BT SMTP Offline.....sometimes
I'm posting from UK and can't send email at present. I'm using Mail Version 7.3 (1878.6) on my Mac-book and running OSX 10.9.4 . My mail account is with BT. All of a sudden I can't send emails and my SMTP server list shows "BT SMTP Offline". I can send emails out through my BT Yahoo account on the internet. I've had this problem on and off for some months. It arrives and all of a sudden disappears. Any guidance please? One further bit of info is that the problem seems to happen more frequently when Im in the Channel Islands (Guernsey) where my local ADSL line is via SURE.
Have you checked with BT about their server status?

Apple Mail account suddenly offline, smtp offline
iMac 27" (late 2009) updated to Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10 and Apple Mail 8.0 (1990.1) 17th October 2014.
Mail accounts in Apple Mail where working as years before until Yesterday, 3th November 2014. Suddenly 2 out of 3 accounts where offline showing the warning triangle icon on the right. Command "go online" and "syncronize" has no effect. Activity in Mail is showing no try to connect. Looking into the account config I see that the SMTP are "offline".
I checked everything and compared to the settings of the one account which is still normal working. Everything is identically set up. Only differences are the domain names, username and pwd. The domain names are on the same external virtual hosts and have same configs. The on the iMac faulty accounts are working on iPad and iPhone like ever and from the same internal network. My hardware firewall or the external mailserver can not be the reason.
I deleted 1) SMTP config, 2) whole mail account, 3) all corresponding keys in keychain and was setting up from new. No chance, they show SMTP offline and do not go online in IMAP. Next was trying to give account #1 the SMTP from the working #3. The SMTP #3 shows fine but near the inbox of account #1 i have again the warning triangle. No go online, no sync, no action in the activity window.
I go setting up Mail with these accounts in a new user. Mail was totally empty as I started config of two accounts. After doing all they where at the same point. No connection possible.
Why is this happend suddenly and after more than 2 weeks after Yosmite update? Why is one account working, two others not anymore?Sorry, just found the details. Here we go:

Still can't send email with Yosemite due to SMTP offline?
Hello there. I logged a question immediately after downloading yosemite which seemed to have resulted in my email account not working.
no matter what I do, when trying to send an email Iget messages of SMTP offline'; I have tried all kinds of suggestions from on here all to no effect.
Tonight I deleted the accounts, logged off, rebooted and recreated the two email accounts. I can now receive email but still cannot send and get the same 'SMTP Offline' message as before.
As before the two accounts and same settings work flawlessly on iPad 2, windows laptop and two Android based phones, so must be linked to the iMac and Yosemite?

Smtp offline cannot send mails can receive
Cannot send mails from mac mail continues to show smtp offline however i can only receive mails, at my wits end
Try the Mailbox menu and select Take all accounts offline, then select Take all accounts online.
If this does not work, you should call your email provider. They may have changed their settings for SMTP, or you may be on a different network that requires different settings. -
Smtp "offline" message, unable to send e-mails
I am unable to send e-mails from my Mac Mail. Receiving is no problem. I was just online with my internet/email server, did everything they told me to, which didn't solve the problem; they told me to contact Mac.
I did all the usual things, as recommended on the Mac website under "can't send e-mails". I was told by the Telus agent to select port #25 to be the custom port, which I did. I keep getting the SMTP offline notice in the "cannot send message" box. the "Doctor" tells me that trying to log-in to this account failed, verify username and password (which I did).
Any help would be appreciated!
ThanksHi
I've had a mac for years (10.5.8) and Telus for one year and this just happened two days ago to me too.
Would you believe all I had to do was remove the server settings and then re-enter them! Check the Telus website for the instructions. Mail sends no problem now!
Here's how I figured it out: .
I used the report within the mac server settings once the error occured and copied the text in order to review. I found this strange caption:
READ Jun 23 20:51:51.885 [kCFStreamSocketSecurityLevelNone] -- host:smtp.telus.net -- port:25 -- socket:0x145cf7f0 -- thread:0x145ce2f0
554 edmwcm02 bizsmtp ESMTP server not available, your ip is balcklisted by spamhaus. Go to http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=70.69.240.140
SO I went to their website and it suggested to check to box for stmp authentication for a quick fix. So I checked with the Telus instructions on their site and it said NOT TOO - so don't. Its sounds like spam glue!
Long story, Macs rock, everything you need is there, just think and you can use it allot easier and more to suceed than windows. -

Try the remove and re-add the email account.
Also, what SMTP port is being used?

