BT Netprotect vs Windows Defender vs McAfee

I have BT Netprotect - do I need to run Windows Defender, or do they do the same thing? Is there a potential for clashes between the two.
Windows Defender updates (KB915597) appears to have been crashing my computer, producing blue screens of death. Could this be due to clashes with BT Netprotect, or can I turn off Defender?
I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium, SP2
Additionally, McAfee does a periodic scan and tells me I am not protected against viruses. I thought Netprotect WAS McAfee!

Yes you can turn off Windows Defender but before you do read on and yes Netprotect is McAfee.

Did you have McAfee on your computer before you installed Netprotect. If so this could be causing a conflict.
BtNetprotect Plus / McAfee can cause problems on some computers. Just do a “Netprotect or McAfee search on this forum.  It also uses a lot of resources. The general advice is to uninstall BTNetprotect / McAfee and install another antivirus such as Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG Free 2013 or Avast free. Microsoft Security Essentials will work well on your computer and will integrate with Windows Defender
To uninstall follow this guide. Make sure that you also run the McAfee removal tool after you have restarted.

If you want to keep BtNetprotect / McAfee then an uninstall and reinstall usually sorts it out, at least for a short time. To do that carry out the uninstall / reinstall as per this link.

    I can't enable Windows Defender.  I get the message "Windows Defender has been turned off and isn't monitoring your computer."  So I used the McAfee removal tool, then rebooted my PC, but I still can't enable it. 
    Perhaps my laptop came with security software other than McAfee and I just don't remember uninstalling it?  Does anyone know if an Ideapad Y580 comes with software other than McAfee?  Or has any idea how I can enable Windows Defender?

    I have windows 8 x64 that came preloaded with trial McAfee. Uninstalled after trial and security screens inform Defender turned off. Selecting to turn off does not configure the change. What is easiest way to fix issue and "move on" ?

  • Windows defender update 20 july 2013

    I have had a number of problems with the latest windows defender updates 1.155.29.0, 311.0 and 565.0 which has meant i have had to restore my system three times as when i installed it first mcafee and broadband did not connect. I have managed to restore and hide these updates. The update was 20mb. Has anyone else experience conflict with this ?

    What Windows system are you using?
    If it's Windows 8 then Windows Defender is an antivirus program that is turned on by default. If you installed BTNetprotect/McAfee it should have turned off Defender when it was installed but it could be that rather than turning it off they are conflicting and this has been aggravated when you installed the update.
    If that is the case my advice would be to uninstall BTNetprotect. It can cause problems on some computers and hogs resources. Windows Defender is a capable antivirus program.
    If you are using another Windows version then Windows Defender should only be working as an anti-malware program and should work alongside BTNetprotect/McAfee however I would still advise uninstalling it for the above reasons and installing another free antivirus program such as Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast Free or AVG 2013 free.
    If you do decide to uninstall BTNetprotect follow this guide and remember to use the uninstall BTNetprotect tool after you have restarted your computer.

    windows defender w.app is stuck and wont start, definitions are out of date but
    update failed several times, I've tried to reactivate Windows Defender. to no avail:

  • MS windows defender and iSQLplus

    Installing MS windows defender messed up my iSQLplus. I had placed a question in a different thread, but realize that the correct name of the software may help others.
    I would log in (mostly as scott) and query the database and get a security message to the effect that hacking this computer was illegal.
    It did NOT affect SQLplus.
    Uninstalling MS defender did not fix the problem.
    I fixed the problem by doing a system restore to 2 days before I installed windows defender (and anti key-logging software).

    Thank you so much for your detailed response. I disabled McAfee and uninstalled it through Control Panel. I did not run the MCPR.EXE file, since it seemed unnecessary.
    Windows Defender is running, and that's all I needed.

  • TB freezes when deleting emails. Only anti-virus is Windows Defender.

    When I click on an email message and click one of the <delete> buttons, the little blue circle comes on, and I get a message "(not responding)". That is one click of <delete> for one email line. Usually happens after deleteing a few previous emails

    I checked. Do _not_ have McAfee, Norton, Avast, etc. on system or as Add-ons.
    Tried restarting Windows 8.1. a few times. Problem remains.

    I've seen this issue on every Win 8 installation as well. It seems to be caused by contention; Thunderbird and Windows Defender are doing a lot of disk IO on the same files.
    The solution is simple: exclude the Thunderbird profile directory from being scanned by Defender.
    Open Windows Defender (Start -> flick up or use down button with mouse -> Look for "Windows Defender" under the "Windows system" header).
    Go to Settings, "Excluded files and locations" and use the Browse button.
    Find c:\users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles
    Select this directory, then press the "Add" button.
    If the directory is shown in the bottom dialog, press "Save changes".
    All done, Thunderbird should be ready to go, without performance issues.
    @dev team: this might be something you want to automate!

    I've got a question about Windows defender: I have a brand new Thinkpad T440S (Windows 8.1 Pro) and
    Windows Defender cannot open. There is a message saying: “This app has been turned off and isn’t monitoring your computer”. Impossible to turn it on”. When I try to launch it (R+service.mcs + windows defender), I still have this message: “Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source.”
    What should I do about this issue?

