"BT Parental Controls Light" Suddenly Active

What the hell is this, and why is my internet suddenly being filtered without my consent?

BT are implementing this. If you want to remove it, you need to login to MyBT and actually delete Parental Controls. Only the account holder can do this.
There are some useful help pages here, for BT Broadband customers only, on my personal website.

  • Parental controls suddenly activated - without us ...

    Hi there,
BT parental controls have suddenly been activated without us asking for it. I noticed it first when trying to access Facebook. I then found out my own website is being blocked (despite no suspicious content!) and as a result also my e-mail. That's a massive problem as I work from home and need my e-mail. I phoned BT last night (Sunday) the call centre told me we'd get a call back today. We didn't. I phoned again tonight and the call centre assured me I'd get a call back tomorrow. Really?
I'm loosing money by not being able to access my e-mail. How do I stop this?
When logging into "My BT" the extra's says: "Parental Controls is being activated on your account and will be available in the next 24 hours. Please log in again later to manage your account."
It's been saying that for at least 48 hours. I cannot change the settings.
Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you in advance.

  • Can't add web site to kids acount with Parental Controls activated

I installed the update to Safari 4.0. I activated parental control in the administrator account. No matter what I do, I cannot add web sites to bookmarks on kids account. This is what I have tried:
    1. Logged into kids account. Opened safari. Entered URL. Clicked on add site to bookmarks. Entered administrator account name and password and pressed enter. Result - Site does not get added.
    2. Opened Safari preferences in kids account. Went to security tab. Tried to uncheck 'parental controls'. Result - Box will not uncheck.
    3. Closed Safari. Deleted Safari preferences file from Library/Preferences. Reopened Safari. Result - Still cannot add sites.
I suspect the problem is somehow related to permissions, but haven't been able to figure it out. Would appreciate some help.
    Thanks

Exact same here, though I haven't tried deleting preferences file. Sounds like that wouldn't work, though

  • Can't add bookmarks with Parental Controls activated?

  • Is there parental controls you can place on this router to not allow activity on certain websites and times?  I know that the Netgear router does this.er

Is it possible to restrict what sites(FB etc.)are accessed through this router and times certain devices can be allowed wifi access?

Not directly on the router but you can setup parental controls through external/3rd party services.  For example OpenDNS allows you to setup parental controls which are managed from their site and a separate account.  Once you have OpenDNS configured you can tell your 4G LTE router and personal devices to use it as their main DNS service.

  • Synchronisation address book with Yahoo  as Parental control is activated

I can't help my son, with parental control, to synchronize his address book with his Yahoo account.
After watching the history into parental control settings, i saw that it tries to go here:
    ssl-us.yimg.vip.ac4.yahoo.net
I tried to go to this site with my admin account and the answer is:
ssl-us.yimg.vip.ac4.yahoo.net utilise un certificat de sécurité invalide.
Le certificat n'est valide que pour sec.yimg.com.
Could you help us to fix this problem,
    What should I do ?
Is this really an invalide site ?
    Thank you

I just synced my new iPhone (iOS 5.0.1) with the Address Book on my Mac which runs 10.5.8 and iTunes 10.5.2. I launched iTunes and then I connected the iPhone to the Mac. It appeared on the DEVICES list in the left column in iTunes. I selected it and then the Summary screen appeared in the right part of the iTunes window.
In the Backup section of the Summary you can choose whether to 'Back up to iCloud' or 'Back up to this computer'. Even if you have 'Back up to iCloud' selected, there is a 'Sync' button in the bottom right hand corner of the iTUnes window where you can manually initiate a sync with the Mac.
    Hope this helps,
    Dave

  • Can't activate Parental Controls

    Hi.
Every time I try to activate Parental Controls is fails.
From "My Extras", I select the "Get stared" from the BT Parental Controls item, which takes me the a BT Parental Controls page. From that page, I can click on "Continue to select a filter level", and then I'm offered a choice of three filter levels. Selecting the level of filtering I want (light), and then clicking "Activate now", I see a spinning progress meter on the PT Paterntal Controls activation page, shortly followed by a failure noitice "Sorry, we haven't been able to activate your BT Parental Controls. Please try again". Trying again repeats the spinning progress meter, but always fails. After 4 or 5 attempts, I'm booted back to My BT page.
I've tried this procedure more than a dozen times,  and have also tried ringing the Parental Control tech support, but that call took over an hour to establish - and then dropped two minutes after getting through to some one :-(
Is there a moderator available who can help resolve this. I won't allow my kids on the interet without getting this sorted - and you can well imagine how popular thats going to make me!

