  • How do you access the BT speedtester utility?

Hello! Just got activated this morning. It's all very exciting. Here's a speedtest result from speedtest.net:
I noticed that some people are using the BT speedtester utility to find their speed profile and do a more reliable speedtest. However, when I try to use the utility, I get the following error:
"Performance Tester is unable to run the speed test for your telephone number:020xxxxxxxx. Please check that it is the correct telephone number for your service. Did you follow all the instructions given on the website, before initiating the speed test. If not, then please follow all the instructions carefully and try to run the test again. If you believe it is the correct number for your service and you have followed all the instructions then please ask your Service Provider whether you can use Performance Tester to test your Broadband speed. If yes, then ask him for the Service ID of your broadband connection and try again with this Service ID along with your Telephone Number. If this problem persists, raise the issue with your service provider.".
This is my correct telephone number. How may I get my service ID instead? Or is there another way to use this utility?

    Hi Wizen
    Glad you got installed eventually....
Your not the only person who could not run the BT speedtest with a recently installed fibre service.
    From THIS THREAD
"Managed a speed test at 70MBs but can't get in the BT one until I get a service ID"
He phoned to get his.... but being a FTTP trial customer they may get a special phone number,
I'd wait a few days for database updates and if still no joy then you could either phone Bt or maybe contact the Forum Mods again.
EDIT No I don't think you'll have to do that.... I'm pretty sure given a few days your BT Infinity telephone number will work on.-http://www.speedtester.bt.com/
Btw I hope you don't mind but I have quoted your post here about the success you have in using your 200Mbps homeplugs.
I wonder if Homeplugs should be connected to the HH3 GiG port?
He is using 100Mbps homeplugs in port 1 the slower HH3 socket.
Would that help make them more usable in using port 4 the Gig socket?... I know people normally use 200Mbps types to get the best from Infinity's speed.

  • Speedtester won't work and then tells me I need to...

My broadband performance has been poor and intermittenly appalling over the last week (I read so many people complaining they're only getting 20Meg when they were promised up to 70. I get 1.5 Meg on a good day..I live in the sticks and all the village is the same..we're told this is as good as it's going to get).
But this is not about the poor performance. After the last week, I finally decided to run BT's Speedtester.
1/First I enter the phone number and hit START TEST..every time, the next message I get is 'Sorry there is a problem checking your details - please check you have entered the number correctly and restart the test'
    Why is this?
2/ I HAVE entered the number correctly first time, so I hit START TEST again. This time the test starts (will take up to 60 seconds) then I get 'Sorry - we are not able to match all your details. You can continue to run our download speed test but we can only offer a limited assessment of your results'
    Why is this?
3/I continue with the test - then I get 'We have detected you don't have Flash installed on your browser. Please download and install from here' where I get the option to start a download. I know I have got Flash installed.
    Why is this?
I was at a friend's house yesterday and found her broadband was slow too (we're on the same exchange) so tried the speedtester and her's also went through exactly the same sodding rigmarole. As I wasn't sure if she had Flash I decided to run the download (which took about 30 minutes) and then restarted the test - same as above then it still told me Flash wasn't installed.
We both have Macs but both are fully up to date with all latest Apple updates.
    Anyone any ideas?
Incidentally, I found the BT Wholesale speed tester and ran that successfully twice. I got 0.02Mbps and 0.05Mbps download speeds!! Is that a record?!
I'll report the poor performance tomorrow, but I think I'll get better answers about the speed tester from the forum community.

This evening, my broadband is running at normal speed, ie about 1.5meg. I will run these tests again when I am experiencing trouble.
My BT broadband is generally incredibly reliable. In the 5 or 6 years I've had it, i would estimate I've had no more than 5 or 6 interrupts, normally due to lines down. I've habitually turned the router off overnight, but am now leaving it on all the time, though given that my tests in the past have shown my speed is about 1.5 meg and BT tell me that that is the best I'm ever going to get, then I'm not sure if there's anything to be gained by leaving it on.
Oh yes, the very poor speed I've experienced that has increased markedly in the last week or so...I am sure this first started right after I upgraded my BT account to unlimited download about 3 or 4 months ago, though my average usage is still only 37.69GB
But in the meantime, my original question is, why does Speedtest not work, on my Mac, my wife's Mac, my daughter's Mac and my friend's Mac, all with up to date software, all giving the same errors described above

  • Wireless and Ethernet Network Do Not Work Other Than SpeedTest

I have been having major problems with my Mac's Internet.  Whenever I connect to my Wireless or Ethernet Connection, the signal start out strong and dies down to almost nothing (around .4 kbps) immediatly.  I have been having this problem for a couple of weeks now.  However, when I run SpeedTest.net, I get the connection speeds which I should be getting.  My Network Application thingy (iStat Menus) shows a major increase from .4kbps to 6MBps when the speedtest in running.  Any ideas on how I can fix this problem?

It's a router all right. The next question is what is the "downstairs" device? Router or...?
The Aliant is configured through a browser interface and its IP address ought to be 192.168.2.1. Put those numbers in Safari's URL field and see if its webpage loads. If it does, you might be able to find a setting called "bridge mode".
Beware that I'm way out in the weeds with this suggestion - changing things in that unit may cause you even more problems. Since you said it is connected to a "wall Ethernet plug" I'm concluding that it should not be acting as a router, but that depends on what is upstream of that wall plug, and what functions the downstairs device is performing.
If the "wall Ethernet plug" is in fact a phone line and not an Ethernet LAN port then it is your router and you won't want to change that.

