"Bubbles" a poor choice for technical issues

An example (I hope) shows why this is true better than anything I could say:
Software Update crashes? What to do?
On the plus side, the new format doesn't mangle crash reports by interpreting crash text formatting as html tags, so that much is a step in the right direction.
However, the fixed size, narrow bubbles mean the readability of almost any long lines of text pasted into a post user content will be greatly diminished. If this was just a chat site & all the posts user content we read were normal text paragraphs, all the soft line breaks would not be so much of a problem. But this is a site purposed for technical discussions, not social chit-chat. Or at least it used to be.
Please give this some thought & provide some way (automatic or otherwise) to relax the formatting so where appropriate we can expand content into the otherwise wasted white space to the left & right of the page.

That is a rather large bubble
The basic editor could also do with a button to format code into a fixed pitch font?

  • CD Got Stuck and Got Very Poor Support for this issue

I Have a mac mini Intel Duo core. This is the second time My cd is getting Stuck.
First Time It was my mac OSX Recovery Disk. I inserted My disk and restarted the system before i got the cd loaded. The Cd Got Stuck. None of the standerd recovery procedures worked. I called up support and took the system to apple care solution They took a day to take it out.
This Time I Inserted an audio cd during Screen saver mode (Forrest Screen Saver) and when resumed to work I found out the CD was not recognised. I have Installed the eject shortcut on the top right menu bar. When i clicked eject after a long wait Nothing happend. The Drive was listed in Utilities> Disk Utility But I was not able to Eject. When I restarted by clicking the mouse button also nothing worked. Once I have restarted I have No drives Listed.
By Callon Customer Support I tried all trouble shooting steps again. Now I will Have to take my mac mini back to service it mak take a day to fix it.
I think cd gets stuck then we insert the cd in screen saver mode or insert it and restart before cd is recognised. Can Some one try out these scenaios and tell me whether my diag is right?
reg Apple support It is very poor (Compared to this dell has very good support. The are having their tech ppl coming home with all possible replasement components that might have gorn wrong trouble shoot fix the issue do replacements and leave the place compared to this apple care is just very poor ). One has to carry his mini to authorised service every time this occurs and wait untill the support ppl ejects it for me (This gives me no Option other than handing over my pc and wait without one for a day). The slot drive does not have a manual eject hole accessable to end user (Thats a cool design flaw).
In short Apple Service is very poor all arround the world
Mac Mini (Intel)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Siva,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You just happened to have gotten some bad support by fluke. On the whole Apple's support is rated better than Dell worldwide:
    http://forums.maccentral.com/wwwthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=general&Number=6 18987
There are a couple articles which I recommend reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106752
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58641
The latter article may not explain directly why your last couple of disks failed to eject, but if you used a non-standard disk, or one that had an adhesive label on it which suddenly got into the drive, it might have affected the ability of the drive to eject properly.
Yes occasionally you do get bad support, and occasionally a repair is flawed, but that's why when you call AppleCare and you have a problem with a repair, I recommend you speak to customer relations. They'll set you right.

  • Troubleshooting Book or Manual MACOSX 10.3.9 for technical issues?

I am looking for a book on MACOSX 10.3.9 that would show me how to troubleshoot problems. EX: Finder (not responding) - What would be the choices that I might have to fix the problem and in what order? Even if I have to use the Terminal program.
    Thanks,

  • Airport Express, a poor choice for transmiting music from iTunes to my receiver

Looks like I just wated $99 for this  devise.   I got rid of my extra iPod which I used to play music on my stereo system.   However, the wirelss Airport express device has frequent interruptions.   Each time someone walks or moves anywhere in the house the transmission gets interrupted.  Sometimes it get interrupted or pauses for a couple of second even without any movement.   Looks like I'm going back to an iPod or CD's to play music reliably.

