Buddy online, but no video

When one of my buddies comes online they sometime appear on buddy list online, but without video. However, if I start a text chat with them they then can be seen with video, and then I can have a video chat. This happens with different buddies. Does anyone else have this problem? or better yet, does anyone have the solution.

It could be that they have not got System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming set to 1.5Mbps and not have enough Bandwidth available as a consequence.
It could also be that they have Show Video Status or the Camera turned Off in the Video > Camera Enabled option.

For the last 2-3 weeks I have not been able to see my buddy online, but he sees me online. He can call me, but I can't call him because it says he is offline. I have checked all the preferences and I don't have him blocked anywhere. Any suggestions as to how I can fix this? We've been using ichat for a year and this just suddenly happened one day. Thanks.

This is more common with AIM type names (@mac.com, @me.com and AIM names) than with Jabber ones.
Apple is not the only company to have an Agreement with AIM about having email type names recognised as valid AIM Screen Names (in most cases they are ISPs and real emails and it is only the @mac.com and AIM names that might not be email addresses)
This may mean that the AIM servers cannot check a Buddy List properly as to who is On line.
It may also be a sync issue across several AIM servers (Not everyone is logged in to the same server)
If it is an "AIM" Buddy List then go to the Home Folder/Library/Preferences and delete com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist and restart iChat

If a buddy's screename is faded (in the offline section), but a video icon is still next to the screename, and if you right click on the name "video chat" is an option, what does this mean? it is the only one on my whole list that has this.

It could be some sort of "flagging" issue where either the AIM Servers have gone out of sync and you are getting two lots of info (There are about three or four servers involved with getting data to your Buddy list)
I can also see the possibility where you have a Contact in your Address Book who has two Screen Names.
You have one in one group and in another they appear to be Off Line. However iChat will still Link them and Show their Capabilities when you Right Click.
One way of checking this is to double click them to open a Text Chat Window.
At the top is the Recipients Bar (See View Menu when Text Chat is Open).
This gives you the option to chose a different Buddy Name if the contact has two (It offers To and From options if you both have Multiple Accounts).

They have an @Mac.com name and Jabber ID (As it is an Old Chat the Jabber one is Off Line and their @mac.com name is currently "Away"
You can see I have a Google and three AIM Logins I could use to Speak to them.

It is also saying when I try to play videos from my computer that there is a I/O error. When I try to play movies from the hard drive it is saying 'This file is not a movie file."

I try to log onto my @mac.com account, as well as my AIM accounts, but it does not let me talk to anyone. It says i'm online, but i know that on other's buddy lists i am not. This is so frustrating because it happens all the time. The only way i have fixed it in the past is by making a new account, which i don't really want to do like every week. Can someone please help?

From the way you describe things I think at the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts you are listing some AIM names with Running Men next to them and a Apple @mac.com one with a blue globe.
There has been at least one other thread where the poster said he could not get his @mac.com name On-line.
Until yesterday I had not had a problem but I can not get a response from my @Mac Name then.
It has come back today

I am using the version 4.0.9 iChat. I added a new buddy and he is online but on my list is says offline? I tried changing the privacy level, but still doesn't work. What can I do?

Get him to check if he is set to Invisible or has not got you in his Buddy list (and is using "Buddy List Only") or has Allow Specific People and has not added you to that list.

I keep seeing people ask and the advice to replace if it has been unplugged, but really have nothing to confirm that from my experiences.
My experience is that a weak or dead battery can cause much more than date and time issues.
I have seen it time and time again.
Deal with used machines and you will quickly learn....
I'll give no "recipe" or set list of symptoms, but the range of irregularities that can occur make it a quick and easy first line of troubleshooting, especially when the machine has been off the mains for a few months.
Why fight mysterious maladies and troubleshoot with the knowledge that the PRAM battery is beyond it's useful life.

Not likely. They are chemically nasty, disposable, one way discharge batteries.

MBP Clamshell Mode - DVI to TV Adapter - Front Row Works - But No Video?

Hi all,
Have picked up an Apple DVI to TV adapter for my MB Pro. Have successfully got it to work in clamshell mode displaying Front Row on the TV without the external Mouse or keyboard.
However, it will not play videos or movies on the TV.
If I keep the lid open, it will play the video/movie on both displays as hoped. However, when I close the lid, all other Front Row stuff works - but no video picture! Is this some sort of overlay issue? How can I fix this? I do NOt want to burn my LCD when using it this way - would be a waste.
Please pass on any thoughts!

I also have this exact same problem. A little annoying since I have just spent $A35 on the mini dvi to dvi adapter and another $A50 on a good quality DVI cable. My LCD tv is set to millions of colors so that is not the issue.

IPad 2, 7.0.6, composite AV cable gets audio to tv (analog) but no video. Options in Video settings do NOT include "TV out". How do I get audio and video to tv?

I originally connected through my Magnavox dvr, then tried connecting directly to tv. Same result - sound but no video. Instructions I have tell me to go to Settings - Videos, where I should find "Widescreen," "TV Signal" and "TV Out" options. Geojarv - I'm having the same problems getting iPad 2 output via HDMI to the TV.
I have an iPad2 using Apple's 30 pin to AV Adapter. I originally thought this was an Apple not supporting Samsung thing so I tried it on the Sony Bravia TV downstairs with the same results.
I've tried plugging in both the Apple 30 pin connector and HDMI cable thinking it might need power but that didn't help.
I get the TV icon in the Video playbar letting me toggle output choices. Sometimes it says Dock Connector or not at all (just showing Airport Extreme Audio or Apple TV). On my iPhone 4 playing Video it will toggle between Dock Connector and iPhone in the output options.
Using a $24 Central Computer iPhone/iPad to HDMI knock off connector I have gotten this to work in the past, but because I ran into issues I went and picked up the official Apple AV Adapter cable. Currently neither solution works so I'm wondering if this is an Apple iOS (6.0.1) issue since I've swapped out the other variables (2 TVs, 2 iOS devices, 2 HDMI cables, 2 HDMI adapters).
I'll keep playing with it, but I'm not currently able to help my kid with his school video project because I can't figure a clean way of screen recording from his iPad into iMovie.
