BTRFS on root - cryptsetup problem

Hi sorry to bother you but I have problem.
I converted root filesystem from reiserfs to btrfs (compression-force), after that I recreated with mknod /dev/console and /dev/null.
I downloaded btrfs mkinitcpio and it works without any problem.
When I used my vanilla kernel I don't know why but crypttab is not accessed (system booting hangs before init of rc.sysinit , it hangs for approx. 10 seconds and after that it jumps to the console and I can login.
But it seems that rc.local and /etc/crypttab weren't applied. (It didn't ask me for password).
I have to do it manually (cryptsetup luksOpen, after that mount /dev/mapper/... and it works).
Any clue what could be difference? With reiser it worked without any problem, maybe some prob with changed rights because of btrfs?
I know that it's my kernel and it's not supported but I have to ask.
In my kernel I don't use ramdisk.
Thank you for help.

Yes I did, if I wouldn't arch kernel wouldn't work.
I have boot folder on reiser partition so it's not the reason. And for kernel which doesn't use ram disk is not mkinitcpio needed.
I don't find solution yet.

  • BTRFS on root recommand

    Hi,
I want to reinstall my archlinux and want to ask if the use of btrfs is recommand or at least nothing dangerous (data is safe on the server I just don't want to have issues trying to boot)?
I did already on try installing archlinux with the archboot image and btrfs as root and became:
    can't find fsck.btrfs error
    mounted root
    /sbin/init does not exist
youre on youre own to fix this
Have I forgotten to merge the btrfs package?

I use btrfs on root and home and ext2 on boot and have no problems. Yes, the boot process shows me this "fsck not found" error every time but other than that I've had no problems whatsoever. I've never encountered your error. In fact, fsck is not as necessary as a lot of people think it is, and in case of emergency I still can manually use btrfsck. I guess in the future the whole thing will be properly implemented, but as of now, I don't see any problems using btrfs in its current state. However, keeping backups, just in case, is probably a good idea -- but then, you should do that anyway, btrfs or not.
That being said, I'm not sure if I would actually use it on a server or anything where I value data security over everything else. On the other hand, I would probably use FreeBSD with ZFS on that in the first place instead of Arch.

  • Dreamweaver 8 root site problem

I recently upgraded to version 8 from MX. My root site is on
my network storage, and never had a problem with MX. My image paths
are all wrong and now have just broken link placeholders. After
doing a little resaerch, I mapped a drive to my site folder, and
now the images are back IN DREAMWEAVER. My problem now is when I
pre-view a page in a browser (F12), the image links are broken
again...... any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Actually, the two dots mean "go up a level". The first link
    is a root
relative link, and it's the leading slash that refers to the
    root.

It would happen in both, if you have temp files disabled in
    both. No doubt
you had them enabled in MX and not in DW8. Check your Preview
    in Browser
    preferences.

    Folks,
Hello. I am installing Oracle 11gR2 RAC using 2 VMs (rac1 and rac2) whose OS are Oracle Linux 5.6 in VMPlayer according to the website http://appsdbaworkshop.blogspot.com/2011/10/11gr2-rac-on-linux-56-using-vmware.html

  • Root password problem in Solaris 10

    Hi All,
Have anyone noticed this problem before?
I've set the password on Solaris for the root user as "rootroot123". However, I'm able to login with any password that starts with rootroot (i.e. rootroot*)...
    My solaris version is:
    SunOS mynode01 5.10 Generic_138888-03 sun4u sparc SUNW,Netra-240
Is there a bug report in Solaris regarding this or any way to solve it?
    Thanx,
    Mahmood

I think by default Solaris uses CRYPT_DEFAULT=__unix__ which limits you to 8 characters.
in order to have more than 8 usable characters in your passwd, then you must use "md5"
    CRYPT_DEFAULT=md5
this is located in : /etc/security/policy.conf
I think you may want to change the password length in /etc/default/passwd
PASSLENGTH= (default=6) change it to something of your liking.
be sure to do a little more research on the exact steps, but this is what you are loking for. im just going by memory here.

