BTHub Boosting

Hello, I live in part of an annex house setup, and the signal doesn't reach into the "barn", we have 2 lines going into the property, at the same section, one has become far too expensive, so we're dropping it and sticking with BT.
Previous setup:
This rough diagram shows the annex setup. Blue is the other isp, and green is BT. I also put the rings to represent the reach of the signal.
Have available:
- 2 x 50m CAT6 external grade cables.
- 1 x BT Home Hub 3.0
- 2 x BT Business Hub 3.0
- 1 x "Other" router -- can't remember brand.
- 1 x Misc wireless booster (plug, with ethernet socket for internet connection, which boosts by creating a new wireless network)
I've currently changed it to (a) is a BTHomeHub3 so range of (a) is good, with good speed etc.
(b) meanwhile, uses the 50m cable and connect a lan port from (a) plugged into a BTBusinessHub3 lan port, and is set to bridge mode.
(b) has issues with connectivity though. It doesn't seem to be an issue with IP conflicts as there's no popup and issues like that, when the connection works, (b) is reasonable speeds etc, however it'll drop out every 30 minutes and not work for an hour.
I tried changing both of the router settings so that:
(a): Router IP is: 192.168.1.1, with the IP ranges being from 192.168.1.64 - 192.168.254.254, and subnet mask being 255.255.0.0
(b): Router IP is: 192.168.1.2, with IP Ranges being from 192.168.2.1 - 192.168.2.255, and subnet mask being 255.255.0.0, then Bridging mode enabled (I know that then ignores the IP Ranges).
Using the wireless booster, works fine, and again -- good speed, connectivity etc. However it's a very basic booster without any extra lan ports, which are used quite regularly.
In an ideal world I feel the BT Hubs can sync perfectly, so I feel I'm missing something.
I've had a brief search and the only issues I can seemingly find is that people have a spare different branded router, I would prefer to use BT Hubs only is possibe.
Thanks for reading,
Regards, Oscar.
PS: Also just to clarify: I have PCs, Macs, TVs, and phones connecting to the network, so custom software isn't ideal.

  • WiFi Tether Your Android Tablet to Your Cell Phone - LG Marquee Boost Mobile Example

