BT Network Upgrade - I'm Disappointed

Hi Folks,
On 19 January (2010), I received an e-mail from the BT migration team informing me that I was to expect a network upgrade on 22 January. Then, on 23 January, I received a further e-mail from BT saying that the network upgrade had been completed. That was 13 days ago. I was told that my broadband service would be improved from 'up to 8Mbps' to 'up to 20Mbps'.
Using the BT Speedtester online service, I just checked my download speed and it measured 1704kbps, i.e. a mere 1.704Mbps. This is the same (give or take a few kbps) download speed that I was getting before the network upgrade.
To say I'm disappointed is an understatement!
Has anyone else had a network upgrade - only to find that it didn't make a scrap of difference?
Anon
P.S. I should perhaps add that my modem/router is left switched on 24/7.

The upgrade was the technology that the exchange uses to connect to the outside world.
The cable between the exchange and your premises is still the same cable and has not been modified in anyway.
Therefore you will still get roughly the same speed as the speed you recieve is decided primarly based on the length and quality of the cable you use to connect to the exchange.
if you were getting a full 8Mb on an up to 8Mb service, then you would get more speed.
This is how rate adaptive ADSL works, and until you are on a Fibre product, is how it will likely remain. It allows you to connect at 'whatever the line is capable of up to a pre-determined limit or 8 or 20 or 24Mb.'
What you might get, is a peak times you may get a little more throughput, ie not as restricted when downloading files/browsing the web as the 21CN network has a bit more capability than the 20CN network.

  • Network upgrade completed and no internet

Well BT emailed me are pleased to tell me that my network upgrade has been completed on the 22nd June. They actually did it 21st June so good on them for doing it early. However, since this time I have had no internet connection. My BT Home Hub connects at 10,800 downstream with an upstream of 888 kbps but I get nowhere on the 'net. BT Home Hub is v1.00, so I have wireless, data and broadband lights no internet light.
Three BT engineers have been scheduled. First said, issue is at the exchange and he would pass the call over. Still not working when BT India called back. An engineer was scheduled Friday...no show. An engineer was scheduled today...no show.
So, one upgrade, 3 engineers, umpteen minutes on the phone and still no internet connection. I am so very annoyed! Trying to be civil to the poor BT India people but slowly going mad.
Can a BT forum mod help me before I take a gun from my cabinet and either point it at the router or at my head?
EDIT: Yet another engineer booked in for Wednesday.

I know exactly what's wrong with your internet connection because it took us over a week to get ours reinstated after the 'Retail Migration Team' had kindly updated our network.  What they are keeping quiet is that the old white HomeHub (which we had) is not compatible with the network upgrade so it will never work while you have the old hub.  Trying to make the call centre in India understand what was wrong was **bleep** - even though I have to say they are very polite and do try to help, but they can only follow their technical script.  We knew for a fact that our equipment was all working ok and it was to do with the upgrade.   An engineer finally called and he was on the ball enough to know that, after thoroughly checking us out, our HomeHub was the problem and I wonder if BT knew that the old hubs may have this problem but don't rush to help you if they can save the money by having to replace your hub to a nice new black one!  The engineer instructed to phone the call centre again and tell them that they had to send me a new hub.  I did ring and by now, probably because of me moaning, my call was diverted to the BT Priority Care Team who, once they were involved, sorted out it all out.  They said that my hub was not compatible and was out of warranty as we had had it so long.  I told them I was not going to pay for a new hub  as their network upgrade had caused this.  They totally agreed and within two days a nice new black hub arrived via Royal Mail, I plugged it in and hey presto, we have internet.  The BT Team then called every day for a week to make sure we had no problems.
So don't be fobbed off with engineers and call centres telling you to reset buttons etc etc.  YOUR HOMEHUB does not work with the new upgrade and it is for them to replace it with a new one with no payment due from  yourself.  Hope this all helps and stick to your guns.

  • Slower speeds after network upgrade

    Hi folks,
On July 19th my exhange received a network upgrade(Glenrothes South,i believe) and since then my speeds have dropped by around 20% ant both peak and off-peak times.
Phoned BT and was told about the 10 day settling time, which i was already aware of and never notied there to be any change during and after the period in speed whenever i have had a braodband connection installed,i monitor this closely btw.
Does anyone have any advice on my next course of action to remedy this as i fail to see why i should continue to pay for a supposedly upgraded service which is infact worse than before.
     Thanks ,in advance

  • Trying to Get the Network Upgrade Cost Down...