How do I know if there is wifi interference?
    iStumbler.
I have not connected this device via cable to my router.  I don't want to do it because the router is in one room and the device sits next to my TV and receiver in an adjacent room and I don't want wires dragging on the floor or walls.
You could always use Powerline adapters.
You don't have to turn this device to a router for it to play music from your computer to your stereo.
No, you don't, but it is usually a better router than ISP provided routers. If for whatever reason it doesn't work properly there's always the return grace period.

  • Where do I leave feedback for technical services received?

Need to know the location on the website to leave feedback for technical services received.

Hello Brian, We recently had a not-so-positive and then a positive experience with technical customer service.  Out of the blue, we received messages that my daughter was at 75% of her data usage.  She has 2 GB and has had that for 2 years without ever, ever going over.  First call got us to Brian, who was very rude and simply said that Verizon is never responsible for the charges on a cell phone – it is always the customer’s fault.  So, I asked for a Supervisor, which got me Thomas.  Unfortunately Thomas had no clue and tried to tell that the charges were due to the update ESO8.  Our phone had ESO7 and we didn’t update.  He again was not helpful as he basically didn’t understand or want to.  Then we got Annabell at Apple.  She was very nice and talked me through the issue and possible problems with using that much data in basically 8 days.  She then called Holly at Verizon who actually looked at the schedule of data usage and determined it to be downloads on specific days at specific times.  Times like 16:48:57 to 17:48:57 – no one has conversations or uses data like that, but a download will.   And downloads, of course, didn’t happen on wi-fi.  Holly was wonderful.  Helped us clean up the phone as we couldn’t tell exactly what was downloaded.  Floated us 3 more GB of data until 10/8 when we go back to 2 GB.  Jeff and Thomas should never be allowed to talk to your customers again.  I was on the phone 2 full hours.  If I felt I had a choice I would drop Verizon in a heartbeat.  Shame on them.  That’s it.  Let me know if you’d like any additional information.  Thank you for your consideration.  Peggy

  • ASA 60 minute inactivity timeout - Poor choice?

    Hello Friends!
We had an issue the other day where doing backups through the firewall (don't ask) caused the "control" session to timeout while the backups were still going on over the "data" connection.  This broke the backup about two hours into the job.  My first thought was that the backup solution vendor should implement some kind of tcp keepalive for the control connection.  A packet capture showed they indeed were --  after 2 hours!  Ah ha!  Busted!  How could they choose such a poor choice of TCP keepalive timer for their application that would not be compatible with the 60 minute inactivity timer that so many firewall vendors use (Cisco, Juniper, Checkpoint and Fortinet all use a default 60 minute inactivity timer for TCP)?
Well, a colleague of mine pointed out that there is actually an old RFC that covers this.  RFC 1122.  It says:
Keep-alive packets MUST only be sent  when no data or acknowledgement packets have been received for the  connection within an interval.  This interval MUST be configurable and  MUST default to no less than two hours.
Now I know that RFC is old (October 1989), but that's all I could find.  Is there something that supercedes that?  Maybe common sense perhaps?  I understand not wanting to fill up your connection table because of mis-behaving applications, but I'm just looking for ammunition to use against the backup solution vendor.  Surely they're going to point to this RFC.
    Thanks!
ASA(config)# timeout conn ?configure mode commands/options:  0:0:0 | <0:5:0> - <1193:0:0>  Idle time after which a TCP connection state                                will be closed, default is 1:00:00  <0-0>                         Specify this value to never time out