  • Download speeds, 600kb/s via speedtester, but only...

    Hi all,
Does anyone know why Im getting download speeds of around 600kb/s via speedtesters and the Binary newsgroups, but via hotfile, megaupload and rapidshare (have premium accounts for all) i'm only getting 30kb/s ???
    Im baffled completely !!
Are BT throttling these sites ??
    Thanks
    Dave

    Dave,
The BT speedtester runs completly different to file sharing sites. When you test with the BT Speedtester, your connection isn't going out to the internet. From what I gather, It goes from your Computer, through the exchange and then straight to the BT Speedtester servers (without going out to the internet). By doing this it bypasses any of the traffic going out to the internet and doesn't get affected by the national contention ratios which is important for an accurate test. This is probably why you are only getting 30kb/s on external file sharing sites. I suggest you try and use the Thinkbroadband speedtest here: http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html to see if it is a problem with either the contention or something else.
    Good luck

  • BT Speedtester doesn't work for me

My ISP is not a BT one and up until a couple of weeks ago I was able to run the BT Speedtester owing to the fact that I had and indeed still am having speed issues. However, since then, I cannot run that Speedtester because any attempts to do so fail, giving an error message. Reading through various posts related to speed issues, I note that some members have been able to use the BT Speedtester very recently. Could the reason for failure to connect be because my ISP is not BT?
    Thanks

I take it you are using the http://www.speedtester.bt.com one and not the one on the BT Help Website. If this is the case then you will need to contact your ISP for support because the first link is one for all ISP's on BT Wholesale's network and they have to look after your service, this is BT Retail which is completely separate of BT Wholesale.

  • Warning: java 7 and BT speedtest

Warning:  As has been pointed out here and on other forums, the BT speedtester is not compatible with Java 7.  This was previously a techie problem, but now Oracle seem to be rolling out Java 7 to 'ordinary' users.  If you are using the BT speedtests at the moment (eg to get ip profile information), I suggest you do not accept the Java update.
This does not apply to other speedtesters such as ThinkBroadband and speedtest.net.  It may well not apply to the BT beta speedtester, but this one is not much use anyway as it seems to have worse servers than speedtest.net (at least for me) and does not give ip profile information.
p.s. I'd be happy to be proved wrong on any of these points.

Further exploration, and comments on http://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity/Speedtester-bt-com-error-message/m-p/564093 showed me that my Java 7 theory wasn't completely correct.   It worked fine for some people.  It seems there are complications if you have VPN connections or other network adaptors (VirtualBox in my case).  I got the hint for the V6 issue and possible solution from http://jonathangiles.net/blog/?p=1126   I tried disabling ipv6 in the various network connections as suggested, but no help.  The solution for me was to change the default Java7 ip stack.
One way to apply this patch is:
    make sure no Java running
go to the Java control panel
    Java tab
    View ...
    insert -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true under Runtime Parameters
close View and java control panel
I'm not sure if this will automatically be undone when you next install another Java.  Any suggestions for appropriate semi-permament alternative patches welcome.

  • Unable to use bt speedtester

    Hi
This happened for years and years when I was with another provider.
Now it's disappeared again (since October) and I haven't been able to access it since then.
    Comes up with
The Performance Tester is currently unable to run a speed test for your broadband connection. Please try again shortly, however if this problem persists, raise the issue with your service provider.
    always now and since October.
My throughput is better, up to 6.5 mb/s now according to Thinkbroadband speedchecker, not brilliant I know as I am only 500 yards from the exchange, but very very very much better than the last few years.
What do I have to do to get it back?
    Thanks for any help,
    Hilary

    Hi ChefHilary,
    Your problem maybe over
It would seem as though www.speedtester.bt.com is no more.  When I tried to run it a few minutes ago I got this message :-

  • 135k only + speedtester can't complete test

Our line has dropped to 135k as a result of a faulty extension. That was over a week ago and the line is still at the slow speed. (Hub 2.0 connected to main socket since then)
I've tried to run the speed test a few times but it can't complete the test. It tells me I have 135k, carries out the upload test and then displays this error.
The Performance Tester could not perform Assured Rate throughput test ,
    Please try again later.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If that rate stays then your IP profile should rest eventually (between now and 5 daysm probably nearer 12 hours) but running speedtester is the only way to be sure,
If you still cannot run iit make sure you are not stopping it via firewall rules or thing slike peerblocker.
The test socket is the same as the master but will all extension wiring disconnected so you still have a fault in the house wiring it seems to me.

  • Iphone 4s speedtest results not the same as imac's

i ran a speedtest on both products (same wifi network of course) and the download speed of my iphone is way too low compared to my imac's. just .5 mbps vs 3mbps on the imac. i already did the network reset on my iphone but still the same results. do i need to do something or do i just have to have my iphone replaced? thanks.
btw, when i ran a test using my network's 3G, it showed higher results compared to the wifi.

They should be comparable, but they will never be the same.  The computer has a faster processor so it should be able to download and process the data faster.
    Are the speeds dramatically different?

I cannot run any of the speedtests (speedtest.net or speakeasy.net) from Firefox (newest version), IE or Google Chrome. I have update flash player and Java. The computer has been tested for infections and none are found. The Hosts file looks fine. Temp files have been removed. The speedtest.net works in IE10 in safe mode. Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, 64 bit, 8 GB RAM, etc.

What occurs when you try to run the above sites?<br>
    Any error messages or crashes?
