BT Vision Box unable to show Freeview HD channels ...

I have been sent a BT vision box due to the fact my Youview Box is unable to have the skysports channels I was told this was a newer box I was told on the phone and my youview box was outdated when I suscribed to the Skyports channels just last week. I plug in my BT vision box everything is fine except I am unable to watch Freeview HD channels.
The Problem is my BT Vision Box shows the Sport Channels except the freeview HD Channels, I get them on normal.
My Youview box shows the Freeview HD Channels and everything else expect the Sky sports channels.
I have spent 2 hours on the phone last week with the technical support team and probably even more as I called twice they even put me through to the sales team because I said I wasnt suscribed to freeview channels (because thats what it says on the TV) and everyone was telling me I was suscribed and I was unable to view the Freeview HD channels. I even took a day off work which I will not get back to get a freeview engineer guy to come to my house which the BT technical team sent and tell me theres nothing he can do and he checked my signal and said it was perfect and told me the Youview box was newer and the BT vision box was older even though I was told vice versa by a BT sales rep when I bought the Skysports channels.
So can someone help me so I can view all my channels I have and not have to swap between boxes and I do not want to speak people on the other side of the world to sort my problem out.
I have done the search channel and reset the box which has not worked.

Utter nonsense! The black BT Vision+ box came out at least 3.5 years ago. The BT Youview box came out just over 1 year ago.
The reason you can't have Sky Sports over Infinity on the BT Youview box is because Sky haven't agreed to let BT resell Sky Sports on that platform. It's not due to any technical limitation. BT have asked Ofcom to look into this.
The reason you can't pick up the Freeview HD channels over the aerial using the BT Vision+ box is because it is a much older box and doesn't have Freeview HD (DVB-T2) tuners. You need to pick them up over Infinity by getting the 'PSB HD' multicast entitlement added to your account.
The person on the phone was talking rubbish. The engineer was talking sense. His trip to your house sounds like a total waste of both your time and his time. At least BT paid for it I assume.

bt vision box while recordin 1 programme i go to another channel to watch it says no signal or weak signal, and the rest of the channels say the same thing. we have recently brought a new areil lead which is shielded,we stayed on a channel wid the blank screen and when the recordin finished the picture came up we have had problems before this its very annoyin all we do is try and fix this problems any1 know what could be wrong.

no signal or weak signal normally mean an aerial problem or you are in a poor reception area at the moment till the digital switch-over is completed in your area

  • Tv losing channels when vision box turned on

When vision box is turned on I lose channels - film4 and radio channels and screen pixelates on others. Not actually watching channels through box, just on tv. Screen says no signal. As soon as box turned off signal returns. When scanning for channels vision box cannot find these channels. Any help gratefully received.

This is nearly always HDMI interference. I get this on 666MHz which for me is Pick TV and a few others.
Basically the HDMI interface generates Radio Freqency interference - it is a by-product of the high bandwidth required to send the full HD signal from the box to whatever. This RFI then leaks out of the cable (even the expensive 'shielded' ones) and will often cause 'damage' to the signal being received down your el-cheapo TV aerial cable into the TV tuner. It will peak at certain frequencies and this is why not every channel is affected.
I have found the only way to (partially) cure the issue with my setup is to install clip-on ferrite cores (the bug ones) onto every HDMI cable and wind the cable at least once through the centre of the ferrite. I say only partially cure as if the signal level of the MUX on 666MHz drops OR there is other noise, then the HDMI interference will knock out that MUX.
Another fix is to ensure that your HDMI cables are kept as far away from your TV aerial connection(s) and any amplifiers as is possible, even if it means using a longer cable with a less direct route from box to TV. Don't bunch or wrap all the cables together, and don't be fooled into paying a kings ransom for HDMI cables. Many have found the cheaper cables generate less RFI for some reason.

  • New BT Vision Box stops my other digital freeview ...

I'm a new BT vision customer and have set my vision box up to include using the poweline adapters as my tv is otherside of the room to my homehub and all works fine.
However the TV we have in the bedroom that has freeview built in will no longer receive any signal. This TV connects direct into a aerial socket on the wall and there have been no issues. For info this TV backs onto the wall where the homehub and one of the power line adapters are.
Any ideas how to get around the issue of all my BT vision kit from preventing the other TV receiving a signal.
TV has been checked and all is ok. Had a scan through google and can see that there maybe issues with BT vision affecting Wii's and so on but not other TV's with freeview built in.
    Any help would be welcome.
    Thanks!