    Greetings Earthlings and Android Fans....
Just posted this to my blog and wanted to share a text version here. Check it out if you're looking to tether your tablet to your cell phone. I tethered my Thrive to my Boost Mobile LG Marquee.
From:  Kaio's Klassroom: WiFi Tether Your Android Tablet to Your Cell Phone - LG Marquee Infrastruct...
Want to tether your tablet to your cell phone, but Ad-Hoc got you down?  How about trying this nifty little tweak that got me up in running in a jiffy!!
I recently got a new LG Marquee Prepaid Phone with Boost Mobile @Amazon and I really love it.  Only problem is, I was spoiled with my last phone because it was rooted to support Infrastructure tethering and I had no idea how difficult and unusual that was.  I've since done some research with my new Boost Mobile LG Marquee, and after a little trial and error (and some lucky Google searches) I have successfully tethered my LG Marquee to my Toshiba Thrive tablet!!!
    Here's what I did:
Mandatory Disclaimer - The following information is for informational purposes only.  Proceed at your own risk!!!  Rooting will void your warranty and could "brick" your phone if you do something wrong!!  So if you damage your phone, or any of your tech, that's on you.
NOTE: If you don't have an LG Marquee, just search "your phone model" + "root" and you should find plenty of information specific to your phone.  There's always people wanting to do the same thing you are, so it's just a matter of finding the information that's already out there.  Once your phone is rooted, come back here and start on Step 2.
Step 1 -- Root your LG Marquee (You do NOT need to root your Tablet)
The following information was taken from LG Cell Phones Blog and are for the LG Esteem, which is a generic root mod.
    > Enable USB Debugging on your LG Marquee: Go to Settings > Applications > Development > Enable Debugging and check the box.
    > Download and install the LG USB drivers at:  LG Cell Phones Blog You want the file "LGUnitedMobileDriver_S4981MAN32AP22_ML_WHQL_Ver_3. 2.1_2.exe"
    > After installing the USB drivers connect your phone to a PC.  On the phone, pull down the notification bar at the top of the phone's screen and click on USB Connected.  Set the phone to Internet Connection mode (CHARGE ONLY not Mass Storage).
    > Download "LG_Esteem_Root.zip"  at:  LG Cell Phones Blog.  Unzip the file and double-click on the run.bat file.
Note: Kaspersky Internet Security will flag this file as a Trojan: "Exploit.Linux.Lotoor.ag"  I don't believe this file is a Trojan, per se.  I believe it's required during the root process.  When I let Kaspersky eliminate the file, my phone wouldn't root.  So I decided to run the root program on a secondary computer, just in case.  I disabled Kaspersky temporarily on that computer, and ran the root zip and my phone rooted without a hitch.  I later scanned my phone with Webroot Security and AVG, and neither found any viruses on my phone, so I believe the process is safe.  Technically, rooting your phone probably does involve a Trojan hack, hence why Kaspersky flags that file.  However, I must reiterate to proceed at your own risk.
Just in Case -- How to Unroot Sprint LG Marquee:
Use root explorer and delete superuser.apk from the /system/app folder. Go to the Android market and download and install super user. Use root explorer again and delete su from /system/bin. Go to the market and uninstall super user.  Do a factory reset & you will be back to square one.
Step 2 -- Verify that you have properly rooted your phone with this nifty free app: Root Checker Basic
If you did everything right, you should get a message that says "Congratulations, this device has root access."  If you fail to get that message, go back to Step 1.
Step 3 -- Download the Android WiFi Tether for root users app
Currently, the only version of Android WiFi Tether that worked for me was 3.1-beta7.  The newest version doesn't work properly with tablets, so be sure to get 3.1-beta7.  Here's a link and QR code for easy access: WiFi Tether 3.1-beta7 apk
Step 4 -- Configure WiFi Tether app:
I've tried many settings, but these are the only ones that have worked.  Start the app and grant Super User Permissions.  Then Click Menu to get into the app's setting.  Inside the Settings, do the following:
    > Change Device Profile to: Samsung Galaxy S
    > Change Setup Method to: Netd (Master)
    > Enable WiFi Encryption: Check box to Enable
    > Change Pass Phrase to: any 13 digit password of your choice.
    > Change SSID to: any name of your choice.
    > Change Channel to: 4 (2427mhz)
    > Disable Update Check: Check box to Disable.
    > Click your phone's Back Arrow to Exit back to the app's Main Screen
    > Touch the WiFi button onscreen to start tethering.
    > Grant Super User Permissions
Note: If you get Error Code 67, Click Dismiss.  If you update, I don't know what will happen; my guess is it will disable the ability to tether.  But if I click Dismiss, my tethering is Enabled, and works perfectly.
Step 5 -- Grab Your Tablet & Start Tethering
    > Go to Settings > Wireless & Networks > Check the box to Enable WiFi > Click WiFi Settings > Under WiFi Networks, find the SSID for your tethering app that you entered in Step 4 above. > Click on the SSID of your tethering app > Enter the 13 digit Pass Phrase you created in Step 4 above and Click Connect.
That's it!  Congratulations -- your tablet should now be tethered to your cell phone!
Now that you're tethered to your cell phone, be smart, and DON'T download a ton of gigabytes.  Just be smart about it, and you should be fine.  Remember, tethering to your cell phone probably goes against the terms of service with your cell phone carrier, so DON'T abuse the privilege.
Now that you're the envy of all your friends, why not test your data speeds: SpeedTest App - FreeMy data speed test results with my Toshiba Thrive tablet tethered to my LG Marquee:
    Download:  855kbps   Upload:  302kbps
That's pretty great for a 3g no-contract cell phone with unlimited data.
    Happy tethering everyone!
    Go forth and Androidify!
    Hugs, Kaio

  • Does my mid 2011 macbook air have turbo boost?

what is turbo boost and does my mac have it? all answers are appreciated
    thnx guys

TurboBoost is an elevation of clock speed to help speed up certain tasks. It momentarily switches the processor to a single core running at a faster speed.  It does so in an effort to manage speed and energy efficiency.