  • Parental Controls CPU 100%

Under Activity Monitor Parentalcontrols is running at between 30-97% CPU- whatever will bring the total to 100%. this has been ongoing for several days now and the computer will not fully go to sleep- screen goes dark, but no flashing light, but I can force it to sleep. When I try to change parental controls settings locally- System preferences crashes and has to be force quit, but I can change settings from a different networked computer. Any ideas?

I have been testing different scenarios and have been able to keep this from occurring under 10.5.2. Let me start by saying that I have had these issues happen on my Mac Mini.
Everytime I have enabled "Use Simple Finder" AND "Only allow selected applications" TOGETHER has resulted in the parentalcontrols process to run away. Everytime I have disabled these two settings and kept all the other Parental Control settings as I had it before, the parentalcontrols process has NOT consumed all the CPU cycles.
Give this a try and see if this helps. What helps is to have the Activity monitor open while doing this. Disable all Parental Controls first, Force Quite the parentalconcrols process, then re-enable the Parental Control on the accounts you need, keeping away from setting both "Use Simple Finder" and "Only allow selected applications" together.
Also I read somewhere that disabling fast user switching would help. I have kept my fast user switching turned ON.
    Hope this helps.

  • I am trying to reset my 4th generation ipod touch via itunes (as I cannot remember parental controls code). In itunes it does a download but then says the software was corrupted during download. Itunes is up to date. Operating system is vista. Any ideas?

I have given my 4th generation ipod touch to my husband and he wants to download some in app purchases, so I am trying to reset it via itunes. I dont remember setting parental controls but I must have at some point, maybe when I lent it to the kids. But I cannot remember the password and nothing I have tried works. So I have backed the ipod up and am trying to reset it but after speding 10 minutes doing a download I get a message that says:
"The softwaar for the iPod was corrupted during download. Disconnect and reconnect, then try again. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later"
I have tried many times. All the settings are correct, and the network seems to be working fine in all respects.
    Any advice very much appreciated.
    Thank you
UPDATE - decided to try one more time after trying for hours and it has worked! I now suspect it may have been because my son was playing an online game. Though we have plenty of bandwidth. But in case, I guess it could be a bandwidth problem.

A Complete Guide to Restore or Recover Your iDevice (or if you forgot your passcode)
iTunes 10 for Mac- Update and restore software on iPod, iPhone, or iPad
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
    iOS- Understanding passcodes
If you have forgotten your Restrictions code, then follow the instructions
below but DO NOT restore any previous backup. If you do then you will
simply be restoring the old Restrictions code you have forgotten. This
same warning applies if you need to restore a clean system.
If you need to restore your device or if you cannot remember the passcode, then you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and re-sync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.
Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
Before restoring your iOS device, Apple recommends that you either sync with iTunes to transfer any purchases you have made, or back up new data (data acquired after your last sync). If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
Follow these steps to restore your device:
         1. Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes before attempting to
             update.
         2. Connect your device to your computer.
         3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
         4. Select the Summary tab.
         5. Select the Restore option.
         6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up
option (see in the image below). If you have just backed up the device, it is not
             necessary to create another.
         7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up,
you should not have to worry about restoring your iOS device).
         8. When the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple
             logo while starting up:
After a restore, the iOS device displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. For updating
to iOS 5 or later, follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant. For earlier versions of
iOS, keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or
              you see "iPhone is activated."
         9. The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup.
If you can not restore your device then you will need to go to recovery mode.
Placing your device into recovery mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
         1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the other end
of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
         2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the
red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake
and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake
              and Home buttons.
         3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device.
The device should turn on. Note: If you see the screen pictured below, let the device
charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some charge, and then
             start with step 2 again.
         4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button.
         5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
         6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
    Additional Information:
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.

