BT4500 with nuisance call blocker - strange number...

I bought some BT4500 phones with nuisance call blocker. I have set it up to block withheld, international and payphone numbers. In general it works well, but I am getting more and more marketting calls from numbers which either 1) don't seem to conform to UK numbering (e.g. 0102055) or 2) look like international numbers (e.g. 0015183999915). My simple(?) questions are:
1) How can I establish the origin of calls by their number? For example, if 0102055 is in the UK, it is presumably registered to someone and thus can be reported to TPS; and although 0015183999915 looks like an international number, is it? (because international callers do not usually have their number presented).
2) If a number is international (number presented) why doesn't my nuisance call blocker send it straight to the answering machine?
I had a lengthy chat to the BT help line but I couldn't get answers to these questions. They simply offered me a number change (don't want) and "choose to refuse" (only works for pre-specified numbers), and suggested international call barring (no good because I get some genuine international calls which go to the answering machine).
Can anyone provide answers?

Thank you for your replies. Even if some international numbers are being sent, then I would expect the nuisance call blocker phones to block them if I have "block international calls" set. I will try some experiments. Unfortunately, the blocking phones can block either on type (e.g. withheld, international) or on specific numbers, but not both. I suspect that blocking on number will be the start of a long term chase similar to blocking email addresses.
Unfortunately, one of the popular externally fitted call blockers only has the features that you mention. i.e it is the same - you can do either/or, but not both.
However it seems that most of them hold a database of known nuisance callers.
My own phone (not a BT model) only blocks calls by numbers entered. It's quite effective, but does, as you say, take some time to filter out the junk callers.
But the other popular external call blocker has many more features available. It can block anything , but known callers can be allowed through.

  • Nuisance Calls to direct number

I recently purchased a direct number from Skype; unfortunately this number receives numerous calls for the previous person.  Skype recylces numbers after 90 days.
Skype's website helpfully says to contact them if you receive nuisance calls.  If you actually do this, their suggestions are (a) switch on privacy so only people in your contacts can call you or (b) buy a new number.
They have no escalation procedures for complaints.  The easy solution would be to change the number but they have refused.  Very poor customer service.

  • How do calls from self appear on the bill when you make a call blocking your number

how do call appear on the bill when one blocks your own number so the receiver doesn't see who the caller is?

I'm sorry. That doesn't make much sense. Please rephrase the question. If you're asking what shows up on your phone bill if someone with caller ID blocking turned on calls you, why don't you look at your bill and see for yourself?

  • Nuisance calls from 01133280180

These nuisance calls, particularly from 01133280180, telling you your windows have problems are a pain in the proverbial. If and when they actually talk I tell them my windows were cleaned yesterday and I can see through them very well. Normally they hang up on me. However, more often than not nobody speaks. I get this number calling me two or three times a day.
What, if anything, can BT do to stop these calls? Probably not a lot. I already have BT Privacy with Caller Display and TPS. No doubt they would tell me to spend more money on a call blocking phone.
According to the number code, 01133, the call is routed via Leeds. Is that correct?

They probably will not actually tell you, but they are the best for getting some peace and quiet.
If you do purchase a call blocker then can I advise you to do some research on them and get the best one that suits your purpose.
At the moment I believe there are the truecall unit, the CPR callblocker and also the new telephones coming out with nuisance call blocking facilities.
Personally I would not use the telephone blockers and they are very limited in what options they give you.

If it was spoofed it could have come via Timbuktu.

  • Nuisance calls

I recently changed my number and it's ex-directory. But I am still getting nuisance calls. It could be in the morning - International calling or withheld number. I telephoned BT and there is nothing they can do - the only thing is to buy the BT7610 Nuisance Call Blocker, the thing is this is a paid service. Also sometimes I do get calls from abroad, and sometimes withheld numbers are used by doctors' surgeries. You have to be polite when answering the phone. The withheld number rings about 3pm in the afternoon. I am not sure what this nuisance person wants but the only thing you can do with a number is ring it. Anyone had a similar problem - what to do?

Yes when I rang BT he did mention that numbers are recycled - I have caller display and I can bar calls only when I know the number. What is 3rd part call blockers -  CPR Call Blocker? I don't think I have this.
You have to buy one of those, and its fits between your phone line and your phone.
If you do a Google search for CPR Call Blocker, you should find it.
There is also a Truecall unit, but that is more expensive.
If you already have a phone that can bar numbers, then the only advantage of other call blockers, is that you can bar "withheld" , "International", and "Unavailable"
If you want to block all withheld calls at network level, then you have to pay a monthly fee (£4.75) to BT, for Anonymous Call Rejection.
Callers then get a message asking them not to withhold their number.

