Buffalo TeraStation

I am having two problems. I have a Buffalo TeraStation connected to my router.
1. My iMac connects to it successfully using Connect to Server via the Go dropdown; however, periodically the TeraStation disconnects. Is there a way to get the iMac to automatically reconnect?
2. I have a large number of mp3 files on the TeraStation. The iMac can only seem to "see" some of the files (a Win PC can see them all). Is there any reason that some of the file would be invisible to the Mac?
Thanks.

I'm using one more as an online backup device rather than an active disk. I do use it this way because: 1) That was my intention for it, and 2) In the RAID configuration I set it up for it is not the quickest device - for "fast" I use a firewire drive.
But, it does work.

  • Since upgrading to Lion I cannot connect to my Buffalo Terastation

Since upgrading to Lion I cannot connect to my Buffalo Terastation and get the following message. "The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. Please contact your system administrator to resolve the problem".  I have updated the firmware on the Terastation but still can’t connect to it. I have also posted this message on the Buffalo forum. Any suggestions?

Lion changed the rules for NAS communication.  See this Web page.  As that page dates from last July, I'd hope that NAS vendors would have fixed things by now.  I'd ask Buffalo directly whether that product supports the protocol(s) described in that article.

  • Anybody using the Buffalo Terastation (or similar)?

Is anybody using the Buffalo Terastation as a NAS or Backup drive?
I'm looking into getting some external RAID storage for backups and such, and the Terastation looks really good and you can't beat the price.
The biggest problem I see is that apparently the Terastatio is only accessible as a windows share or an ftp server which wouldn't work for backups.
If I wanted to use Retrospect to do my backups I could only create backup jobs up to 2Gb only. If I wanted to use another backup software (SilverKeep, for example) all ownership and security permissions would get lost.
So, is anybody using the Terastation successfully, or is there an alternative out there with similar characteristics and price?
    Thanks for your help,
    Julian

I've been in no hurry because I had already invested in a number of externals for alternating cloning, but I've been seriously considering this alternate approach for the next hardware go-around.
I'd be very interested in whatever you end up doing and how it works out. If this thread is too old by then, see the article in my sig for a contact.

  • 10.5.7 and Buffalo Terastation NAS

So... did update 3 macs from 10.5.6 to 10.5.7.
After that, every one of them can make a new folder on Nas Share but none of them has rights to read nor write if the folder is made by another.
Example: MacPro logs into share and makes a new folder named huh.
iMac logs into share and tries to save a file into huh.
    ....no can do...
    no permissions.
    Before 10.5.7 everything did work.
Tried to make a archive and install installation to get back to 10.5.6 situation, but it didn't help.
Is the only solution to make a clean installation back to 10.5.6?
...this is too windows, just too windows...

What does the x1600 & x1900 mean? It can’t be the resolution because it must be taller than it is wide.

This refers to a Mac Pro with a Radeon 4870 card. You haven’t included in your profile what computer you are using, but that may be why neither baltwo or I can not replicate it. I have the same iMac baltwo has.
Other than that, I got nothing

  • Synching photos from TeraStation to Apple TV is not working - any ideas?

    Hi,
gosh, I hope someone can help me with this ... please
my iTunes library runs on a Buffalo TeraStation Live (network attached storage).
Synching and streaming movies, TV shows and music works fine. But as soon as I choose the photo folder on the TeraStation and click on apply iTunes starts 'synching' forever without copying any pictures. I have tried streaming the pictures, too (not working either).
Synching from a local harddrive photo folder works fine for some reason.
Does anyone know how to fix this? Thank you!!

hmmm - well i sometimes find that the terrastation goes into a sulk and needs a reboot in these circumstances. the trouble is that the terrastation uses windows style filing system and all manner of issues crops up, causes it to crash and / or goes into a never ending loop. If you sync your photos onto the atv then it will be fine - unless you have 1000s of photos, it will not take up too much space
I am seriously thinking of cutting my losses, getting rid of it and going timecapsule.

  • How easy is the buffalo linkstation to use with my mac?

i'm thinking of buying a buffalo terastation to add more capacity to my system. i would connect it to my router and then the mac would probably access it wirelessly, although i could wire it together. how easy is it to access something like a buffalo terastation from my mac? does anyone know how i do it? will i be able to access movie files and itunes libraries from there if i put them on the terastation. is it quick or will i find it really slow? do i access the files from a finder window just like i would with files on my mac harddrive?
i'm fairly new to macs and although i understand how network attached storage works in principle i've never tried it.
    thanks.

