Buffalo USB Hard Drive won't mount after 10.4.10 upgrade

After updating to OS X 10.4.10, my Buffalo Drivestation wouldn't mount. My MacBook could see that it was connected in System Profiler, but I couldn't access it. I (rather painfully !) backed out the update and reverted back to 10.4.9. Has anyone else had this problem ? Is there a solution that lets you use 10.4.10 ?

I have the exact same problem! I tried accessing it through my Windows, and it worked, but I have to say this is very disappointing and upsetting.

Hard Drive Won't Mount After Repair by Second Computer

I have an G4 Cube with OS 10.2 on the internal hard drive (which is full) and OS 10.4 on an external La CIe hard drive (that I use as my main OS). The external hard drive accumulated serious damage that couldn't be repaired by Disk Utility on the internal drive. My copy of DiskWarrior X would not run under OS 10.2 (10.4 was required) and it wouldn't boot from the CD either So I connected the external hard drive to my second computer, an iMAC running OS 10.5. (Unfortunately, I disconnected the external hard drive when the computer was off instead of ejecting the drive by dragging it to the Wastebasket.) The external drive mounted and DiskWarrior easily constructed a new directory, defragmented the files, and eliminated all of the damage on the external hard drive visible to Disk Utility. However, when I reconnected the repaired external hard drive to the G4 Cube, the drive wouldn't mount. Privileges were repaired on both computers with the external drive connected without helping. Being repaired while connected to a higher OS or perhaps simply being connected to a higher OS seems to have left the LaCie external hard drive in a state which couldn't be mounted by an earlier OS.
Following this hypothesis, it booted the G4 Cube from the OS 10.4 Installation CD while the LaCie external hard drive was connected. When I cancelled installation of OS 10.4, I was asked to choose a start-up disk AND OS 10.4 WAS NOW MAGICALLY AVAILABLE ON THE EXTERNAL DRIVE. Simply starting up from a more advanced OS allowed the hard drive to mount.
Shockingly, when I restarted from OS 10.2, the external hard drive was still mounted. Whatever was preventing the drive from mounting was a TRANSIENT STATE, not backwards incompatability.
POSSIBLE LESSON: If a hard drive won't mount on computer A after being connected to computer B, consider booting computer A using the OS on the installation disk from computer B.

If you need to repair a hard drive with OS X installed on it, you must use that same version of OS X to perform the repair. Using another--in this case, newer--OS can cause quite a bit of trouble, as the directories/permissions may be dealt with differently between the OS's.

External Firewire hard drive won't mount after 10.4.10 update

I see many posts about USB drives not mounting after 10.4.10 update. Just lending my voice to that issue (my USB drive won't work either) as well as the 10.4.10 update breaking Firewire drives.
Hope a fix is coming. No backups are scaaaary.

How to fix the problem of a missing external Hard Drive (Firewire) after it vanishes from you desktop after installing 10.4.10 update.
I have a iMac PPC (Non intel). Aparently my system upated installed the wrong version of 10.4.10 and thus my external firewire hard drives a 320 GB Westerndigital My Book, and Acomdata 80 GB, and aWestern Digital 160 GB media center all vanished from the desktop.
The instructions below should be credited to several different people. I found various version of these steps in the Discussion. I combines a few of them into this one 10 step fix and it worked for me. I hope it works for you.
1) Shut down you computer
2) Unplug all peripherals (i.e USB and Firewire, I left computer power plug in as well as ethernet and Keyboard+ Mouse) and leave along for 30 Minutes
3) Restart holding down the Command (Apple) + Option + P + R keys for three startup bongs, then release the keys and your computer will start up as usual.
4) Verify and repair disk Permission using Disk Utility. (Several things were repaired here)
5) Instal 10.4.10 Combo PPC
6) Restart Again
7) Again repair Disk permissions (None of mine needed to be repaired fyi this time)
8) Unplug Power cable and Firewire cable from External Hard Drive (leave along for 1 minute)
9) Reconnect power to Firewire External Drive first then the Firewire cable to the drive second, then the firewire cable from the Drive to the computer last.
10) Turn on your Firewire Drive... you will head it spin up and eventually show up on your desktop just like it did before the 10.4.10 update.

External hard drives won't mount after upgrading to Tiger 10.4.9. Help!

