BT Parental controls - on when they're off!

I am trying to access a site to install a VPN on my PC. I keep getting an error message saying the site has been blocked by parental controls, but ive turned them off! Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong, please? tks in advance

There seem to be some quite ordinary sites that are blocked even when Parental Controls are off.
I had to sign on to MyBT and remove Parental Controls as there didn't seem to be any other wat to get full access.

I set up a user account for my child. I am able to access the internet through firefox. I then set up parental controls and can NOT access the internet anymore. I turn off parental controls for that user account. I still can not access the internet from that account.

Parental controls is a part of the Windows operating system and not Firefox. You can get help here: http://support.microsoft.com/ask-community/windows/

  • Not showing user online, yet shows me when they logged off

When I hover over one of the screen names in my "offline" list, it shows me how long ago they logged off, yet I didn't see them online. I'm wondering if this means they blocked me, or if they were just logged on as invisible. It just seems odd that it would show me how long ago they logged off if I was blocked. Someone please ease my paranoia.

    Hi,
Off Line Buddies (greyed out) ones show me nothing other than Scree Name if I have a real name in Leopard and Snow Leopard. (and a larger Buddy Pic)
Away Buddies do show on some if they have gone Idle (No Keyboard/mouse input to computer) as well as Away.
(Idle but Available Buddies go Amber in iChat)
I tried this for a Significant number of Offline Buddies just in case one was Invisible and showed differently, but Nada.

I allowed PC Update Support to take over my computer (long story) When they were done I checked them out and discovered they were most likely scammers. I ran my antivirus program and changed passwords. Should I be concerned that they may have installed malware?

If you are sure they were scammers the only way to be 100% sure they left nothing behind is to wipe your system disk, do a clean install and restore from a backup you are sure was made before the scammers got onto you system.
There is no other way to be sure that thye did not leave somehting behind. In addition if you have used any credit card numbers while on the system, back account (or any other) passwords, tax returns, etc. You need to be alert fo IIdentity Theft | Consumer Information. It may be a good idea to place a fraud alert with one of the credit reporting agencies (the link above will detail what to do)
And of course change the passwords right away.
    good luck

  • How do I reset iOS 8 Restrictions (Parental Controls) Passcode When I have the Original Passcode?

Most of the posts I find apply to those who've forgotten their passcode. Not the case here. Is there a way to reset the restrictions/parental controls passcode to something new?

Thanks all. Yes, the actual solution was quite simple. I can't believe Google can't find ANYTHING on it. And so, I made a YouTube vid showing how easy it is. Glad I didn't wipe everything and start over   And yes, all I could find were people who'd forgotten the passcode.

  • Does Firefox change the installation date in control panel when they upgrade?

I installed Mozilla Firefox in early September. 6 weeks later I noticed the installation date for Firefox in control panel had changed from September to October (appeared as if it had been uninstalled and reinstalled). I uninstalled it, and reinstalled it, and I noted the date of installation, October 18. I kept an eye on it. November 5, I checked the control panel, I noted the installation date had changed again, to November 1. Now my dates may be off a day, but is it normal for Firefox to change the installation date when upgrading, and even more disturbing, is it possible to do it without the user knowing it's being done? And remotely?

Each time you update any program, you install it. The installation date in Control Panel will therefore update accordingly. This happens when the installer runs on your system: there's no remote interference involved.
By default, Firefox updates automatically. The setting is found under Options - Advanced - Update. If you click the Show Update History button there, you'll no doubt find Firefox was updated on November 1st.

