BT Newsgroup access

Ok you might find this a bit unusual but i know hat the problem is i would like advice on how i can connect to the newsgroups!
i get "480 error authentication" on connection which menas my ip adddress is not in the range submitted by BT to the newsgroup access servers to allow me to connect
Question is therefore do i keep disconnecting my router to obtain a range within its limits, or are BT expanding their list of new ip addresses to newsgroup servers so that "all newbies" can get access?

It seems that you didn't get the message that the BT news server is closing permanently.  As liquorice says, it was supposed to have been turned off on the 3rd December, but was actually working up to the early hours of the 1st January.
Here's BT's information page: http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/51205/?s_cid=con_FURL_giganews
There is a special offer if you want to sign up to Giganews.  They used to provide BT's service, and are very well respected.  Unfortunately, they are far from being free.
For text newsgroups, a free alternative is Eternal September: http://www.eternal-september.org/ .  Their server works for me, apart from the annoying security warnings (which is a known problem, highlighted on their web page).

Pop up then ask if I want to download first 500 headers ... click proceed
But after a few minutes no threads received and it gives "Thunderbird connection timed out"

  • Newsgroups

Come home tonight to find I cannot access Newsgroups on usenet (news.btinternet.com)
I believe it because according to my hub I have got a new IP address in the last few hours.
It would seem to me that this IP address is somehow unknown to the news server and therefore it won't let me onto the newsgroups.
I could reset hub untill I get a working IP address but how can BT forget to register new IP address with whoever runs their news servers?
Is it something worth reporting as when having previous problems ages ago I was told by the Indian help desk that BT don't support news groups which is ironic really as theres a help page saying all about them at
    http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9827/kw/bt.broadband.announce/c/346,412,1865

    Hi. Welcome to the forums.
There are a few IP ranges that have this issue I'm afraid. When BT had webspace, an IP address range was never added to the firewall, despite numerous requests for 6 years!
I was told that when a new IP range was added to the pool, there was a "tick sheet" of items to check, including the now defunct webspace ftp access and newsgroup access (using giganews). It appears that this tick sheet has not been followed. Unfortunately the helpdesk don't seem to know all the products in use - hence they perhaps are uncertain of where to raise the issue.

Get your FREE web-based e-mail and newsgroup access at:
    http://MailAndNews.com
Create a new mailbox, or access your existing IMAP4 or
POP3 mailbox from anywhere with just a web browser.

I hadn't tried using local variables. Someone else suggested using shift registers which worked out great.

  • Variable action in forms

I am new to forms, my HTML and CSS knowledge are poor. I have
used Dreamweaver in a basic way for many years but now I have a
need to create a form with an action that can be varied by the
perosn filling in the form. More specifically, I want to include a
drop down list of peopel to whom the form can be emailed. I know
about mailto: and I can easily make the form email to a single
address but I need to have a choice of many email addresses.
If this can be done, how can it be done? I'd appreciate your
    help.

    Yes -
    UNIX shell account.
That's all you need to know.
A simple PHP script added to the top of the page will do the
    trick.
Can you post a link to the page, please?

  • No more NNTP for Adobe Forums

I just learned that Adobe has discontinued NNTP (Newsreader/Newsgroup) access to these forums. I only found out because I couldn't connect via NNTP and came here to the 'general' forum to register a problem ... which turned out to be 'a feature'.
I'm afraid that I won't be coming by here as often, if at all. Going to a website to see if there's any activity is a PITA compared to the NNTP alternative, where the group name just sits there among others and gets highlighted when there's new activity. I posted some more detailed objections (aka whined) in the general forum.
      - Herb V B

Yes, it is unfortunate that the NNTP access is not available anymore. However, Adobe was put in a position where it was absolutely necessary to migrate from the previous service provider for the forums (the old forums and for that matter the new forums) are hosted outside of Adobe itself using third party software. For better or worse, most of the newer on-line forum software packages simply don't support NNTP anymore.
An alternative that I use (and did use with the old forums) was e-mail subscriptions to particular forums or threads providing e-mails of each new discussion and response. Yes, that results in many short e-mails in my in-box, but with appropriate rules applied, I can sort through them easily.

  • Any way to use News Group Reader for Discussions?

After the last few days of slow forums and the loss of notifications of posts... just curious. Is there any way to view these forums with a news group reader like Entourage or Halime or any Apple product?
If not... it would be nice...

    Jefferis,
Hopefully you will no longer need this as Apple Discussions performance has improved greatly, but I will point out that you can create RSS feeds from search queries.
Unfortunately there has never been enough requests for newsgroup access for us to invest it. We get about one request per year.
    Kind regards,

  • News Group Censorship

I was dumbfounded to find that Verizon has restricted newsgroup access to what it calls "the Big 8."  Is there any possible other explanation than CENSORSHIP to explain this?  It surely can't be bandwidth with all the video downloads that are occurring everywhere else.
In a time when the Chinese look ridiculous for their attempts at Internet restrictions how could Verizon think locking out a portion of the Internet would be acceptable?  We have been fairly pleased with Fios but we will be switching to another provider if this policy stays in effect.