At my work, we are trying to choose between Dell and Cisco for our network upgrade.  Dell has got Cisco beat on the price and a lot of the specs too.
    Our current setup:
    Core:
         Cisco 4510
         1Gbps copper to servers
1Gbps fiber to 4 network closets (including our server room)
    Networking Closets:
         2-4 switches per networking closet (3560s, 3550s, 1x 2960, 1x 4507)
    Our needs:
    Core:
         10Gbps fiber to networking closets
         10Gbps copper to servers
    Networking Closets:
PoE ports for all users' phones (computers will connect through phone)
Redundant links to the Networking closets
What we were planning (our quote included all of the FET and SFP modules):
    Core:
         7004
         N7K-SUP2 (Qty. 2)
         N7K-F248XP-25E (Qty. 2)
         N2K-C2232T8F-E (Qty. 3)
    Networking Closets:
2960 (Qty. 3 per networking closet (including server room))
         Stacking modules for the 2960s
Our plan is over budget by a decent amount.  Nothing huge, but we won't be able to get the budget extended that high.  We were told that Cisco would come down from their initial price a little to help fit our budget, but they didn't budge a cent.  We had a conference call with a Cisco rep. yesterday and he just talked bad about Dell 90% of the time.  They didn't help us and they didn't offer us a better solution.  They just said that we can't afford them.  Dell has been much more helpful.
I have never worked with a Dell network, and I'm not particuarly thrilled about the idea of it, but Dell is nearly half of the price (including warranties and and a training class).  I want to go with Cisco, but they aren't helping us at all.
Does anyone out there have an idea on making the project cheaper?
    Thanks!

I image the big ticket item is the Nexus 7K core.  What about a 6500 or 4500 core?  In fact, if your 4510 is an E chassis, you might reuse it.
I see you also mention using 2960s in the server room.  If so, instead you might reconsider reusing the 4507 you also mention.
Also if the 4507 is an E chassis, and the 4510 is not, depending on your 10g port needs, the 4507 might be used as your 10g core.
Of course, a Nexus 7K offers tremendous bandwidth and performance, and a huge number of 10g ports, plus some other features unique to the series, but what do you really require?  Reason I ask, you have one of Cisco's top notch data center devices, but then you're using 2960S stacks?

  • Exchange "network upgrade" has reduced my speeds

My exchange has just had its "network upgrade" (according to the emails I received)  and I would be grateful for some technical info. I presume this is 21CN (router says G.992.5 annex A).
I'm using a HHub 1.0. I haven't taken any action myself about any upgrade or new contract. I'm out of contract at the moment, on the old Option 3 Broadband with BBTalk and BTVision (no packages).
The exchange work was done about about a week ago according to the email, although there were internet connection problems for a fortnight before that. It's halved my IP and download speed. I only discovered that was the problem when I got the upgrade emails.
1 - how long does it take to settle down after the inbterference of the conversion?
2 -Is there anything I can do to recover what used to be a good solid synch under my old ADSLMax, at double what I have now? (I used to get an IP solidly above 5000 and very stable connection)
3 - does the IP profile and synch rate adjust on its own (with 21CN) , without restarting the router or reconnecting the line or should I try a restart every couple of days? Which will give me the best chance of getting a better IP profile over time?
4 - Do IP profiles get "stuck" on 21CN like they sometimes did on ADSLMax?
Does anyone have any technical data references about 21CN - presumably all my current BRAS profile/IP Profile tables are now out of date?
What sites have good information and  support on this please? (preferably 3rd party ones).

Thanks - that is the table I was looking for, and I'm assuming it still applies to 21CN.
According to the table on that link then, I should see a profile increase, as my last synch (3643/711) was above the upper range (3392) for my current profile (2500). My last throughput was 2357.
I'll try and be patient and wait!
Unanswered question - does the higher rescynch and hopefully IP profile increase, happen without a user router restart?
Anyone know WHAT the 21CN upgrade actually is? What it entails? The available BT information is incredibly vague? Seems to be about babies reaching for the sky and world class consumer experiences.

  • Re-activating Premiere 9 elements after network upgrades - Can't!