  • Parental Controls bug in Mountain Lion 10.8.2

For years I've used Parental Controls, not to restrict my daughter's web content, but to limit her time on the computer.  But tonight I upgraded Mountain Lion from 10.8.1 to 10.8.2 and something broke.
Suddenly every secure web page she tries to access (to include google, gmail, amazon, etc.) fails.  It says "Parental controls restricts access to secure websites".
A little hunting around turned up the following Apple Knowledge Base article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2900 that says "https note: For websites that use SSL encryption (the URL will usually begin with https), the Internet content filter is unable to examine the encrypted content of the page. For this reason, encrypted websites must be explicitly allowed using the Always Allow list. Encrypted websites that are not on the Always Allow list will be blocked by the automatic Internet content filter."
I understand that logic however that should NOT apply to me since I'm not trying to automatically restrict her adult web content or create allowed/blocked site lists, etc.  She has *unrestricted* web site access, so the Internet content filter shouldn't even be in play here.
Just to get this up and running, I did type the Admin account and password in at the prompt to let her gain access to the web pages.  However that did not work.  Even though it said it would now allow access - it did not.
I also tried going into Parental Controls, turning ON web site filtering, going into Custom, and adding in approved secure web sites (google, etc.)  Even *that* did not work.
Everything was great until 10.8.2 came along but now her account is for all intents and purposes unusable.
    Help?  And thanks.

Same problem here. Apple seems to be neglecting the parental controls. First, they broke X11: http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/ticket/439. 10.8.1 didn't address that problem. Not only does 10.8.2 not address the X11 bug, it actually breaks secure web browsing!
Just to add a little more information, secure browsing on Safari seems to work OK for me once authorized. However, neither Firefox nor Chrome work with any secure site even after they have been authorized. Unfortunately, my daughter's school site is secure and it doesn't work on Safari so her Mac is useless for school now.
Looks like I'll have to restore using Time Machine and not update again until I know this has been addressed.
    Apple, I'm not impressed.

  • Bridge's parent application is not active

    Hi,
I've suddenly come across a problem with Adobe Bridge where it isn't allowing me to open .CR2 files into Camera Raw. When I right click on an image in Bridge, an error message pops up:
"Bridge's parent application is not active. Bridge requires that a qualifying product has been launched at least once to enable this feature."
Originally, I opened Photoshop CS6, then File > Browse in Bridge. I've have opened ACR hundreds of times on this computer so I don't understand why it wants me to open it to be able to use it. I've opened a RAW file from Windows explorer, but when going back to Bridge, the same error occurs.
Does anyone know what the problem is here and how to fix it?
    Running Windows 7, Photoshop CS6 64-bit, ACR 7.1, Bridge CS6 64-bit.
    Thank you!

Then, in Bridge, I get the dreaded "Camera Raw blah blah blah" message when trying to open files in ACR by pressing 'cmd-R' or going to File > Open in Camera Raw.
This seems related to an old thread and I'm using email to read and write to the forum. Can you clarify a bit more about the blahblah?
You stated that it happened suddenly this morning and also mention a subscription trouble with the creative cloud. Did you use Bridge after the trouble was solved and it worked but stopped this morning or was it directly after you reinstalled everything?
Did you already try the obvious restart Bridge holding down option key and choose reset preferences? The Clean tool is not deleting everything Adobe has installed before.
And double check on the updates, the application manager sometimes has a mind of its own, especially when having multiple language versions installed, it only updates the language version set in preferences.
And check PS the About Menu
for about PS it should say 13.1.2 x64
and about plug in / camera raw it should say 7.3.0.71.
And in Bridge About Bridge it should say 5.0.2.4
Can you confirm this and can you also report what other applications you have installed from the creative cloud.
And since I changed to OSX 10.8 I can't check myself, is 10.7.5 the latest update?