  • How do I turn all parental controls off PERMANANTLY?! urgent PLEASE help

I was playing around on the computer when i stumbled upon "parental controls." I clicked on the control for iChat, and it acted like a parental control. but when i unclicked the control because i wanted to go back to iChat, all my buddies were back, but NONE of them were online, which is impossible because not even the robots were online, or some of my friends who are always on at this time. How do I fix it to get my buddies back?! *PLEASEEEEEEEEEEE HELP!!!!!!!!*

    Hi,
Only an Admin Account can turns Off Parental Controls.
Go to System Preferences > Parental Controls.
Set the controls Back to the basic defaults and then set Parental Controls to be Deselected.
Then go to System Preferences > Accounts and then click the Padlock if required.
    Enter the Admin Password.
Now click on the User Account that you are Logged on to the computer with. (Or the one that had Parental Controls set).
Make sure Parental Controls is Off here as well.
This should make the Buddy list respond properly.
    NOTES
IF you have a Test Mac User Account and use the Same Screen Name in iChat in both User Accounts the Test account Parental Controls will flag your Account/Screen Name at AIM and will be effected in the normal User Account buddy List.
In iChat 3 and 4 Parental Control for iChat disable Bonjour Chatting and Jabber/GoogleTalk Buddy Lists

  • Parental Controls in Safari 10.5.2 Stops Itune's Store Access

Well I have spent several hours trying to correct a problem that seems to have started when I started to use the built in Parental Controls of Mac OS 10.5.2 on my son's new MacBook! All other software and internet access worked, yet his Itunes could not connect to the Itunes store. I would get error mesages -50 and -4. Interestingly enough, if you clicked on an artist or album in his library, you could get in "the back door" as it would take you to that artists page within the Itunes Store. I left parental controls within Itunes were turned off.
I contacted Apple Support and together we deleted preferences, Itunes itself and reinstalled (with restarts) to no avail. We used the disk utilities and repaired etc, yet ultimately the problem remained and he directed me here to the forums after giving up.
Then I turned off Parental Controls within Safari and restarted (it might work without the restart yet I did so just in case), PRESTO!! Itunes opens to the Itunes Store.
This would imply to me that there is a bug in the Mac OS Parental Controls. Has anyone else had this problem and has Apple announced when a fix date is coming?
I bought my son's MacBook BECAUSE of the Parental Controls built in, yet Itunes sort of goes hand in hand with kids so to me, this is a big problem....

I also posted this elsewhere in Discussions, but if this helps some other folks out, then the duplication is worth it!
    ==============
I also spent about 2 hours with Apple Tech Support today on this issue. The only workaround I could find was to DISABLE parental controls.
In the iTunes/Store thread in Discussions, there was a link to give Apple feedback on this issue. Here is the link to the feedback page; to get this fixed, I think Apple has to really hear from us. Maybe this is a place to give that kind of feedback:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Also, having parental controls enables also caused access problems for my child at Webkinz and a school-controlled email account. A thread elsewhere in Discussions listed the IP addresses for Webkinz (also on Webkinz help page here:
    http://www.webkinz.com/faq/c.html#18
After going through the thread, here are all the IPs (for your convenience):

    66.48.69.102
    66.48.69.104

    66.48.83.163
    66.48.83.164
    66.48.83.165
    also, add 106, 116, and 117.
    66.48.69.118
    66.48.69.124
    66.48.83.211
I'm glad to hear you heard they are working on it; today's call told me they were just "monitoring" the issue.

If you are looking for a new take on Internet Parental Controls that addresses how much time your kids can spend on-line on any device, check out this new HIPOM (https://www.myHIPOM.com) offering.
They have a very interesting free service that lets parents see all of the internet-enabled devices in your house and turn them on or off like a light switch - all from a simple web page.  No software to download or configure and it works for any internet-enabled device.  I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks now and it really works.  I use it to kick my daughter off Facebook after 8:30pm every night with a push of a button!
Rumor has it they are going into "beta test" with a 'Web Safeguards' feature as well that will allow parents to block content while the kids are online.  It’s a nice one-two punch for internet parental controls – an internet timer control deciding when they can go on-line and a web filtering control deciding what they can see while on line.