    Hi there,
Bit of a faux pas but I had Premiere Elements 9 installed on the 2 machines I (personally) use at work. A Month or so ago we did a massive network upgrade and my machines were rebuilt. I wasn't aware at the time that I had to manually deactivate the software and so on re-installing my serial number is no longer valid as the activation software still thinks the program installed on 2 other machines...neither of which, of course, exists any more.
spent 25 minutes on the phone waiting to speak to someone but i have a job....thoughts/help?
    Thanks
    M Wells

    Hi M Wells,
You will have to get in touch with an Adobe support representative to get this fixed.
I would advise you to get in touch with chat support in case you are unable to get through to anyone on the phone.
Please click on this link to get to the support page:
On the page, click on "I need help activating or deactivating my software"
You should see the "Chat Now" button after a few seconds. In case all chat support agents are busy, please wait for a few minutes on the page and the chat button will appear once an agent is free.
After you connect to a support representative, explain the situation and they will be able to assist you right away. Please have the Product Serial number handy as you may be requested to provide that.
    Thanks

  • Network upgrade in small/medium business

    Hello,
I have been asked by a friend to do an upgrade to his business network.  I would appreciate any help and suggestions.
There are several things which need to be accomplished:
Implement a VPN solution for remote access
Increase bandwidth to support new IP security cameras, which will send video to a video recording device
Extend the network farther out into the shop area, in order to connect cameras and add computers to the network
    The current setup consists of
A 24 port 10/100 switch in the main office area.  15 of the ports appear to be in active use.
A consumer-level ADSL termination unit, currently with 6/1 ADSL service
A 10/100 switch half way towards the back of the shop facility, apparently acting only as a repeater to overcome distance limitations
An 8-port switch and Wi-Fi access point in a small office area in the shop, which serves a couple of computers and machines.
So far, we have come to the following conclusions:
A gigabit backbone between different areas of the plant is something we need to do
A fiber link from the front office to the back, eliminating the need for signal boosting mid way, would be a good option.
We would like the VPN to be accessible from mobile phone/tablet devices as well as personal computers.
We would like be able to do some sort of traffic shaping so that a large upload or download from one computer to the Internet cannot slow everyone else to a crawl.
We will be adding a 2 or 3 computers and eventually 6 or 7 IP cameras in the back shop and probably similar number in the front of the shop (close to the office).
I would like to go with Cisco equipment if it can fit within the budget.  My experience has been you get what you pay for with the cheaper gear.
I would appreciate any ideas on how best to do this upgrade.  Thanks!!!

  • Cannot upgrade TV - ver disappointed

I'm sure there's nothing that can be done at this point but I'm very disappointed.  VERY.  We have purchased a few large TVs from best buy in the past - the 3d plasma that we got three years ago just quit - repairs were up to $750 so we quit and cut our losses, went to get a new tv.  husband was feeling down about the cost after the debacle of the plasma tv - so we got a samsung LCD tV - to be delivered and installed tomorrow (Wednesday) - I called to see about upgrading the TV - the geek squad would be bringing it anyway - thought I could upgade and have them bring the 4k tv and suprise the husband. Nope - said I could upgrade, lbut would lose my delivery date- which would then spoil the suprise. I'm already booked for a delivery  - I fail to understand why this cannot be worked out - very very disappointed with Best Buy.

    Hello mariaob-
Upgrading the TV you ordered to a 4K television is an incredibly nice gesture on your part for your husband.  I’m sorry to hear that we were not able to offer the ability to exchange and still deliver on your original delivery date as you wanted.
It looks like you have already reached out to us through our FaceBook channel and Melissa for our team has responded to that email explaining why we would not have been able to accommodate this request.  If you have any further questions, I would encourage you to connect back with her, I’m sure she would be happy to help if she can!
Thanks for connecting with us and I hope you and your husband enjoy whichever TV you end up going with!

    Hi
You are on adsl2+ which is the up to 20mb service however due to your line attenuation ( line length ) approx3.5km you will see very little difference in speed as you are in the change over region of benefiting from the upgrade unfortunately there is no way of improving your speed further due to your distance from the exchange sorry I cannot offer any better news

  • SLOW BROADBAND SPEED AFTER NETWORK UPGRADE IN MY ...

On 15 Dec 10 I received an email from BT Broadband saying " congratulations the BB Network has been upgraded in my area   ( Woodley, Berkshire, Exchange) I was warned I would experience reduced BB speads for up to 10 days then would see improvement. Before the upgrade I was getting an average download speed of 3670kbps, after 10 days the download speed never rose above 1000 kbps. I contacted the BT Call Center in India who confirmed that there was an external problem with my BB and sent me a new BT Home Hub2. I set the new hub up on 6th Jan 2011, however there was no improvement in down or upload speed even over the following 10 days.
On 17 jan 2011 I contacted the Call centre in India again, and it was confirmed by them that the fault was with BT retail / wholesale servers. Also since the problem had been outstanding for so long they " escalated the fault to BT Wholesale, and also booked an ADSL Engineer to come to my home on Wed 3rd Feb ( am visit). I am not sure what he will be able to achieve if the fault is external.!
Since 17 Jan the Call Centre has telephoned me every day to ask if there has been any improvement in my BB speed ( sometimes they have phoned 3 times a day! ) I am impressed with the daily contact from them however they seem powerless to get BT Wholesale to action the fault despite the fact that the fault has been escalated in priority.