Yes, your CPU does have it.

  • EvaluatingTteststand 4.2.1: Null pointer access violation (error 17502) when attempting to use a mixed-mode std::map / boost shared_ptr class contained in a DLL through an interface from a different DLL

    Hi there.
I have been working on a test system which will potentially have TestStand at its core, and downloaded/installed the 4.2.1 evaluation. Current details from the information dialog are:
    TestStand Engine version 4.2.1 (4.2.1.83)
    Sequence Editor Verison 4.2.1.83
The system will drive mobile radio devices using RS232 serial interfaces, usnig a variety of serial protocols (Hayes, and a couple of proprietary binary protocols for other work).
We already have in existence a soak tester, written in VS2005 with MFC unmanaged DLLs and also managed DLLs, which are mixed up together to provide different aspects of the functionality required for the binary protocols.
    I have created:
    1. a "master wrapper" DLL for the constellation of other DLLs - this offers up a simple C-API interface which I hope TestStand will use. It's called "SerialSessionMgr.dll""
    2. a mixed managed / unmanaged "IJW" (it just works) DLL which wraps up the binary logging protocol control interfaces, which are entirely in managed C++/CLI: the "master wrapper" DLL calls into this through an unmanaged interface to create instances of the CLI-compiled class which interfaces to the underlying managed DLLs imlpementing the logging protocol. This is called "WinTseInterface.dll".
Before I started evaluating TestStand, I knocked up a test harness using CPPUnit / MFC, with which I was able to test SerialSessionMgr.dll and its' use of WinTseInterface.dll and verify they worked. The harness loads the DLL dynamically at run-time using AfxLoadLibrary() to try to emulate the way TestStand uses it.
    When we open a
    TSE session:
The SerialSessionManager makes a call to the
WinTseInterface.dll to "create" a logging instance. The instance is
created in a std::map which is held by the CWinApp derived class, this map
contains boost::shared_ptr of the class which works with a managed class. So we
    have a call trace: Client
    app->SerialSessionManager{TseStartSession()}->WinTseInterface{WINTSE_GetWinTseBridge()} - WINTSE_GetWinTseBridge()
just creates a new instance of the unmanaged class which interfaces through to
the managed CLI/C++ class beneath, and returns the address to the
    SerialSessionManager, which stores it.
The SerialSessioManager actually initialises the WinTseBridge using a method of a C++ pure virtual interface class to the class in the std::map in the WinTseInterface DLL
implements. The initialise call passes miscellaneous details and actually calls
"gcnew" to create the managed class which interfaces to the
underlying managed DLLs which implement the logging protocol.
My logs of the DLL loading as seen in VS2005 debug output are attached this message as PDFs
While trying to fix this, I have tried:
Enhancing the WinTseInterface DLL so it manually loads all the other assemblies in the logging system, including the managed portion of WinTseInterface itself (no effect)
All the different options for the way the C DLL adapter loads and unloads the DLL in the DLL adapter steptype in TestStand
I've even tried calling directly into the WinTseInterface DLL before trying any SerialSessionManager DLL calls to try to load the WinTseInterface DLL completely beforehand
and I cannot stop this exception.
It seems like the object is created in the WinTseInterface DLL OK (I have debugged the creation step which runs for WINTSE_GetWinTseBridge() and the object is created OK) when the SerialSessionManager makes the call, but when it calls the first managed function, which creates the managed object, the DLL is reloaded as managed - I suspect this causes the object to be destroyed or overwritten, and thus the call to initialise bombs with null pointer violation.
Have I done something obviously wrong, and what other approaches can I take?
Does TestStand 4.2.1 have issues with driving DLLs which use managed/unmanaged DLLs beneath them?
My nuclear option is to throw the WinTseInterface DLL out completely and wrap up the managed C++ CLI code in a new interface, entirely managed, and use the TestStand ".Net" adaptor to drive that, creating my step library to run to that directly. This isn't ideal as I have some co-ordination of the protocols which is implemented in the SerialSessionMgr DLL.
I hope someone can help. This one's low level, dirty and a stumper to me.
Many thanks to the NI community. This is my first posting!
    Solved!