Hi, I've just got the latest iMac. Very excited! I did all the software updates, connected my Western Digital extended hard drive so that I could copy some files over onto my new Mac. It was fine at first. Then when I wanted to open up the external hard drive icon on my desktop again and double clicked on it, everything disappeared from the screen for a few seconds, then reappeared but my external hard drive simply opened the window to my personal hard drive on the Mac. The WD links to my computer via Firewire. I then connected my USB external hard drive stick and it was the same story.
I used Disk Utility to test everything and everything was fine.
I then reinstalled Mac OSX 10.4.8 and plugged in my external hard drives. Everything worked perfectly. After copying over documents and a couple of programs, and downloading a few more programs, I ran my software updates again, upgrading the operating system to Tiger 10.4.9. I attached my external hard drive and it was the same problem all over again.
I the read up the online discussions and also chatted to an Apple dealer, and their advice was to download the Intel Combo and reinstall the operating system. I have just done this and my external hard drives will still not mount properly. Their icons appear on screen but double click them and everything disappears.
Please help. This is really frustrating as I have a backlog of work to do and I seem to be wasting hours on this. Not only that, this is a brand new machine which I rightly expect to work straight away.

Hi, try to put your HDD in other Mac and look if appear the same, also you can try to repair permission.

USB hard drive won't mount on startup

I recently (2 days ago) purchased a new 21.5" iMac (mid 2011). Yesterday I installed the update to 10.6.8, and since then have had an unusual problem. I own two external USB drives. One for Time Machine, and another that houses my iTunes library. Both are formated to Mac File System (Journaled). When I originally set up the computer, and completed the transfer of my data and accounts from my old Mac, both of the external drives mounted on the desktop exactly as they should and everything worked without issue. But then I did a Software update, which installed a bunch of updates to iTunes, Java, etc. This update included the update which took the system from 10.6.6 to 10.6.8. Now whenever I reboot the computer, the drive that houses my iTunes library will not mount when my desktop loads. I have to reach around the computer and physically disconnect and reconnect the USB cable before the computer will recognize the volume. Disk Utility won't even see it until I do this. Once I reconnect the cable, the drive works as it should until I reboot again, and I have to disconnect/reconnect the cable again to get it to work.
I don't believe this is a problem with the hard drive itself, because it worked as it should up until the software update, and it continues to work as it should on the old computer that it was hooked up to before I upgraded.
I have searched google, and apple.com for similar situations and I have come up empty. Is there anyone who might have any ideas on how to fix this? it's rather annoying to reconnect the drive each and every time I turn on the computer.

Repair Disk Permissions on the internal HD and also on the EHDs. Then do restart in Safe Mode and then do both SMC and PRAM resets.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

Hard drive won't mount after running disk utility repair

I have an iMac with a 320gb hard drive. It will not mount. The small horible wheel started sining so I retared. It could not find the start-up disk. I restared with the CD, after doing this twice the disk was visible in disk untility. I have ran this 3 times and it says the node is incorrect and it cannot be reapired by Disk Untility. It will not mount.
Is there any other way to save the disk so I can get my files off.

You would need the Firewire cable. If you get one then you can use Target Disk Mode - Transferring files between two computers using FireWire to transfer your files to another drive.

External USB drive won't mount after 10.9.5 upgrade

Is anyone else reporting the following issue? Immediately after installing OS X update 10.9.5 (13F34) on 09/18, my external USB drive (IOMega 1GB OS X Extended FS) used for Time Machine would no longer mount and isn't recognized. When I look at the drives in finder, it is missing. However, it does show up under the USB Hi-Speed Bus device tree:

Is the drive's icon on the desktop (perhaps behind another icon, which is possible if Finder > View > Cleanup is enabled)?
If not, is the box Finder > Preferences > General > External Disks checked?
Is the drive listed in every Finder window's sidebar?
If not, is the box Finder > Preferences > Sidebar > External Disks checked?
Are Time Machine backups to the drive happening on schedule?
If not, does the drive appear in System Preferences > Time Machine > Select Disk?
Can you open /Volumes/Mac-Mini 2/Backups.backupdb using Finder > Go > Go to Folder...?
Does the drive appear in Disk Utility? Is it (or can it be) mounted there?
Have you tried to plug it in to a USB port on the Mini (not a hub) or into a different USB port on the Mini?
Have you tried this: shut down; unplug the drive; boot the Mac; after you have logged in and the Finder is done populating the desktop and menu bar, plug the drive in?

