.4: Use Adobe Creative Suite with case-sensitive HFS
    quote from link....
"One of the downsides I have noticed of a case-sensitive file system is that Adobe's CS 2 Suite does not work at all. The solution is simple though:"
See the link for more.... a learning experience for me, thanks.
    Enjoy your Macbook!
    Kind regards,
    Eme'~[ )