    Hi there Ray.
First - many thanks for engaging with this thorny problem. Love the avatar BTW.
I've been using the C/C++ DLL adapter: the original premise of the Serial Session Manager DLL was to provide a simple C type functional interface, using simple data types, so that TestStand would be able to drive the underlying functionality easily through a single DLL.
Seeing as you've been kind enough to respond, I should explain the makeup of the DLLs a little more, I think.
The SerialSessionManager (SSMgr) DLL uses C++ and MFC internally. This is the DLL which TestStand calls into directly through the C/C++ adapter. This DLL does have one odd feature though - because the it uses the Windows Multimedia Timer (implemented in WinMM.dll) I had to artificially create a scenario where it would load the .Net mscoree DLL _before_ it loads WinMM.dll - (http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/329819/freelibrary-in-the-winmm-dlls-modu...), basically WinMM.dll's init code gets rather upset when .Net DLLs load, which causes the entire executable to be unloaded with subsequent crashes.
To work around this crash, the SSMgr has a single, completely empty, file which is compiled for CLR, effectively forcing a dependency into the DLL on the .Net subsystems and turning the DLL into a "IJW" binary. The resulting DLL doesn't actually have any executable managed .Net assemblies, but I'm guessing that it does contain enough .Net related stubs and information that when the DLL is loaded, mscoree.dll loads before WinMM.dll - and this means the system doesn't crash.
Now, on to the WinTseInterface DLL. My initial description of this little software system was done in something of a hurry.
This DLL is the C++/CLI "IJW" DLL which actually contains managed and unmanaged code. Underneath the WinTseInterface DLL is another system of (this time exclusively C++/CLI) DLL assemblies which implement the TSE protocol interpretation system.
When the SSMgr DLL needs to start a TSE protocol session, it calls a C-API function in the WinTseInterface which creates a new CWinTseBridge class. Here's the steps in a little more detail:
SSMgr DLL calls WINTSE_GetWinTseBridge(), passing in the name of the device which needs it (this is used to put the new WinTseBridge into a std::map in the WinTseInterface DLL) - this call runs just fine, and returns the address of the CWinTseBridge C++ object. This is stored in the SSMgr, because the CWinTseBridge class implements a pure virtual interface which is used by the SSMgr as a way of accessing the CWinTseBridge methods.
We now use the address from (1) to make a call to CWinTseBridge::Initialise(), passing some basic configuration details.
I've run VS2005 debug on the Sequence Editor when running the test, and done F11 step-throughs of the code loading each parameter in the Initialise() call onto the stack, and what appears to happen is that when the call is made, the whole lot steps off into oblivion (a reference to 0x00000000 is made, I think).
Do you think it's worth trying to get this approach to work? It would be useful to retain the control surface in the top of the SSMgr as there is co-ordination of the protocols within the logic of that component. If I move the Wintse control out into a separate managed DLL I may not have that co-ordination (this might be overcome with some design, as I've confirmed that it is possible to "reach into" the WinTseInterface DLL with TestStand and create and use managed objects from assemblies contained within).
Are there any known issues with this version of TestStand using C/C++ CLI IJW DLLs? I haven't found much out there on the web.