It should be a pretty straightforward hookup. It looks like it would connect through an SMB share, much like how you would connect to a PC on the same network. It is what I use to connect to my PC from my iMac through my Netgear router.
I have heard mixed things about NAS units. They are very expensive per gigabyte and often do not perform very well speed-wise. If you are looking to use this to store video, I think you will be dissappointed.
I have wanted to do something like this myself. I have looked into these as well as single NAS drives and even using a NAS device that allows several plain USB drives to be used as NAS. All of these options have tradeoffs and none are ideal.
One thing you want to look out for is that not all network drives are NAS. Some use proprietary drive formats that will not work with your Mac, like the Netgear SC101. Make sure that you get one that supports an open drive format - a Linux file system.
So far, the most promising possibility (for me) seems to be building a cheap PC, get some ATA drives on sale and throw Linux on it to use it as a server. The cost would be less, but support would be hard to come by
You can get 400GB drives on sale for $160-ish, add a case for $50, a low-end CPU and motherboard for $90-ish, 512MB RAM for $40, a CD drive for $30, and a KB/mouse for $30. If you have any of that stuff around - great.
I am at a point where I have "paralysis by analysis." I do not know what to do since there are so many tradeoffs.
I do have a lot of PC parts lying around, so that might be the way for me to go.
Sorry to prattle on, but I wanted to share some options.

  • TimeMachine and Terastation compatibility

has anyone had any luck getting the buffalo, Terastation to work with TimeMachine?
I attempt to backup but it always fails. (backup disk image could not be mounted)
I have tried setting the terastation for specific formats (PC,Mac,Ftp) only but no success.

I too have a buffalo NAS drive, no dice I have the same issue as you do. Fails to create the image on the drive. Looks like Apple is basically forcing you to have a physically attached drive via USB, share a Apple network drive or buy Time Capsule. Good for their profits, bad for my wallet after dropping a couple hundred dollars on something I thought was going to work without a problem.

  • Accessing a single itunes library from multiple macs using a NAS???

hi, at the moment i have a imac g5 holding all my itunes library files on its hard drive. i'm about to buy another mac to locate downstairs, and also have itunes on my windows laptop.
i am thinking of moving the itunes library to a networked attached storage device, something like the buffalo terastation. does anyone have experience of this? does it work well over a wireless network? (802.11g)
how easy is this to set up, and make each mac point to the library on the NAS device? are there any problems with ripping cds to the NAS device, or multiple macs accessing different songs at the same time?
what would i need to do on each mac to make if see the library if i moved it to the NAS?
sorry for the questions, but i know what i want to do, just not quite sure how to do it!
    thanks, andy

    hi,
sorry i haven't tried this. i've now resorted to
buying a mac mini, attaching an external firewire
harddrive and using itunes sharing. still means i
have to have the mac mini on all the time, so not
ideal. i decided not to buy the nas for the time
being. i'm still interested in hearing if it works on
    other peoples systems tho!
There are others who have done something similar in that they created a shared folder on one computer and opened access to that shared folder to all other computers. The result was that only one computer could listen to the library at a time. I would assume the same thing would be true if using a NAS due to the file locking iTunes imposes. Anybody want to take a ride to the Apple Store and see if one of their reps have done it??

  • ITunes no longer "found" after sync

I was disappointed to find that after syncing about 400 of my favorite songs to my iPhone with iTunes 7.3 (OS X), those tracks had the dreaded "grey arrow" beside them, indicating they could not be found.
Of course, clicking the song made iTunes try and look in the last known location and sure enough, the songs opened up.
This happened for newly purchased AAC and Enhanced AAC tracks from iTunes as well as ones I ripped from CD and even MP3s.
Interesting note about the MP3 files - they were somehow reset to open with text edit (the notepad equivalent on a Mac) and i had to reset them to open with iTunes.
    Any one else experience this?

A mystery that was related to having the files on a Buffalo Terastation NAS. When I changed the mappings of the SMB share, it worked.

  • OSX Server and Mac Mini and Simple Network functionality

Hi not sure if this is the best place for this question but here goes.
I am relatively new to Mac after a life lost to the PC/Microsoft world. Anyway I have a small home network and store all my documents on a network attached hard drive (Buffalo Terastation).
I travel a lot and want external access to my files and email via the internet. I was going to set up a PC Server with MS Small office and Exchange to facilitate this but then started to think that an Apple solution would be better. I don't want to spend a fortune as it is basically just me, and maybe another user or two, that would use the server.
I started to think that Mac OSX Server running on a 2GHz Mac Mini with 120/160gb drive and 2 gig Ram. If the mini would run OK then this would be ideal due to low noise, footprint, consumption, etc and pretty cheap as well.
I run a iMAC 24 and 2 macbook laptops all running Leopard.
Would this be a practical and workable solution to my needs ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Simon

Would the "Back to my Mac" service with .Mac not work for you? You wouldn't necessarily need a server then...
File sharing on the workstation is good as Dave says so you don't need to go whole hog for the Server platform.
But if you wanted to go for Leopard Server, you'd be able to do a **** sight more than you could with Exchange - I wrestle with it every day at work but am happy to come back home to a Mac world!

