BT primary account sending spam emails - how do I ...
Hi can someone help. A few weeks ago my old BT primary address started sending spam (I had accessed it only to delete the hundreds of spam emails - the reason why I switched to google by the way!). I changed all my passwords. Today my friends and family have informed me that they have started to receive them again but I haven't been on my PC for a week or accessed this account.
Please can someone to tell me how to get rid of this email address altogether, do I even need one as my login and contact email address is now the google one? Can the email address be prevented from sending any mail.
Thanks Sara

Hi Sara. Welcome to the forums.
Go back into the primary email account and change the password again - make it something obscure, but remember it. You can make up an easy one by say taking the first character of the first dozen words in chapter one of the nearest book. Keep that book somewhere close, and don't say what the book is on facebook or other social networks or to your friends on text etc!
Remove all the contacts from the mail system, that way any spammer/hacker who happens to get into your account can't email anyone.
Do you know if your contacts get the same email at the same time ? Have you responded to any emails that seem to be BTinternet asking for username, email address, password etc ? If you get any of these, just delete them.
You need a primary email address, as that comes with the service. I believe a sub account (if you have any) can be promoted to be a primary email address, or indeed have a new primary altogether. You need to contact the Mods to find out (click on one of their names for the contact info).
The email address itself isn't sending mail, it is being done by someone or something. If your friends/relatives still have an email pretending to come from you, then the email headers will show where it has come from specifically. However these details need to be checked. It's a bit complex to get the headers, so perhaps we can leave that for now - though if you wish I can give the information on how to get them, and perhaps sent to me to check.

If you don't know your ID, you can try to find it as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5625. Then you can reset the password as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2617. Of course, you can only do this if it's your ID.

Send apple email - how do I set the - send FROM account?
found this nice script to auto create and send apple email...
Q: how do I set the : send from account?
tell application "Mail"
set theMessage to make new outgoing message with properties {visible:true, subject:"My Subject", content:"My Body"}
tell theMessage
make new to recipient at end of to recipients with properties {name:"test", address:"[email protected]"}
end tell
send theMessage
end tell
nice info here:
http://www.mactech.com/articles/mactech/Vol.21/21.09/ScriptingMail/index.htmlI've been using the following which may be more complicated than necessary but it does work:
-- SCRIPT SEGMENT --
tell application "Mail"
activate
set listOfSenders to {}
set everyAccount to every account
repeat with eachAccount in everyAccount
set everyEmailAddress to email addresses of eachAccount
if (everyEmailAddress is not equal to missing value) then
repeat with eachEmailAddress in everyEmailAddress
set listOfSenders to listOfSenders & {(full name of eachAccount & " <"Mail"
set newMessage to make new outgoing message with properties {subject:theSubject, content:theBody & return & return}
tell newMessage
set visible to true
set sender to theSender
make new to recipient at end of to recipients with properties {name:theName, address:theAddress}
set font to "Lucinda Sans"
set size to 14
end tell
activate
--send newMessage
end tell
-- END SCRIPT SEGMENT --
I have commented the actual "send message" line so that I can read the message before clicking the send button as I often will add a comment.