  • I am having ongoing connection problems with the Clash of Clans app which means that I lose battles, resources or boost times. This results in a loss of gems which I have purchased but will not be refunded as they will not accept responsibility.

Whilst playing Clash of Clans I will continually lose the internet connection. This means that I lose battles, resources, gold etc and lose boost times. I have informed Supercell who blame my internet connection even though the iPhone, laptop and TV all work fine so it is obviously a technical problem with their game and probably something to do with their last updates.
As I have purchased gems I feel that I should be compensated for my loss but they will not accept responsibility nor investigate the technical issue. The loss of connection occurs constantly with the game often freezing during replays or searching for battles. This is obviously not a connection issue.
What suggestions do you have to resolve this situation?

    Hi.
Thanks for the reply. I asked because I also wanted to see if others had encountered the same problem.
I have no problems with my internet connection as I run my TV, laptop and iPhone off the same connection with no problems. I believe that since the recent updates to the game this has caused the problem. The game often freezes, cancels out or returns me to the main game screen during battles or replays.
What I want to know is how do I get the game designers or owners to acknowledge my problem as at this time they keep telling me it is my internet that is a problem and not their game. How do they know this when they refuse to investigate. What can I do and who do I go to for support if they won't accept responsibility?
I am very grateful to you for replying but concerned that if this can happen to me then how many other gamers are losing out and paying for something that they are not going to receive.
    Many thanks.

  • Right Way To Boost Volume Of Your Music Before Synching

I'd like some guidance about boosting the volume of music on my ipod.
Do I import the CD, and THEN boost the volume prior to synching.
Or... Do I boost the volume of the songs FROM the CD before importing the CD? This is what I do now.
    Thanks a bunch, Craig

You do know that if you increase the volume of a song in iTunes, all you do is make it so that the maximum volume on the iPod is reached before the volume bar is at full? You're not going to make the iPod any louder by doing this. Indeed, what you may do by doing this is introduce distortion.
For example, if you increase a track's volume in iTunes by +100% then when it's on the iPod you will find that that track hits it's maximum volume level at about half volume, and turning the iPod up to full volume will not increase the volume any higher after this point. A track which has not had it's volume altered in iTunes will reach exactly the same sound level, although of course you will need to turn the volume level of the iPod to full in this instance.
    Try it for yourself.

I have the same errors occurring at an alarming rate. I did isolate it to the App Store. Specifically when checking for an update. I was hoping that you could test this out for me. Go to your console log and select all messages and then check kernel in the sender box (bottom left). I found that now is a good time to insert a marker. Now launch the app store then got to the update section. Select check for update.
Does this generate a series of the errors? I can reproduce the errors every time I "check for updates". The error would not show up when checking for updates in iTunes.
I did notice errors in both extending from CFNetwork

  • How can I boost the range of my router?

I have fios for phone/tv/Internet and use the Verizon MI24-WR router which works fine but my bedroom on the other side of the house doesn't get a signal. Any recommendation on improving the signal? I have the router in the office connected to the printer, PC and a"cable box" so moving the router would be a pain.
I have an old Linksys WRT54G that I could use as a booster but have no idea how to do that.
Does Verizon update router firmware? Replace older routers?

Firmware updates should happen automatically - login to  your router and from here http:\\192.168.1.1
    - advanbced - firmware upgrade to verify what version you have. From what I read routers are replaced based on issues you are having as well as your speed tier (75 Mb/s and up get the latest router)
I defer to the experts AFA extending the range of your WIFI please see http://forums.verizon.com/t5/Home-Networking/Actiontec-router-does-not-support-wireless-range-extend...