  • Advice on best arrangement for home network

This is my first post so go easy on me....please?!
I have moved into a new apartment and am trying to set my network is the best way, but am struggling slightly.
    I have a WRT150N and WRVS4400N (Don't ask why I have both) both of which are brand new, 3 wireless-G enabled laptops an wireless Xbox 360 and soon a LinkTheater or Helios media player, and this is my problem;
My apartment is over 2200 sqft and long with two rooms at one end and the lounge and main bedroom at the other.  One room acts as my home office and this is where I want all of my network mess and cables to be hidden, but my wireless doesn't seem to like that.
If I have either router in the office I have no little or no signal in the lounge and no signal in the master bedroom, however if I put the router in the lounge then I have a good signal everywhere, including the office.  So it seems that the office room is the issue simply for broadcasting.  I have tried all of the normal checklists for improving router signals, but nothing has worked well from the office.
Well you'd think I'd have my solution then....not exactly!
I also have a Buffalo Terastation Live NAS which is part of my network and acts as my print server and main network storage for music etc.  and as I really don't want it and the laser printer in the lounge having the main wireless router in the lounge is not the solution.
The apartment building is rigged with fibre optics so I have two internet access points, and I can connect the routers to these and have the same IP address SSID, pass keys etc, and tehrefore when one signal drops out teh other is picked up, but that only gives me internet and doesn't give me access to the NAS and printer which is what I ultimately want.
On version 1.0 of the WRT150N I see 3rd-party firmware can be used to provide a wireless bridge mode amongst other things, but I don't see any other options out there.
    Any suggestions?
Am I overlooking something or do I need to simply decide on an expander or one of the WAP products to add in?
I don't want to swap to Wireless-N as that means I'd need something for all of the laptops.
The internet access points in the house don't seem to be linked to one another directly, but getting a straight answer out of someone here is more trouble than it's worth, so is it something I can check easily, and if so could I link through these do you think? (I don't think so, but I am new to network stuff).
Sorry for the long story....hope someone managed to read it all the way to here!
Message Edited by Gambba on 03-26-2008 04:37 PM

The WRT150N has no brdging capability and if your planning to use a 3rd party firmware it will void the warranty of the router. I believe your your only option here is to place the WRVS4400N in the lounge since other location is a dead spot.

  • Time Machine Backup to NAS

I am desperately trying to figure out how to back up my MacBook Pro to a NAS. I am having trouble figuring this out. Here is what I have done so far:
    1. I have enabled Time Machine to work with NAS by using the following command: “defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1”
    2. I rebooted the machine to make sure that the above was implemented
    3. I determined my Computer Name and MAC Address of local computer by using the following command: “ifconfig en0 | grep ether | sed s/://g | sed s/ether//”
    4. I tried to make a new “sparsebundle” on the local disk by using the following command: “sudo hdiutil create -size 500g -type SPARSEBUNDLE -nospotlight -volname "Time_Machine" -fs "Case-sensitive Journaled HFS+" -verbose ./[NAME][MACID]” --> Where [NAME] is the computer name and [MAC_ID] is my MAC address.
But … this process asked for a password. I tried every password I have and none worked. In short, there was no password.
    5. I then looked up this error and learned that this is a problem with my “sudoers” file. Following the directions, I then changed the permissions to allow me to edit this file (I have a stand-alone MacBook Pro that is not part of a work network or controlled by an administrator, so I am also the administrator and don’t know why I had to do this in the first place).
This seemed to work and it processed the “sudo” comment, but then it gave me another error that said: “sudo: /etc/sudoers is mode 0666, should be 0440”
    6. Continuing to follow the online help, I then rand the “Disk Utility” to fix the problem. But, this just seems to reset the “sudoers” file and I am back to the same problem identified in point #4 above.
So, now I am stuck and don’t know where to go or what to do. Any help would be appreciated very much.