Thank you for your inquiry, Concerned.
We believe that limiting our Newsgroup service to the Big 8 groups will dramatically cut down on the availability of child pornography, which we believe is an important step in the overall fight against the exploitation of children online. We remain committed to combating child pornography and where we discover it on any Verizon server, we will immediately take action consistent with our terms of service to remove the content and report the matter to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Verizon's decision to limit its Newsgroup service to the Big 8 hierarchies does not prevent you or any other customer from accessing alt newsgroups through other Newsgroup services, including commercial Newsgroups as well as web-based services like Google Groups which are available at no charge.

  • Problem with MT-Newswatcher

I am a long-time Usenet newsgroup reader. MT-Newswatcher is my newsgroup reader of choice. I recently canceled my giganews newsgroup account because it wasn't cost effective. I am now trying to configure MT-Newswatcher to work with newsgroups.comcast.net but it will not authenticate.
I opened up a chat session with comcast's tech support, but all they know about is Outlook Express. The Comcast representative did confirm that I am using the correct userid and password though. The only recommendation I got from the Comcast person was to use Outlook Express, which is silly.
I am wondering if anyone on this forum has gotten newsgroup access to work through newsgroups.comcast.net and if so, please tell me what you did in MT-Newswatcher to do it?
    Thanks,
    Stan

I later found out that access to Comcast's GIGAnews server is limited to only when I connect through Comcast. Not one person at Comcast told me that when I called them from my office, but when I tried at home, it worked fine.

  • NNTP - i.e. newsgroup style access?

    Hi all,
I know I'm probably beating my head off a brick wall, but is there anyone else
out there who regrets the (virtual) passing of newsgroups?
The newsreader paradigm is vastly superior to the browser one for the workings
of these fora - browsers are slow - following threads means having to download
the whole thread everytime and there's no kill file.
The comp.databases.oracle.* have become a sad joke with more spam for pr0n and
getting bits of your anatomy enlarged than Oracle material.
I'm sure it wouldn't require a brain surgeon to produce an NNTP feed.
    Just a thought Oracle...?
    Paul...

    >
NNTP will not support Oracle SSO authentication. Ah... I see what you're driving at.
Or account registration. You can have password protected access to NNTP servers - the one I use (news.x-privat.org - sounds
dodgy but is legit) is free and password protected.
Or display the terms of use, copyright, and other notices that the lawyers insist on to limit Oracle liability
and protect Oracle's IP and copyrights. Can be done at registration? I mean, who bothers to look at the permanent posts at the
top of the thread lists (except maybe once)?
Then there's marketing that will lament the lack of being able to punt brand recognition and > logos and the like via NNTP.
    Another good point.
Not to mention the issue of support - do you honestly think the Internet web 2.0 idiots of today can
deal with NNTP and news readers? Hell, they post product related questions in this very forum,
despite the forum's title...My idea was to offer it as an auxiliary possibility - not as a complete replacement for the web
interface - for those who wish to avail of it.
So it is not the technical side that is the challenge - it making it work while adhering to, and meeting
of, business requirements. Providing basic forum support. Etc.It was pretty much a forlorn hope anyway - I think that the death of NNTP is a glaring example
of progress not always being a good thing.
Anyway - Oracle is looking for an alternative content hosting s/w platform to replace the old (and discontinued)
Jives product currently used. So from that perspective, the minimal will be done technically too. Anything done
will be thrown away when Jives is replaced. Never mind making technical changes to a product that is straining
to deal with OTN volumes and for which there is no bug fix support either (as I understand the situation).I don't see why something coudn't be thrown together using APEX? It ran Metalink (maybe not a reference ;) ). I
know nothing about what Beehive does - but I would have thought that the forums functionality as is
wouldn't be beyond the capabilities of Oracle - this is definitely an area where Oracle should have
an offering - a Google of "web based business collaboration software" brings up a truckload of hits.

  • Accessing the same stateful session bean from multiple clients in a clustered environment

I am trying to access the same stateful session bean from multiple
clients. I also want this bean to have failover support so we want to
deploy it in a cluster. The following description is how we have tried
to solve this problem, but it does not seem to be working. Any
              insight would be greatly appreciated!
I have set up a cluster of three servers. I deployed a stateful
session bean with in memory replication across the cluster. A client
obtains a reference to an instance of one of these beans to handle a
request. Subsequent requests will have to use the same bean and could
come from various clients. So after using the bean the first client
stores the handle to the bean (actually the replica aware stub) to be
used by other clients to be able to obtain the bean. When another
client retrieves the handle gets the replica aware stub and makes a
call to the bean the request seems to unpredictably go to any of the
three servers rather than the primary server hosting that bean. If the
call goes to the primary server everything seems to work fine the
session data is available and it gets backed up on the secondary
server. If it happens to go to the secondary server a bean that has
the correct session data services the request but gives the error
<Failed to update the secondary copy of a stateful session bean from
              home:ejb20-statefulSession-TraderHome>. Then any subsequent requests
to the primary server will not reflect changes made on the secondary
and vice versa. If the request happens to go to the third server that
is not hosting an instance of that bean then the client receives an
error that the bean was not available. From my understanding I thought
the replica aware stub would know which server is the primary host for
that bean and send the request there.
              Thanks in advance,
              Justin

If 'allow-concurrent-call' does exactly what you need, then you don't have a problem,
              do you?
Except of course if you switch ejb containers. Oh well.