I have BT Infinity at home with the BT modem connected to the phone line and then to a BThub which delivers the wif signal. I have purchased an airport extreme to improve wi fi strength if how do I connect up to hub it states connect modem to WAN on back of Airport Extreme.
Instructions do not mention connection to BT Hub and the BT modem has only one output which you dicsonnect from Hub and connect to airport extreme leaving. Once you do this Hub has no signal.
    How do I rectify
    Paul

you can also set up the Airport extreme to extend the wireless by hitting the wireless tab in the airport menu then click the drop down menu to select extend
Apple's "extend" function is a proprietary setting that was designed to only work with other Apple routers.
It would be extremely unlikely that this setting would work with a BT product, or any other manufacturer's product for that matter.
But, I haven't tested this with a BT product...and I suppose anything is possible.
Still, I would be extremely surprised if this worked.
The AirPort Extreme might "join" the BT network if you try this......but the AirPort does not provide any additional wireless signal coverage when it "joins" a wireless network. In fact, it really does nothing when it "joins" a network except enable the USB port.

  • Does 802.11n give a speed boost on the iPad?

I did some testing to see if I'd get a speed boost by enabling 802.11n on my Belkin F5D8233-4 router, which supports 802.11n draft specification. I have Verizon FIOS with 25Mbps download/upload. I also have the Verizon router, which only supports 802.11b/g, and I can switch which router I'm connected to in order to compare speeds of 802.11n and 802.11g. All tests were done less than 3 feet from either router.
Bottom line is that the iPad doesn't get any speed boost by using 802.11n, at least by using speedtest.net to do the testing.
The test I used was with the speedtest app for the iPhone. I made the Belkin a pure 11n router, and ran that app from the iPad. So the connection had to be 802.11n. Then I connected the iPad to my Verizon router, which had to be 802.11g, and saw virtually no difference.
I did the same test with a Windows laptop from my job that supports 802.11n. It connected locally to the Belkin router at 72Mbps according to the internal utility. Testing using speedtest.net indicated that using the 802.11n connection on the Belkin was 50% faster than the 802.11g connection on the Verizon router. (About 30Mbps for Belkin/802.11n compared to 20Mbps for Verizon/802.11g for downloads).
But with the iPad, doing the same test (switching from Belkin router to Verizon router), the speed didn't change. It actually seemed a little slower when I was on 802.11n, but repeated tests showed some variability, and the average was about 19Mbps.
I realize that the overall speed for the iPad when I'm in my house will get throttled by the FIOS connection max of 25Mbps (although it's interesting that with my MacMini, and the Windows laptop, when connected via 100baseT, I get 30Mbps from FIOS when they promise 25Mbps!). But I can't get the good results from the iPad using 802.11n that I see with the Windows laptop. I'd like to try a local speedtest using the local LAN. I installed Speedtest MINI on the MacMini, enabling the Mac as a server, and the Windows laptop did 72Mbps on the local LAN. But Speedtest MINI requires Flash in the browser, so I can't do that test on the iPad. And the Speedtest app for iPhone doesn't let you pick a local URL for the server.
So I'm now pretty sure that 802.11n isn't really working right on the iPad with my Belkin router, in terms of delivering increased performance. I've read other posts where people have looked at the transmit rate from the router side, but I really wish I could look at the transmit rate from the iPad (like I do in Mac OS X, or in Windows) to verify.
To be sure, I'd like to run a speedtest on my local LAN from the iPad. Has anyone been able to actually do some kind of test that verifies the speed of an iPad connection on a local LAN, and does that verification from the iPad, and not the router?
And finally, has anyone ever done a test that verifies that 802.11n from an iPad delivers a speed boost compared to 802.11g? Are there specific requirements on the router side that need to be satisfied so that the iPad gets a boost? I've read elsewhere where someone said that you only get the boost if using Apple's Airport Extreme as the router (so that you can't really get 802.11n on a non-Apple router), and I think I saw someone say that the router has to support communication over 5.0Ghz for the iPad to be fast on 802.11n. Has Apple ever said what are the real requirements for the iPad to be faster on 802.11n versus 802.11g?

