Buffalo NAS and OS X

I am considering buying a Buffalo NAS for my home network. They have two Linkstation models: Pro and Live. The Buffalo website states that the Pro model requires Windows for setup and offers Windows or Linux client support; while the Live model requires Windows or Mac OS for setup and offers Windows, Mac OS or Linux client support. Is this true? I'm leaning toward the Pro model but am unsure of OS X support.
Has anyone used the Pro model with OS X? Any comments on using either model with OS X?

HI Don,
Since you posted at 9:05am and haven't received any replies, I decided I'd at least jump on the bandwagon. I did a search for "Buffalo NAS" for Mac OS X and came up with the following. It may not have the exact answers, but might provide some insight.

  • Time Capsule and Linksys Buffalo NAS

I am struggling with my new TC and looking for some pointers.
What I want to be able to do is have setup my network they way it used to be before my linksys router crapped out... only now with TC I want the added time machine backup capability.
what I used to have was cable modem>linsys router>linkstation buffalo NAS (ethernet) and (wireless) to airport express (with USB printer and Airtunes speakers)
I have managed to get all set up EXCEPT the linkstation buffalo.. for some reason simply plugging it into the ethernet jacks on the TC doesn't allow it to show up as a shared drive... and unfortunately there is no way to do a USB to USB on this device because both have the same connector end and I can't find anywhere that this cable exists.
    help?
Does TC support an additional NAS device in it's network capabilities? I have 'extended the network' and any other preferences through airport setup utility, but to no avail...

My Xbox 360 can't connect to Time Capsule wirelessly unless I run in 802.11b mode or unless I purchase something like an AirPort Express or similar wireless access point. I use the Linksys as my main router because it has much more configurable options, especially with the DD-WRT firmware, than the Time Capsule does. The Time Capsule is very user friendly but I think it sacrifices a lot of advanced options.

  • Movies not showing in shared library on Buffalo NAS

    Hi
I have installed a Buffalo NAS with DNLA server active.
I can see the shared libary within itunes on my MAC but only music files show in the library, non of the movie files are visible?
Buffalo tech support suggest this is an itunes problem.
anyone got and ideas to resolve this.
    thanks phil

thanks, i've only just installed and copied the files over so this would seem not to apply.
I checked on my son's PC and looked at the shared library from my MAC and I can see all content, i think this is a Buffalo DNLA server issue.

  • Attention Buffalo NAS Users!

Buffalo Tech has uploaded new firmware that addresses the iTunes 10.5 issue of not being able to use Buffalo NAS devices as iTunes servers. I've tested the upgraded firmware (1.56) with a LinkStation LS-CH1.0TL-V2 in the latest version of iTunes to date (10.5.2) and it works again like it did with iTunes 10.4.
    Get the updated firmware here:

Good to hear, I'm just curious how long it takes for this firmware to install, its been going for an hour now and says please dont close or refresh this window. Under progress it just states update has started. lol, would hate to lose 1tb of media files over a firmware update

  • Buffalo Nas Navigator2 doesn't work with Mavericks

    Hello,
    On my Mac Pro (5.1) Buffalo Nas Navigator2 (v2.69 & v1.71) doesn't work with Mavericks :-(
The window opens and closes immediately (approximately 2s).
According the Buffalo support, all the versions works with Mac OS (including Mavericks ?)
    Thank you for your help.
    Regards
    Olivier
PS: the firewall is not enabled

    Hello Mark,
    Thank you for your message.
For your information, I have no problem with the Finder (I don't use cifs), I can see my LinkStation. The problem is only with Nas Navigator.
Yesterday I tried to use LinkNavigator: Link Navigator installs Nas Navigator and tried to connect to the Link Station, and I could see a message like "no Link Station found on the network" while I have 4 Link Station :-(
I believe that Finder and Nas Navigator do not use the same protocol.
It's curious that the support of Buffalo are not aware about the problem between Nas Navigator and Maverick.
    Olivier
PS: I also use fixed IP ;-)