  • Os X crashes when uploading images - parental controls?

    hey world
we've had this issue for a while now where our imac crashes when my daughter attempts to upload an image to her tumblr page.
this isn't just a browser crash - its one of those doozys where the whole screen goes grey and we get the message asking us to shut the computer down by holding the power button etc etc.
we tried resetting the browser (firefox initially), trashed the prefs and disabled all addons. still it crashes on upload. we tried chrome, still it crashes.
the tricky thing is, when we repeated the steps under my login (admin), it all works fine.
after much testing we have narrowed this down to the fact that my daughters account has parental controls active.
the controls are set to limit login times, and for a maximum of 1 hour on school nights. there are no limitations to the system or firewalls, just the time limits.
when I deactivate parental controls she can post to tumblr just fine. as soon as I switch the controls back on, bam! it crashes.
there is a workaround for this - we discovered that safari works just fine with parental controls in place.
but we'd really rather use firefox. and surely we should be able to..?
i thought I'd post our problem to see if anyone else has experienced this when using the parental controls settings. I'm wondering if upgrading to lion will resolve this problem - so if anyone has done this and can advise if it will work, please let me know.
    our system is as follows:
2.16ghz intel core 2 duo white imac
    2gb 667 mhz ddr2 SDRAM
    OS X 10.5.8
    thank you!

Hmmm, I can't test as I have no tubler account, but some differences between Firefox & Safari is that Safari uses Sys Prefs fpr things like Proxies & DNS, where FF can use it's own.

  • BT Parental Controls - unable to process your requ...

Last night (Sunday 7 December) I activated the BT Parental Controls and blocked a few websites just to test it out.
With three boys I was curious to see what level of protection BT Parental Controls offered.
However this evening when I log in to My BT and click on the "Manage" button for BT Parental Controls all I get is this error message:
We are unable to process your request due to technical error.
What needs to be done to allow me to access these settings please?
I didn't realise that activating BT Parental Controls would block the use of Google Public DNS which I'm using for a number of devices so I would now like to disable the BT Parental Controls but obviously am unable to.
    Many thanks
    Gareth

I have been experiencing the same problems for nearly a fortnight and have had numerous conversations with the so called tecnical support who tell me it will be fixed soon!!.I would like to know when but so far no luck. There is obviously a fault or lack of interest on BT's part. They are supposed to be calling me again tomorrow, so will update if they do.

  • Parental Controls - Internet Access Stopped!

My wife has a white MacBook running Leopard 10.5.8.  It has worked fine for two years.  Nothing was changed.  She could not change anythign due to being logged into a managed account.
It could always access the internet over our home (or any available) WiFi perfectly.  All of a sudden, yesterday afternoon, her managed account with "Parental Controls" enabled cannot access any internet.  Safari mentions that it cannot access the server.  When checking the network setting all seems fine, it can access the WiFi router.
The administrator account can access the internet over WiFi just fine.
I created another account called Test.  In standard mode it can access the internet over WiFi just fine, but when i turn on "Parental Controls" Safari, or any other internet related program cannot access the internet.  This includes the software update in the Finder.
What's going on?  i have found similar issues on the Apple Support Communities going back unanswered to 2007!

    Beach Dude,
I have the same problem, and have had on virtually every operating system since Parental Controls was introduced.
I have multiple kids with individual accounts. THe perplexing thing is that if I enable parental controls on my daughter's account,  it works fine. I can set time limits, etc... and it works! But if I so much as turn on parental controls in my youngest son's account, every web browser is unable to connect to the internet at all from his account.
BUGGY software. And apple knows it is buggy, but it isn't core system stuff so they ignore the problem.  I even tried setting up a new account for him and moving his old files over and resetting permissions. Still the same problem.
I've searched high and low for a solution and found none. I have found a limited number of users with the same complaint...and absolute silence from apple....
There is nothing on these boards that has worked, and I've tried several different solutions.  Most responses are the useless kind, "change the setting in parental controls" kind of sophomoric advice from people who just assume what the problem is instead of reading our description of it.
Anyway, I haven't found a good alternate software solution for limiting the time and hours for children's accounts; but I did find an excellent tool for managing internet content access. It is called opendns and it is free and it works!  Do a google search for "opennds" if your primary concern is managing access to web content.  If you come up with a good solution for fixing parental controls so that it doesn't just cut off web access, please let me know here - or if you find an alternate software solution that allows an administrator to set time limits for standard accounts, I would like to know that too.
    Regards