My other hard drives won't mount after installation of 10.4.7

i have 3 hard drives in my G4 Quicksilver. when i installed 10.4 on one of them, the other two hd's appear in disk utility but gave invalid b-tree node errors & won't mount?? disk utility reports
"Invalid B-tree node size
Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit"
all my important info is on these two hard drives so i can't just clear them and start over. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Usually this is indicative of a damaged directory. However, sometimes it is indicative of a dying hard drive,
or damaged peripheral interface.
Since you say all of your critical data is on the drives, I'd purchase Prosoft Data Rescue and another empty Mac formatted drive you can recover the data to and see if that is successful.

I just bought an external USB 2.0 hard drive enclosure for a 30 gig HD I had in my old G3 Powerbook.It mounts fine on the older powerbook G3 with OS X 10.1.2, but not on the G4 titanium 10.3.9 I bought it for. Please help!

There used to be a couple of explanation on some ones' nomepage - the idea is (I think ) that hardware developers think it comes with OS and apple think that it comes with hardware driver.

USB Hard drive won't mount

I have a problem with a hard drive connected in an external USB enclosure to a Mac Mini Core Duo, that occasionally fails to mount automatically when powered up. Apple's System Profiler "sees" the drives (and both formatted partitions on it), but I cannot access the files. Is there any type of utility that will allow me to mount the drive manually?

My Toshiba external hard drive won't mount after OSX Mavericks update. Please help.

Two days ago I updated to Mavericks 10.9.3 and prior to this, my Toshiba 1TB external hard drive worked perfectly well. Since the update, my hard drive will no longer mount. It shows up in Disk Utility but will not let me 'mount', 'verify disk' or 'repair disk' through Disk Utility. My sister has an identical Macbook Pro which she has not updated to Mavericks. I have tested my hard drive on her laptop and it works just fine. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Do I need to reformat my hard drive (and if so, will that clear everything on my hard drive?) or is there a simple fix?

Firewire external hard drives won't mount after using Windows Vista

Hi to All,
I installed Windows Vista Business in a SATA hard drive I added to my Mac Pro. Every time I select the HD from the start up disk in my preferences and restart, the next time I start up with Mac OS 10.6.1 all my firewire devices don't mount. I have to shut down my Mac unplug the power cord for a few minutes to get my firewire devices back. Do you know of any workarounds to this issue? Thanks in advance!

External IOMega Drive won't mount after 10.7.4 upgrade

After upgrading to 10.7,4 I can no longer access my external IOMega Prestige drive. This drive is encrypted/protected via IOMega's Drive Protection software.
The following is in the kernel log after I enter the password for the drive.

Firewire and USB hard drives won't mount on Xserve - 10.5.8

I have a triple interface drive set for rotating backups, and they've stopped mounting on my Xserve. Disk Utility can't see them at all, but System Profiler sees when I plug them in. The drive specifics for the volume are missing, but they ID correctly. Same drives plugged into an iMac and a MacBook Pro mount perfectly every time, both over USB and Firewire. Disk Utility via the iMac shows no problems at all. I've tried rebooting the Xserve... doesn't help.
I kinda need my backup to run on my server. Thoughts on how to resolve?

Internal hard drive won't mount after running Tech Tools Pro 5

HELP.
We have an imac 2ghz Intel Core 2 running OS 10.6.8.
I ran Tech Tools Pro 5 to rebuild directory, optimize files, optimize volume. It ran over nightbut seemed to hang up optimizing the volume.
Now the HD doesn't mount.
I've tried a few fixes. Including running disk utility from a CD. The disk utility says the directory is okay but doesn't see the HD to verify or repair permissions.
I've tried zapping the pram and safe boot, neither of which worked.
I've been able to use the computer by booting from an external start up hd.
Oddly, I ran a Time Machine back up prior to running TTP, but for some reason the only back up I see is from 3 months ago.
Not sure why the recent back up didn't happen, but were missing some very important recent docs.
I downloaded a trial version of Stellar Pheonix Mac Data Recovery and it seems to be able to see all of the data on the main HD.
I'm wondering whether or not to spend $100 for full version to attempt to restore content of HD to an external.
If I do this, I assume I'll have to erase the HD and reinstall data from the Stellar Pheonix collection, hoping that it's all intact.
Does anyone have any other suggestions to get the HD mounted????

No, I don't think you want an erase at all, you want a freah external drive to recover to first off.