    Hi,
Certain application behaviour sometimes forces our hand to reconfigure the "timeout" values for certain customer connections. Though this has been pretty rare in my own case atleast.
I would imagine that any kind of keepalive would be something that would be constantly transmitted on the connection that needs to stay up and it would certainly be something that the application handles itself.
I did a quick try on my home ASA to check if this could be corrected by the ASA wihtout globally affecting all connections through the ASA and it seems to work fine
Here is the configuration I did
    Where
TIMEOUT = Is simply the name for each configuration (ACL, Class-Map and Policy-Map) that I chose
x.x.x.x = Is the destination IP address for which I want to create these rules for
LAN = Is my ASAs "inside" interface
access-list TIMEOUT extended permit ip host 10.0.1.1 host x.x.x.x
    class-map TIMEOUT
    match access-list TIMEOUT
    policy-map TIMEOUT
    class TIMEOUT
      set connection timeout idle 3:00:00
    service-policy TIMEOUT interface LAN
Output of "show conn long" with 2 connections through the ASA. Other going with default "timeout" values and other matching the configured "timeout" values.
    TCP WAN:x.x.x.x/80 (x.x.x.x/80) LAN:10.0.1.1/59074 (y.y.y.y/59074), flags UO, idle 15s, uptime 17s, timeout 3h0m, bytes 2
    TCP WAN:a.a.a.a/80 (a.a.a.a/80) LAN:10.0.0.21/57482 (y.y.y.y/57482), flags UIO, idle 13s, uptime 14s, timeout 1h0m, bytes 598
    Where
x.x.x.x = Is the destination IP for the connection for which you want to configure its own "timeout" values
y.y.y.y = Is my ASA public IP
a.a.a.a = Is the connection destination IP address for which the global "timeout" values are applied
Theres is also an option called "dcd" in the same "set connection timeout" configuration
Here is the Command Reference section for "set connection timeout"
set connection timeout To specify connection timeouts within a policy map for a traffic class, use the set connection timeout command in class configuration mode. To remove the timeout, use the no form of this command. set connection timeout {[embryonic hh:mm:ss] [idle hh:mm:ss [reset]] [half-closed hh:mm:ss]  [dcd [retry_interval [max_retries]]]} no set connection timeout {[embryonic hh:mm:ss] [idle hh:mm:ss [reset]] [half-closed hh:mm:ss]  [dcd [retry_interval [max_retries]]]} Syntax Description
    dcd
Enables dead connection detection (DCD). DCD detects a dead connection  and allows it to expire, without expiring connections that can still  handle traffic. You configure DCD when you want idle, but valid  connections to persist. After a TCP connection times out, the ASA sends  DCD probes to the end hosts to determine the validity of the connection.  If one of the end hosts fails to respond after the maximum retries are  exhausted, the ASA frees the connection. If both end hosts respond that  the connection is valid, the ASA updates the activity timeout to the  current time and reschedules the idle timeout accordingly.
    embryonic hh:mm:ss
Sets the timeout period until a TCP embryonic (half-open) connection is  closed, between 0:0:5 and 1193:0:0. You can also set the value to 0,  which means the connection never times out. A TCP connection for which a  three-way handshake is not complete is an embryonic connection.
    half-closed hh:mm:ss
Sets the idle timeout period until a half-closed connection is closed,  between 0:5:0 and 1193:0:0. You can also set the value to 0, which means  the connection never times out. Half-closed connections are not  affected by DCD. Also, the ASA does not send a reset when taking down  half-closed connections.
    idle hh:mm:ss
Sets the idle timeout period after which an established connection of  any protocol closes. The valid range is from 0:0:1 to 1193:0:0.
    max_retries
Sets the number of consecutive failed retries for DCD before declaring  the connection as dead. The minimum value is 1 and the maximum value is  255.
    reset
For TCP traffic only, sends a TCP RST packet to both end systems after idle connections are removed.
    retry_interval
Time duration in hh:mm:ss format to wait after each unresponsive DCD probe before sending another probe, between 0:0:1 and 24:0:0.
Defaults The default embryonic timeout is 30 seconds. The default half-closed idle timeout is 10 minutes. The default dcd max_retries value is 5. The default dcd retry_interval value is 15 seconds. The default tcp idle timeout is 1 hour. The default udp idle timeout is 2 minutes. The default icmp idle timeout is 2 seconds. The default esp and ha idle timeout is 30 seconds. For all other protocols, the default idle timeout is 2 minutes. To never time out, enter 0:0:0.