Any electrical device generates noise which can be picked up on a cable. Powerlines by their very nature can generate more electrical disturbance than most. You can help minimise the effect by keeping cabling as far away as possible from powerlines and transformers. Screened aerial cable may also help with induced noise.
I suppose the cheap and nasty test to see of the Powerline is the cause of the issue would be to temporarily unplug the one close to your upstairs TV and see if the Freeview reception returns. Unfortunately with aerial cables which are buried in the wall you have no way of knowing how close they run to the ringmain, so it's possible that the extra signal the Powerline is putting on the mains cabling could be the issue. That would be a git to resolve.

  • New BT Vision Box - Why no Freeview HD?

Why does the new BT vision box not support the DVB-T2 standard required for HD freeview? If BT is serious about competing with Sky and Virgin it needs to have 'live' HD services and better sports content.
I understand that the content issue is being addressed with the ofcom ruling on Sky’s pricing of its sports channels, but the hardware needs to be able to compete too.
I have read elsewhere on the net that the next generation box will support T2, but how long will we have to wait for that? The DVB-T2 standards have been around for a number of years and I think it is quite short sighted of BT to bring a 'new' box to market so close to a freeview HD launch without that capability. They should have waited a few months and included it from the start.
I bet they release a new one with DVB-T2 HD capability 2 weeks before the BBC/BT canvas box comes out and I would wager it won’t support the canvas platform!
I hope BT get this sorted soon, I would love to use my Vbox instead of my Sky box (the HD box is very flaky) but until these issues are sorted I can’t use it for anything else other than a 'bedroom box'
As a BT shareholder and lover of all things tech, these little things worry me. Please sort it BT

That piece about the software upgrade is not correct... Bt have stated to me on many occasions that a new box is required as the hardware is incompatiable.. the HD you speak off (which confuses their call reps sometimes!) is for Streaming HD only via the internet. The Codec's are there I understand, but the physical chip is not the right one..
The Chipsets Must/are out there as Humax have them in their boxs!
My feelings are, you wont see a new box out of BT until Project Canvas comes to fruition at which point you will see a Freeview HD box from BT with Vision on Demand plus Content streaming over the Internet. At which point you will see a complete relaunch of BT Vision into a much more Internet Centred Product, prehaps offering a TV based Web Browser in addition to the BT Vision Library, Project Canvas Content/functionality etc.. You may start to see Linear Channels appearing via your ADSL service too at this point.. I would imagine this would happen "In time for Christmas 2010"..
You may see a "Projet Canvas capable *with sw upgrade*" HD or SD box appear before the world cup with heavy promotion , but nobody knows!
The only things you will probably see out of BT now will be more "Streamed/Downloadable" HD Content, and possibly Sky Sports as either a Linear or PPV Service.
Fingers crossed and a lot of patience required if you want Freeview HD via BT Vision.. I know Im waiting, Cant see the point of getting it now over Sky..

  • New BT Vision box - no Freeview HD

My brother in law asked me to set up his BTV box - just arrived - so he could watch BT Sport.  That was easy and he can now watch BT Sport 1 and 2.  He is on a 4mb adsl line and has problems watching catchup - but reckons that is because he lives deep in Suffolk countryside and is not much bothered.
However, I was puzzled that he could not receive the Freeview HD channels - does the new box not have an HD tuner? (I have YouView boxes and 38Mb Infinity so I wasn't sure what to expect).  I did rescan thebox but no HD - he receives from Sudbury.
BTW he was told that he was paying £5 amonth for Sport (I suggested this was for TV Essentials as Sport is free) and this would go up to £20 next year - anyone heard this?
    Solved!

The BT Box does not have a Freeview HD tuner. The HD channels are delivered over Infinity Broadband.
He will be paying for the Essentials package at £5. This is not increasing next year.

  • New Black BT Vision box - what is missing, a discu...