TS3276 can receive mail, can not send, set up smtp(offline)?
I feel like a jerk, I know it is probably a simple change of wording in advanced setting or something I'm not doing correctly but I can not send mail using aol server. I use Safari only and have 2 accounts plus icloud, I have my Macbook Pro about 10 months and have had several mail issues but I worked them out.
Hello:
I use AOL's mail as well.
Open mail. Go to preferences and highlight your account in the sidebar. Click on accounts>account information. The out going mail server should show smtp.aol.com:your account name. If that shows "offline," click on the drop down menu "edit smtp server list." The server name should be smtp.aol.com in use by your account. Click on advanced. You should use the default ports (25,465,587). I authenticate using a password and my password is prefilled. On rare occasions I have had a "gremlin" erase the password in that password box. I have no clue how that happened, but the AOL server would not handle outgoing mail - showed offline. Sometimes it took me quite awhile (restarts, etc) to get things going again.

Mountain Lion Update - Mail (SMTP) Offline Ever Since
I have been struggling with an issues for about four days that seems to be a known problem. Ever since I installed a Mountain Lion update the other day, my email servers have been offline (SMTP). I have re-inputted all my settings, have checked them and double checked them. I am completely lost. I can see that other people have struggled with this issue and initially the advice was that perhaps it was a problem with the email supplier. However, after doing my research I can see it seems to be a known problem with Mountain Lion, but I cannot find a fix anywhere.
I have an Apple Care call scheduled for tomorrow but given that I cannot find any definitive answers about this on these forums, I don't think Apple can supply me with one.
Has anyone had the same problem and successfully resolved? I have tried changing the ports (all three numbers mentioned in other posts), I have re-inputted the details, I have tried the workarounds that have been suggested. I'm not remotely techie but have tried everything I have read. I cannot get either Tiscali or my work email servers back online. I certainly don't want to change to Outlook or anything other than Mail.
Any ideas? If Apple Care can help then I will of course post the outcome here
ps iPad and iPhone do not have the same problem - most bizarre, I can send emails from those devices, just not my Macbook with Mountain Lion! Here's how to see if you're having the same issue I was having. (Note that, for me, the problem was not with my iCloud account; I don't know whether the steps below apply to fixing this problem for an iCloud account.)
1. In Mail, go to the Mail menu and choose "Preferences...".
2. At the top of the Preferences panel, choose "Accounts."
3. In the sidebar, choose the account that you can't send from.
4. At the top of that account's panel, choose the "Account Information" tab.
5. Go down to the "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" dropdown menu. Does the affected account's smtp server have "(Offline)" next to its name in the dropdown menu? If yes, choose "Edit SMTP Server List..." from the bottom of the dropdown menu.
6. In the middle of the panel, choose the "Advanced" tab.
7. Can you see a Password field? If yes, is the Password field empty? If yes, then fill in the password and click "OK" at the bottom.
8. Now, as you did in Step 5, choose "Edit SMTP Server List..." from the "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" dropdown and click on the "Advanced" tab. Is the password field that you just filled in empty again? If so, you're having the same problem I was having.
Here's how we fixed it on my computer:
9. Open your Applications folder. Find the Utilities folder and open it. Open the Keychain Access application.
10. In Keychain Access, in the panel on the left side of the window, click on "login."
11. In the main part of the window, in the list of keychain items, locate the keychain item for the mail account that's not working for you. Its name will likely start with "smtp" (as in, for example, "smtp.gmail.com") or it's possible that it could start with "mail" (for example, "mail.pretendemailservice.com").
12. When you find the keychain item for the offline smtp server, click on it once to highlight it, then go to the Edit menu and choose "Delete."
13. Now go back to Mail preferences and enter the password in the same place you tried to enter it in Step 7 above.
In my case, this fixed the problem. The password did not disappear after I clicked "OK," and I was able to send email from the account again. I hope this works for you. I know how maddening this problem is. -
I several SMTP servers in my Apple Mail. All of sudden all of them bacame offline.
what could cause this?I've also seen my internet connection go offline even though 2 minutes before everything was fine. The problem is not limited just to Mail because both my browser and uploading with Dreamweaver produced failed connection warnings.
It seems that we are all using MacBook Pros so this may be an Airport issue. Turning it off and then back on often restored functionality.
That said, can this be a non-Apple problem about who our ISP is? We have AT&T's U-verse and my brother who works for the company said that some of their equipment dating from 2007 to 2008 has had some glitches. I haven't had a chance to use a public wi-fi long enough to see if this happens away from home.
I had to resend this because my wi-fi was down again from 5 minutes ago.

I am constantly having a problem with my smtp going offline randomly. I have ended up fixing it but am really having difficulty this time fixing it. I do believe this is an Apple problem since until upgrading I NEVER had a problem with my smtp. I know this isn't my server's problem since I am able to send out easily from my IPAD using the same server. I have read that other's are having this problem. Is Apple looking at this problem? There was also just a system update and once again I am having a problem.
I have been having the same exact problem ever since upgrading to OS X Mountain Lion too.