  • DVD parental controls started on their own

Some time ago -- maybe after I installed Lion, and continuing now with Mountain Lion -- I started seeing this message whenever I insert a DVD movie into my MacBook Pro:
Allow the media "(name)" to play?
Parental Control is on. To play this media, you will be asked to enter an administrator name and password.
    [Always Allow] [Cancel] [Play Once]
This happens with every DVD, either commercial discs rented from Netflix or purchased, or discs of my own material created in iDVD.
I'm the only user of this computer, so I have no need for, and have never configured, Parental Controls. When I go to the Parental Controls control panel, there doesn't seem to be any settings to turn off. The only user listed there is Guest User (see screen shot). I'm logged in as an administrator.
I don't see any relevant settings in DVD Player, or in the CDs & DVDs control panel. Can anyone guess why this functionality started, and more importantly how I can turn it off?

    2) is there a preferences file somewhere that I can save and then just upload from time to time?
    Thanks,

I suspect your students are smarter than you think they are
Be sure nobody knows the admin password. Change it to be sure and make sure nobody is looking.
Be sure nobody has a Leopard DVD handy.
Be sure all users are non-admin types.
Check all 3rd party apps installed on the machines.
You can also check the console logs on the machines to see how and when the change occurred.

  • Parental Controls Not Consistently Working (Linksyssmartwifi) on EA6500

    Hello,
I have a Linksys EA6500 with the lastest firmware (1.1.28.147876). I have been having lots of problems getting the parental controls to work properly on this router. I use the Linksys Smart Wifi website as well as directly access the control panel through the router (192.168.1.1).
My kids like to spend too much time on youtube, so i setup the parental controls so that their devices are blocked from youtube at all times. However sometimes I come home and find that they are able to access youtube without any problems. When logging into Linksyssmartwifi.com I see that the parental controls are "off". For some reason the parental controls sometimes turn themselves "off". I sometimes notice this when I have the SmartWifi app also running on my iPhone. Does the Smartwifi system automatically sync? Do I need to logout of the app on my phone before the parental blocking takes effect? Sometimes I notice that my kids laptop does not show up on "Device List" on the smartwifi menu, even though it is clearly connected to the same network via Wifi.
This is driving me nuts. The Smartwifi software is buggy and sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't. The firmware is up to date, but i've been having problems with this router ever since I bought it (about 6 months ago). It keeps inconsistently applying the parental controls.
The Linksyssmartwifi feature and being able to apply parental controls from anywhere in the world seems to be a great idea. But the experience that I've had so far has been incredibly inconsistent. Sometimes the Parental controls work, sometimes they don't. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

If that's the case, it has a big possibility that your son's computer is using a Static IP Address. I forgot to include the steps on how to set Static IP Address on the computer in my previous post. But here it is: http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=aa7f7eb572b6404daf6413c2a643b04a_KBXXX_EN_v1.xml&p...
If your son's computer is using a Static IP Address, you will be able to see it on the Device List even if it is on the router's network.
For Static IP assignment, why not just use the Linksys router's DHCP reservation option to associate the device MAC address with a Static IP? That's what I do to get Static IPs for some of my my devices on my Linksys EA4500 router.
The above linked article talks about changing the TCP/IP settings in the OS to get a Static IP.
Also, I use the EA4500's (Cloud firmware) Parental Controls to prevent access from certain devices at certain times of the day. That mechanism has never flaked out on me, and has never turned itself OFF unless I turn it OFF.

  • Parental controls a nuisance since Yosemite

Since the change to Yosemite Parental Controls "misbehaves":
    - when granting extra time the extra time is "lost" whenever the user logs out or even goes to sleep mode. Until 10.9 that wasn't the case and extra time was kept for the remainder of the day.
    - whenever any other change is performed in parental controls (e.g. granting access to a new website), extra time is lost as well and the (parentally controlled) user is logged out.
    - stupid but not a real problem: the audio warning that time is about to expire is still English-only but the English text is now read with German pronounciation ("parental controls log out in xxx minutes").
Any idea if this can be rectified by the user or is a bug thats need fixing. (I do hope it's not a feature).