Maybe it's just me but here is a list of things which are currently missing or wrong with the new BT Vision box (black edition with new interface and OS). Thought it might be useful to keep a list of these going which people can add to.
would also appreciate it if anyone can help with any of these issues in case i've missed something
Red button doesn't work - believe this is  'coming soon'. you can still access the channels by going to 301 or 302
Teletext doesn't work - the button pops up a message saying it's not available, coming soon?
There is no way to set recordings to over run? - this used to be very handy on old box, particularly with live shows. is this being brought back?
No signal strength tester - you used to be able to check digital signal reception strength and quality from the settings menu, not any more
Pressing 'play' when viewing a recording doesn't flash up the progress bar - any other good way to do this, used to be handy. Fix: pressing "select" does the trick
no HD Freeview - the box isn't capable, wondering whether they might upgrade us to YouView later on for this?
No options to set resolution - used to be able to define 720p or 1080i for instance, not any more
Sky Sports small white box - a small logo in the bottom right area, not sure what this is or why it's now there?
    Subtitles on iPlayer missing
Some reported picture quality issues - both on SCART and HDMI
    On the plus side:
Bigger capacity on the hard disc
Faster inteface and movement between sections
Nice new design and sharp interface resolution
Channel logos / graphics now in the information bar menu
When in the TV Guide there's still a small box showing you what you are watching on the current channel
    Music playlist
    Bookmarks
Reinstatement of the 30s jump and better fast-forward / rewind (30s jump doesn't work on Sky Sports)
Ability to jump to specific point in recordings (you need to start it first, then stop and go back into it to have option)
Ability to reenter a recording at a time offset
Icon to show which recordings have been watched
    HD iPlayer
    Recently viewed in iPlayer
Ability to resume a programme on iPlayer
    Ability to resume on demand
    Disk usage on Recordings page
Auto switching format for HDMI and SCARTOne-press toggling of Subtitles and Audio
    Previous channel facility
'Play all' feature for On Demand series
anything else people want to add?

  • BT Vision Box Not Receiving ITV or CH4?

Hello. I've joined this forum for the purposes of attempting to resolve a problem that my parents are having with their BT Vision Box.
They are very happy with the system in general, but recently my mother has been unable to watch/record ITV very often. She has tried re-scanning for channels, but this simply lost several channels from the tv guide altogether.
Now I realise that atmospherics sometimes play havoc with freeview, but the reason I am perplexed is that my Panasonic tv upstairs (with inbuilt digital reciever) has almost no trouble recieving these channels, bar the odd blip or two.
Yesterday was case in point when I could watch Doc Martin in perfect quality, and downstairs could see literally nothing. Progarm unavailiable. Channel 4 was the same, though it was at least a static broken image on the BT Vision Box, and not just a black screen.
We had a digital ariel installed about 6 years ago (at some cost) which both our televisions run off (theirs through the Vision Box, as their tv does not have built-in digital tuner). The cableing is up to date aswell, and we have some kind of booster attachment aswell (though the guy who installed the ariel insisted it wasn't a booster, but we need it plugged in to get a signal).
So in conclusion, why can't the BT Vision Box recieve channels from the same ariel as my television, that has no problem getting them?

I think someone conned you somewhere along the line.
It sounds very much like a booster to me.
Also the wind ought to have no effect on your aeriel. (note not ariel that's for your washing machine )
It really does sound like an aerial issue to be honest and maybe it would be worth getting someone to look at it.
If you take the downlead out of this box can you plug the aerial in to the TV?
Hang on - is your TV fed from this box?

  • BT Vision+box update

I have a spare bt vision+ box that is used for freeview only. It recently showed that it needed an update but failed to download the update tool as it was not connected to broadband and turned itself off after numerous attempts to download the update tool. I connected it to broadband and it successfully downloaded the update tool and advised box is being updated and will restart when the new software has been installed but the box remains in standby with the blue light on and the remote not functioning. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi franny,
Just curious. How Long did you leave the STB in that state ?
From my experience, after an update, it does a hard disk check, which sometimes can last for about 20-30 minutes.
Is this issue seen even after you reboot the STB manually ?
If that doesn't work even after waiting for so long, I suggest you factory reset your STB by re-powering it, and holding the Left + Down buttons on the front panel, until you see the update screen again.

  • New BT Vision Box to receive Freview HD?

I had been a BT Vision customer for around three years. I then moved to Sky for two years, but am now thinking of coming back to BT Vision, especially with the prospect of BT Infinity.
I've looked around the forums and website to see what's changed/improved with the service and I must say I'm impressed. However, as has been documented many times on this and other forums, the Black Vision+ box is unable to receive freeview HD. I'm aware that BT are linked with Youview and a new freeview HD receiving box is in the pipeline alongside that with an ETA of sometime early next year.
Interestingly, I just had a online chat with a BT customer service person called Roxy and inquired into this. My question to her was whether it was worth me signing up now to BT Vision or waiting a few weeks for the new freeview HD receiving box to be available. The answer I got was "You may as well wait", and she implied that the new box shall be available in a few weeks.
    Thought you might be interested.
I shall be waiting a few weeks.

  • BT Vision + box ( black box ) - Missing the end o...

