BT OpenZone in Hotels (Roaming Partners)

Hello,
Just rang BT Openzone department to find out i can not use my login credentials for BT Openzone with BT's Roaming partners, e.g. wifi in hotels.
I was under the impression that if i sign up for FON, i can use all BT Openzone networks.
I totally dont understand this and have since cancelled my FON subscription.
I was told that i can only connect to someones BT Home Hub that has Openzone or Fon enabled.  Bit impossible when you are out in the sticks and no houses with BT Fon enabled a!  Thank god for the mobile network!

CG Over An Out

Hi Raid,
I am very close to the exchange and can get the 8Mbps as advertised. My BT Home hub also shows 8 Mbps in DSL settings.
I find i only get about 1 or 2 Mbps, on rare occasions i get about 7 or 8 Mbps. Someone said to test a download of MS XPSP 3 network file which downloads at 2 Mbps.
On my sisters bt internet i get about 6 Mbps for same file and connected to the same exchange however she lives a bit further away from me.
My mobile has hsdpa or whatever it is called and seen download speeds at 2 Mbps but just seems so much faster than BT's 2 Mbps lol if you get my drift!

  • IPhone profile to set roaming partners (conexus)

Is it possible to use IPhone configuration utility to create a profile that would enforce a strict list of roaming networks?
The idea is to make sure the iPhone select only these networks when roaming even if automatic network selection is on.
There are several alliances such as conexsus in Asia which offers preferred tarrif on selected partner networks and having to manually select network each time is tedious and prone to mistakes.

Glad to hear this and thanks for sharing the solution.

  • Using your EE handset when abroad / roaming guide

Okay so first time posting hope i'm on the right bit! Just got to america and got no signal! Bought roaming global minutes and still no signal and can't make calls not even 150 to get a bit of help, can't phone the uk on the landline here either it doesnt work and i need to get in touch with the bank , tinkered with my settings a bit but to no avail... Any help please!?

Here's a quick guide for international ee roaming and some tips to get the most out of using your EE handset when you travel abroad.
    1.  Check with EE before you depart that roaming is enabled on your account.  If you have had your tariff for less than 3 months (even if switching from another EE brand), there's a good chance roaming will be disabled.  You may also have to pay a deposit to roam.
    2. It's a good idea to turn off your voicemail before you travel. Even if you don't answer a call when roaming you will be charged the standard international call cost for the incoming call (as the call is connected to your voicemail while roaming) plus the cost of another international call for the divert to your voicemail. This double charge occurs because your voicemail box is located in the UK and as such the diverted call routes back to the UK.
Send a text with the phrase remove voicemail divert to 150 will cancel the voicemail divert (sending a text with the phrase voicemail divert to 150 will re-enable the voicemail service when they return).  You can also turn voicemail diverts on or off by using the automatic menus when dialing 150 using the 'tech support' option 3 menu.
As iPhone visual voicemail uses data and it's recommended that whilst roaming, the service should be stopped to avoid any additional roaming costs. EE customers should text iPhone visual off to 150 and Orange customers should text visual off to 150 to stop the service. If you have your data turned off, you'll still be alerted that you have messages and are able to call in and listen to your voicemails in the usual way.
    3.  If you are going to be using your phone a fair bit for calls and texts and you don't have one of EE's older roaming tariffs or a 4GEE Extra tariff that includes roaming, consider purchasing one of the add-ons, which can be added via your online account or via the app before you travel.  These start from around £5 a month so work out weather it's going to be cost effective or not as if you only plan on sending a few texts, it's not going to be worth spending an extra £5 for an add-on.  Do remember to cancel these add-ons on your return to the UK otherwise they will re-occur every month.
    4. For 4GEE users, turn off 4G before you depart.  EE doesn't yet have any 4G roaming partners.  Roaming on 4G is, however, due later in 2014 (no further details available yet).  You will still be able to use 2G/3G when roaming for now though.
    5.  You don't purchase any data roaming add-ons until your actually arrive at your destination.  To use cellular data when abroad, simply turn on cellular data & data roaming and access the net using your device's web browser.  You will be automatically directed to an EE data roaming add-on purchase page. You can see the costs for data roaming here:
The cost of calls, SMS & data depends on where you are going. You can check the costs of calls, SMS & data and available Add-Ons for your destination using the Roaming Tool.
If you use up your roaming data before the 30 days, your cellular data will stop and will be automatically directed to the add-on purchase page again.  The My EE app will show you how much roaming data you have used.