  • Nuisance calls since joining BT

Since joining BT the number of nuisance calls from call centres, India and sales reps has increases 100%. I swap to BT from Sky in June, yet whilst with Sky I did not receive any unsolicited calls.
Registered with BT for TPS and exdirectory listing.
If I did not have this problem with Sky, are BT selling my information to companies? It appears so!

    dcwales2012 wrote:
Not sure I agree with this, when I received zero nuisance calls with Sky!
Well if you pop along to the SKY help Forums and enter Nuisance calls into the search box you will find plenty of SKY customers who were and are receiving nuisance calls..
I dont buy Pizzas but I still get plenty of leaflets through the door.
If you do want to stop these calls then at the moment it appears that you have to spend a bit of money, The BT6500 phone is supposed to work. I use a Truecall unit and that definitely works.
But it's no good just having a go at the tossers, (sorry call centre ops) you have to complain to the TPS (nearly as bad) and if its marketing calls then complain directly to the Information Commissioners Office
Hassle your local MP, let them earn there money
Truecall have reported this on their site:
Have your say about nuisance phone calls
Following a very determined campaign by Which? the Culture, Media and Sport Committee is planning to hold an inquiry into Nuisance Telephone Calls and Text Messages. The Committee is inviting written evidence from those who wish to contribute to the inquiry, and we expect that there will be a Select Committee hearing in the Autumn.
A number of MPs don't favour call blocking products like trueCall because consumers have to pay for them. It would be good if they heard from users of the technology telling them how effective it can be. If I'm worried about the anxiety and distress that repeated nuisance calls are having on my elderly mother then government action that may take years to become effective doesn't really help me, but a trueCall unit can be plugged in today and solve the problem immediately.
Our view is that elderly and vulnerable consumers should get subsidised call blocking technology - councils often provide free pendant alarm systems, why not call blocking?
If you'd like to have you say then you can send a short written submission in Word format to [email protected] (with "Nuisance Calls" in the subject line). Submissions should be received by Thursday 15 August 2013. You can find more information here.

  • Block a number

How do block an unwanted number?

No, blacklisting is not literally the same as call blocking.  The Galaxy and othes use blacklisting - an app (3rd party or part of the OS) has to allow the call to connect so it can use the caller ID to check the number against its allowed or disallowed list.  While it may mute the call during the list lookup, and then drip the call if it is in the block list, the call does have to go through to your handset for it to work.  A caller who blocks their caller ID defeats blacklisting software as it never gets the caller ID to use to lookup against its lists.
With true call blocking, your service provider intercepts the number at their swithes, and it is never allowed to go through to your handset.  Even a caller who blocks their caller ID will not go through, as the carrier's routing software always has access to the caller ID information, regardless of whether the caller blocked it or not.
No handset can execute a true call block - all they can do is use the caller ID to drop a call once it has connected.
P.S. for those who've never tried it, this is one advantage of google voice - GV has a spam filter where you can add callers you wish blocked.  For those, the Google Voice system identifies them when they try to call, and simple hangs up on them instead of ringing the call through to your handset.  That also means they are blocked on any and all numbers you forward your GV number too, not just one particular handset.  Personally, I wish the cell service providers would just enable an analogous feature on your account web page - they could do so if they wished.

  • Hi All can anyone help me, I have a Iphone 4s and I'm currently recieving nuisance calls via a blocked number is there anyway I can stop my phone accepting blocked numbers? Cheers

Hi all I'm Currently recieving Nuisance Calls via a Blocked number is there anyway I can stop my Iphone accepting Blocked Numbers? Thanks

There is a way! I'm very happy to share this and hope it helps those who find themselves plagued, as I was.
I have been getting nuisance calls for months from some muppet, who hides his phone number before he calls at 3am. I need to keep my phone on, in case any of my immediate family have an emergency. I'm sure many have the same problem, just turning off the phone is not an option. I have been to two or three shops to ask the experts and none could offer me a solution. I was on the verge of tring to jailbreak my phone or even get rid of it to get an andriod one...That's how bad things had become.
Anyway, this is my solution, which I found by trawling through page after page on the internet, for ages and trying various other solutions first. I have an iPhone 4S and the operating system is 6.1.3 and I am in the UK, on Orange, or EE as we should now call it. I cannot promise it will help everyone, but it works for me.
Go to Settings, Do Not Disturb and switch this on. Underneath here, go to Notifications, then Do Not Disturb again. Then Scheduled and set the times you want the restrictions to start and end. For example, I use 7pm to 8am, so that I know I won't get nuisance calls during this period, but whatever times work for you. Underneath, it says Allow calls from and you can select your favourites. If you haven't saved any of your contacts as Favourites, do so, it's very easy. Just go to contacts, open one and underneath the number there is a button to Add to favourites. Repeat for all close friends and family you want to be able to reach you at any time. All your favourites should be allowed to call. I think you can have 50 numbers in the favourites. But any unknown caller should be simply sent to voicemail.
Apple have had some previous issues with the Do Not Disturb feature and to be honest this didnt work 100% of the time for me. If you find the same, don't give up. I suggest you do as I did at this point and use an app called Call Bliss, which seems to have cracked it. (I have NO connection to them and it's no skin off my nose if you use this app or not). There may be other apps that do the same, or even better for all I know. You have a free one day trial then it's £3 if you want to continue to use it. For me, £3 to solve the problem was money very well spent. If you need this app, download it, then do as suggested above to the point where it says Allow calls from and this time you select Bliss Exceptions. Follow the instructions in the app.
There are two modes, I use suppress mode, which allows all calls to get through except those from unknown callers and those specified by you. I believe the other mode blocks all calls, except those you specify. Please note, the app only works when the iPhone is locked. Your lock might come on after the phone is not used for 5 minutes or so, or you can lock the phone by single clicking the on/off button (not holding it down).
I hope this helps anyone as much as it has done me.