To the contrary, my experience is that the "G" standard on WiFi provided MUCH faster speeds than the "N" standard on Wi-Fi.  It makes no sense, I know, but it is true.
I was having horribly slow Wi-Fi speeds on my iPad2, despite a fast cable modem connection and a "N" generation Linksys wireless router (maybe 2-3 yrs old).  Was achieving speeds of only 1.3Mbs -- slow enough that you couldn't watch YouTube videos.  From hunting around on the web, I came across the suggestion to manually set the Wi-Fi router to the "G" standard (ie downgrade it from the faster "N" standard).  Remarkably, I did it and it worked like a charm.  I now get Wi-Fi speeds of about 12 or 13 Mbs, or 10x what I was getting before.  It is an easy fix.  And also I think the "G" standard is capable of 50Mbs so even though it is a slower and older standard, it is still way faster than anything you are likely to achieve as a home user.   I think there is some glitch or oddity in the iPad and iPad2 which can cause it to perform very poorly with older "N" standard WiFi routers.  New ones don't seem to have a problem.

  • Is there is signal booster I can use to get better reception for 3G on my ipad? My reception is between 1 (which doesn't work) and 3 bars and it never reverts to Edge. Thanks

Hi, I'm new to this new format for the forum so I may make lots of errors.
My 3G IPAD only gets between 1 and 3 bars when I use 3G at home which is a lot. When its at 1, I can't use my IPAD online at all. I have the original IPAD, 16G, with 3G. My operating system is 4.3.5.
I called Apple support and they connected me to ATT and they didn't know what the problem was. I told them it didn't revert to Edge and they said that's because it can't find the signal. They said I could get a new SIMS card if it didn't work in town but yesterday I took it to town and it got between 3 and 5 bars so I didn't pick up the SIMS card yet.
So I was wondering if anyone knew of a signal booster that will increase the 3G signal so at least it stays off of 1 where I can't use it. I use this mostly at home because my internet connection keeps dropping too so I rely on my 3G 50 percent of the time.
Or does anyone have any other ideas?
    Thank you.
I used to be mpoinar but that account is no longer accepted here so I had to create a new one. sigh.
    Martha

Hi, I just watched the video for the Microcell and you have to use your broadband connection to get it to work and the problem is my broadband connection is down the times I'm using my 3G. That's why I use it, because my broadband connection is not working so much of the time.
    Any other suggestions? :-)
    Martha

  • Is there a way to boost Safari? Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Safari 5.1.7 is very slow, almost dead. Thank you.

Is there a way to boost Safari? I'm using Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Safari 5.1.7 which has become very slow, almost dead. Many thanks!

If Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
    and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security, (including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here: http://www.opendns.com/home/nobloat ) and further independent information can be read here:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57338784-263/free-dnscrypt-tool-enhances-ma c-web-security/?tag=mncol;txt
    and here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1146064/troubleshootdns.html?t=234
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network:please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/best_practices/#your_network and follow the advice given.
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
    killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The later versions of Flash 10.1 onwards appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.
For this and other reasons Apple switched their websites to HTML5 in January 2011:
    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/01/26/apple_revamps_its_public_website_u sing_html5.html
For Snow Leopard/Lion users this should also be read:

  • I am trying to find a portable cell phone signal booster

I am away from electricity and there are too many spots where I need a signal boost in order to do my work.
Does anyone have any recommendations for anything that I can use to boost my iphone signal so I can use Siri easier to dictate but runs on battery power and not an electrical outlet or car charger?
    Thank you.

    @macnpchz
There no portable cell boosters available, but you can ask your cellphone provider about mini towers for your home.  If you have AT&T, they use MicroCell.  I currently use this at my home and I love it.