  • Can not create a playlist from Buffalo NAS drive

    Hi,
I have a Buffalo NAS drive which stores my iTunes Library. When I try to create a playlist and highlight the songs I want, I cant seem to drag them across to the playlist. I'm assuming that is because they are on my NAS drive and not local. Is there anyway around this?
    ITunes 8.0.1 (11)
    Buffalo NAS Linkstation 320GB

If the tracks aren't represented in the local iTunes library but only appear as a shared library, you cannot add them to a new playlist. You'd have to mount the Buffalo as an external drive and add the tracks to the local iTunes library: turn off the option to "copy files to Tunes Music folder when adding to library" in the Advanced preferences) and then use the "add to library" command under the File menu. The NAS will have to remain mounted whenever you want to use iTunes in this scenario.
Otherwise, you'll have to consult the Buffalo's documentation to determine if it's possible to set up playlists on the Buffalo and if so what procedure to follow.

  • NAS and Time Machine

I am looking at getting some type of NAS. What NAS would i need so that time machines would be able to backup to it? I would be backing up a number of different computers both PC's/Servers and Mac's to it (from what i remember, once time machine uses it, you can't use it for anything else?). The mac's are running snow leopard if that matters.

Not really. It depends on what filesystems the NAS operating system supports as well as what transfer protocols are supported. Those products that specifically say they support AFP - Apple File Protocol - will work correctly with a Mac and many also will work with Time Machine. But if the product doesn't support AFP, then you will run into major issues due to differences in filesystems, and Time Machine will not recognize the NAS.
As for supporting multiple OSes you need to examine the specs for the device. It also may help to try downloading the user manual if the manufacturer puts it online.
There are a number of suitable products. Drobo, Synology, Buffalo, Apple, and others that support AFP and work with the Mac and TM. You might do some searching for product reviews at MacWorld.com, XLR8YourMac.com, BareFeats.com, TomsHardWareReview.com, and StorageReview.com as well as other sites you can find Googling.

  • My folders are locked on a shared Buffalo NAS Drive. How do I unlock them?

I have an Imac 27" running snow leopard and Im connected to a shared Buffalo NAS drive. Some of the folders are locked. I ran a test on an empty folder and selected get info, and changed the priviledge to "Read & Write" from "Read Only" and the folder locked. how do I get the folder to unlock? • Macbook, NAS, and iTunes

I have my music library stored on a Buffalo TeraStation and have set my destination folder to the appropriate folder on the drive (\\terastation\share\iTunes\iTunes Music|\). However, when the computer leaves the network, I am disconnected from the drive. If I open iTunes without reconnecting to the drive, iTunes defaults to my computer's HDD without letting me know and will rip music to my HDD, download it, etc. Is there a way to set up iTunes so it will ONLY connect to the network storage drive? Or at least for it to inform me that it is changing the settings that I have put into it? Or even better, just have my Macbook automatically reconnect to the drive when it reenters the network?
    Thanks,
    Bryan

What I found works the easiest for me was to move the entire itunes folder to the nas, including the database files, as well as the music folder. This way if the drive is unaccessible when I open itunes, itunes pops up a message saying the itunes music folder is not available, and I know to mount the drive. It also allows me to make changes to the itunes database/playlists etc. from different computers, and have all the changes reflected no matter what computer I am using. The downside is that you can only access the library from one computer at a time. You need to close itunes on one computer before you can use the same library on a different computer. To do I consolidated my itunes library to the default itunes location on my computer, so that the itunes database files, and music folder where all in the same itunes folder. I then moved the entire itunes folder over to my nas. Finally start itunes holding down the option key and when prompted to select a library, select the itunes folder on the nas. Also make sure copy to library is turned on, and that itunes is still pointing at the correct music folder on the nas when you are finished.