As a domestic user, I do have a pay as you go BT Openzone account, in the form that you describe. I have just logged into the BTOpenzone page at http://www.btopenzone.com/index.jsp and there is an option to login to view your account.
You do not need to be connected to a hotspot to do that, so it may be worth you trying to see if you can login there, as it will prove whether your account is still active.
I have to use it if I want access to BT Openzone partner sites.
What I am wondering in your case, as a business user, is that you may only have access to the proper BTOpenzone hotspots run by BTand their roaming partners, and not the ones provided by domestic home hubs.
That is why you cannot see an option to use your account.

  • So much for unlimited wi-fi minutes

I've been a BT business broadband customer for about 12 years, and upgraded (?) last year to a BT Total Business Broadband account. It comes with unlimited wi-fi minutes or so they said. I thought this was an advance on the 6000 free minutes I had on the previous contract.
That is, until I come to use it. My old 9-digit numerical username (which they issued to me in 2009) doesn't work on BT Openzone or BT Fon, both of which want email addresses. My [email protected] email address also doesn't work as they apparently want [email protected] or [email protected] addresses only. So how am I supposed to access wi-fi ?
I phoned the BT Fon helpline this afternoon, and a very helpful gentlemen with an Asian accent spent some time trying to find the answer. What he said sounded eminently sensible - when given three options on the landing page (BT Fon, BT Openzone, BT Total Broadband) I should choose the BT Total Broadband and he assured me the numeric username would work just fine. Only problem is, the landing page doesn't give three options, and BT Total Broadband is nowhere to be seen.
So this evening I tried again. Another very helpful operator told me apologetically that she was providing support only for domestic customers, and politely asked me to re-dial, the 0845 600 7020 number, for business customers. Of course, as I immediately found, this support line works only "business" hours, 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday. Travelling tomorrow so this is b****dy useless.
The whole thing raises some odd questions, such as - why are there different brands for what ought to be one service (BT Fon, BT Openzone)? Why does it not reognise BTconnect.com email addresses? What happened to the old 9-digit usernames? Why does BT think businesses only operate 9-6 and only 5 days a week?
Angry is a mild understatement. It isn't the cost - I can buy a coffee and get "free" wifi if I really want to. It's the principle. This is something that is part of the package that I have bought, and the first time I come to use it, it's not usable.
If anyone has some clue how I get to a wi-fi landing page that gives me the option allowing me to use the old 9-digit username, I should be very grateful.

  • HT201328 I do travel to Europe several day a year. It is true that I can use the Iphone 5 in other country with no trouble ??

I do travel to Europe several day a year. It is true that I can use the Iphone 5 in other country with no trouble ??

If your phone is locked to AT&T, you can certainly travel & use your phone, but you'll have to get AT&T to provision your account for International use...select the country/countries & plan. This is very expensive, as the roaming partners set the rates & you generally pay through the nose.
And no, you can't use a local sim if your phone is locked to AT&T.

  • Buy a 3G iPad in USA and use it in France.

    Hello,
I would like to know if I buy a 3G iPad (an AT&T model) in a US Apple Store, could I use it in France ?
The AT&T iPad is it unlocked or should I unlock it before coming back to France ?
Actually, I am French and I live in France. Thanks to the change rate, it is less expensive to buy a iPad abroad, especially in the US.
Thanks in advance for your answers
    Joachim B.

So, the iPad is sim-free, isn't it ?
I have no idea what you mean by this. The GSM iPad is not locked to a telecom, unlike the Verizon iPad which can only function with Verizon or its worlwide roaming partners.
Will ALL the features of the device be operational?
All of the features are operational if Apple has the resources to serve the feature in the country where you wish to use it, and as long as a particular country has not blocked certain features. Some Middle Eastern countries have blocked the use of FaceTime in their territory. iPads bought in those countries do not have the FT app installed on them. There are no restrictions on the services of iPads operated in the USA or on the installed apps on US iPads.

  • Will a Nokia 6300 work in the United States

    Hi All
I've travelling from Australia to California in the next few weeks and am wondering if my Nokia 6300 will work over there on the Virgin network?
    Kind regards
    Michelle

Is there a Virgin network in the US? It doesn't seem to be listed here:
    http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_us.shtml
Whatever the case, your phone is a triband phone which will have the 900, 1800 and 1900 GSM frequencies. The US uses 850 and 1900, so your phone will work wherever it can get reception from a network that uses 1900, you'd have to check with your home network what its roaming partners in the US are and what frequencies they use.

  • NEW IPAD CELLULAR

I live in australia and I want to buy the new ipad cellular. I am going on holidays to the US and to New Zealand. will the cellular work in other countries or do i have to buy a different chip. oh and does the internet/cellular thing work on the plane?