    - Windows 7 Ultimate with Service Pack 1 (x64).
My problem precisely and concisely is that I am NOT happy nor satisfied with the performance of my laptop at all, and I need your assitance and advises to boost my laptop's performance.
I do NOT use my laptop for games at all. Also, I do NOT use my laptop for working with graphics at all.
I am using my laptop for surfing the Internet (Chatting, Reading, Watching Videos...etc).
Also, I have Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1 TB USB 3.0/2.0 Ultra Portable External Hard Drive, from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0041OSQ9S) that I use for Software development (Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 and Vmware) purposes.
Though I don't have any heavy applications running on my laptop such as (Norton AntiVirus...etc), I feel that my laptop is not fast. BTW, there's no viruses or malicious software that are affecting my laptop or its memory.
Therefore, I want to ask you, what can I do to improve the performance of my laptop and increase its speed ?
I would greatly appreciate your inputs.
Thanks for your consideration of my request, and I very much look forward to hearing from you soon !

Once again, I am NOT happy nor satisfied with the performance of my laptop at all, because it is not fast, and I am not impressed at all by its poor performance. Truthfully, I regret so much that I have bought it.
I can conclusively that I am having an extremely unpleasant experience with my laptop, and I wish to get rid of it as soon as possible.
More than 7 years ago, I bought a desktop PC (Pentium 4: CPU 2.5 GB & 2 GB RAM), I swear it has the same performance with my current laptop.
Do you feel me? Do you understand why I am sad, not satisfied and unhappy about my laptop?
I paid a lot for this laptop, and I bought extra RAM, and I bought external hard drive (To keep my hard drive empty)…. What is the result? Just a very normal laptop performance…
When I open two word documents files with a movie (Windows Media Player or any other player) and I try to open one small PDF file, then, it will take more than 15 seconds to open the file…. Why on earth this is happening?
When I work with Vmware, Windows Virtual PC, Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 or Hyper-V… The laptop becomes very sluggish with totally unacceptable performance, it is just dying, and when you open a PDF file or word document, it will take about 30 seconds to open.
Do you feel me? Do you understand why I am sad, not satisfied and unhappy about my laptop?
Both application load time and process response time are embarrassment.
When I swtich on my laptop, it takes about 3 minutes to display Login-Screen. When I enter the password, it takes about 30 seconds to open properly though there is no startup programs (Programs runs when the OS starts) at all.

    You wrote “Run CCleaner”.
Could you please provide me more details? I mean: Could you please give me a link of the specific tool that you have mentioned?
Also, you asked me “Is your drive well defragged”?
Well, I think yes. Sometimes I right clicked on the drive C:  -> Properties -> Tools -> Defragmentation.
Also, you wrote “Make sure the power settings are configured for optimal performance.”
Could you please provide me steps and instructions to do so?
    @Q-Ball   &   @Ideasmiths
Your suggestion about buying SSD is very logical, However, I am not going to buy it. Simply because the whole laptop is not worthy and somehow I believe that the feeling of 'slow' speed will never stop. I already did a mistake and bought extra RAM for this useless laptop…. What happens ….nothing really has changed.
Also, I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed, and I don’t have fingerprint reader feature.

You wrote “When you say not fast, can you precisely define what you mean?”?
Please read the first parts of my post.
You wrote “check whether you are consuming up all your CPU resources”?
Yes, I do that. About 30% CPU Usage and 2,9 GB PF Usage. My laptop has never approached 100% load.

I am using iPhone 4 from the last one year and went dead and got it replaced by paying Rs.12500/- to Nyasa Sion Koliwada Mumbai Service Provider but now again after 38days the problem has started, what do i do? Is this is the quality & service we boost? On visiting the store we get only one reply you may write to Apple directely. we have the similar kind of problem with iPad which is being used by my wife Mr.Neelam Vij and paid Rs.16000/- to get it replaced within a year & 6months use. so in totality we have paid Rs.28500/- + Rs. 3000/- diagnostic charges.

Moreover, we have no information to contact whom. even the replace set has a warranty of only three month which further confirm that Apple itself is not confident wheather product will last after replacement for more then three month. Such kind of happening do not encourage anyone to recomend this product to anyone. Would appriciate a faster response to our problem if someone from Apple is going to read this email.
    Thanks & Regards