  • Call drop while talking long distance and strange number in log

Talking to relative in NY, call dropped with no dial tone after that.  Unplugged all phones, checked the connection box.  Dial tone came back after about 15 minutes.  Checking the digital phone log revealed that {edited for privacy}was listed as being called 7 times during the time of no dial tone.  Looking at the log again showed that {edited for privacy} was called eight times yesterday.  About a call a minute to this number.  Have no idea what this number is.  It seems that everytime the calls are dropped, this is the number in the log.  What is happening?

The alarm system checks out OK, strange number was just the system making the regular 28 day call.  Calls are still dropping, mostly after talking for a long time.  Can call the number back immediately and get connected.  Dial tone is not missing for these latest incidents, althought it was missing once in the past.   Also have an answering machine that  clicks at random as if someone is picking up a phone.  Answering machine is set to 4 rings and digial voice answering is set to 6 rings.  The whole system worked fine when installed, now is a constant problem.  Going to start disconnecting things and probably run a wire from the box directly to one phone.  Is there a tracer that can be hooked up to monitor the line?

  • How can I block a number that calls me persistently every single day but only shows 3458  it does not show the full 10 digit

how can I block a number that calls me persistently every single day but only shows 3458  it does not show the full 10 digit so on your block page will not let me block it!!!  So frustrated and I am not answering it with all the hackers out these days I don't want to give them access to my phone.

        @lottsandy
I can understand your frustrations and concerns with receiving these unknown calls!  I would love to assist you with preventing these types of calls.
Sounds as though you're receiving some type of telemarketing call.  Although you're unable to add the shorter numbers to your call block list, you can definitely add your number to the National Do Not Call registry http://1.usa.gov/1whONxp.  I hope this will help prevent those unwanted calls.  Thanks!

  • How do I block my number when calling someone

How do I block my number when I call someone?

You need to request that to your carrier.  Only they can hide your number from the Caller Id feature. Its not sometihng you can do on your phone.
With that said, what does this have to do with Appleworks?   Apple works is an old defunct Office suite, like iWork, and Ms Office.  I'll request this be moved to the iPhone forum.

  • How or can i block a number calling me

how to or can i block a number calling my i phone 4.
i am on o2 ireland network.

Even a $30 cellphone can block voice or txt from unwanted callers, why Apple missed this feature is a total mistery for me.
The only working solution I found is:
    - make a file with Garageband (some seconds of full silence);
    - send it to iTunes;
    - download it on the iPhone's Ringtones;
    - save the callers in your Contacts;
    - use that silent ringtone as a specific ringtone for the unwanted calls, but only after you saved the callers in your Contacts of course!
But still ...you can't set the iPhone to not Vibrate for those specific callers...

  • Block my number when calling out

I just used *67 to call a 800 number and this did not work?   Why?

You cannot block 800-877-888-900 numbers with that feature.
Companies pay for these numbers and harvest the callers. The phone company (Verizon) should have known that.
    Good Luck

  • Call block for specific number

how can i block a call through my app.....

You could try assigning that phone number to a silent ring tone, then you would not hear it ring and it will go to voice mail. Then just delete the message if you want nothing to do with that caller.

  • Toll fraud traffic pumping on a Call manager express and unity express with an 800 toll free number.

I have a customer with a call manager express and a unity express. They have an 800 toll free number that rings in to an auto attendant on the CUE. The problem is something called toll fraud traffic pumping. The caller, always from a different number, reaches the auto attendant by dialing the 800 number. They then somehow manage to keep the line connected for up to 12 hours by somehow staying in the auto attendant. I opened a TAC case and was informed that it is not in Cisco's hands to create a way to disconnect a call that is connected to the CUE. I need a way to have a call that stays in the auto attendant or voicemail after 3 to 5 minutes. I can't see a way to do it in the auto attendant script. Can someone help with a method that will disconnect the caller if they stay in the CUE for a period of time?

Thank you for the response Jaime.
That is what TAC told me. I am not familiar with TCL scripting and I have been looking at some guides on it. Any advice on a source to go to for assistance with that, possibly someone to help?