You would need to check with your local Aussie cellular service provider for information regarding using their roaming partners in the US. That can be a very expensive proposition for data.
I think that your best bet in the US is to stick to wi-fi. The official iPad GSM provider in the US is AT&T and getting a SIM card from AT&T and activating an account for a short vacation time use is more trouble than it would be worth to you! At the moment there are no real prepaid options in the US, however that will be changing soon. But there isn't much information available at the moment as to whether you could just buy a SIM for an iPad that you already own.
A Kiwi will need to chime in on the situation in NZ.
As far as airline use, it differs by airline. Few, I believe, are offering cellular service at this time. Most all require that you disable any radio usage (cellular, wi-fi and Bluetooth) during flight, and especially during take offs and landings.

  • My i phone is not recognizing my passcode

My i phone is not recognizing my passcode.  Therefore disabling my phone with every wrong attempt at the passcode.

US iPhones are locked to the US carrier. They do not work with carriers in other nations, except with the roaming partners of the US carriers. US iPhone carriers do not unlock the US iPhones. If you want an unlocked iPhone you need to pay Apple full price for an unlocked phone.

  • HT5163 Can't find a sim card on verizon wireless iPhone 4

I have an iPhone purchased from VerizonWireless.  I can't find a sim card to eject -- considering having phone "unlocked" so I can get international sim card

The iPhone 4 is not an International phone.
You will be unable to use it outside the US except in areas where Verizon has CDMA roaming partners.
Talk to Verizon, I believe they have a program where they loan or rent your a GSM or World phone for International travels.

  • How is service in Santa Fe, NM?

I'll be going to Santa Fe, New Mexico at the end of September for a few days. How is the signal strength out there {how well does Edge work)? Can I rely on Google Maps? I'll be driving from Albuquerque to Santa Fe and on some back roads between Santa Fe and Cerrillos. Thanks.

Santa Fe has variable coverage. Near the Plaza it works well, but some parts of the city are covered by t-mobile, who is a roaming partner. It won't cost you anything to use t-mobile, however.
North of Santa Fe as you near Taos AT&T has no coverage; instead there is spotty coverage from other roaming partners.
If you go to the AT&T site they have detailed coverage maps that have been accurate in my experience.

  • Will this phone work in sweden if i buy it in London for example?

Hey, I have been a fan and has been after this product since the rumours spread!
ANd now its out in different stores i saw, US, UK, Canada etc.
so my questio nis, will this work in Sweden if I buy it in for example London?

Unfortunatley it will not work anywhere outside of AT&T and its roaming partners. You must have an account with AT&T and the corresponding multiyear contract. The problem is that in the US and Canada and many other countries (though not all) the network providers are really in the business of selling phones. They get exclusive distribution contracts with the phone suppliers then they modify (break) the phone so that it will only work on thier network. On top of this they will only offer locked in multiyear contracts to get access. So althought some governements are forcing cell phone companies to faciliate number transfer if you switch, they have done nothing about the restrcitive network access policies which are a much bigger problem.
Imagine if your ISP forced you to buy a computer from them, made you sign up to a multiyear contract, then disabled the computer from working with any other ISP. That is essentially what they are doing.
OK in some cases the multiyear contracts do cross subsidise the phone cost, but at $600 I don't see allot of subsidisation going on here. What I see is colusion and predatory behavior.
I'm disgusted that apple is helping to perpetuate this model. I should be able to buy whatever phone I want, from wherever I want and connect to whatever compatible network I want.

  • International Data for iPad 2

I want to buy an iPad 2 with 3G on the Verizon network.  However, I will be using it internationally for some parts of the year. I need to know if I will be able to get an international plan for the iPad, and how this works with it being a pre-paid device. I know that the iPad works on the CDMA network, and this will limit me when it comes to international partners that the iPad will  work on. I've tried to find international coverage maps showing where Verizon has partners, but have had no luck. I'll be using the device in Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada, as well as France. Where can I find more information about what the plans cost, how I sign up for one, and where the device will work ? I really need UMTS speeds when traveling as well, as this will be my primary internet connection.
Thank you for your time, and all help is appreciated !

    Hi rct123,
I appreciate you interest in our International Services.  You are correct the iPad 2 operates on CDMA technology.  The iPad2 will work in  Canada because it's a CDMA country.  However, France in A GSM country and the iPad will not work with our roaming partners. I have included a link which details the Canada Global Data Plan.  Please let me know if you have any additional questions.  You can PM me your number if you would like to add to the Global Plan.