James: Thank you for the response. I did not realize things had changed.
Regarding the NAS, I do believe that my NAS (Buffalo Terastation) does support Apple Talk Protocol.
But does it support Apple File Protocol (AFP) file sharing, as specified in [Disks that can be used with Time Machine|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html]?
Second, Time Machine sees my NAS, but gives me the following error once is tries to execute Time Machine: "Time Machine could not complete the backup." and "The backup disk image "/volumes/Backup/[NAME].sparsebundle" could not be created (error 45)."
In short, it seems like it should work, but it is not.
    Thoughts?
Some folks seem to have made it work to some Buffalo devices; I don't know one of their models from another, much less how they work. That's the downside of using a 3rd-party NAS with Time Machine; the two (very different) operating systems have to work together seamlessly. And when there's a problem, there aren't many folks familiar with both.
Double-check that the NAS's software and setup instructions are up to date, and that you've followed them to the letter.
Have you tried the Buffalo folks? AppleCare?

  • Backup with Time Machine for 6 iMacs

I want to to use an external drive to backup with Time Machine my 6 iMac's. I know that Time Capsule is good for this kind of stuff but I would prefer to be able to plug my Storage Device with an Ethernet cable. And Time Capsule is offering 2 or 3 TB, I would need minimum 5 TB. Any idea what should I buy and what is good for that purpose?
    Thanks a lot

Time Capsule has 3 Eth ports so only 3 iMacs via cable.
You can do it with two 3TB Time Capsules if you wish.
With 6 iMacs you may need to think about small business solution.
On Mac networks we use Gigabit switches and NAS drives such as Buffalo TeraStation III 8TB on RAID5.
Those support Apple Time Machine, have dual Gigabit Eth port which can be trunked with manageable switches and all works very well and fast.
There are many scenarios you may want to consider.
Let me know if you have any questions regarding the above setup.

  • Maximum number of pages and links in an InDesign Document

We have an InDesign document that is 79 pages, and contains about 700 image links and 700 text links. The links in total are about 7GB (most text documents are 2-6K; images could be anywhere from 1 to 50MB). the InDesign document is 220MB.
If we house the package of the InDesign Document and the links on a local machine, it takes our machine about 2 minutes to load the file for editing. If the packaged is housed on a NAS drive (BUFFALO TERASTATION using Gigabit), it takes 16 minutes to load.
I'm wondering if there is a set of "best practices" that suggests a limit to the size of the package, and if you exceed that limit, you should expect poor performance? (Like should we limit our documents to 10 pages and 1GB of links?)
Are we asking for trouble by having documents and links this large? or is there some network or settings or performance issues on our network and on our MACs that I should be looking at first?
Thanks for any comments or assistance.

To answer in a simpler way:
Page number limit per document: 9999 pages
Link limit: your computer configuration (processor, ram, etc) determines it.
Remember, if u run very large documents, you need to upgrade your configuration accordly. If you not have enough available resources to run a job fast, its clear the computer/network needs an upgrade. There are models of HP computers that can reach 128gb of ram memory, and they are not server, they are workstations.
the other way is to avoid extra image data on links (large images in size, far from the output size) and work with the exact size you need, because this extra size can be the cause of the extra processing time.
"We "strive" to do the editing in PS, but often we have a PS file that we want to keep at 4x4 (for future or other purposes), but will place it in InDesign as 2x2 -- so we edit it in InDesign. Should we be creating a new 2x2 file for this one-time purpose?"
Thats the idea, (extra size = extra processing = extra time) X number of you images.

  • Itunes slow switching tracks on mp3 but not on m4a files?

Itunes is slow (1 minute) switching tracks on mp3 files but not on m4a files. I can't figure out why. My music files are on a network (NAS) drive. When I change tracks between m4a files, I get quick changes between songs (couple seconds). When I change songs on mp3 files, I notice the network spikes usually in 3-4 spikes over about a minute, and then the song starts. Itunes is hanging during that time. If I start a file from the local machine desktop, I see the same spikes. The computer was freshly reinstalled this week, so new itunes install. Also tried reinstalling. I have a second computer on the same network that I tried to duplicate the problem, and that computer works fine on mp3 and m4a song changes. Uses same version of Itunes 10.  Both machines are XP service pack three and a good amout of RAM and run fine with all other programs, so no virus, etc.

I am having the exact same problem.  It's maddening.  It's happening to all of my computers (all Windows 7) and my Apple TV (using Library sharing).  My whole iTunes library is stored on a Buffalo terastation NAS drive.  It's been this way for years and I've never had a problem.  Until you mentioned it, I never noticed that is was an MP3 vs AAC thing.