I can't really say anything else to this other than it seems stupid to me to not have a mechanism to keep the Control connection active with frequent (enough) messages that will keep it active as long as there is data transfer on the actual Data connection. I dont know what kind of keepalive it is that polls at minimum on 2hour interval. Kind of beats the whole purpose of keepalive.
Though then again this is not a subject I could comment on any kind of certainty. Only comment on the way it seems to me.

  • DVR Technical Issues

I've found two technical issues with the HD-DVR.
    1)  If you click "INFO" while watching an On Demand selection, it will give you an info bar.  Pressing info again (as you do when watching TV), will cause the DVR to Reboot and your On Demand selection will not appear in the "Recently Viewed", leaving you no choice but to re=order and fast forward to find your place.
    2)  If you are recording a selection and also viewing that selection on the recorder and then a second selection starts recording, the current program will skip to "live" and you will be unable to view the material you previously recorded.
On a personal note, has anyone found a less helpful technical support system than that employed by Verizon?  The auto response is useless and the time required to speak to a representative is unbelievable!
    Old Bill

This is not just a Verizon issue. All providers of the DVR and external drive combination have had to encode them to work together as a pair because of the copyright laws. Those laws were written before the evolution of cloud storage, and I suspect that the laws will be amended to allow providers to wed the equipment to a person's account rather than a piece of equipment. When I was with DISH, they had the same limitation, and you had to pay $40 for the privilege of marrying the hard drive to the DVR ( I guess that was for the marriage license).  Providers will develope this capability at different paces, some quicker than others.

  • Question - is JavaMail the choice for me? Mass email delivery.

Hello. I'm thinking about using JavaMail API, and I would like your feedback if JavaMail is the right choice for me.
I'm working on a J2EE app (running on Glassfish) that will send email out to multiple recipients. The critical parts are
    1) It must scale so that it can send up to 10,000 email multiple times a day.
    2) The servlet that sends out the email must have a descent performance (can't hang while sending out 10,000 email forcing the user to wait, but for the servlet to send out 10,000 emails....I expect a little delay)
So I'm using postfix for delivery with support for 10,000 recipients. I am thinking of using JavaMail inside a servlet which retrieves the 10,000 email addresses and creates 100 separate emails with 100 email recipients under BCC for each email.
I am sending out the email in bulks of 100 separate email each with 100 recipients under BCC to address performance.
Does my solution sound logical? Anything else I should be aware of?

I'm not speaking from personal experience since I haven't tried to build something
of the scale you're talking about, but...
I wouldn't expect the overhead of the JavaMail API to be a significant issue here.
Of course, you have to use the JavaMail API in a reasonable manner to get good
    performance and scalability.
A lot depends on the performance of your server as well.
I would expect the most difficult part to be handling the inevitable failures (network, server, etc.)
that will occur when working at this scale.
100 connections to your mail server several times a day shouldn't be an issue, but your
mail server will be busy sending out all those messages.

I keep getting the error 306 cannot connect to the iTunes Network when downloading songs on iTunes. I've tried all the troubleshooting steps from the forums and my technical issues are still unresolved. I have Windows 7. Please help!!

iTunes Store loads partially or returns "Error 306" or "Error 10054"
Proxies, parental control settings and software, security or filtering software, or a bad iTunes Store cache can cause this.
To address proxies, Remove Internet Options proxy settings  ( http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1490 ) and connect to the Internet without a proxy.
    To reset iTunes Store cache:
In iTunes, choose iTunes > Preferences (Mac) or Edit > Preferences (PC).
    Click the Advanced tab.
    Click the "Reset cache" button.
Click OK and see if the issue is resolved.
    Adjust Parental Controls in iTunes:
    Open iTunes.
    Access iTunes preferences:
On a Mac: From the iTunes menu, choose Preferences.
On a Windows PC: From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
    Click the Parental Controls tab.
    Remove restrictions on Parental Controls.
For more information on parental controls or content filtering software, see iTunes 10.5 for Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store.

  • Is unlocked iphone 3gs a good choice for use in the UK with PAYG?