Good news. We’re rolling out our faster broadband and we’ll be upgrading our network in your area on 06-Aug-10. This’ll make the things you do online quicker.
Before the upgrade I was achieving a connection speed of approx. 7000/448 kbps. A few days after the upgrade I did see a brief improvement of around 7700/872 kbps. However for the last week or so I seem to be firmly planted at 5463/782 kbps.
Is there anything I should do to improve this?
Here are the results of the btspeedtest and some ADSL stats:

    Hi there Yvon,
Thanks for the post and welcome to the forum.
Not sure what is going on here without running a few checks from my end.  Can you please drop me an email to [email protected], include your BT account details and the link to this post.  I will find out what is going on with your connection.

  • Gigabit network upgrades

    What I have:
-a 1.66 Intel Mini (currently setup to use wireless)
    -Airport Express Wireless
    -10/100 base T wired router
    -250GB USB2.0/FireWire external drive.
    What I'd like to do...
Upgrade my external HDD to something like this:
    http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=279
..That is networked so that I could access the drive from anywhere (mac or PC...or other).
I assume this would work fine if I just plug the new drive into my 10/100 base T router- but since the Mini supports gigabit ethernet, should I just go out and buy a 1000base T router too? (and of course wire my Mini to the router)
Or are there some other bottlenecks that I'm not considering that would make it moot.
...and while I'm at it, why doesn't the new Airport Extreme have gigabit?

    Hi-
    Welcome to discussions!
An under $50 graphics card would leave you with a used Rage 128 Pro, which is probably what you have.
You can try and buy an ATI Radeon 9000 Mac Pro (64 or 128mb), but since they are no longer produced, you will have to watch eBay. A used 9000 will sell for between $50 and $150. Since there is a shortage of graphics upgrades at the moment, the 9000 is bringing a premium.
Other than that, a new ATI Radeon 9800 256mb is all that may be had in "Pro Mac" version, but they are backordered from ATI. When they do become available again, the 9800 is $240-$250.
You can try and find a "flashed" PC graphics card, the Radeon 9800 128mb is most common. One of these (on eBay) will run between $120-$150.
I am not sure why you are having trouble formatting the drive with the installed Disk Utility. Do you have the jumpers properly placed for operation as a slave? Check the following chart:
    http://www.seagate.com/images/support/en/us/mxoatajumpers.gif
As far as your hard drive goes, your GE will only support up to 128gb without a controller card, so, if that is acceptable, I advise you to purchase (or find) an OS Tiger disk to get your formatting done. This is also because, in case of system trouble, the OS install disk is a vital tool in the first stages of repair. You can get a Tiger install disk here:
    http://www.applerescue.com/#os9
You may also buy a version of Drive Genius, which is a good formatting and repair utility, or, DiskWarrior.

  • BT Network Upgrade

I recieved an email about 2-3 days before the scheduled upgrade was to occur, it has now past that date and I have been told it may take up to 10 days for my line to settle back down.
I am having some difficulty and just need to reassure myself what I'm experiencing is normal, very often I have been getting a solid amber light on my BT Homehub 1.5, all connection is lost and the router needs a manual restart to gain any sort of connection once more, the times of connection are varied, the connection could hold for anything from 10 minutes to 1 hour, and again it goes solid amber. Is this something to be worried about or will my connection eventually resume normal stability?
    Regards,
    Andy

yeah dont use things like speedtest to tell your your speed, they only show the data rate of the download at the time.
the bt one shows things like the ip profile and sync speed, its also recorded in there data base each time the check is run so they can see our tellign the truth when you ring up to complain hence why it asks for your phone number.
it does sound like the filter was dodgy and that messed with your connection, the training period is normaly 10 days and if your highest stable profile was set at 2500 then it will have stuck with it for a few days before startign to increase (if the system didnt bug out)
the slow down during evenings and weekends are normal there down to traffic (aslo called network contention ratio) so whiolst your cabale of getting more due to congestion casued by number of users the system cant provide it all the time.
it sounds like since your inside the traiing period though things should improve providing you dont mess about with the hub (force resets or power it down) if after the training period is finished and the hubds runnign stble agaion at a good sync rate your profile doenst increas your options are email the mod team giving account details and a link to this thread or ring the help desk and pray you get someone who actually has a clue about broadband issues and how things are supposed to work (a lot of them seem to be fixed on a script)