  • Oracle 11gR2 RAC: Running the script root.sh problem

    Folks,
Hello. I am installing Oracle 11gR2 RAC using 2 Virtual Machines (rac1 and rac2 whose OS are Oracle Linux 5.6) in VMPlayer and according to the tutorial
    http://appsdbaworkshop.blogspot.com/2011/10/11gr2-rac-on-linux-56-using-vmware.html
I have been installing Grid Infrastructure using runInstaller from step 1 to step 9 of 10 in both VM rac1 and rac2.
Now, I am running the script root.sh in VM rac1 and rac2 as below:
    [root@rac1 /]# /u01/app/grid/root.sh
    Output:
    CRS-4123: ohasd is starting
    FATAL: Module oracleoks not found

    'UpdateNodeList' was successful.
    [root@rac1 /]#

    Start of resource "ora.asm_init" failed.
    Failed to start ASM.
Failed to start Oracle Clusterware Stack.
    [root@rac2 /]#
As we see the output above, rac1 and rac2 get the same problems. in addition, rac2 fails to start ASM and Clusterware stack. Thus, I have 2 questions:
First, the common problem for rac1 and rac2 :
1)Module "oracleoks, oracleadvm, oracleacfs" not found
    2)/dev/asm/.asm_ctl_spec not detected
    3)ADVM/ACFS installation failed
Do the above 3 factors affect Grid and DataBase Installation later ? If yes, how to solve these problems ?
Second, how to start ASM and Clusterware stack in rac2 ?
    Thanks.

    you have 2 options:
    1. OEL 5.6 comes with 2 kernels, the original Red Hat, and Oracle UEK, you can choose not to use UEK
or the one i would recommend:
    2. Upgrade Grid Infrastructure,
*11.2.0.3.1* (patch 13348650, released about a 1 month ago) supports ACFS on UEK (starting with 2.6.32.200 IIRC)

  • BTRFS RAID0 root filesystem Kernel Panic (EFISTUB)

I'm attempting to boot a btrfs raid0 via UEFI, but I'm getting a Kernel panic:
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
    Kernel Offset 0x0 from 0xffffffff01000000
The raid is configured such that two partitions of identical size (/dev/sda2 and /dev/sdb2) are striped via mkfs.btrfs -d raid0. The partitions mount fine in a Live environment, but trying to load this via the kernel command line fails absolutely fantastically. The EFI system partition resides at /dev/sdb1, and it contains the kernel images and initrd.
    My Kernel command line is:
    /vmlinuz-linux root=PARTUUID=<PARTUUID of /dev/sdb2> rootfstype=btrfs rootflags=device=/dev/sda2,device=/dev/sda2,subvol=__active/__root initrd=/initramfs-linux.img ro
This is set up via an efibootmgr entry. I have successfully run several systems with single btrfs disks as root devices, but this raid0 refuses to work. I have added 'btrfs' to the HOOKS array (immediately before fsck) and have also tried with 'btrfs' in the MODULES array. Neither have made any change in the message produced.
    Any and all help appreciated.
EDIT: This might just be a motherboard incompatibility, as I can boot the kernel from the EFI shell just fine.

    I've solved the mystery.
Well, I realised that I had another serious issue with filesystem (that was mentioned on the Archlinux's news https://www.archlinux.org/news/filesyst … equired-1/ and https://www.archlinux.org/news/the-lib- … a-symlink/ ) so I had to figure out which packages were using /lib to remove them. Also I had to disable pacman's signature checking system because as I said before it didn't seem to work.
After removing every package that happened to use /lib  at that time I eventually could perform the command "pacman -Syu" and later on "mkinitcpio -p linux" worked out.
    Thanks DSpider.

  • Strange and fatal file name / root folder problem. Please help!

Hi there. I wonder if anybody could help me!
I am using CS4 but this problem still occurred in CS3. When I
set up a new site in Dreamweaver I go through the usual motions
selecting the local root folder and images folder. Then when I go
into the new site it creates an initial site cache as usual. After
this (when I try to upload anything for example) the cache seems to
have disappeared (i.e. all local files disappear in DW). It tells
me that I should go through setting up the site process again but
this only ends up going round in circles!
Curiously, when I look at my HD in finder, Dreamweaver has
created a new folder named "Macintosh HD" and inside it follows the
exact same file structure as the "real" local files except the
website files do not exist inside the root folder!
I can not understand what is going on here. I suspect it
might be something to do with the locations of files and relative /
    absolute linking on the HD?
Please help if you can! Thanks.

What is the NAME of your hard drive? Does it (or any
    intermediate folder)
contain unusual characters (apostrophes, parentheses, etc.)?