I've never had a smartphone. I'm thinking of buying the unlocked iphone 3gs to use when I'm in the UK 2-3 (months a year). I would be using a pay as you go sim with a little data use included. All I need is the ability to call, text, email, blog, and check facebook. Would this phone be a good choice for me. I'm hearing that there are some problems with battery life on the iphone 4. Does the 3gs have those issues? Also what does the 's' stand for?
    Any helpful info apppreciated.
    Robertson

This is the deal I'm looking at. As you can see it comes with the upated OS. $375. Is already a bit more than I would normally spend on a phone.

    Hi Marcelo,
Your particular configuration is not supported by our product out of the box - we require a unicode system.
What you can do is try out the installation using a transport that holds our RFCs, or alternatively, use an older install such as STVN 1.1 Orgchart, which does not require Ehp 4 specific items or Nakisa's ABAP add-On.
    What applications are you installing?
    Thanks

  • Which of these 2 laptops would be my best choice for editing video?

I am going to get a new laptop mainly to use for LR and PS but I also want to be able to edit video.  Which of these 2 laptops is my best option...
    ASUS ROG G751JT-CH71
    Intel Core i7-4710HQ 2.5 GHz
    16 GB DDR3
1000 GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive
    17.3-Inch Screen, Nvidia GTX970M 3GB GDDR5
    Windows 8.1
    Or
Acer Aspire V17 Nitro Black Edition VN7-791G-730V
Intel Core i7-4720HQ Processor (2.6 GHz)
    16 GB DDR3 RAM
1 TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive, 256 GB Solid-State Drive
17.3-Inch Screen, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M
    Windows 8.1, 4-hour battery life
Additionally, if you feel there is a better choice for $1500 or less, I would love to hear that advice as well.  I would really appreciate your help in making this decision.  Thanks!

Of the 2 the Asus everyday. You won't notice the difference in the CPU's but you will more so with the GPU's as the 970 is a decent step up from the 860m. Add in extra SSD/HDD and RAM (I believe it goes up to 32GB but check), and see if they have allocated the 16GB as 2x8GB sticks or 4x4GB sticks.
Other option I would suggest looking at a custom PC builder such as Cyberpower, Xotic or other (no affiliations, heck I don't even live in the same country). You will be able to get a much more tailored system with a better upgrade path within your budget. You will get better CPU, better GPU, RAM options up to 32GB and more flexible drive and msata combinations and most importantly some flexibility with the way the system is configured. Some are re-brands of popular gaming laptops, some are from the more custom line of chassis and some are just tweaked versions of your off the shelf names. Plus you don't have to crack the thing open to replace drives etc. that you are paying for but won't use due to slow speeds and the warranty implications that can come from doing this
Not saying buy this as you need to shop around and find what suits you best but as an example this is from Xotic.

The usual choices for the Workspace Layout are missing. How can I restore them? The usual choices for the Workspace Layout are missing. How can I restore them?

The Insert panel has been reworked pretty significantly in DWCC (Spry has been dead for over a year now, so it no longer appears for instance), but can still be opened via Window > Insert then dragged to the toolbar location (to get the tabs back) by clicking and dragging the Insert tab up to the top of the application frame until it highlights. Once you drop it, it will then appear as a toolbar.
Not all of the tools will be visible at all times. DWCC knows when certain things can't technically be used and it won't display them if they can't be inserted.
EDIT: Oops, forgot to add this. Here is a link talking about what has changed in the Insert panel: http://helpx.adobe.com/dreamweaver/using/changes-insert-options-creative-cloud.html

Welcome to the new "X1 Technical Issues" thread. We ask that you post all of your X1 related technical issues (Audio, Set Top Box, etc.) here.

Thank you in advance for posting!

Like many new X1 customers, you are having signal problems. What worked for the older legacy boxes doesn't always work with X1. X1 needs clean and stable signal both incoming and outgoing.
Call in to Comcast and get a service visit set up to have your signals looked at...