Help! My home mac is sending spam emails!
Hello,
I am a long time mac user, and have never encountered this problem before. In fact I've only heard about this on windows:
My home mac is sending out spam via my primary email address.
I discovered on Friday morning that sometime on Thursday afternoon a bunch of spam emails were sent out to people present in my addressbook while I was on my home Mac (there are other unfamiliar address too, but many from my addressbook). I checked my home directory for viruses using Norton Antivirus and found a virus: Trojan.ByteVerify and some related files. I deleted them, and rechecked the directory, and found nothing more, so I thought that was the end of it.
However I checked this afternoon and found two more batches of spam emails had been sent, yesterday early afternoon and again today late afternoon. Norton continues to find nothing in my home directory, nor does Little Snitch report any unsolicited activity.
I assume my Mac is to blame, as the emails have only gone out when I am active on the computer and connected to the internet.
I have the firewall on, and Norton checks all downloads, but beyond that I'm not sure what else I can do. I am right now working from an 'emergency' drive which I hope has not been affected.
I am prepared to erase my primary startup drive and rebuild it, IF that will solve the problem, but I am looking for some guidance. None of my tools seems to be reporting anything wrong, and yet something definitely is! I thought Mac OS X was immune to this sort of thing, but it appears not.
Any help would be appreciated as to what I can look for or do (aside from giving up and rebuilding the startup drive).
Thank you,
RobHi folks,
An update 10 days after the problem first appeared...
It seems clear that:
- someone is able to mimic my old email address and send spam to people, making it look like it is coming from my address. At least some of these spam emails are showing up in my "Sent" messages folder in the compromised email account.
- Somehow, the spammer has obtained my address book, which is being used (in part) as a source of addresses for spam recipients. I know this because among some unknown spam destinations are scattered addresses I have in my address book from both work and personal life. I have no idea how this could have happened. I have not emailed my address book anywhere. I have in the last month or so used dropbox to start synchronizing address book between home and work macs (so the master resides on dropbox), Those are the only places my address book resides. I see no sign that my dropbox account is compromised, but I might abandon cloud computing for now after this!
- Spam (pretending to be me as a source) is only being sent out when I am actually using my home macintosh computer. I am certain of this now, after 10 days of viewing the pattern. The first spam was Thursday June 24, when I was on the Mac, and there have since been about 6 or so spam 'waves'. None on the 25th, but on the 26th, 27th, 29th, and 30th. I did not turn on my home Mac on the 25th, 28th, nor between July 1-5, and there has been no spam on those days. Is it possible for someone to monitor my IP address and send spam out when the monitor sees me communicating with the outside world?
What I've done:
- I created a new mac OS system from scratch on my home computer, containing no files with modified date June 24 or later. That new system is using Norton Antivirus for Mac, firewall on in stealth mode (allowing only email, web, and normal system operation), Little Snitch (I've enabled very few operations to be allowed automatically), and using a Mac OS X account that does not have administrative access.
- I have tried to change the settings of the AOL free account (at least change the password), but am unable to do so. When I log into my account on the web, click settings and change password, it asks me my security question, then I get a French page (not my choice) showing some of my account settings, with nothing to click that would allow me to change settings. There also seems to be no way to delete or cancel an aol free email address account; the best advice I've seen is that it will be deactivated after 90 days of inactivity, which in this case won't happen if spam is being sent from that address and appearing in the Sent folder. I will continue to investigate ways to do this; I might end up having to write a snail mail letter to AOL Canada asking them to delete the compromised account.
- I have pretty well abandoned the compromised email account, migrating most of my email subscriptions to a new email address and informing who I can that the old email is a spam source. Is there any way to report the email address as spam centrally?
- Finally, I am going to contact my ISP today and see what they can do; maybe I can get a different IP address at home...
If anyone has further suggestions I would appreciate it. What a nightmare!
Thank you,
Rob -
It wont print spam emails, how do i change that.
my emails I send to eprints won't print it says,
(Looked like spam or contained a virus)
how can I change this. What email service are you using?
Are you using a web based email service (such as yahoo or gmail), Microsoft Outlook, or an email app from your mobile phone? If so, which one are you using.
Did you happen to set up an allowed senders list with ePrint? If so, any emails that are not on that allowed senders list will automatically be rejected as spam.

I opened a spam email how do i know if it has caused a problem
I opened a spam email and before i could delete it it went. Also,
when i had a financial page open on the internet, it looked like asomeone was trying to read it with a magnifying glass??I would consider your SIN stolen. See this page: http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/sin/lost/lost.shtml . One thing mentioned is that you should have your credit record flagged as at risk for fraudulent activity - do that tomorrow.
Not knowing exactly what happened, I would bring up another web browser, and see if you get the same reaction on the bank web site. If you use Safari, you might choose one of these three (not listed in any particular order):
chrome: http://www.google.com/chrome
firefox: http://www.firefox.com
opera: http://www.opera.com
If you don't get the same large circle whipping around, then assume that your other browser is compromised, and don't use it. Any of the web browsers above can bring bookmarks over, but don't bring cookies or anything else over. If in doubt, don't bring anything from the previous web browser.
If you get the same odd behavior on the web site, please post back.
Also, go into system preferences, click security, then the firewall tab, and ensure the firewall is on. Then click advanced, and make sure that stealth mode is checked. -
My iMac has started sending emails to all those in my contacts list. It's the same email friends are getting but there is nothing in my sent box. Have I got a virus (don't want to mention that word!!) or something on my Mac and how can I get rid of it?
ThanksI had a similar issue with a Hotmail account, until I changed the password. Good luck.