  • Site root links problem in Dreamweaver CS3

I am having trouble with links relative to site root when I
work on my localhost with Dreamweaver CS3.
I am building a site with PHP, MySQL using the WAMP server. I
    have a page ( www.site.com/index.php ) that I want to copy to
    sub-directories (e.g. www.site.com/about/index.php ) so I want to
make the copying as painless as possible by using site root
relative links (e.g. /about/index.php ). It works on the internet
    but NOT on localhost.
Why is this? What can be done? Is there a fix if this is a
bug? This seems like such a simple thing but it is such a
    problem.

    > Why is this?
Because when your (local) webserver see's that you are
    directing it to the
ROOT, it goes to ITS root, not the website's root (e.g.,
    htdocs or Inetpub).
You can get around this by using virtual hosts (google it).

No, that's not a local vulnerability.  A local vulnerability would be a user account escalating privelidges.   This is considered "Game Over".  If an attacker has physical access to your machine, then disabling this would mean nothing.   When I forget the root password, I just boot any live distro, mount /dev/hda1 or wherever I can find /etc/, and just edit the passwd file.  Hell, you can even do it with an old slack install CD, or a mini distro that you can fit on a credit card sized CD.

  • [SOLVED] BTRFS Subvol Root Mounting Incorrectly ... Systemd-tools UpD

Since updating udev to systemd-tools, the initramfs dumps me into a shell, stating that the rootfs was mounted, but /bin/systemd could not be found.
I'm unsure if rootflags=,subvol=arch, ssd is being ignored, or if the btrfs subvolumes are coming online just a hair after the check before switch_root occurs.
Whatever the case, the initramfs mounts my entire btrfs volume to /new_root, rather than the subvolume on which I have my root filesystem.  In other words, ls /new_root from the shell shows all my subvolumes.  Umounting /new_root and remounting it with mount /dev/disk/by-label/arch -o subvol=arch, ssd and then exec env -i /usr/bin/switch_root /new_root /bin/systemd works, however.
Of course, I looked around and found this post: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=136913
Adding a rootdelay=3 doesn't seem to do the trick, though in that post, /dev/disk/by-uuid/UUID is used instead of /dev/disk/by-label/LABEL.  Seems quirky to me.

I appreciate any pointers anyone can offer to get my system booting as it was before the systemd-tools update.
EDIT:  All is not bad, however.  Since the update to systemd-tools, my Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive is correctly recognized upon connection without rebooting as it previously required.

I'll try removing the leading comma and report back, falconindy.  Checking the btrfs_root Wiki page, I can see that the leading comma is now removed.  Strangely enough, it had always worked before.
ataraxia, I did rebuild the initramfs image, per the instructions, but good looking out.  I've missed silly things like this before.

  • Action script with reference to root causing problems in Captivate

    Hi All,
I just inserted an animation into Captivate and it seems to
be working as intended; however, i receive a warning stating that
action script referencing "root" may cause the Captivate project
not to work properly or at all.
Has anyone experienced such a problems coming from action
script reference. It appears to be working fine, so I'd rather not
touch it if I can get away with it.

If you run into issues there is a technote on Adobe.com that
    will advise you
on how to remove or work around using _root references.
    Ideally you would
never refer to _root at all.

  • Root.sh problem grid infrastructure 11g

    Hi all,
I am about to install grid infrastructure 11g (11.2.0.1) on RHEL5.5 64 bit where i use VMware platform which is VMware server 2 on Windows2008 Server. I am pretty sure that i followed the installation instructions but i cannot get rid of the following error which occurs while i am running the root.sh.
You can also find errors in the oraagent_oracle.log and orarootagent_root.log at the end of the post. There are communication errors at the end of the both log files but they dont give any clue to me or my knowledge is not enough to understand why crs is complaining.
maybe this is a known issue or somebody can understands what grid infrastructure is angry about. thanks for any effort.

    H,
in 11.2.0.2 you can simply continue running root.sh, since it uses internal checkpoints.
11.2.0.1 is a little bit more difficult, since you need to deconfigure the run (rootcrs.pl -deconfig -force) to restart root.sh.
Then when you did that, see this note for the further steps, how to call the missing assistants:
How to Proceed from Failed 11gR2 Grid Infrastructure (CRS) Installation (Doc ID 942166.1)