Fitted new BT Vision + box to allow me to have BT Sport in August 2013 . I don't have Infinity as my house doesn't have a Fibre Cabinet yet . All is working OK apart from we regularly miss the end of programmes which have been set up to record . I never had this issue with the Silver BT Vision box for the many years I have been using BT Vision. Im pretty sure lots of other people have this issue , can someone advise of a fix for this or is  the New BT Vision + box not up to the job or is there another explanation . I rang technical helpdesk which was offshore only to be told sounds like an issue with our Freeview signal missing the end of programmes .

  • Help with BT Vision Box - rebooting every 15-20min...

I need help with this please!! I have been unable to watch TV using the Vision Box since last week as the box is rebooting itself at least every 15 to 20 minutes. It is impossible to record anything as the box drops out and then we cannot watch the shows. I am getting increasingly frustrated as I feel that what I am paying does not reflect the service I am getting from BT.

    Hi SineadMcB,
Welcome and thanks for posting. I can look into this for you. Drop me an email with the details. You'll find the "contact us" form in the about me section of my profile.

  • BT Vision box signal strength indicator

Just received the latest black BT Vision box replacing an older version. Old version worked really well, good picture. New one using same leads and aerial point pixellates at times horribly. The signal quality indicator usually indicates 100% and is green in colour. The signal strength indicator varies: sometimes is shows over 70dBuV and is red, other times it is around 64dBuV and is orange and occasionally it is around 56dBuV an is green. What should it be? It pixellates even when the indicator is green. I had a big new roof aerial fitted a few years ago  and there is a booster/distributor box in the roof - currently running just two tv's off it, although rarely at the same time.
Why does the new box not work when the old one did? What do I need to do to cure this? Is the signal too strong or too weak?! Any ideas out there?
    Thanks, Graham

Thanks for the feedback. I have tried splitting the aerial with a passive splitter - perhaps marginally better but difficult to say. Even tried splitting again to the point where the signal was showing weak. The strength indicator seems to have a colour coding, starting off red with a weak signal, going orange, then green, then as the signal is stronger it goes orange again and back to red when too strong. I have hit the green optimum region and gone either side of it. Pixellation is always there. Reading all the posts on here about this, I am coming to the conclusion that I am not going to be able to fix this.
I may ask BT to reinstate the old box, it worked perfectly - I only asked for a replacement so that I can have BT Sports and the option of Sky sports. I will just have to stream BT sport to my laptop if I want it. I am a little disappointed about this though.

  • Bt vision box 2nd box is also faulty!!

okay, so im not a big TV viewer, but i do like to record programmes and watch them when the weathers bad, etc.  My Silver box crashed, as out of date a few months ago.  Promised a new box,  which took 4 weeks to resolve because the advisor said they would send out a box,  but BT dont. (bad management advice to staff???)
Eventually an engineer arrived,  provided a box, which has lasted about a month.  It developed a time delay from pressing a button on remote to actually activating the changeover  of about 30 seconds, doesnt sound much, but a bit frustrating when your trying to catch an important news story.
Now engineer came a week ago,  reset the box,  that didnt work so a week later a new box provided, and guess what, it keeps switching itself off !!!  Im not sure if its updating or if its just fed up.  But I really do dispair.
Not only do we now have to keep a paper list of programmes we record because we have to re enter the details with each reset or new box,  but im half way through recording a programme and the whole thing stops, and im left with half a programme.
Ive been offered £20 compensation for one months NO USE of BT vision and considering it was freeview programmes and nothing could be watched,  I had hoped that would be sent asap, but have been told it will be on my next bill  which is in august.  Con??
    Sky TV really is beckoning.

Enquire about a Youview box. These are much more reliable than the Vision Box, and are currently replacing the old silver boxes.

  • New BT vision box appears to keep rebooting

First, a big hello to everyone.
I signed up recently for broadband and vision. Broadband was working from about Saturday although didn't get text from BT to confirm switch on till this morning.
Yesterday Vision box said error C04 (wait till your activation date), fair enough, so checked again this morning and came through the 'rainbow' screen and said connecting to registration server, and a few seconds later did what appeared to be a reboot of the box and repeated the same thing, basically going round in a circle, I left it for about 20 mins or so going round and round.
Is this to be expected? Powerlines are all showing green lights, broadband seems happy. Should I wait until later on does it not sound promising?
    Thanks,
    Curly
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It sounds like BT Vision has not been set up on your line yet. Whenever it boots up, the Vision box tries to connect to the BT Vision servers. If this fails, it tries again a few times before giving up entirely.
Cynical people might suggest that this behaviour was deliberately designed to ensure that the Vision box would be completely useless without a subscription to BT Vision.