    For Windows 8 (and later), Microsoft renamed its Microsoft Security Essentials anti-malware software to Windows Defender.  Which can be a bit confusing since Windows Defender was the name of the anti-spyware program Microsoft shipped for Windows 2000 through Windows 7, and worked alongside other anti-malware programs.
    Windows Defender (the version for Windows 8 and newer) is a full anti-malware program and cannot be run in combination with other anti-malware programs such as those from Kaspersky, McAfee, Symantec and so forth.

  • CSA and Windows Defender

    We are installing CSA 6.0.1. My question is an easy one that I can't seem to find the answer to. With CSA installed, do you need Windows defender installed as well. CSA does not automatically disable it like other vendor software does (symantec, mcafee). Our Vista machines still have defender running but whenever we try to update the definitions via WSUS, CSA blocks the update because it sees the update as a virus. I am thinkng that we can just disable defender because it is not needed but I can't find it anywhere in Cisco's documentation.

    Easy fix is disable defender, csa does a much better job. Otherwise you can add the wsus process to your mass software deployment class, and csa should allow these updates. If your other wsus updates work, then there must be something special about the defender updates, and you should go through the log, when defender is trying to update to see what gets blocked.

  • I have disabled all Kaspersky security, windows firewall and windows defender and Itunes still will not update my Ipod touch 4th gen to IOS 5, Helppppp!

    I can't get the IOS 5 to work for windows Vista.  I'm running kaspersky pure 2.0, windows firewall and windows defender.  I have turned them all off, I then attach my Ipod 4th gen and I get the "cannot connect to itunes update server".  I ran diagnostics in itunes and it tells me I dont have a internet connection.  I'm on the internet right now, and I DO have a internet connection, but it tells me Itunes says otherwise.  I'm able to send this message on the same pc with internet connection but keep running into this error.  I have now read discussiong boards through apple and disabled all my firewalls, still no luck.  I was able to update the lates version of itunes, and just waiting to get my ipod updated now, please help me.

    On the computer you should be able to go to the network properites. Go to the TCP part and unchec the line that says obtaind DNS automatically and check the one that says use the following. Add the 8.8.8.8 and Google other 8.8.4.4.

  • Windows Defender Beta 2 Stops iTunes 6.03 From Installing Completely

    There is a bug with Windows Defender Beta 2 and iTunes.
    I thought I would tell apple and Microsoft about it. Check microsoft beta newsgroups.
    When you install iTunes 6.03 and have Windows Defender Beta 2 running it will cause iTunes setup to error with the following:

    Clicking ok and install continues like normal and iTunes is installed ok. Have not run into any problems because of the errror in iTunes.
    Now after installing iTunes Windows Defender Beta 2 flags its install since its trying to install a service.

    Katrina--Correct me if I'm wrong but there is no way to turn off the new Windows Defender software (it's the replacement for the Microsoft Anti-Spy beta software). Fortunately, I already had iTunes 6.02.23 installed before I installed Windows Defender earlier this week. I had some big problems accessing the music store yesterday, but I've resolved them. (And I really don't think Defender was causing the problems. I think the music store home page was overwhelmed by people participating in the current contest.) If there's a conflict between Defender and iTunes it helps those of us using both to know this. Then we can figure out troubleshooting solutions to resolve the problem. If we come up with workarounds, it helps everyone on this board, doesn't it?
    P.S., I understand Spybot has problems with the newest version of iTunes too. The mini-store is the culprit. I don't think these programs prevent you from using iTunes they just don't like some of the features in the mini store--so they warn you about them.

    I was working on my mother's computer and somehow Windows Defender got turned off.  There is spyware all over the computer, on every website popups, ads, highlighted words that lead to websites.  I tried turning on Windows Defender, but I get this
    message:  "An error has occurred in the program during initialization.  If this problem continues, please contact your system administrator."  Error Code: 0x80073afc
    I would like to know how to get Windows Defender to work properly and to rid my mother's computer of all of this.  I tried system restore and it only goes back a couple of weeks.  I did Microsoft Safety Scanner, and it removed at least 2 viruses.

    According to your description ,it seems that the machine has been injected by virus .
    I suggest to run the Microsoft Safety Scanner in safe mode .
    To get into safe mode ,restart the machine and keep pressing "Shift",troubleshoot ,advanced ,startup settings ,then restart to choose safe mode with network.
    Then we can run "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" or "sfc /scannow"to check the health of the whole system files .

    I would like to use Windows Defender as Corporative antivirus and manage it by powershell cmdlets.
    But there is a lot of Windows 7 computers in my network and these cmdlets not work in it.
    I've updated powershell on these computers to 4.0, imported Defender module to powershell, but I can't execute cmdlets.
    Result: Invalid namespace.
    I tried to replace files in defender folder but it didn't work as well.
    Does anybody know if there is any way to update windows 7 defender to 8.1 defender or how can I apply cmdlets to windows 7 etc.

    This is not possible. The CMDLets for Windows Defender are new coming in Windows 8.1. They are not applied to Windows 7. Furthermore, the Windows 8.1 defender is quiet different with Windows 7. We just could update the definitions but
    not whole applications that only for Windows 8.1.