Someone is using my email address and sending virus emails how can I stop this happening?
Someone has hijacked my address book and is sending virus infected mail using my email address to other people in my address book. How do I get rid of this hacker from my Mac, and how do I prevent this happening again.
Your mail account has almost certainly been hacked on the server, not on your computer, unless someone has had access to the latter.
Log in to the mail server's web interface and change the password. If you use the same password for any other accounts, change those passwords too, and make them all different. Internet passwords should be random strings of at least 10 characters. You most likely don't need to, and should not be able to, remember them. They should be saved in your keychain and backed up with the rest of your data.
One way to generate a secure password is the following. Triple-click anywhere the line below to select it:
openssl rand -base64 10 | cut -c-14 | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected line to the clipboard (command-C). Launch the Terminal application and paste into the window that opens (command-V). A string of 14 random characters will appear in a TextEdit window. Use that string, or a substring, as the password. To generate another random string, press the up-arrow key and then the return key with the Terminal window active. You can then quit Terminal.
If the compromised account is on Gmail, then changing the password may not be enough. Follow all of Google'sinstructions to secure it. -
I would like so send emails to multiple addresses yet I want each recipient to only see his or her address
This question isn't related to Mozilla Firefox. However, I can still answer your question. In the 'to' field, put your own e-mail address and put each recipient's address in the BCC field. This way the only address seen is your own.
Please try to post in the appropriate forum next time. (Thunderbird, Gmail, etc.) -
TS3899 How do I send a "spam" email as an attachment to iCloud using my iPad or iPhone
ICloud directs you to send spam email as an attachment in an email to [email protected] I have no problem doing that on my MacBook Pro but cannot find "message=>forward As Attachment" from the menu bar on my iPhone or iPad. Can anyone direct me?
That only forwards the email exactly as you see it in letter form. icloud wants it sent as an attachment to an email. Thanks for answering me.

When I send an email, it shows initals and not my name that is sending the email, how do I change this?
Hey samsept3,
Thanks for the question. I understand you wish to change the display name of your Mail account in OS X. This can be configured in Mail > Preferences > Accounts > [Account Name] > Full Name

i have been told that java is capable of sending an email. i have been trying to use perl for a complicated form and have come up frustreated, and i think it would be easier to use a java applet/ application to send the email. how do i set up the classes? and what do i need on the host machine? and quite simply, HOW do i do it? plz help a frustrated college student
Download JavaMail:
http://java.sun.com/products/javamail/
look at some of the samples you get in the ZIP file, they are nice
and small simple examples. Then Bob's your uncle.
Look at the readme also as you have to download something some another jar to get it working, but it's a piece of cake, you'll get it going in no time.

On our MacBook Pro running 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, using Apple's Mail 4.6 (1035), my wife's Mail account began experiencing two problems, one starting about 2 weeks ago, the other just recently noticed.
She uses IMAP to download her primary account from DirectNIC. This account syncs the Inbox with her iPad Air. She also POPS mail from a secondary account from WebHostingHub.
1. About 2 weeks ago, emails received by her primary account starting being automatically copied and redirected to her secondary account. Thus, when she uses the "Get Mail" button (or her mail is automatically downloaded), she ends up with two copies of every email in her Inbox, and the ones in her primary account are automatically marked as read.
She does not have any rules in Mail, nor does she have any email forwarders in her DirectNIC or POP settings. We can not figure out how this automatic forwarding started or how to turn it off. We have rebuilt the Inboxes for both her primary and secondary accounts.
2. Yesterday my wife noticed that her Inbox for her primary account is missing emails she had in there that were older than January 5, 2014. All older emails that had previously been in her Inbox are now gone, and we can not find where they went. We have not made any changes to her Inbox's behavior, and she was barely using even 1% of her quota on her primary email's IMAP server at DirectNIC.
Any clues about how to fix any of the above would be welcome.
CharlieI called my ISP and sorted out the problem. Something changed in the behavior of the POP account so that it started causing both of the problems I described in my original post. That POP account was using the same email server info as the primary account, and was removing emails after a week, as well as looping back emails sent to the primary account, creating the duplicates.
I deleted the POP account, which fixed both problems. She forwards emails sent to her secondary account to her primary account. I then used the directions at http://support.apple.com/kb/ta23485 so that she can send emails from the email address she is using as her secondary account.

Mac was hacked, sending spam
My mac was hacked and sending spams emails. OS X 10.9. Network Utilities port scan saying ports 110, 143,994,995 are open ( email services). lsof does not show those ports. netstat does not show those ports neither.
I did not install any email server on my Mac.
Tried couple anti virus, that did not help.
Thanks for any help. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data. The instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
sudo lsof +c0 -i4TCP | pbcopy
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Paste into a Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting. You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Confirm. You don't need to post the warning.
If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Log in as one and start over.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.
The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.