    Hi,
I have experienced the same problems, and others.
For example, the website blocker "Allow access to only these websites" is not working as expected. All allowed websites work ok (as expected). However, several websites not on the "allowed" list are accessible but some random ones are not. There does not seem to be a pattern.
Under yosemite I cannot find any way of resetting the parental controls or getting them to work as expected. I have searched for a solution including deleting the files in /Library/Managed Preferences, turning off the controls and turning them back on again and rebooting. I wonder now if Yosemite stores the control files in the /Library/Managed Preferences directory at all any more. The files correctly disappear when you turn the controls off, but then when you turn them back on again the last known configuration is restored, so they really do not go away and supposedly are stored somewhere else. But where?
The App management controls do seem to work ok. However, unless the web blocking code is made to work then parental controls right now are useless (actually, worse than useless as they are misleading people into thinking sites are being blocked when they are not).
Parental Controls have often been buggy in Mac OSX and I am not sure why. I can imagine some parents/employers getting litigious.

  • How can i allow java in parental control

    Hello,
I want to allow my son to play to minecraft (wich works with java) . I'm adding minecraft to the list of application that he can access (using parental controls)
But when I launch minecraft it ask me to authorize the usage of the application. When I click on always authorize (Toujours autoriser in french) , it keeps asking me the same question. I'm entering the correct admin username and passowrd.
Whenever I click Authorize once, it ask me the admin username and password and then launches minecraft. so it works.
    Thank you
    Best regards
    Jean

    Thanks Liam.
I imagined that might be the case, but had to ask in case someone found a way.
I guess I could manually set up subdomains and point them to the individual web-app items. Lot of manual work though. The main purpose would be to give customers a nice tidy URL for them to share. 'myName.thatSite.com' is much better for sharing than 'thatSite.com/profile/myName', even if it ends up showing as 'myName.thatSite.com/profile/myName'
I thought having subdomain wildcards enabled might help -  javascript might be able to redirect to the relevant item - but apparently this is not posible with current BC systems.
Do you know if BC are planning to add any API functionality to the site domain management features
Or if they'd perhaps add subdomain wild-cards?
Seems unlikely, but I wonder if this might make something possible.
    Cheers,
    Adrian

  • Is there a way to disable a user's Parental Controls through ARD?

So, we have Users with AD accounts, and for some reason Parental Controls is ON, and the only thing it limits is Printer Administration. I don't need this on, there's actually no need for Parental Controls at all, they are all Users, not Admins..
So, is there a terminal command that turns all Parental Controls OFF for all accounts that have it?
And, can i 'push' that out through ARD?

Assuming that they are local and not handed down by AD, you can remove the managed client settings for a local user from the commandline like so:
    sudo dscl -mcxdelete /Local/Default/Users/username
    sudo rm -rf /Library/Managed\ Preferences/username

  • Parental Controls don't work correctly under Yosemite

I'm having some serious issues with Parental Controls under Yosemite, issues serious enough that Parental Controls prove to be worthless under Yosemite as currently implemented.
This is a clean install of Yosemite upgraded to current version 10.10.1.
    Symptoms:
Using the child's account with parental controls active, when the parental control blocks a website, a dialog comes up offering to allow the parent/admin to approve the site and add it to the exceptions list.  This is nice!  Unfortunately, approving the website DOES NOT add it to the exceptions list... ever.   We discovered this when launching Keynote, which kept trying to connect to an akamai.net server (probably an update check).  We would sign in with the admin account to clear the server, then it would pop up with the same dialog box again.  We did discover that I _can_ add the site via the Parental Controls prefpane, but kind of a pain.  Why have a dialog box pop up if it doesn't actually work.
Time limits don't seem to be obeyed at all in Yosemite, child played on his account for 2 hours despite being set to 1/2 hour a day.
Some apps just lock up on launch (I do NOT use any app controls).  I suspect (but can't demonstrate with certainty) that they are accessing blocked websites in the background.  Two of the hanging apps are Pages and Keynote (current versions), apps I would expect to behave properly.
For now, I have disabled parental controls, as they are worthless in this form and just make for a frustrating experience for all.  It has been disappointing that a feature that used to come in handy (mostly the time limits) has become completely worthless now.

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.