  • Media, NAS and streamers

Can my Time Capsule act as a bridge to my NAS and media streamers, all without being part of my house's general network? I don't have the option of plugging anything into the house router nor do I want to due to heavy traffic when everyone in the house all gets on the internet. Also I don't really want any of my Macs to be involved in this task (except for the initial setip part) as I'm also trying to reclaim some HD space.

Ok.. trick here is to set things manually.
The TC can work isolated from the main network. But you mess things up running dhcp.. at least on things that you want to run internet on.
Keep a separate subnet for the TC from the main router.. I will assume main router is 192.168.x.x
TC is 10.0.1.x by default.. so that works.
Plug into the TC by ethernet from imac.. set the IP of the imac ethernet to 10.0.1.2 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 no gateway (router) no dns. Do the same on the MBP, increment the IP one.. do the same on WDTV increment one.. etc.
Wireless on the TC is not needed so turn it off. That will prevent other people getting in.
You can add anything later.. I would not recommend the buffalo. They are problematic really.. and firmware rather out of date. You are still better saving up and getting low end synology.. or using the TC disk for storing your media as long as you back it up somewhere. You can just use a USB drive on the wd live. And it will make it available to the network so the PCH might be able to access it as well.

  • Itunes on NAS and accessed on 2 laptops

    Hi All
This is my first post...so please excuse any mistakes
    I have a NAS ... (Dlink DNS 320 Sharecenter)
I have copied some of my CD's to this NAS, and renamed all the files and all is well
There is 2 people (myself and my wife) who have 2 different Ipods.
Both of us are using Windows 7 laptops...
Each of us has our own Apple account, and as such, have the different Itunes and music tastes/playlists
Please help me...as I want to know....
The best way to configure Itunes on both laptops (hers and mine) that will allow us to have access to the NAS music, and also be able to add our own purchases to our own laptops only. (I really don't want alot of her music...and she not mine)
I do want the NAS folder to be self updating into Itunes (on both laptops)... as I am still copying the last 20 odd CD's into the NAS and then want the ability to automatically have the added NAS music/folders update in Itunes
I know that this music will not be available on the laptops when travelling...but this is not an issue, as we both have our own ipods.
This would simply be to manage playlists...add new music....delete old songs from the ipods...etc etc
    Anyone help please?

Surely someone knows how to do this?

  • How to prevent iTunes for Windows from "Updating iTunes Library"? (Library is on a NAS and managed by iTunes for Mac. Now getting update wars between Mac and Windows versions of the player.

How to prevent iTunes for Windows from "Updating iTunes Library"?
My library is on a NAS and managed by iTunes on a Mac. I can connect from wife's Windows laptop using iTunes for Windows but every time I do, it Updates iTunes Library. Next time I log in from my Mac it Updates iTunes Library in return. It appears I'm experiencing "Update Wars" between the Mac and Windows versions of iTunes. I would like to allow my wife to stream iTunes songs to her new laptop but I don't want any updates from this source... prefer to manage the library from my Mac and not allow Windows to do any thing other than listen to existing playlists.
    Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Connect the PC to the library on the NAS. Wait while "updated".
Under Edit > Preferences > Advanced make sure the media folder is correctly pointed at the media folder on the NAS. If not correct, close iTunes, wait a few moments, then open iTunes again.
Close iTunes on the PC. Do not open iTunes on the Mac.
Copy the library files, iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, sentinel and the folder Album Artwork into an empty iTunes folder on the PC, for example C:\iTunes.
Click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and hold down SHIFT. Keep holding until prompted to choose or create a library. Click choose and browse to the copied .itl file, e.g. C:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl
The library should now work properly on the PC, however check the setting for the media folder. If needs be correct, close iTunes and reopen.
Open iTunes on the Mac. It will update again, but that should be last time.

    HI
Read this user tip Make and keep a backup of your iTunes library, and only stream from the cloud.
Problems? No hidden catches. Whilst streaming using match, you will need a wifi connection. You main worry is that if your NAS drives fails, you need to redownload your music from match but this could take time depending on how large your collection is. Personally I keep an additional backup of all my music as a matter of course.
